Thank you so much for this fantastic review. Mike and I, the producer Purple, the artists and sound guys did absolutely everything we could to make the game as close as possible to the movies. I lost count of the times we watched the movies over and over researching. We spent weeks with Fox discussing minor visual details. We just wanted every player to feel part of the Alien universe. I am so delighted that comes across in your review. Part of my duties on the game was to create the gameplay code and you hit the nail on the head. I didn't want an FPS game. I wanted survival, horror and stealth. I feel as a team we achieved that in spades. Again, so grateful for this enthusiastic review. In over 30 years in the games industry, this is the game that makes me feel proudest. I think we put together the best dev team in the business for this game.
WOW! Thank you so much for your response! I really appreciate it. Alien vs. Predator is a phenomenal game. I'm still enjoying it. My goodness, I even went so far as to purchase another copy just so I'd have the box, instructions, and overlays. Whenever I play it, I feel as if I'm stepping into that universe. Wasn't exaggerating in my review when I mention being timid with exploration. The first three Alien films definitely had a haunted house vibe where you're almost too frightened to peek your head 'round any corner. Truly thrilling. If I remember correctly, I read in an interview with Retro Gamer magazine you wanted to include some AI where xenomorphs would lure players into traps, dead end halls, or pockets of enemies? Did Fox actually send you prop weapons for modelling? I think I read too that they even sent Hicks' uniform for use in the game? Did you get to work on some of the later titles as well?
Sort of working in reverse on your questions. It was my one and only game with the franchise as I moved to MGM pretty quickly afterwards where I worked on Goldeneye 64 and other titles. I still would love to do another Alien based game. It has become a big part of my life. You are absolutely right about props. We had Sean Patton and Lance Lewis wear the original space marine uniform and we did get some weapon props too. We also managed to get hold of detailed models which were scanned. We even used some official stuff for design of walls etc. Incidentally, did you notice that when you kill a marine his "blood" is white. They were all androids (like Ash and Bishop in the movies).. So you saw the milky fluid the androids spewed in the movies when they die. We called the soldiers milkies! It is how we got away with them looking the same. Sort of the clone wars before Star Wars :)) based on discussion with the original Alien writers about Weyland Yutani using android troops. We went in to so much detail on the research. The AI was interesting to say the least. My friend and the producer of the game Purple Hampton had the genius idea of letting you play all three characters. It tripled my AI coding requirement overnight :) All of the characters use strategies and if you monitor them carefully you will see pack strategy in play. They very much adapt to your playstyle and monitor how you are playing the game. There was quite a lot of emergent AI in there too. At one point, the Predator decided to kill every alien on the level in rapid succession just so he could toy with you as the player. Totally took me by surprise, but he decided it was the way to go! Its quite unnerving to be in a level full of alien corpses and the predator laughing at you. I actually had to tone him down a little. He still toys with you though and is usually much more aware of where you are than you being aware of him! On the honour thing, posters here are quite right, Fox and the guys who designed the Predator were adamant that trophy killing whilst invisible would lose the Predator honour points. That is part of Predator lore. I think it added a fascinating dynamic to the game. So glad you love the game so much. It has made my day!
Holy shit! You worked on GoldenEye too? That's another favorite! Nintendo 64 remains to this day my favorite Nintendo console. Partially because of GoldenEye, though I love most of the Star Wars games, Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, and the two Castlevania adventures. Before responding to your answers, have you ever considered making new titles for the Jaguar? Having that level of access is a fan's dream! I was really blown away by the textures. While the levels are basic in terms of layout, as far as there being no stairs and such, the texture maps gave 'em life. When I read that you went through the trouble of building miniatures to be photographed and scanned, I hadn't really heard of such a technique being done before. Aside from character models in fighting games... As for the Marine's blood, it appears red on my CRT. Even when killing them as the Predator. Was that an idea employed early in the game's development, or is my TV dying? The AI explains a lot. I keep trying to snag the Pulse Rifle on level one. I've done it before, and it's not easy. I know I can use the ducts and grab the one on level three, but I take it as an added challenge to try and steal it on level one. My first attempt went well, though I had taken too much damage and died on a puddle of acid. So I restore the game and try again. Now, most of the xenomorphs are crowded around the elevator, like they're waiting for me... Some crafty bastards! I heard about the Predator's honor points much later, only because I rarely read "extended universe" stuff for it seems a lot of films series ignore it. In the first two flicks, both hunters abuse the cloak. That may be different in Predators, or the new flicker coming out. I haven't seen the former but once, and I haven't gotten out to see the new one yet. I'm glad it's employed in the game for it does add challenge and strategy. Was there any thought to having the alien be able to crawl on walls and ceilings like Alien 3? Alien vs. Predator makes my day whenever I play it. Showed it to my mom, the person responsible for my love of Aliens and horror films in general, and she can't play it. Scares the shit out of her. LOL!
I will have to check my copy now, but at one point the blood was white, so we may have changed it late in the day. I think you are right in that it was the first use of miniatures for a major game release. We did think about crawling aliens. I won't BS with some fancy answer, the truth of it is simply we ran out of time for more features due to ensuring we made a Christmas release, so we had to prioritise our wishlist and what was compulsory to make the game work. I would love to do more Jaguar games, although none of the major publishers would have much interest due to such a small market size. As for Goldeneye and other games, I have done over 30 games in my career. More as a publisher, but as a developer writing code for over 30. www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2017-08-10-death-threats-false-personas-and-philanthropy-the-untold-story-of-jane-whittaker
@@janewhittaker7808 My god, now _that_ is a life story! And you're not even done yet. Thank you so much for creating some of the best experiences I've ever had with games (AvP is still a benchmark game for me), and while the very best work tends to be above praise or criticism, here's hoping you get the recognition you so richly deserve. Nothing but well-wishes for your future endeavors.
What also makes this game unique are the control pad overlays for each of the 3 characters. The Jaguar has a bulky control pad with a huge middle section of number keys. Games come with plastic overlays that show you what each button does and usually features nice art work which makes the controller look better.
I’d LOVE to see this get a rerelease through like Limited Run or something on modern consoles. It’s a shame this once killer app is stranded on the Jag’s forgotten library.
00:20 - That should've been an awesome mash-up themed commercial to promote this game. Imagine all the copies sold in a matter of hours to make the Jaguar more relevant. Other than that, this was an informative and entertaining review. Although I never played this game, at least I got Aliens vs. Predator 2 on the PC and its expansion pack, Primal Hunt, though. 😁
My friend got this for Christmas 1994. We snuck the gift out of its box and played AVP and Doom at my house and then snuck it back in on Christmas Eve. This was my first experience with 64 bit [ or dual 32- bit whatever] gaming. We were thoroughly impressed with Doom and AVP. The Sound was hooked to my Bose Home Entertainment System, and was fantastic. Awesome all around experience, especially for 1994.
With 5 processors it's more like dual 64 bit and dual 32 bit and 16 bit (or 16/32 bit hybrid). But who's counting? I did and it's 208 bit (or 224 bit depending on how you count the M68000). In the end it's just numbers and not how these things work.
Back in the day, I had bought a Jaguar just to play this game and had no regrets whatsoever. Had all the other games on Jaguar had this level of polish, I feel that Atari would have had a fighting chance early on with Saturn and PlayStation.
DUDE! How you doin'? I agree with you there. Hell, if they had supplied the EU with more units, they may have had a better following. Seems the English were really hyped for this machine.
Greetings from Brazil! Master-Cast TV, this introduction was very good, congratulations! I had a Jaguar in 1994 and the Alien Vs Predator is my favorite game of this system, I see that you like this game a lot too, this is rare, at least once a year I play this game in the emulator. Thanks for the video!
Muito obrigado! I've noticed I have a lot of viewers in Brazil. Never imagined I'd get much reach out there. AWESOME SAUCE! Play on the emulator? Do you not have the console and game anymore?
Thanks for answering! I had to sell the Jaguar in 1995, there were few game releases and I invested in the purchase of a Playstation. I play Alien Vs Predator in a very satisfactory way in the emulator, have no graphic problem or other error. The emulator I use is the latest version of Virtual Jaguar (vj-20160613-win64). Congratulations for everything, success!
I was too young when this game was out, but i wanted to play so bad. My dad was really good at it, we actually had a VHS recording of him beating Lewis's campaign. Sadly we lost it over the years, not a moment aomeone can get back.
I remember playing this in a shop when it was brand new and being amazed. It was fun to play, looked fantastic for its time and yeah, I played as the Marine. I died.
It was, I agree, though I accept it was meant to be an obstacle. Funny how that concept carried over to Alien Trilogy, but it was only in harder settings (Raging Terror, and Xenomania).
You make me want to play this game again. It was one of a handful of titles I really liked on the Jag (the others being Tempest 2000, Iron Soldier and Doom). It makes me wish they had finished Legions of the Undead, which was previewed in Gamefan in an interview. It looked like Hellraiser-inspired models were used in an underground dungeon/crypt with digitization like AvP.
Thank you! It's kinda' like Alien Isolation, right? Yes, the game *does* have music, though it only kicks in when shit gets hot. Otherwise, the game's pure atmosphere. If it were wall-to-wall music, it would kinda' take the piss out of it.
Agreed. Music would have ruin the atmosphere of the game. Especially when walking into a room with use the hum of ambient noise then you hear the Predator whisper which causes a shiver of fear down your spine lol. Love it.
Just received my copy of avp today ... and it is fucking awesome...!!! How the fuck did the Jaguar not take over back in 94,, I always wanted one, never got it till now... and holy frig!!!! If I had played this back then... I would have shit.... simply amazing.....!!! Wtf happened?? A game like this on a console made in fucking America... baby!!! People we fucked up.... instead of this being Atari’s swan song, this should have been their massive return to power...I’m kicking myself for not buying this truly when it counted.... simply outstanding!!!!
LOL! I'm glad you're digging the game. Sadly, the reason why Atari's Jaguar didn't take off could fill a goddamn encyclopedia. From all the financial mistakes made prior to the unit's development, rushing it out the door with bugs and a weak launch line-up, to sticking with cartridges and not aiding developers early on. So much was working against the Jaguar it's really quite sad. If they had refined the chip set, gone with compact disc, aided developers with better tools and so on, the Jaguar could have put up a better fight.
Master-Cast TV so true... just sucks .... it really is a nice little system.. I am fucking loving it... I haven’t been this happy with a console since I got my Saturn... hey is kasumi ninja hard as fuck in your opinion? Because I am a mortal kombat veteran... and shit kn... is just kicking my ass... lol... I mean fuck dude!!! It’s tough... or I’m just getting old maybe... lol
Awesome, avp was one of the few games that I always wanted on my old Jag but never got the chance. I sure miss that console... For some reason I was obsessed with Theme Park on it as a kid. I've been watching your stuff off and on for weeks now and I have no idea why you don't have way more subscribers; this channel is legit! Keep up the good work!
What happened to the Jaguar? Did you have to sell it, or did Mother Nature decide to piss on your happiness? I've suffered through both scenarios, so I can relate. Could never get into games like Theme Park or Sim City. I wouldn't say they're bad; just not my thing. Did you have a lot of games for it? Thanks for the kind words. I hear that quite a bit. There's a lot of variables to consider, but I think the reason I fail at TH-cam is 1) I'm horrible at self-promotion. 2) No click-bait headers. 3) I have no identity. With the exception of the walk-through and "Let's Play" videos, you never see my face. Because of this, I've been told people can't connect with me. 4) I tend to focus on reviewing games; not talking about current trends. I have zero appeal as a gaming news site. 5) I've been told I'm an asshole, which I actually agree with. LOL! 6) No thumbnails where I'm making goofy expressions... Those are the big ones I think. Honestly, it's like fuck it. I'm not gonna' do that shit just to attract people that will watch for a few minutes than vanish. I like making stuff that lasts. People that watch fairly regularly, I get to talk to them about games, movies, music, etc. Basically, shit I enjoy discussing. The videos are like a glorified message board thread. I'd write a post, but I love making videos.
That's a shame sir, I think your channel is great and you definitely deserve more exposure. My Jag met it's maker unfortunately, it could never get past the logo screen which was a shame because between my uncle and I, we probably collectively had just about every game (and he had the CD add-on with all those juicy games!). The jaguar (and TurboGrafx - that's another story though) will always have a place in my heart, unfortunately the local shop has one sitting in it...but for $399!
This is a well-done review, maade with a lot of enthousiasm. I love that. You seem to be rather honest in your review, not forgetting to put the defaults into perspective.
Thanks, man! I appreciate it. I'd recommend the Doom video if you haven't seen it yet. That, or JagZombies. LOL! That's the only time I'll recommend anything involving the latter - ever. 😛😂
This game makes me wish I still had my jag! I actually hand drew maps for this game, including the air vents and where they connected back to the main map!
It's not too late. I know they're getting expensive, though it's doable. I fuckin' love this thing. Still surprises me, considering I past on it during release, fearing it wouldn't last (there weren't a ton games flooding out after all). However, I've since picked up 30 games for this wild beast and I enjoy damn near every minute (not all titles are winners, like Supercross 3D or Club Drive).
Damn! Thank you very much. I really appreciate that. While I like to think I knock out consistently good videos, I do tend to go above and beyond for anything Alien related. That, and Resident Evil.
Great review. I remember playing it at a friends house when it first released, and not really digging it. It's still one of a few Jag games I don't own. I'm going to reconsider that after watching this review.
Thank you very much, kind sir! I could see not liking it as a kid. Honestly, I didn't like Tomb Raider very much when it came out. I was like 13 or 14 then. If I wasn't killing zombies in a puzzle-laden mansion, or blowing up cars in an annual tournament, I didn't give a shit. Now that I'm 34, I can get sucked into it pretty hard.
Bought the Jag for this game. Beat the Alien and Predator campaign but got lost in the Marine campaign. I'd love it if Rebellion released a collection of all of their AVP games (I believe there are 4) on consoles and PC.
Yep! Jaguar, Classic 2000, AVP Requiem on PSP, and AVP 2010. Though i'd also love to see someone redo AVP Extinction from the PS2 days. That game was a lot of fun for what it was.
Great Review. So this is the original Aliens vs Predator. I missed it completely same as the Jaguar itself. But I am a big Fan of the PC Alien vs Predator and Aliens vs Predator 2. Awesome games. When I will get my own Jaguar Aliens vs Predator is among the games I want to get for the console for sure. The game still looks amazing. The Jaguar was a powerful machine for sure.
Thank you very much, kind sir. I don't game on PC, so I've never tried 'em. However, I love Aliens vs Predator on PS3/360. Still a favorite to this day. Wish they had included the Jaguar game as an unlockable bonus. That would've been sweet. Other games I'd recommend for Jaguar are Iron Soldier (exclusive), Battle Sphere (very expensive, so I'd invest in reproduction cart), Kasumi Ninja (not great, but fun in a so-bad-it's-good way), Flip Out (addictive puzzler), Wolfenstein 3-D (one of the best ports I've played) and Doom (no music is no problem). Those are just the games I have. Other games I want are Flashback (that's one of my "Catcher in the Rye" games), Ultra Vortek (sweet-looking fighting game), Tempest 2000, Protector SE, and Skyhammer.
Thanks a lot for the futher recommendations for the Jaguar. did not know that there is a Aliens Vs Predator Game as well for the Ps3 and Xbox 360. Always thought the last one was Aliens vs Predator 2 for the Pc back in the year 2000.I think I will check the "new Alien vs Predator out too for my Ps3.
Nice video and review! I've always wanted to play this game since I saw a "Proreview" in a GamePro magazine (around 1994) and it's really an amazing game. As you said, it's more like a survival horror from a FPS perspective and it has an enormous replay value. +Sub ;)
“The ultimate aim is to imagine a Virtual Reality helmet and just taking AVP as an example - each player chooses a character from the game, is in a V. R environment on the Nostromo, walking around with their own task and they can meet up, help each other out and stuff like that” ATARI UK’s Darryl Still not quite getting the concept of AVP it seems 😂
Sam Tramiel claimed the Sega Saturn would never be able to do AVP as good as the Jaguar could, well maybe less colours Sam, but Rebellion had started work on an Upgraded Saturn version using Quads, not polygons and Saturn:Hexen, Quake, Exhumed, Duke Nukem 3D and Alien Trilogy say Hi :-))
@@A31Chris Tramiel earnt a lot of it, use the press as free advertising, it's always going to haunt you and come back on you. But the media over look so much shit others pulled, especially UK Press and UK people. People not getting paid, yet work used. Developers trying to get stack more work done on top of what was agreed on Press letting junior artists take credit for work you did. Press letting you claim you worked on a flagship title at company X, yet game shipped years before you joined. They allow it all, yet still you see stories of The Tramiels UK software houses have just as much if not more to answer for, than the Tramiels yet how many blame Leonard Tramiel for a game being canned, rather than say our company was drowning under the debts of my previous company that failed? I took on too much, too soon, didn't have the resources, was juggling too many platforms.. No, it's always Leonard Tramiel did this or insisted that we do the other. I'd love to find that Tiertex coder who said Tiertex bosses, not Leonard insisted Supercross 3D be fully texture mapped.
One of my all-time favorite games. 5:02 Just take out the Queen from the door, step into the room to lure her over, then step back into the door, where she can't get you because she's too big. But watch out, once you get the Level 10 Card she gets back up again, so just run to the door. Predator = Easy Alien = Medium Marine = Hard Best to play in that order, first time playing through this game.
Bitch gets back up? I don't remember that. Was more concerned with the run from the computer to the escape pod. Ugh! Thanks for the reminder. That difficulty scale is totally accurate.
Master-Cast TV The save feature is more or less useless, it's best to beat the game in one go. But if you have to save, save in a elevator and close the door, so you are safe from any respawning enemies.
In my experience, saving in the elevator is not recommended. So often I'll 'restore' a game where I saved in the lift, only for the HUD to completely vanish. This is especially bad with the predator.
Nice review of one of my favorite games of all time, you got a new subscriber. I have beaten it with the Predator, with the Colonial Marine (might have used cheats), and reached the trapped Queen with the Alien. Absolutely love it when you get the Smartgun, you can mow down anything. Also love how the different groups will fight each other for you.
Thanks, man! I really appreciate it. This is definitely one of my favorites. I just got the Level 10 security card. Getting past the Queen was a real bitch. Didn't kill her; just ran past her and fried everything that came near me with the flamethrower. I haven't used any cheats as of yet. Still gotta' make the run to the escape pod. Ugh!
Since it was actually designed for the Jaguar, to re-build it and work around any kind of exclusivity deal Atari may have had in play, may have been deemed time consuming and costly. That, and - if I remember correctly - Probe were already working on Alien Trilogy?
Good review man keep it up.By the way you ever play the other avsp, fps games ? There was avsp 2000 for pc.Then again by 2010 you had a version of avsp for PS3,360,PC/Windows.Interesting enough all by rebellion developments.
Hey bro! Thanks. You rock! I haven't played any of the PC games, though I've played the 2010 game countless times. I even reviewed it back when I was My Life with SEGA. Great game! Visually and aurally, it's a better game, though much more linear. Still, very effective.
LOL! That's not how I play games. I play on a CRT with composite. That's how I played games as a kid, excluding the VCS and ColecoVision, and that is how I choose to play 'em today. Besides, investing in all that stuff would take money away from buying games, which I don't have a lot of. Master-Cast TV ain't exactly the March of Dimes.
This is just my opinion but Alien vs predator on jaguar was the best overall shooter game ever. I only beat the game once or twice it's really hard. Wish my jaguar hadn't stopped working.
this game always looked great ever since i first knew about it. the fact that you can play as 3 different characters and they play differently is impressive for the time. cant think of another FPS at the time where you can do that
I love AVP on the Jaguar. I remember first seeing it after renting the Atari Jaguar at a mom and pop rental store. I ended up buying it from them...my ex-girlfriend stole my Jaguar, AVP, Wittgenstein, and my copy of Doom. She knew how much it is worth and ran off with it when I broke up with her...I am going to have to purchase it again.
Oh my God! Dude, I'm sorry. That's fuckin' rough. I can relate to an extent. An ex broke my porcelain kangaroo, just like the one seen in Pulp Fiction, after we broke up. It was a birthday gift from my mom, was hard to come by then, and Fiction's one of my favorite movies... I was furious.
I appreciate that, though I wouldn't say it's worse. If she killed my fucking cat then, yeah, totally. However, my mom was able to replace the kangaroo a few years back, and the woman I'm with now isn't a vindictive bitch. Time mends shit. LOL! Rebuilding a collection's rough. All the shit you see in my videos is now my second attempt. My first collection went up in one of those delightful wild fires California's been suffering through. It was stunning, and I didn't think I'd rebuild, but I did. I appreciate what I have even more now. On top of that, I didn't have a Jaguar then, or a 3DO... Ultimately, when you get another Jag, you're gonna' love it that much more. You'll create new scores on the AvP cartridge, you can tackle Wolfenstein from the very beginning and ace that shit. With any luck, the person you're with now can share in the delight. I got Erica playing Rebooteroids and even Breakout 2000. Rebuild, my man. It's not too late.
Games World Magazine appears to of joined Gamesmaster TV show in basing it's review, 75% on the unfinished beta, as reviewers talk of game being devoid of any enemies for large sections of the game.
I think many of the people who complain about the frame rate of this game either were too young to remember the technical limitations of game consoles of that era or have forgotten. I do recall seeing commercials for Jaguar as a kid and being curious about the system, but then not hearing anything about it for over a decade until Google searching it out of a faint memory of the system. I still kick myself for selling mine, but at least there's emulation to hold me over
I think tastes just change. I mean, remember when people took umbrage with texture warping? Good, because neither do I. Apparently, that bugged programmers, though I never heard a peep from players. Not until recently, judging older games, claiming they haven't aged well. Fuck! I remember when people bitched about pixel-ridden graphics. Now, unless they can make each and every one through some ridiculous 4K up-conversion, overclocking the shit out of it for the "best image ever", it looks like garbage. It's a strange time we live in, sir... You wanna' know how I got these scars?
When I was reading the magazines back in the 90s this looked impressive, because digitised characters was a thing. And in photos looked cool. In hindsight Doom runs better than this. Also I think if you are looking for a Doom experience due to the perspective, the levels are a lot more basic too, similar more too Wolfenstein with the 90 degree angles. As for Jaggies, I remember not liking them on my PS1, but accepted them. I don’t have the nostalgia for them like the 16bit games. I do agree this is the type of game that made the Jaguar seem a generation ahead of the Mega Drive and SNES.
@@MasterCastTV there was a huge amount of effort made to support the highest frame rates we could get on AvP but at the end of the day there were significant bandwidth and memory latency problems compared to modern machines. The world rendering was done on the RISC chip and the AI and all the gameplay and player logic was done on the 68000 processor, using what was for the time, innovative multi threaded processing. Mike Beaton pushed the rendering as far as he could on the RISC and did an amazing job. On the gameplay side, I used hand optimised 68000 and sharing the processing over multiple cycles. In the end, the high definition (for the day) texturing took its toll on processing resources.
@@sloppynyuszi interestingly, talking about the 90 degree angles, that was actually a creative decision taken with Fox rather than a limitation of the rendering engine. A huge amount of care was taken to recreate as much of the environments in Aliens as possible, including the angular style of the movie sets as accurately as we could. We went in to crazy detail such as discussing with Fox the exact scale of the med lab windows and all sorts of stuff that individually you might not notice, but collectively we hoped would drive the experience of Aliens as you traversed the zones. Even furniture distribution and many other objects in world where organised in such a way to make you feel that you were going down creepy corridors. We avoided busy locations simply so you felt it was you, an Alien and a corridor, to ramp up the jumpiness of the player. AvP was never intended to be an FPS such as Doom, but something more strategic, with tension, nerves and fear dialled up to level 10!
Jane Whittaker you worked on the game? That’s so cool! I remember this game sticking out at the time as THE Jaguar game. Interesting that the 90 degree angles were a design choice. After seeing footage of it, it definitely isn’t trying to be doom, I think that’s marketing’s fault or my fault for thinking that. Sometimes these less successful consoles have games that never leave the console and we miss out. I think AvP and Iron soldier on the Jaguar seem like those games, and secretly I want to play Kasumi Ninja 🤫
I love the Alien vs Predator games on PC but I've never had the chance to play this one. I don't think the Jaguar was sold here in Brazil (at least I don't remember seeing one for sale back when I was a kid) but I'd love to try it someday.
Ouch! Yeah, I don't think it reached Brazil. Atari kept much of their stock in North America. They just didn't have the money needed to make sure all regions had it. Europe put up one Hell of a fight with a skeleton crew of people and little. Still, they managed to generate a lot of buzz. However, they didn't get units until much later, and not many at that. Atari made some serious marketing mistakes back then. They should've followed Sega's example and gone to Brazil.
Oh, you're in for a treat. If you ever get fed up, I highly recommend silverwings21 and his walk-through for the Marine scenario. It did help here and there.
@@mdotfella5524 yes. I have the game complete with box, manual, layers ans plastics. Tha jaguar I don't have the box internals. But I have everything else. :)
I had a jag when it launched avp was the main game i played shit scary in the dark, i liked lewis managed to beat it once but couldnt find my way to the escape pod and died ha ha then 2 friends killed it. 25 years later i bought a new jag and avp and its so much harder than i remember ive died a lot but man i love this game 👍
Great review MC. I remember booting this up for the first time. The way the Xenomorphs moved scared the shit outta me. Also, there might be a game that interests you. It's called Residence of Evil. It's basically a reimagining of RE but looks a shit ton like the game cube remake gameplay wise.
Thanks, man! Always appreciated. LOL! Honestly, I had the same experience. I feel stupid because I've played Aliens vs Predator on PS3, as well as Alien Isolation. Way more sophisticated and life-like, right? Still, this one got me. Gotta' hand it to Rebellion, man. I didn't know about the game until you mentioned it actually. It's now called "Vigil: Prophecy of the Bestowed." It looks good so far. Hopefully it comes out on PS4. I don't game on PC, and I don't have Xbox One.
Master-Cast TV Personally, I think it would be awesome if we went back to the time when games were made with passion, and not just to meet a market quota. This seems to be a step in the right direction.
I think many games are made with passion today, just as there were games produced then just to make a quick buck. Look at Acclaim for instance. We had Batman Forever on Genesis/SNES, which was an absolute mess. Admittedly, the developer had a very simple, clean idea as to how to make the game. Nothing original, but it would have worked. Then Acclaim steps in and says, "Hey! Mortal Kombat's popular! Beef up the fighting, and add multiplayer." That threw everything off course. Again, let us look at The Crow: City of Angels on PSX/Saturn. It was supposed to be a beat-'em-up, but Acclaim was like, "Resident Evil is blowing everybody away. Can't you make it look like that?" As you expect, we got dog-shit... Personally, I feel advantages developers had then over now is experimentation and limitation. The Jaguar and 3-D graphics in general were still new and fresh. Rebellion was a small team. Small often equals "easier to manage." There's a greater purity of vision, you know? Also, working around limitations, using them to the game's advantage. They couldn't have music during game-play, so what did they do? An audio loop that creates atmosphere, making it more immersive in the process. God, have you seen the Game Hut channel? He's a developer that talks about the coding process and shares some design secrets from his days at Traveler's Tales. It's AMAZING! How they were able to work within the confines of Genesis limited hardware and create some startling visuals... Nowadays? You can do anything. There's literally no limits now except those in the developer's minds. Now much of the creativity has to be funneled down to play-style and mechanics, and the message has to be clear for a team of over a hundred people; not just a handful of folks pushing 15 hour days. Like you, I feel much of the output was better then because we had more experimentation. Things were still new. It was easier to find hardware's ceiling and say, "Okay! How do we get around this thing?"
The Jaguar totally eluded me throughout my life, I had no idea it could handle FPS so well. Im gonna be glued to your channel learning about the Jag now! Do you think i should try pick one up?
Oh, totally! It's a strong console so long as you're willing to put in the work. Other first-person shooters worth having are Doom (of course) and Wolfenstein 3-D. The latter's a fantastic port. Sharp sprites, smooth frame rate, solid control, and fantastic audio. In addition, you get a chain-gun, flamethrower and rocket launcher, plus backpacks for added ammo storage. Well worth picking up. I'm fucking love the Jaguar, so I'm a tad bias. If these games look good to you though, I'd say do it! Just sooner rather than later. More and more collectors are coming 'round to the Jaguar and prices just keep climbing. Do it before it gets stupid expensive. The Jaguar CD for example tends to fetch $250-$300, and that's just for a busted unit. Act as soon as possible.
Dude, so much envy. I'd love to get a Vectrex, especially after seeing some of the homebrew games available for it, but I just can't do it right now. Still, looks fuckin' sweet.
Hey, my partner in pain! Hahaha! Thanks for checking out the original video. I appreciate it. I'll be sure to see yours since I've missed out on PC gaming almost entirely.
I Still have my Jaguar. Atari Jaguar was actually ahead of its time. It was indeed 64 bits. If the N64 released in 1993 before the technology caught up the N64 might have suffered the same fate. Jaguar was tough and to time consuming I.e to difficult for developers in 1993.
I agree. Folks still make silly comparisons though, as if the bits still matter. It's like comparing the Intellivision - a 16-bit console - to Genesis and Super Nintendo. Yeah, they're 16-bit machines, yet Intellivision came out in 1980 while the other two launched in '88 and '90. Design advances rather quickly, leading to more powerful chips. Still, the Jaguar failed, so folks pick on it.
Dude, you convinced me. This is probably the best video review I've seen on this game so far. Seriously, it was well written, concise (usually one of your strong points), thorough, and honest. Lots of people in game press or on the internet have talked about this game, brought it up in lists or whatever but it always comes off as a vanity pick, or they never have much to say about the game. Like they picked AvP on Jaguar because "HUR it's the only good game on the system LOL" or they're a little more serious about it...but again, they don't really go into detail about anything or offer any kind of analysis. Great job man.
Wow! Considering how many videos there are available for Alien vs Predator, that's some serious praise. Thank you! I know what you mean though. Before writing my take, I read many written reviews and endured quite a few videos. You know, trying to get the general consensus on the game. It was either a breeze in which they glossed over much of the experience, or they came off like an instruction manual. Of course, so often I'd hear "it's the only good game on the platform" or "one of the best." Honestly, I got tired of hearing it after awhile. It was like three videos in a row. LOL! Of course, the best reviews were the people that hated it! The game's just mentioned in passing when talking about the hardware, and it's generally a four word review consisting of "I think it sucks." Deep, man! Hahaha!
Yeah, that's pretty much exactly what I'm talking about. That kind of stuff is just annoying to see. It's always cool to get a unique take on something.
It does, and I lose my shit internally more and more when I see it. Kinda' like when people use terms like "hidden gem" and "influential." Those two were used recently to describe Clockwork Knight and I was like, "Are you kidding?" Seriously, neither term applies. Clockwork Knight is not "hidden" in any way. Most Saturn fans know about for it was one of a handful of games available at launch, and is generally used to illustrate how lackluster a few of those games were. Whether it's a "gem" or not is open for debate... As for "influential", iretrogamer pointed out that it must have had an impact on Toy Story because they're so similar. Yes, Clockwork Knight was released a year earlier than Toy Story, but that movie went into development back in '91 and was inspired by Pixar's award winning short, Tin Toy, which came out in '88. Seriously, I don't get why proper research is so hard to commit to when making a video.
Master-Cast TV no problem.. TH-cam has been acting up on my for the past 2 months so I know the struggle ..always happy to see an upload from ya no matter what time it comes out
Master-Cast TV One time my audio was really fucked up and I thought it was my rendering but TH-cam was acting weird that day and caused it .. this was about 2 months ago
The AVP team dispute claims made by Jane Whittaker of Easter Egg content hidden on the cartridge : “Purple Hampton and Jane’s Grunke: “We spent allof the room we had on the main gameplay. Unfortunately that didn’t leave any room for any easter eggs…”
It's nice to see some folks still love this game. For me, it was well worth the wait. I dig the Marine scenario. Just finished it again a few days ago, but as the Alien.
Master-Cast TV i once almost beat the game set the self destruct but got lost and BOOM 😫 the tension of the game is amazing you 💩 yourself when an alien gets you from behind 😂
I'd say it's worth it. I'm still playing this, along with Tempest 2000 and Iron Soldier. There *are* some great games for this little console. If you're gonna' get one though, do it sooner rather than later. These things are only getting more expensive. If you should find you don't like Jaguar after a few weeks, you can easily re-sell it. To say this machine is in demand is an understatement. Just something to consider.
This is the one game I wanted to play when I was a kid and still never got a chance to play it. Which leads me to ask, can you do a full playthrough or this game?? Please lol 2:05 "chomping at the bit" what does that mean?? Making you eager to play?
Hey, if you've got the money and the space, I say go for it. With my finances and spacial limitations, I generally narrow it down to about 5 to 15 games. If it has that, I can justify the purchase to myself. Admittedly, it was this game that really had me stoked for Jaguar when it first came out. I would've bought it just for Alien vs Predator.
Fantastic review. I love your use of film clips too. Personally I think no music works perfectly for this game, makes the game scarier - the Aliens running at me still makes me crap my pants lol.
@@alexandertheresurrection2810 Ah! No worries. The 'options' button activates the cloak. '6' will shift the spectrum. The color scheme in certain areas will make it harder to make out soldiers, so you can flick through 'em until you find one that suits your situation. I kinda' envy you. While I still love playing it today, it's not quite like the first time. Having all that new ground to cover after years of curiosity and wonder made me feel like a kid again. Well worth it. Hope you enjoy it, bro!
@@antoneckhart4010 Exactly! The only thing that really did take off is the ship in cybermorph, but whatever you do, make sure you "avoid the ground" or you'll more likely be asked a 64 Bit question like "where did you learn to fly?", Although I can see that being annoying to some gamers, it was kinda revolutionary to have voice in video games back then since it wasn't very common at that time
@@antoneckhart4010 Primarily because of the price point and because the system just didn't have a lot to really offer by comparison. The hardware was just too overly engineered. It was ambitious, that much is certain.
@@OpenMawProductions people questioned weather it was 64bit..i think it was split in half with sound. i wish the dreamcast didnt fail. segas should have teamed with Sony.
Just so you know, it's getting a little pricey now. However, there's an SD cart in development, and there's the Skunk board that stores two ROMs and save data for each. Just plug it into your computer and trade out games whenever. Also, thinking your a fan of premium picture and sound, it offers a ton of options without modification.
Yep! Out of the box RGB/SCART ready. Just need to get the cable for it. Sadly, many units are sold with their original cords, meaning you'll likely get stuck with RF upon purchase. It's fucking HORRENDOUS!
It amazing how the negative Jag reviewers claim playing as the Predator is about unplayable. Obviously they just turned on the game for some video to go with their anti Jaguar script.
The Predator? Really? I've heard people claim the Alien was unplayable for sure. People really get huffy over that since you don't have traditional weapons, and cocooning Marines can be sluggish. If folks say the Predator's unplayable, they didn't bother to read the goddamn instructions even once.
I did develop a version with Aliens climbing walls, predator nets etc, but it just wouldnt fit the cartridge, and at the time I used the biggest cartridge that was available for the machine. Something had to give, and it was features such as those, as much to my disappointment as anyone. However, I hope the game made up for it in atmosphere, gameplay and AI. Andrew Whittaker No, the Aliens climbing the walls comes from the PROPOSAL document that was submitted to 20th Century Fox for a planned CD version of AVP.. They wanted more advanced A. I routines, different classes of Xenomorphs and different behaviour patterns.
So I started looking at how a Spiritual Successor to AVP could be done today on the Jaguar. And what it would need to even match commercial titles of the same era. I started looking at Alien Breed 3D II:The Killing Grounds on the Amiga, as it does a lot of things Jaguar AVP and Doom doesn't... And because it and Alien Breed 3D,were the work of a LONE coder.. ANDY CLITHEROE So far Jane hasn't spoken of recruiting anyone else for his potential crowd funded AVP sucsessor, so it's an idea match in that respect. It's source code has been released into the public domain, (as has Jaguar AVP code and to date, nobody has ever found the beer drinking, cigarette smoking Predator code Jane swears was present in the retail version) and has been described as 'It megabytes of undocumented, disorganized, messy assembly language.' Andy himself a genius for pulling it all off. Yet Jaguar AVP was built by 2 teams (Rebellion and Atari) consisting of around 30 people and that was just the Jaguar version. Jane is talking about a game on PC, Mobile and Jaguar. So... The top end version is a 4 Meg file, with all the sound fx (samples from An American Werewolf In London, Doom etc) but there is no in-game music, Graphics for an Amiga title are impressive :texture mapping, lighting effects etc. It even featured rippling, transparent water effects, something not found in Doom.. The level design features multiple 3D floors, with varying depths, on top of each other (again something not found in Doom or AVP, both sometimes referred to as 2.5D games) there are 16 levels with a level editor so the player can create their own. The game also features a variety of different creatures, who, run, crawl along the ground, fly etc, they attack in packs at times, but the A. I is line of sight attack based, they can dodge to one side to avoid your fire, they roamed the levels freely, rather than staying in set areas waiting for the player to trigger them.. it was rather hit and miss, but you can't fault the ambition. Xenomorphs are built from sprites in the majority.. Since Disney own the Alien license, you'd have to create your own range of Xenomorphs. Hopefully you'd be looking at something beyond generic hounds, robots etc It featured a wide variety of weapons: Assault rifle, double barrel shotgun, plasma cannon, grenade launcher, rocket launcher, Plasma/Tripple Plasma, Blaster and Laser/Mega Laser. It sold around 500,000 units. A Dreamcast /PC sequel, Alien Breed:Conflict, was annouced, but cancelled due to being over ambitious, with the core gameplay now consisting of you controlling a squad of soldiers, carrying out covert operations, very Aliens Colonial Marine Core in it's thinking.. Now from what i have read of Jane's concept talk on Twitter, Jane wants vastly improved A. I routines, Xenomorphs crawling up walls etc, yet Jane's own AVP routines killed the frame rate on AVP, taking it from 60 FPS, to around 15 FPS and if Jane still intends to run the new routines on the Jaguar's 68000.... I dread to imagine what frame rate we would see. Jane wants more variety in level design, mission objectives like rescue stranded Colonists, set traps (Sentry Guns? explosive devices), more variety in environments (flooded tunnels etc) 🤔 It also faces stiff competition : Alien Breed 3D it's was Remade in the GZ Doom Engine.. resulting in much more responsive controls, far better framerate etc. There have been Total Conversions for PC DOOM, DOOM II and Quake, turning them into Aliens, Alien Trilogy etc. Source code for Jaguar AVP, Checkered Flag, Club Drive, Fight for Life, Hover Strike: Unconquered Lands, I-War, and Breakout 2000, have all been released, nobody has written new Jaguar titles using it. Someone was attempting a Total Conversion to bring Jaguar AVP to the PC, using GZ DOOM, died... Someone else was attempting it using the Unreal 4.0 Engine and that too appears to of been abandoned. Jane has annouced ambitious titles before that came to nothing : Project Artemis on PC CD, Playstation, Saturn and Jaguar CD (A RPG title),talks of in negotiations with major fantasy writer.. Power Crystal on 3DO M2, then to be reworked for today's systems, for a major publisher, yet seems to of been abandoned once again. At present it's just 'harmless' speculation of how a similar game could be done, but if it becomes a crowd funded project, your talking other people's money and that is an entirely different ball game. The fan projects and commercial projects to bring new slants on Alien Breed 3D/Jaguar AVP always fall by the wayside due to huge amounts of work involved. Sorry, but I just fail to see how Jane hopes to recreate something like AVP, as an individual, on multiple platforms, when so many others attempted similar and gave up.
The system for the predator looks great, an experience system counting on the player to roleplay as a predator. Solid game, too bad the jaguar has this unfair bad name and its like we cant trust the system for good stuff
It gets a lot of shit, and much of that I feel is because they'll read an article or watch a video for something entirely unrelated, then start hitting up all their other content. Eventually, they come across a Jaguar review or retrospective, coming from a casual that never really gave it much thought, or they wanna' hop on a bandwagon. It sucks, but that's the way of things. Same with Saturn and 32X to an extent.
I definitely recommend playing with the Predator first so you can get a lay of the land. That, and it's more action heavy. Kinda' makes for an easy transition into the more *survival horror* themed scenarios.
Yeah, not easy to find in Brazil. You'd have to get it from US, EU or - if you've got a bag full of lucky charms saved for a rainy day - JP. I imagine the shipping costs would blow.
I wouldn't really compare the two for their aims are different. Wolfenstein 3D is a frenzied shooter; Alien vs. Predator is a dungeon crawler, or "survival horror" if you prefer.
It has a couple. Aside from Wolfenstein 3D, it doesn't have much. Both Escape from Monster Manor and Killing Time come off more like dungeon crawlers to me. 3DO is just....sad.
I don't see how that applies here. We're not taking trophies in the game. Not in the traditional sense as depicted in the films; it's simply killing. Many kills made in the movies are done while the hunter is cloaked. In the game, player's are penalized for killing *while* cloaked, with the explanation being that it's dishonorable. Therefore, it conflicts with the movies. Unless, of course, their performance is always monitored by elders and later punished for their conduct.
@@MasterCastTV in the movies trophy kills were the only kills that had any honor attached to them. Like king willie in the alley, how the predator purposely uncloaked then cut his head off and was walking with it. When he took the spine of bill paxton in the subway tunnel uncloaked, when he ripped the spine out of billy in the first movie, uncloaked. Billy saw him, that is why he stopped and cut his chest. When the predator is just making straight kills like in the war zone in the beginning of the 2nd film, he is cloaked UNTIL he jumps down and kills all the high ranking drug lords UNCLOAKED. His cloaked kills are basically like him making a point "doesn't matter how many there are" kinda thing. HOWEVER when it comes to trophy taking the job must be done uncloaked from start to finish hence if the kill is made a trophy is taken. When you see the head of the xenomorph in the ship, when danny glover enters, why do you think there is only 1 trophy. We all know if there is 1 alien, likely there are ten more. That one xenomorph skull shows that it was a fight between a uncloaked predator and a xenomorph from start to finish and obviously the predator won, that one. The predator is actually EXTREMELY METHODICAL, more so than both the marine and alien. He actuals judges what prey is considered a trophy or not. He took BILL PAXTON supposedly he is nicknamed COWBOY or some crap bc he is a really good cop TROPHY. Peter keys WAS GOING TO BE A TROPHY until DANNY GLOVER blew open the warehouse doors and damaged the predator and which that point the pedator looked at danny glover and thought "BETTER TROPHY" and then blasted peter keys with shoulder cannon. If danny glover would have never entered the warehouse peter keys would have been a definite trophy for the taking. The broken EMP system on the predator, the damage from the shotgun and the fact danny glover took his mask off also taking his visual settings, made him a better trophy causing the predator to just chop Peter keys in half. Since the predators are century hunters and can probably live 1000 years, the blade cutting through the 5 slabs of beef and Peter keys isnt that far fetched do to the fact a century kitana can be taken care of to the point it can be a 3 body blade. Everyone wants to be batman or super i want to be the predator lol Also what you said could be true because when that 1 predator died at the end of 2 a whole bunch were around to collect the body. Yeah the game doesnt make you collect trophy heads however wouldnt the fact of obtaining weapons the way you do in the game, be the trophy itself??
@@aliencatcrew3336 Again, we're not talking about the collecting of trophies here; we're talking about killing. In the first film, the hunter didn't de-cloak when it killed Blaine, Hawkins or Dillon. Billy's death is off screen, so that's open for debate. Regardless, it took their skulls as trophies - kills made *while* cloaked. Whether the weapons are considered trophies or not is irrelevant. Being penalized for killing the Marines and xenomorphs conflicts with vague rules established in the films produced at the time. One important thing to bear in mind here is this - it's a video game. Pretty sure hunters within the mythology don't use a "point system" to earn weapons. LOL! Also, it wasn't meant as harsh criticism; just a humorous observation. 😁😂
@@MasterCastTV well i thought it was a humorous conversation thats why i kept up with it lol lol. Im actually laughing over here ha!!! Thank you for the humor especially in a time of societal retardation Strap this on your saur ass blaine!!!
@@aliencatcrew3336 Yeah, it's conversations like this that make men into goddamn sexual tyrannosauruses....just like me. 😉😂😂 Don't get me started on the current state of society. I work at Costco. Walking out of work only to see discarded gloves and wipes strewn across our parking lot reminds me just how stupid people can be. It's disheartening. Kills me on social media as well because most folks just wanna' talk about the here-and-now, and I'm like, "Yeah, it's fucked up. Can we just talk about VHS and how annoying it is that my Star Wars tapes lack Episode's III, VII, VIII and IX?" 😝

Great review nice to see someone who gets this amazing game its the reason i bought a jag and still play it today 👍
I’d LOVE to see this get a rerelease through like Limited Run or something on modern consoles. It’s a shame this once killer app is stranded on the Jag’s forgotten library.
phoenix emulator doubles the frame rate with like 1 texture bug and thats it
00:20 - That should've been an awesome mash-up themed commercial to promote this game.
"You can be the Alien, you can be the Predator...or you can be lunch"
This is one of the best games ever made for any console use to scare the crap out of me.
I remember playing this in a shop when it was brand new and being amazed. It was fun to play, looked fantastic for its time and yeah, I played as the Marine. I died.
This was probably my first survival horror experience, good stuff. The alien acid was very annoying though, especially in the air ducts.
It was, I agree, though I accept it was meant to be an obstacle.
Funny how that concept carried over to Alien Trilogy, but it was only in harder settings (Raging Terror, and Xenomania).
This game and doom really showed what the jag could do... outstanding video.. subscribed
You nailed it about the music. It sets the atmosphere. It wouldn’t be the same with music at all.
It’s tough... or I’m just getting old maybe... lol
Rebellion also made a PC remake in 1999 or 2000, which led to a couple of sequels. All good games.
Never played the PC titles, though I have the one that came out on PS3/360. Fucking AWESOME game!
Master-Cast TV Aliens vs Predators. Yeah, that's the third game in the series. Rebellion haven't lost their touch.
Oh man this game. The memories taking turns with my best friend growing up. 😭
Yes this was the first 3D game I've ever played. It's was good for 1994. The best Aliens versus Predator game I ever played was PS3 version.
Jaguar games always had this hollow feeling. Like Iron Soldier or Cybermorph. They always felt like on their own planet left in space
You seem to be rather honest in your review, not forgetting to put the defaults into perspective.
second Jag video i'm watching from you... good shit brotha! 🤘
Thanks, man! I appreciate it. I'd recommend the Doom video if you haven't seen it yet. That, or JagZombies. LOL! That's the only time I'll recommend anything involving the latter - ever. 😛😂
Would love to see a playthrough of this
This game makes me wish I still had my jag!
Master-Cast TV - this game, and iron soldier were my favorite games for the system.
Grouncontrol I’m doing that very thing as I’m playing through it.
doc jay - cool! I miss my jag, avp, and the maps I drew for it!
One of your best vids so far. Really professional montage, dope commentary and it actually made me want to play this! Congrats!
Traded everything I had at the time in the 90s for the system and this GAME...
Wow! What all did you trade?
Wasn't Atari Jaguar hard to find?
Bought the Jag for this game. Beat the Alien and Predator campaign but got lost in the Marine campaign. I'd love it if Rebellion released a collection of all of their AVP games (I believe there are 4) on consoles and PC.
Yep! Jaguar, Classic 2000, AVP Requiem on PSP, and AVP 2010.
Though i'd also love to see someone redo AVP Extinction from the PS2 days. That game was a lot of fun for what it was.
Probably cost a fortune to get the rights to do it
@@ShanGamer1981with Disney now holding them, you bet.
I'm still waiting for decent Jag emulation to come along, because I'd love to play this, but I am not plunking down THAT kind of cash to do so.
R environment on the Nostromo, walking around with their own task and they can meet up, help each other out and stuff like that”
ATARI UK’s Darryl Still not quite getting the concept of AVP it seems 😂
I think that the cocoon mechanic sounds great.
Yeah everyone talked a lot of shit especially back then. And for all the stress Sam had a heart attack over it. Let him rest.
@@A31Chris Tramiel earnt a lot of it, use the press as free advertising, it's always going to haunt you and come back on you.
But the media over look so much shit others pulled, especially UK Press and UK people.
People not getting paid, yet work used.
Developers trying to get stack more work done on top of what was agreed on
Press letting junior artists take credit for work you did.
Press letting you claim you worked on a flagship title at company X, yet game shipped years before you joined.
They allow it all, yet still you see stories of The Tramiels
UK software houses have just as much if not more to answer for, than the Tramiels yet how many blame Leonard Tramiel for a game being canned, rather than say our company was drowning under the debts of my previous company that failed?
I took on too much, too soon, didn't have the resources, was juggling too many platforms..
No, it's always Leonard Tramiel did this or insisted that we do the other.
I'd love to find that Tiertex coder who said Tiertex bosses, not Leonard insisted Supercross 3D be fully texture mapped.
One of my all-time favorite games.
5:02 Just take out the Queen from the door, step into the room to lure her over, then step back into the door, where she can't get you because she's too big. But watch out, once you get the Level 10 Card she gets back up again, so just run to the door.
Predator = Easy
Alien = Medium
Marine = Hard
Best to play in that order, first time playing through this game.
Bitch gets back up? I don't remember that. Was more concerned with the run from the computer to the escape pod. Ugh! Thanks for the reminder.
That difficulty scale is totally accurate.
+Master-Cast TV
It's best to clear the path to the escape pod before you hit the self-destruct button, makes things a lot easier.
So am I learning. Really wish I had opted to do it in one run. Having all the aliens/predators return upon restoring a game fucking hurts.
Master-Cast TV
The save feature is more or less useless, it's best to beat the game in one go.
Ugh!
Why wasn't this game ported to any other system? When I was a young kid I wanted the jaguar JUST FOR THIS GAME
Someone get this man a Scart cable and OSSC, great review!
Sorry to hear your Jaguar stopped working. When was this, and do you still have it? Did she power on at least?
Yep, until it was topped by its PC sequel
this game always looked great ever since i first knew about it. the fact that you can play as 3 different characters and they play differently is impressive for the time. cant think of another FPS at the time where you can do that
Great review of the game, thank you.
Still play this on my Jaguar
AvP classic on steam has the aliens climbing on walls.. it rocks. but no cacooning
It's a feature Atari wanted in future Jag AVP games.
It was in their 1995 AVP CD wish list.
@@MasterCastTV
Oh, man that's even worse...mine of course I loved but yours has actual attachment. I am sorry that happened to you man.
@Mastema Nah. I was smart. I've had that uncomfortable hunk of metal my ass two years now. 😝😆😆
Great video. Review was spot on everything. Loved this game and miss my Jaguar :(
I love the Alien vs Predator games on PC but I've never had the chance to play this one.
Just picked this up for the Jag the other week (first time ever playing it)! Great review.
Oh, you're in for a treat. If you ever get fed up, I highly recommend silverwings21 and his walk-through for the Marine scenario. It did help here and there.
The Jaguar should've had more movie based video games like Boyz n the hood vs menace 2 society, now that might've been another great crossover
great review. you made me want to turn on my jaguar to play this game again.
Haha! Thank you, cap'n! I appreciate it. I've been playing it again myself, as the Alien. I'm on level three now. Making good progress.
gabrielmassa wait, you still have this game along with the Jaguar??

@@MasterCastTV Oh jesus. It's gonna have to go on my list. The Vectrex is my holy grail 😁
Dude, so much envy. I'd love to get a Vectrex, especially after seeing some of the homebrew games available for it, but I just can't do it right now. Still, looks fuckin' sweet.
This and the Capcon arcade were the only ways to love it.
Good review.
Still, the Jaguar failed, so folks pick on it.
great video! ONe of the best on this subject. Kudos!
Perfect timing ...Insomnia is kicking my ass tonight!

Thanks, bro! Good to know I can still hold your interest after all these years. ;)
Loved that outro music.
Ha! Terminator on SMS. Don't love the game very much, but the music's fuckin' SWEET!
Master-Cast TV oh wow.
I loved the jaguar console and AVP was the best game on it, now i have both again 25 years later and love it prefer the marine
This video was perfect and did justice to a great classic game
Damn! Thanks, bro. I appreciate it very much. Definitely tried for this one. The Alien/Predator franchise tends to make me more thorough than usual.
I want to play this game so bad but the jaguar costs a fortune :'(
This game make me really want to buy Atari Jaguar.
Please lol
2:05 "chomping at the bit" what does that mean?? Making you eager to play?
This game is definitely on the list for my collection, looks way too good to pass up and yes I’m that type of guy that buys a system for 1 game lol
I never had a jaguar, but this game is awesome ! Good stuff man.
If I've made you want to collect Jaguar, I'm deeply sorry. These things are a bitch to find in your neck of the woods.
Master-Cast TV, yes i know. Here in Belgium i have seen it only one time.
Wow! That's lucky. Here the Japanese received more units, and seeing one there is like witnessing the second coming. LOL!
Fantastic review. I love your use of film clips too. Personally I think no music works perfectly for this game, makes the game scarier - the Aliens running at me still makes me crap my pants lol.
Great review! It's still a stunning title, even if it's not for everyone.
Thank you very much! I took a little more time on this one, though it was necessary. It's a bit larger.
I just ordered this game on eBay. Can’t wait for it to arrive. 😀
I highly recommend playing as the Predator first, just to get the lay of the land. That, and no hunting for key cards. Did you get the overlays?
Master-Cast TV No, cartridge only
@@alexandertheresurrection2810 Ah!
That's a pretty good review!
Games like this prove that the Atari Jaguar is more powerful than the Sega Genesis and super Nintendo
Big time. It just didnt take off. Pity.
Well, yeah. But once the N64, the PlayStation and the Saturn hit the scene, the Jaguar was doomed
@@OpenMawProductions people questioned weather it was 64bit..i think it was split in half with sound.
i wish the dreamcast didnt fail. segas should have teamed with Sony.
Dont lie #MasterCastTV you fucking love that Saturn DooM
LMAO! Dude, please....thinking about it makes me cry.
Now I want to play this. Thank you.
My pleasure! Just don't make any other plans when you do decide to play it. Really dug exploring that station, blasting aliens and predators.
I could never find the level 10 card! After killing the alien Queen it was nowhere to be found.
Killer review, man! Love your quips and analogies, too LOL
Thanks, bro! You rock. Do you have a Jaguar?
Master-Cast TV Unfortunately, I never managed to snag one. One day, though...
Master-Cast TV Yeah, Jag has always been a bit on the higher side. Does it do RGB/SCART out of the box?
Yep! Out of the box RGB/SCART ready. Just need to get the cable for it. Sadly, many units are sold with their original cords, meaning you'll likely get stuck with RF upon purchase. It's fucking HORRENDOUS!
Love that quote from "Heathers".
Fucking love that movie.
If folks say the Predator's unplayable, they didn't bother to read the goddamn instructions even once.
cool review. You get a sub, bud. 👍🏼
Thanks, man! You rock. Sorry there aren't more new videos. It's a busy time. However, there's some cool stuff coming.
Despite a massive 4 page review, Spanish magazine, Ultima Generacion, only awarded this 7/10.
Playstation Alien Trilogy by comparison pulled in 8/10
I did develop a version with Aliens climbing walls, predator nets etc, but
it just wouldnt fit the cartridge, and at the time I used the biggest
cartridge that was available for the machine. Something had to give, and it
was features such as those, as much to my disappointment as anyone.
However, I hope the game made up for it in atmosphere, gameplay and AI.
Andrew Whittaker
No, the Aliens climbing the walls comes from the PROPOSAL document that was submitted to 20th Century Fox for a planned CD version of AVP..
They wanted more advanced A. I routines, different classes of Xenomorphs and different behaviour patterns.
Jaguar FOREVER! :-)
Fuckin' A!
beautiful man
Hahaha! That it is. Gorgeous game.
What about alien vs predator for the pc in 1999 by rebellion?
I would love to watch a full playthrough of this game, if that is possible
So I started looking at how a Spiritual Successor to AVP could be done today on the Jaguar.
And what it would need to even match commercial titles of the same era.
I started looking at Alien Breed 3D II:The Killing Grounds on the Amiga, as it does a lot of things Jaguar AVP and Doom doesn't...
And because it and Alien Breed 3D,were the work of a LONE coder.. ANDY CLITHEROE
So far Jane hasn't spoken of recruiting anyone else for his potential crowd funded AVP sucsessor, so it's an idea match in that respect.
It's source code has been released into the public domain, (as has Jaguar AVP code and to date, nobody has ever found the beer drinking, cigarette smoking Predator code Jane swears was present in the retail version) and has been described as 'It megabytes of undocumented, disorganized, messy assembly language.'
Andy himself a genius for pulling it all off.
Yet Jaguar AVP was built by 2 teams (Rebellion and Atari) consisting of around 30 people and that was just the Jaguar version.
Jane is talking about a game on PC, Mobile and Jaguar.
So...
The top end version is a 4 Meg file, with all the sound fx (samples from An American Werewolf In London, Doom etc) but there is no in-game music,
Graphics for an Amiga title are impressive :texture mapping, lighting effects etc.
Hopefully you'd be looking at something beyond generic hounds, robots etc
It featured a wide variety of weapons:
Assault rifle, double barrel shotgun, plasma cannon, grenade launcher, rocket launcher, Plasma/Tripple Plasma, Blaster and Laser/Mega Laser.
Jane wants more variety in level design, mission objectives like rescue stranded Colonists, set traps (Sentry Guns? explosive devices), more variety in environments (flooded tunnels etc) 🤔
It also faces stiff competition :
Alien Breed 3D it's was Remade in the GZ Doom Engine.. resulting in much more responsive controls, far better framerate etc.
Jane has annouced ambitious titles before that came to nothing :
Project Artemis on PC CD, Playstation, Saturn and Jaguar CD (A RPG title),talks of in negotiations with major fantasy writer..
Same with Saturn and 32X to an extent.
damn i am starting to really like the jag.....this looks cool as shit!i always liked predator anyway he s a fucking killing machine!!
I definitely recommend playing with the Predator first so you can get a lay of the land. That, and it's more action heavy. Kinda' makes for an easy transition into the more *survival horror* themed scenarios.
@@MasterCastTV cool!
d so am I for the right price.
Always wanted to play this, but again, it didn't work well on the emulator. :( I think I need a new computer xD great review
KAMUI PLAYS A new computer? A Jaguar would be cheaper...and cooler.
Yeah, but in Brazil probably the new computer would be cheaper
Yeah, not easy to find in Brazil. You'd have to get it from US, EU or - if you've got a bag full of lucky charms saved for a rainy day - JP. I imagine the shipping costs would blow.
Great video
Thanks, bro! Have you played this one?
Great game, but I like Wolf 3D a bit more. Arguably the best console version (against the 3DO)
I wouldn't really compare the two for their aims are different. Wolfenstein 3D is a frenzied shooter; Alien vs. Predator is a dungeon crawler, or "survival horror" if you prefer.
@@MasterCastTV Yeah, they are different sub genres. I have a Jaguar emulator called Phoenix, which also emulates 3DO, both consoles have great FPS
It has a couple. Aside from Wolfenstein 3D, it doesn't have much. Both Escape from Monster Manor and Killing Time come off more like dungeon crawlers to me. 3DO is just....sad.
@@MasterCastTV You missed the GBA version, which was also in cartridge
Alien vs. Predator? It's not the same game.
I think you need to go back and complete the game as a human ;)
Oh, I will. Just got a podcast to record, and a birthday to prepare for.
It doesnt really go against the movie because if you watch predator 1 and 2 every time he takes a trophy, he is uncloaked.
Everyone wants to be batman or super i want to be the predator lol
Also what you said could be true because when that 1 predator died at the end of 2 a whole bunch were around to collect the body.
Thank you for the humor especially in a time of societal retardation
Strap this on your saur ass blaine!!!
@@aliencatcrew3336 Yeah, it's conversations like this that make men into goddamn sexual tyrannosauruses....just like me. 😉😂😂
Don't get me started on the current state of society.
