In my opinion one of the best GCDO solo's. It has everything you could want to hear in a solo; variety of styles, dynamics, interesting phrasing, ability to play matched and traditional, quirkiness, storytelling, building upon an idea, chops, pocket, stick tricks (even if they are a bit cheap), melodic, easy to follow even for non-drummers, technical ability and mastery of pretty much everything he played.
Incredibly encouraging to see a winner in the last 10 years who didn't use the Octapad. Like to think its still possible. This was by far the best display of actual drumming skill in the Drum Off championships over that time period. He deserved it.
Dude this guy killed it! He's got groove man. And he played with dynamics, eased up, went softer at times, and he's just got a dope personality and stage presence. Everything you need to be a good performer.
I hate people bashing on this ... Drummers are so arrogant.... What he played was very much so technically impressive, he was doing more than just a modified rock beat with fast fills in it that seem to be what modern drumming is rooted in. He was playing Latin beats and infusing them with traditional faster rock based fills... As well as playing traditional (grip style on the stick and flipping his technique back to match grip or german grip) and infusing elements of marching snare rhythms and tricks. So, not only was he technically impressive he added a visual element to it to. Performance is just as much visual as it is technical. So, saying this was boring or not interesting, then you clearly aren't appreciative or as informed of a drummer, because you're not picking up the nuances he added in there that make this impressive.
Benny Greb talks about much like Gavin Harrison that the matter of What you say is all about contrast. Of course the kid has chops. no one gets to the finals without having chops, however conversely he has no contrast. That is the turn off for me. he provides such small amounts of context before showing off the same double kick fill another time. its just not that interesting to me. All flash and such lack of substance
Do you even play drums? Or are you just saying this to make yourself sound like you play drums? Did you hear him mess up like several times? He messed up because he was forcing his rolls to make it sound like he can play witch made him sound like total crap! All he was doing was playing really hard and playing really fast. Ill give him props he does have good tricks but can he play drums? No! So delete your comment please
Roy Cisneros Yeah I play drums ... I went college as a music education major with my main instrument being percussion. Anyhow, of course he can play drums. Clearly it wasn't your cup of tea, but that's absurd to say he can't play drums. His rolls sound just fine and totally don't look or sound forced at all, I have literally zero idea of what you are talking about. No of course it isn't perfect and I think he was clearly making it up as he went along, as most of the people there did I assume so it's not going to be perfect nor do I think a perfect drummer exist. But, he won for a reason so to say he can't play is invariably a stupid comment. That's fine that you don't like it, everyone has there own taste, but to say he can't play is based on nothing completely.
Roy Cisneros Hay Roy, please post a link to one of your solos on TH-cam. It seems that if you are so critical of Isaias solo surely you MUST have many solos that would allow the drumming community to see your expertise, and to be able to see IF you are qualified to pass judgment on any drummer! For all we know you could be a guy who blows into a flute.
Erica Honkonen That's pretty much every GC winner anymore. It's all about speed, flashy chops, and smoke and mirrors bull shit. They have a lot to learn about solid groove. Here are the some of the monsters of groove I have witnessed: Benny Greb, Gavin Harrison, Chad Szeliga, Jojo Mayer, Keith Carlock, Steve Jordan, Bernard Perdie, Stewart Copeland, Dave Weckl, Carter Beauford, just to name a few.
Now THIS is a drum solo. Groove, technique, and it keeps your attention from start to finish. 2013's winner was nowhere NEAR this guy. The Octopad officially RUINED 2013's drum off and all the real drummers will agree.
I swear he just lured me into a love trance...the deep beats course through his soul and out it flows. Thank you Mr. Isaias Gil for the sharing your tremendous gift with the world.
Thanks you Isaias Gil for this amazing solo, i have been listening at this since 2011 till today ! I remember when i showed this to my friend they coudn't understand at the time !!
I came from the future to tell you there is a time after the octopad! don't fret...also note Trump will be president and then will not be president again...buckle up for 2020 especially
I'm so glad my Son hooked up with Isaiah and he's teaching my Son a few new things! I'm so proud of of Kevin! It's very cool he has someone like Isaiah to exchange ideas with, also equipment! LoL
Had the great pleasure of meeting Isaias at a black flag show in flagstaff a few years ago and talked drums for a little bit .dude was humble as all heck and even gave me a free shirt when I told him I didn’t have enough for one. Keep on rocking !
Just saying, the octapad does not add to a solo, nor does is detriment a solo. The fact is that it adds another layer to be thought out, and to incorporate it makes drummers really have to think, and adds a whole other lever of musicality to the ordeal. This was a good solo, but not due to the absence of an octapad.
to me it seems the octapad provides a registration to sustaining the or a rhythm or rhythmic structure of the song & or particular phrase within the song. sort of a bearing so as not to loose track or reiterate with the rhythm. what's cool is if you have noticed it only takes a few notes to remind listeners of the rhythm...ats some cool shit man.. dont ya think
@ Brett Merritt- I couldn't agree more with what you had to say. I'm a guitar player (Advanced), and we all know that guitar players can be some arrogant pricks. But I didn't know that drummers had such a jealous hate fest for other more talented drummers. It's okay to be jealous because it should push and inspire you to be better, but bashing one another isn't the answer. I actually came across a page that said Mike Portnoy was a okay drummer from one of these events and they weren't impressed at all. REALLY??? Not impressed??? Literally take that stick out of your ass and just be the best you can be. Why bash your own brothers? Well said Brett!
Decapitated Playthings I don't think anyone is bashing anyone. From what I can tell, this is a mostly friendly competition. And I have to say, I heard Mike Portnoy's stuff and compared to some of these champions (like Juan Carlos Mendoza), he's aight.
+gokucrazy22 It's not just about what Portnoy did as a drummer (which by the way, listening to anything off of Scenes from a Memory would make you think a bit more), but he's also a killer musician that tailored his music for his crazy drum stuff to fit. It's not just chopping, he plays ridiculous stuff in odd-time, and is an insane musician.
Isaias, love the creativity, technique, employing of different musical genres and styles, one of the finest drum solos i've ever seen in my life. (and I've seen quite a few) Been drumming for 20+ years on two continents and teaching for 12+ years. There's a reason you WON this contest, and it is obvious in this video. :) Keep it up, bro!
This is amazing. I wish I had this sort of inspiration available when I was a teenager in the early 90s when I was learning. Back then it was whatever I could pick up by listening to metal.
The real thing is: Who the fuck are you? "Show me?" you are nobody, he doesn´t have to show you a shit! but he is a great drummer!!! I can´t stand this kind of haters!
BS!! this guy won? man! competition was and is weak! He's good, but his stuff is not innovative by any means and by any stretch! good for him, but I guess this is just straight amateur competitions. This guy is not ready for the top of the line pro stuff. He's good, but again his stuff is not innovative. Those rhythms don't stand out to me. Sometimes I wish I should've entered these competitions, if this guy won, I would've had a good chance, depending also on the judges, but seeing this doesn't intimidate me tbh.

Man does this dude make it sound right. He not only makes it look easy, but he "plays" while hes playing. Super talent and an effortless mastery of the set/audience. Wanna play in our churchband sometime isaih?
Is he "good?" Yes, HOWEVER... he plays like a drum corps kid. I did not hear a single good groove. Everything is either rushing ahead or right on top. No laying back whatsoever, no full pocket. Lots of really GREAT tricks, and unfortunately, not a lot of 'feel' for me. He did pull off some incredible stuff. Gotta give him credit there. I would like to see him get better pocket groove. He's a monster... potentially.

Lol, at 1:56 He plays George George, George of the Jungle!!! I thought I was the only one that jammed to that beat! Awesome drummer, loved watching you groove! Sick!
I agree with you to an extent, and when you're drumming for a competition you almost have to be flashy. But I think we saw a lot of his uniqueness in the heart and soul he put into his playing. He had a smile on his face the whole time and even through a computer monitor, you could feel how happy he was to be performing. Sometimes a drummer's signature isn't in his technique, but in the enthusiasm and energy they put into playing. I see this a lot with Thomas Pridgen.
I love this drum solo. He proved that you dont need a big ass kit to be amazing. He utilized the kit in the most amazing way. He is like the tommy merellow of drumming. He found ways to make cool sounds in interesting ways. He had rhythm and good speed and dexterity. He implemented the speed part at perfect parts and in good ways. He also entertained the audience by and stick tricks and engaging with them. To sum up my review the solo was cool to listen and look at.
I completely agree with everything you just said. It just annoys me so much when people rant and rave about him and it's frustrating that he gets the praise that he does from so many ignorant people.
He used every part of his kit except the underside of the cymbals. Perfect. Even muted the snare with his elbow, which I've done, but not seriously. He used it in a practical way as part of a groove. I've never figured out how to work that into a set. Pretty cool.
The stories always win. Just watched to solos back to back. One didn't have a story. The other one is this winning solo. You felt like he was taking you to different places for 5 minutes. Good job!
there's so many amazing drummers that no one knows about, even if they don't do well in the drum off. I've heard that Aaron Spears competed in the drum off once and lost in the first round. Look where he is now! Crazy stuff.
2:41 been 11 years, and I still keep coming back to this part, because it sounds so damn nice
it took me literally 30 min of brain searching to remember where I heard this groove. Was convinced it was from a Benny Greb video.
You read my mind. 13 years later and I still think about this party every. single. day. 13 years of also trying to learn it 😂
In my opinion one of the best GCDO solo's. Those hi hats sound absolutely incredible.
someone from Sabian needs to identify those hats... 14" AAX Stage Hats??? or are they 15"?
***** They're probably Meinl, since he's an endorser of said brand.
They are Sabian hats (I analyzed the video). I am sure they were a sponsor for this competition.
+LanceCampeau those are Sabian AAX Stage Hats. ;) 14 inch.
I know this comment is old, but they really sound a lot like Zildjian A Customs.
Incredibly encouraging to see a winner in the last 10 years who didn't use the Octapad. Like to think its still possible.

Much love for the NO OCTAPAD!
I don't think those were permitted then, or probably not invented.
+Gavin Christie in 2012 some use it well and gave depth to their performence
Walter Hoffman Arts & Music Studios not really
Walter Hoffman Arts & Music Studios Juan Mendoza’s performance was pretty sick
For real.
My drum solos 1:57
xd
hahahahahahahaha xD
😂😂😂😂😂
That's my snare drum 😬😬😬😬
Bro. I read your comment and knew exactly what part you were talking about!!! Lol. I feel ya. Compared to this solo I'm Fisher Price
Dude this guy killed it! He's got groove man. And he played with dynamics, eased up, went softer at times, and he's just got a dope personality and stage presence. Everything you need to be a good performer.
i would love to drum like this but i can't afford to quit my world wide kazoo tour :(
decisions, decisions...
Damnit
The raw creativity on display here is astounding. This dude pulls so much variety in sound out of the kit

You guys are funny
Lol “the real drummers will agree” 🙄🙄 I’ve been playing drums my entire life and the Octapad is cool as hell. Get over yourself a lil bit.
@@HotStrange The Octopad is definitely cool.
It still ruined the 2013 drum off, specifically. Like, the solos were just... bad.

I was shocked by that.
By what? .. My comment or what he played?
DaDreamEater What he played
***** It's freaking amazing!
DaDreamEater I can agree
The only thing i can do is 1:57 - 2:00 and i'd still have a few mistakes
you mean there was a time before the octopad?
I came from the future to tell you there is a time after the octopad! don't fret...also note Trump will be president and then will not be president again...buckle up for 2020 especially

Sometimes when I read the comments I think all people should know the categories on which the drummers are judged.
Don't tell me tell the people complaining about him being showy.
I can play better than this in my sleep.........then again, I'm dreaming :)

Best solo of GC Drum Offs, IMO
Had the great pleasure of meeting Isaias at a black flag show in flagstaff a few years ago and talked drums for a little bit .dude was humble as all heck and even gave me a free shirt when I told him I didn’t have enough for one. Keep on rocking !
still love watching this one 9 years later. Great solo!
"I'm Mexican, this is a Cumbia!" haha xD that was legitimately funny
Dudes got talent, as in crazy talent.
A good drummer always brings their own snare
Nope
Yup
What if they don't have one
@@bertjamsolina2663 then go buy one
I always come back to this just to see my friend rock the drumming world with this solo. Love ya Isaias
4:44 this is a cumbia!

Ray Romano on drums ladies and gentlemen!
First forty secondes reminded me of Steve Smith. That's awesome.
God bless this young great drummer.I know him and he worked so hard to be where he is at in his drum skills.Absolutely great performance.
Its the best performance from a drum off champion I've seen yet
he looks like filipino donnie darko
+mac cavanah he is mexican, latinos looks like sometimes like philipines cause of the asian migration... ;)
+Roberto Delgado WHAT'S WRONG WITH MEXICANS!!!???
+Roberto Delgado More like the Spanish went to the Phillipines and Mexico

Loool that was what im thinking of dudee
throwback to when you didn't even have an octopad
Yes, kind of simple, but his chops are super groovy! Takes a lot to come up with those.
Creative, technical, passionate and dynamic. This solo never gets old 🔥
style and showmanship reign supreme in him

It is such a shame he doesn't enjoy playing the drums.

I loved it very very much.

That's what made the performance to me :)
Nice performance! Great drum skills and great since of humor.
Nice work kid! Beautiful chops and nice grooves.
His solo and ramon sampson’s are the best. With the octapad
He used every part of his kit except the underside of the cymbals. Perfect. Even muted the snare with his elbow, which I've done, but not seriously. He used it in a practical way as part of a groove. I've never figured out how to work that into a set. Pretty cool.
That is one AMAZING style! :D
Great chop building and rhythm sense!
eccezziunale veramenteeee!!! absolutely awesome
omg, i love this guy. Creative af
its so enjoying when watching but its very hard to do so salute who play drum well😇😇
Superb! U'r the man!
The stories always win. Just watched to solos back to back. One didn't have a story. The other one is this winning solo. You felt like he was taking you to different places for 5 minutes. Good job!
This man rules, nothing more.
there's so many amazing drummers that no one knows about, even if they don't do well in the drum off. I've heard that Aaron Spears competed in the drum off once and lost in the first round. Look where he is now! Crazy stuff.
この人のように楽しく、そしてダイナミックにたたけるようになりたいです!
by far one of the best
