John the legend, and Tosin is a class act.
He talked about getting different sounds from a guitar than just 'guitar sounds', which is an idea I'm particularly keen on (his 8-strings are naturally one reason for that breadth of sounds). He was trying to think of other instruments that you could 'channel' with guitar like he does in his style, to me at times the sounds he's getting are almost Dulcimer-esque, which is of course a wonderful and unique percussive Chinese ethic instrument that you hear so often in their music.
Devin's solo was gnarly too though, that crazy open-C tuning is off the chain...
Wish I had the resources to have a bunch of different guitars all set up to play in such crazy tunings!

It's rare that a musician can use an instrument purely expressively, innately and seemingly without thinking. Devin is one of those musicians. Perhaps not in the same category as Eddie Van Halen, but near that level. His playing feels purely instinctual and is largely about the sound and expression over pure technique. Combined with his other-worldly vocals and song-writing/composing make him a phenomenal musician.

I hope for the same. In some ways, it's strange to see these guys together because in some ways their music, their backgrounds and even the makeup of their fanbases would be quite different. I feel a little bit for Devin (not that he needs my defence in any way!) in that while he's a accomplished guitar, he doesn't come at the instrument as a shred or means of getting his songs across. He was into shred when he was younger (he's told us) but that seems to have very much retreated in the decades since and clearly his strength lies in his incredible voice and his songwriting. I mean, I totally find it fascinating to see Devin with these guys, I just hope it's not 'jarring' or strange for him to be up with these fret-fiddlers. This is so wild... John and Tosin with their crazy techniques and then "Devin you wanna just play something?" And it's this technically super tight thing with so much feel in it, but without any of these crazy techniques. I just love both... but Devin gets the advantage from me, because listening to very technical stuff is actually really involved.

My first teacher in the 90's showed me the technique Petrucci used in his examples. I don't know where he learned it from. When I heard Paradigm shift, I picked it out. But man, the first time I heard Malmsteen, I had no idea a guitar could do that. Later, Vai was a total mystery as well. I was way into Dream Theater late 90's and it was the same. I miss that level of bewilderment.

John and Tobin were demonstrating specific techniques. Had either of them attempted instead to do what Devin did, they could have certainly generated something just as emotionally as engaging. But Devin is a very smart man. He knows that he isn't anywhere near their technical level of skill, so he didn't even risk providing some point of comparison. He just did he is a master at doing.
