    This is fantastic: Two drummers from two generations and totally different musical upbringings. But you can hear that they really listen to each other in this double solo. Each one give the other space to show their chops and each one really listens and reacts to the other one. This should be a pleasure even for non-drummers!

      Simons father (big band leader) was kind of the boss on some time of Gavins father (trompet player)... if i remeber correctly. The roots are not that different. But the musical journeys are different. :-)

      @Ben Riegel open handed is actually a great advantage! A lot of cross stick players are more limited or maybe put it that way: more complicated for them to expand over the kit. I wish I was an opened handed drummer.

    This was so incredible, you see two unbelievable musical masterminds at work. It's intriguing to see them play of each other's playing and not choking or replicating it. Like when Simon was playing his big low boomy Tom's Gavin played in between the notes with his high tuned Tom's and hihat. Simply stunning to watch these to together.

    Yeahhh!!!!! Chester and Phil updated - awesome!!! P.S.: the basic concept sounds like late 70s through 1992 Genesis in 3/4 time sig (or is it?) just with tons of modern ideas and crazy overlayed accents. Would love to see both playing together in a prog rock band.

    Wonderful performance! These guys both play so well, even though they are very different. It's too bad drummers don't get together and play with each other more often. I've done it a few times and it's amazing what comes out. Also, a great opportunity to learn new things. If you liked this, there's a great video on YT of Jojo Mayer and Benny Greb, different from this but just as amazing.

    Here is a clip of Simon Phillips introducing Gavin Harrison at the Modern Drummer Festival in 2008 that explains their connection and similar musical influences. th-cam.com/video/tboVyEIsaIM/w-d-xo.html
    I’ve been a fan of Simon for almost 20 years, so I discovered Gavin through this video and other similar ones. Then I was flabbergasted when I saw him play with Porcupine Tree a few months ago and now I’m hooked to his playing and that band’s music! I hope to see him play live soon.

Just inspirational for other drummers to improve their own ability and texture.!

    Did you know that your area’s local time is being adjusted every 10 minutes on Gavin’s Time? In some countries the clocks are even skipping one hour every time Gavin stops playing. Some conspirators say that back in the 90’s UTC was adjusted upon atomic clocks but this led to a global mess and we immediately turned back on Gavin’s Time. Just some food for thought.

    I really like Simon Philips. With Mike Oldfield, the Who and Toto, really great, but am I the only one who feels that his kit looks REALLY uncomfortable? Toms to big and to high, hihat WAY to low. Cymbals to high up and don't get me started on the trio of floors and that huge whatever it is. I don't think I'd be able to play one decent groove on it. Forget about hitting rims, I'd even hit the kettles.

    • @sjograas
      @sjograas 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you tried playing open handed with your regular hi-hat height? :) Not exactly an ideal playing position! Lowering it down however, feels great. I'd play open handed myself if I just had the patience to either switch to left handed/left footed, but I doubt it will ever happen. I tried playing left footed for about two weeks, inspired by Simon actually, but gave up quite quickly.

    • @69drummerdude
      @69drummerdude 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Johan Sjögren
      Yes I did. REALLY uncomfortable also. And I don't get it as well. I mean, one hand is always going to be better developed then the other. I'm not saying that you shouldn't work on that but what's the point of switching? I have toms and a snare and cymbals over and to the left of my hihat and I don't have a problem getting there. You can practice playing something you already know how to play a different way, but what's the point? The same time would be better spend learning something new.
