I actually saw this movie in theaters at midnight with my brother. The energy in the theater was INSANE. We all screamed, we all laughed to keep each other calm, and during the right parts you could hear a pin drop. The first Paranormal Activity was definitely a cultural reset at the time because of how "realistic" the footage seemed.
Yes! I saw it the first day it came out with my friends and the whole theatre was literally nearly hysterical with fear at the end. I was literally holding hands with some girl I didn’t even know at one point 😂 I’ve never screamed so much in my life. It really was a cultural phenomenon
This! I took my brothers to watch it opening weekend. I was TERRIFIED, the people around us were screaming, hiding behind their hands. I remember mid-way through the movie, people were getting up and walking out of the theater saying they couldn't do it. Good times.

Also, it is pretty funny tbh. I would call it boring too, given how every scare is so predictable.
Also, found footage as a format is more personal and forces the viewer to see things from the characters’ point of view. I’m not saying found footage movies are always necessarily scarier than every other movie, but POV sure is an untraditional way to shoot a movie.

Honestly, the first one is automatically creepier because of the image and sound quality of consumer equipment from the time. It makes it feel more like real home footage. The most disturbing and scariest part is when Katie gets dragged out of the bedroom and taken into the darkness and the fact Micha powerless against the demon is terrifying as shit!

If the demon is attached to her leaving the house won't change them being followed. Why is she still with him when he keeps making it worse? I mean the demon had been following her for years, but it's when this guy is in her life antagonizing the demon that things start getting worse? Also, he's kind of a dick so why is the boyfriend still at the house is the real question.
KC Orphan I completely agree but I’m pretty sure he owns the house? So if they broke up she would be the one to have to leave, not him. That’s why he’s still there. And as for her, you’re right. It’s attached to her and I’m guessing she rather have a toxic boyfriend to “protect her” (emphasis on the quotation marks) than face this terrifying thing alone? Cuz idk if just leaving Micah would let the demon calm down, the Ouiji board already opened the door so I don’t know if it would have settled down and not reached that breaking point.

lmao i watch this movie witha couple of friends on halloween last year and we would only watch 10 mins at a time before pauseing and talking about what we thought would happen beacuase we loved it so much but litterally shat our pants by the end of it. i loved this movie and would definetly recommend it to watch with friends on haloween!!
I remember watching this in a PACKED theater during the midnight premiere of the film on Halloween and it genuinely scared me a lot while watching it there. However it wasn’t scary at all for me when watching it again just because I knew when the jump scares were about to happen. It’s SUCH a fun experience watching it in the theater with a packed crowd. Horror films are the genre that I enjoy a film so much more at the theater and with a big crowd that aren’t acting annoying.
My favourite part is how much Dylan doesn’t stand for toxic relationships

I don't know what would make me freak me out more, if she regained control near the end and screamed for Micah to come save her, or if the demon was mimicking her to mess with him.
The answer to this is actually in the 5th movie Paranormal Activity: The marked ones. So, in the end of the 5th movie, a character named Hector goes through a strange brown door at Katie's and Kristy's (Katie's sister) childhood home(the place from where everything started according to the 3rd movie). So, the door he went through sent him back in time to 2006 (because this movie is set in 2012) to the household of Katie and Micah. Hector enters the living room and sees Katie going downstairs to the kitchen. After unsuccessfully attempting to get her attention, Katie turns around to see Hector and screams for Micah, who assumes Hector is an intruder and tackles him, but Katie violently stabs Micah to death with a kitchen knife. And Hector was also killed by another character from the movie.
So, yeah everything is kind of connected. And that was not Katie calling Micah, it was the demon.

I had the benefit of watching this movie in the theatre at midnight on Halloween. I love horror movies but I was not prepared. The sound of the footsteps and the roar was all around us. Each foot step had the theatre rumbling through your body. I thought it was going to be a cheesy found footage, was I mistaken. I now have a fear of being awake at three am at night because of how that clock would slow down in the movie. No wonder they call it the witching hour XD
I don't like watching horror movies overall but especially because of the time thing. I think it's in The Ring that everything happens around 3:07 am or smth.. God I haven't even seen that movie, someone casually summarize the whole plot for me when I was 14, mentioning the time.. I'm 23 and I'm still relieved when I wake up and it's passed 3:15 am..

i watched a version where you see her coming back in the room and just sit on the floor next to the bed shaking. Than like a day passes and you hear phone ring and then someone enter the house and scream the husbands name. Than some more time passes and the police come and arrest her. That ending was more scary
I feel really stupid now but when Dylan said sign nord vpn I actually got scared thinking it was a demon in the video😂

I love the ice maker scene in this movie because it's so accurate. When I moved out on my own and lived in my first apartment, the ice maker would freak me out ALL the time! You'd think I'd get used to it, but it would get really quiet and all of a sudden I'd be like, "What was that?!" It was the freakin' ice maker every time.

I just want to say that it’s so refreshing to see someone else who finds this type of horror the scariest. All of that tension and build-up is a shit ton scarier to me than a bunch of jump scares or gore. I get so bummed when people complain that “nothing even happens” in these.
Same! These have always been the scariest movies for me. The only other one that isn't find footage type is Hereditary and that one just turns my stomach more than get me scared. I get heavy, so I don't even really like it lol. But this and the third one, along with The Blair Witch Proyect (og one), are * cheff kiss *

Same. Love these movies. The fact that they don't *actually* show anything scary is what always freaks me out. The psychological element is where it's at. Grave Encounters is this kinda style and crazy scary, too.
