@Faebae yeah, that didn't make sense the first time I saw the movie. I was like, anybody would notice that, even more deaf people
missed opportunity to make this movie completely silent. seeing a window break in the background but you and her not hearing it would be freaky and immersive.
As much as that would be innovated, it wouldn’t make a good movie at all. At the end of the day these producers aren’t making these movies to tailer to you and or Dylan specifically, they’re trying to hit the general public, and the general public wouldn’t sit down for over an hour watching a silent film. They played on that “silence” a couple times in the film, but no the whole film.
I think a full movie would be too long, but the series Only Murders in the Building does it in one episode up until the very last moment, and it's very well done if you want to see something like that. :) It was perfect for a 20 minute episode tbh

Catering to the general public is limiting your creativity, obviously you want others to enjoy it, or you know be terrified but, but if you really think that people are capable of making a silent film that is terrifying and enjoyable you have a very limited understanding of films
It's a little frustrating, because when you're Deaf, you can still "feel" banging and yelling. You can feel it vibrating the objects your holding and can feel something is going on. Obviously you wouldn't expect anything and may not notice, but they can feel more than you might think.
That’s what I’ve been thinking, even just having two earbuds in and having music or a video blaring in my ears, I can still feel footsteps through the floor, and even am more aware of my peripheral

There's no way she doesn't feel the friend beating on the door. Same way Dylan feels his neighbors walking. Incredibly unrealistic. She would have felt him banging shit behind her as well.
I like how Dylan was more mind blown by Chris's review of the movie than the actual movie😆.
And I watched a woman that is hearing impaired review this movie and she said it's actually a misconception that deaf people are quiet. They are actuallly very loud becuase they can't really hear how much noise they are making, which made perfect sense.
To be fair, I was also a lot more shocked at Chris' review (and other people saying similar things). I've seen a bad movie before, but never one that is universally hailed as a masterpiece time and again~

there are a bit more infos about the production in the wikipedia article for the movie like "The resulting audio for these scenes could not be used and had to be redone in post, with Flanagan noting that the audio initially "sounded like a herd of elephants." or in the german article it says that Kate had to sync her breath afterwards. thats pretty interesting but i guess the herd of elephants would have been more accurate. xd
Her backstory is that she’s deaf AND mute. She lost her abilities to hear and speak after contracting bacterial meningitis at age 13. The disease caused permanent hearing loss and temporary vocal cord paresis which became permanent after unsuccessful surgery.
@@KayCDani You don't have to use your voice to be loud. I think it's easy to miss because of how natural it is to interact with the environment when you have hearing. Things like putting down the plates or moving objects - they make noise too. A person who can hear will control their strength in a way that makes less noise when doing day to day things. It's not about trying to keep quiet, even for the sake of not being too loud for your own ears, if you accidentally place the plate on the table too strongly you can hear it and when putting the next one down you will probably do it slightly lighter, a person who is deaf has no way of knowing how the things they are doing affect the environment or how much sound they are making when moving around. The difference in strength when interacting with things can be small but the noise difference can still be heard. You can do your best to do things as gently as possible to consciously make less noise but in case u nudge something like a bucket or a chair, you don't know how loud exactly the noise you made was. Even when opening the window, you don't know if your window makes any noise when it opens because you can't hear it. Or at least that's how I understood 'making noise'.
The entire movie I thought the killer was Craig and they’d do something about it in the end but NO the whole Craig loving her thing had NOTHING to do with the plot

I saw this video on his channel when he first posted it, and still agreed with him, and didn’t get why they got so mad at him for not liking it. I saw it again now, and can’t really remember a difference. He also had a video on his other channel explaining his view of it after all the comments, and the points they made are still in this video. And I still don’t agree with those points. It wasn’t scary, they missed the mark, in my opinion. I understood what they were going for, and it would’ve been really good if they managed it, but they just didn’t really do it the right way to really get that feel. Basically, he always makes jokes on his movie commentaries, and he’s never super serious when it comes to the commentary either. Sorry if I don’t make sense or come off wrong, I just had surgery and I’m on a lot of strong painkillers 😂

I understand the perspective the movie was going for, but for me, this movie constantly destroyed that perspective. As he said in the video, KEEP US WITH HER, take away the audio to show how helpless she is. If she doesn't know where the killer is, we don't either. It wanted us to FEEL the tension of her predicament, but it doesn't share how the world looks and sounds like to her. Instead of going with "oh look how clever she is" angle, it would've helped sticking with showing us her fear and just focusing on her coming to grips that she has to face this head-on and be brave enough to face her offender like many real women have to.
I liked that they showed his face cuz it made it more obvious their message, without it being too on the nose, about how women aren't being attacked by mystical hidden beings, there's just guys who are messed up and get a disturbing kick out of it. But to me the film does dip from there. It has its moments like him making sure she sees he's taking away her means of escape. This movie is surface level for not digging deeper into her perspective and forcing us to see things her way. There are other movies where a woman is being attacked and to me personally does a better job portraying this movie's message, WITHOUT meaning to.

Oh my god. I just realized the main woman’s book in the beginning is called “Midnight Mass” which is the Netflix series that came out that she stars in! That’s dope. And her husband (Mike Flanagan) that created the Haunting Hill series and directed this also directs that too which all star her.
Also, if you pause and read the back of the book in the movie, the character’s name is Riley, which is the characters name in the series.

That's one of the most intriguing things about the director!! The hinting at new projects and using the same actors to play different roles (kinda like undertale and deltarune if you follow those games)

First off, I am a guy and I don't have the same perspective as women who do find this movie scary. But like, if you're gonna live out in the woods as a deaf woman all alone far enough away from civilization that running is not an option in an emergency situation, wouldn't you put up some sort of security system? Motion triggered lights, cameras, sensors that detect opening doors and windows, a panic room, anything?? Even just not having so much glass that not only makes home invasions easier but also are just extra points of failure during storms or something? Even just not leaving your door open for hours on end? Nothing to defend yourself in case of an aggressive person or animal? Having a building to keep your car in so it doesn't get broken into or smashed by a tree? Maybe I'm just being paranoid but if I were to live on my own with a disability as big as being deaf on my own without the ability to get help in a fast amount of time I'd turn my house into a mini fortress for any number of possibilities.
I don't understand why being a guy would affect your perspective on it. I mean, I suppose you can argue a guy wouldn't have the same physical disadvantage, but it would still be a murderer with a weapon vs. an unarmed man. The only other man on this movie gets murdered by the killer, so why is this even a gender thing?

Especially because she’s mute as well (I don’t think Dylan’s video included that). She can’t just call 911, she’d have to make someone else call or risk using text to speech and hope the dispatcher takes her seriously.
In my house we have a backup phone upstairs. It’s just a normal flip phone we check maybe twice a year to make sure it still works. It’s only for emergencies where escape or using the downstairs phone isn’t an option.
I’d recommend everyone to have that and some swinging tool near your bed! That and deodorant are great for immediate defence because it creates distance and disorients threats (wild animals included). But yeah she’s completely unequipped to handle even a bear cub wandering in her kitchen.

There is a korean movie about a serial killer trying to kill a deaf women called "Midnight" (so it basically has the same plot as this one). All the flaws you pointed out about this movie, Midnight does right. I really recommend you and everyone else to watch it.

@@nforeversxxx1773 she is deaf or hard of hearing. the movie goes into her POV sometimes and you can't really hear anything besides white noise. also, there are some scenes where the guy is chasing her and she makes noise w/o realizing, so he finds her. her house (and car) is equipped with furnitures/accessories that light up or move when there's movement around them as well.
i think those furniture/accessories are also sensitive to sound. i just know whenever the guy was moving around the house, they would move/light up.
I was just thinking that! Wi Hajoon is one of my fave actors and Jin Kijoo and him does such an amazing job at pretty much everything you said. Even though Dylan probably won’t react to it, if he watched it, I think he’d probably like it, especially when it gets to parts when it goes silent because at that point we are pretty much in the protagonist’s pov. Highly recommend for everyone!

As someone who lives at the base of a mountain, I agree with Dylan on leaving the door open. if you leave the door open you will have every critter in the area coming in.
What I hate is that it took her so long to realize she needed to kill the guy. Idk if it’s because my dad has essentially always told me to do whatever to get away or survive. We’ve had conversations while watching things about how to harm/kill the attacker. I completely agree with Dylan especially when she was on the roof and had the best advantage in terms of seriously harming the guy.
Ugh this is one of my biggest pet peeves in horror movies/shows. When the victim has a clear chance to kill the antagonist and save their life but just.. doesn't. That and when the protagonist won't kill the bad guy because "tHaT mAkEs mE jUst As bAd", like... no, it really doesn't.
@@grurupoo omg exactly!!! So many times when I watch superhero shows I get frustrated when they won’t kill the villain. Like the hero is literally the only person who can defeat the villain because they both have superpowers. On top of that they usually have ample opportunity to kill the villain and save a ton of lives but don’t. And like you said, they’ll say that killing the villain will “make them just as bad” but killing cause you don’t value human life and killing for the greater good of humanity are 2 very different things.
Actually this makes perfect sense that it never occurred to her that she could kill him. Women are told that men are stronger and that we do not have a fighting chance against them. So it’s it at all far fetched that a scared deaf woman living in the woods wouldn’t think of attacking an armed man that is bent on killing her.
i mean if i was in her situation i would try to survive without killing but when she realise that she had too she didn't hesitate anymore

Isn’t it enough to _know_ that’s a reality for perhaps thousands, if not hundred of thousands, of people? Hell, if you’re married, or even just attached to someone, it could be YOUR spouse, or parent, or child, or sibling.
I feel like stories should really shift to showing preferred realities, not the hellscapes we already experience aplenty- and therefore need no more representation than reality itself. We should be adding things to the world that make it better, not more stuff that darkens everything yet further, that lowers the collective energy of the world by bringing it down one more tiny peg. I mean, even if these things aren’t directly happening to us, by watching stuff like this, we’re still filling our lives with the energy…

Dylan was not mocking the idea of the film, he was mocking the execution of it. He was not invalidating the fear women face that something like this could happen, but validating the fact that the director made poor choices in portraying it.

all the criticisms are totally valid. it's still creepy, the concept overall is very unsettling, but it could be so much better. it reminds me of a short story, i can't remember the name of it now, but it was a teen girl who was left home alone by her family that went to a party. these guys came to the door--a thin screen that could easily be broken through. but the whole time this guy, who is obviously not a teen as he claims to be, tries to coax her out. the overall implication is pretty obvious, and even more sinister knowing the friend he came with is ready to burn her house down any moment.
I mean 90% aren't valid its just "well uh why did she not do thing that I pretend I would do?" He literally said "uh the guy is too methodical" Like wtf are you crack? He doesn't seem to be smart enough to understand a single thing.

1. It's his damn opinion.
2. He literally went to school for this and has an invested interest in film making. Meaning, he actually knows a thing or two.
3. He's a COMEDY channel. He's not here to give in depth reviews on anything. Some of the stuff he said wasn't even meant in a serious way but more as a damn joke. If you're too inept to grasp that, maybe you're the one that has to re-evaluate their intelligence.
6:13 that's ridiculous lmao, I have met people who are deaf and I'm just going to say even when they can't hear a thing, they can be accurately aware of their surroundings and something slamming on the door not only makes a sound, but you can feel it, sense it.
As someone who is both deaf and female, this movie is my worst nightmare. The movie isn’t about horror or how interesting the killer is, it’s about the fear that women have from living alone especially women who are disabled. It does a really good job of how male attackers love to toy with women and take amusement in seeing women tormented and terrified. This movie is the only movie where I can fully imagine myself in and be absolutely scared shitless.
Thank you! I absolutely agree. I love Dylan's videos but at the end of the day he kept on seeing it from his male perspective, saying what he would do if he were in that situation, problem is he can't and probably won't ever be in that situation because he is in no ways in a precarious position.

I'm hearing impaired (I wear hearing aids and can barely hear anything without them) and i live by myself. This movie freaking terrifies me for the same reason and it's literally one of my worst fears at night, this happening to me. I thought I would be okay but I noped out SO HARD not that far into it because it was just way too real for me and i could see it happening to myself
The fear isn't "he could be anywhere", the fear is "he could come in at any time, and he is physically stronger and faster, plus able bodied, so he would have a clear advantage if he did". Which is much more realisitc when it comes to real life situasions like home-invasions
both of those could be real fears they should have used both to make it even better

As a woman I really don't understand why everyone is attacking Dylan in the comments. Y'all he is a COMEDY channel. For real. This isn't a critical film commentary. He went to school for film making His critic of this movie is legit. This movie is really only uncomfortable to women, they didn't do a good job making anyone else realize how this situation makes women feel. This film wasn't that great and any legit commentary Dylan made about the film was accurate. I was annoyed watching the movie when they randomly had herself talking to herself in her head, because they didn't weave it into the whole movie. You can't just throw troupes into a movie. It wasn't a great movie and I am a woman, my worst fear is home invasions. But seriously it wasn't good.
I'm an avid film fan, I enjoy horror, thrillers and general creepy films but i'm also highly critical of most movies I watch because they are meant for entertainment. People were paid to write, act and edit this movie and what they ended up with was pretty disappointing.
Y'all need to chill out of Dylan, he is a funny guy and his opinions were all valid even if y'all don't agree and most of what was complained about where just people not being able to take a joke.

Just because someone went to film school doesn’t make their critic legit. His criticisms are surface level at best and sometimes just plain stupid. For example, one of his main criticisms was their choice to show the killer and how it kills the suspense/tension. Which is just straight up wrong. Juxtaposing the hero struggling to get away with the killer getting closer actually creates tension. Also, showing that the killer is just some dude makes the situation more attainable which makes it all the more frightening. This guy has no idea what he is talking about, it’s obvious.

I think knowing where both players are in the movie makes it more of a cat and mouse game. He’s not some paranormal entity of the unknown, he’s a human person who just wants to kill you in a very sick, very real way. Having more of that Spy vs Spy makes it thrilling to me

one of my favorite things is when dylan laughs at his own jokes, it's truly contagious
would've been so cool if this was shot only from the inside of the house; only what she could see from the safety of her home. The camera would always be inside the house even is she manages to get outside. This could play into the theme that even though the guy is lurking outside threatening her the camera itself could be an ominous threat that's also watching her. women, vulnerable people of society, really anyone isn't safe at home
if you think about why he said “I can come in at any time, but I won’t”, he did it because she’s a woman, he doesn’t see her as a physical threat to him, so he disregards her as an easy target and someone you can play with. This killer is an ordinary man, so his only advantage to her is physical. If he went there and saw a man his size alone, he would probably kill him fast to avoid physical altercation because he wouldn’t have any advantages.
That's exactly what he did with the only other male character in the movie. Stabbed him while he was distracted.

thing is, i get that the tension is broken by showing the killer so much. but the director of this film developed the movie to become more of a “realistic” home invasion movie. that’s why they showed he’s just some dude, and that’s why they show him in the process of what he wants to do because he’s no Michael vorhees who can literally teleport, and has no other motivation other than: kill

The only intent he had *was* to kill her but he wanted to make it as fun as he possibly could before he finally did. Some killers enjoy the thrill of the chase and hunting someone down. He's meant to be one of them.

I almost completely agree with the points from a directorial aspect he said. Once again he isn’t bashing the plot of this movie, I myself think the premise itself is good. But the way some things are shot and something’s that jus weren’t shot or used such as the ideas Dylan gave I think good have really amplified this movie and put the suspense and thrill to the next level and have you always on the edge of your seat. I honestly hope someone sees this video or some video like it that has these recommendations on how to improve something for this type of film and uses it.
I feel like this movie is more horrifying to women because as a woman who has lived completely alone, it really is terrifying sometimes. You look behind you when walking outside in a parking lot, you jump when someone knocks at your door late at night, every noise feels threatening when you’re on edge. It’s horrifying to know that if someone broke into your house and wanted to hurt you, they could overpower you and do whatever they wanted to you easily.
Let's stop labeling this as a "woman's movie" or something that is only understandable to women. We often play up, to dangerous extents, the fear of a woman. A normal woman should not, and does not, live in fear every day. That's not normal, and acting like it is normal isn't going to change anything. I dislike the notion that women are afraid of everything, because they're not. Constantly portraying this idea just tells MORE women to be scared of living. I get that in some places, like high-density cities, are more dangerous for women statistically and logically, but that's not the same as saying every woman is and should be afraid for her life.Being terrified everyday is not going to get rid of world violence, and living in fear is not the experience of every woman. However, what CAN be universally experienced is the inability to hear. We all know what that is like, and if not, we can easily find out. This movie is terrifying to most (idk what's going on with dylan) not because the character is a woman, but because she is at a clear disadvantage as a deaf person. It is a discredit to the movie to say it can only be experienced by only one type of individual, or that it was *made* for a type of individual, or that others just "don't get it" because they don't check off every box that the main character has. You can always argue for the intelligence of a movie without falling into representation trap arguments. Those type of arguments are inarguable, which renders the point null anyway.

All I see is people saying why this movie would be scary, most of them seem to be women, which is why they're saying why it was scary for them. This should tell you that that specific woman has felt that fear and that the thousand people who liked that comment have also felt it. Plus the main character is a woman with all of those disadvantages, including being less strong and less fast, which is just a fact in most cases, so it makes you feel scared for the woman in that movie, which it would also be males saying that. No one is saying that every woman is scared or should be scared in their house alone or that nowhere is safe. It is just applicable to this situation where a woman is home alone, is weaker, can't hear and is being chased by a male murderer. And no one said the movie can only be watched by women because others wouldn't understand. If anything, anyone should watch movie's like this for the purpose of understanding that specific fear. Which, again, doesn't apply to every woman, just a lot of them.

When I first saw the movie I barely found anything to dislike. However thinking about it after it ended, the two things that Dylan also mentioned got me off guard. Firstly, the movie should've had been more silent like from a deaf person's perspective. They didn't give enough importance to her deafness. It was neglected a lot. Also, it would've been more interesting and realistic if she would make sound unknowingly. Since she's deaf and never been into a situation like this, it would've been intense to see her unaware of herself being loud enough in particular scenes (it's not making any sense I'm afraid but anyways lol😂). Secondly, the killer had actually a lot of screentime. I swear I didn't like him appearing every single time when Maddie had to plan something and execute it. Besides, him getting unmasked too early or actually just getting unmasked made me feel a loose interest. Actually there's whole lot to talk about after I finished this reaction but let's just leave it here.
I loved this reaction and agree to it all the way. Apart from some jokes that I didn't like (lol) Dylan pointed out mistakes amazingly.

I found this movie quite tense and anxiety inducing. Him toying with her, having that power over her with size difference, location, etc and then you add her being deaf on top of it makes for a scary set up and killer imo. Like he just seems like such a sick person toying with her and yeah the whole home invasion part in general scary too. However, I do agree there are missed opportunities to utilize her deafness to add tension and fear to a scene. It's not the same situation but I think the A Quiet Place films did a good job using deafness to set up tension and fear

@@kalechips322 There were a bunch and I watched the movie a while ago, but some examples I can remember at the top of my head (spoilers ahead):
1) at a certain point they show printed newspapers talking about the invasion of the creatures (who are very sensitive to sound)... how did they print the newspapers without making noise? Or did they print them risking to be killed when they can just use the web?
2) in such a dangerous world, when the family walks back to their house, they have the very young kid at the end of the line, walking behind the parents - every girl scout (and common sense people really) knows weaker people should go in the middle - especially if the kid doesn't seem to fully understand that making noise means death.
3) it's never really defined how well these creatures can hear. In some scenes they can hear a toy from halfway around the forest, in some other scenes a mattress over a hole muffles sounds people are making enough to be safe from the creatures...
4) connected to 3, no one in this family farted, sneezed or talked in their sleep? (they don't talk in the house, so it's not a safe place where they can make noise)
5) at a certain point it is shown that creatures can't hear humans near waterfalls cos the noise of water covers voices. It's never explained why the family doesn't live near the waterfall. Even considering construction noises, the family had time to create an elaborate fence and traps around their house, so they could have used that time to build some shelter near the waterfall.
etc. etc... there's whole Reddit threads about the plot holes!

@@xladycaosx Yeah I do think the waterfall one is a bit tricky. You could argue that they had no way of collecting and bringing materials there quietly, but then they somehow managed to build additional things around their house. The waterfall would’ve also been a much better place to give birth at. I can definitely see some inconsistencies with the monsters hearing abilities as well, but naturally it’s harder to clear up these discrepancies without any dialogue. I think it’s a very well done movie overall, and the plot holes aren’t nearly as noticeable as a lot of other films. I think the movie intentionally left a lot of these open for the audience to try and fill, and most of the inconsistencies are small and don’t really impede on the actual plot. The farting and sneezing thing tho… there must have been a lot of deaths from that lmao
personally, i’m glad they didn’t give the killer some stupid back story in an attempt to make you feel bad for him. they did that in the rob zombie halloween remakes and it annoyed me to no end. he’s killing because he gets some kind of sick enjoyment from it. he all but says this himself. this is a portrayal of a very real fear for most women. you’re home alone, defenseless, nowhere to run, and a man is trying to get into your home to murder you.
Movies usually don't give killers back stories to feel bad . Thats like a psychologist saying they don't need to hear the history to diagnose. You can have empathy for someone and say they're in the wrong. Its not black and white. Many real serial killers have the same back story for a reason. Understanding isn't taking a side, its simply knowledge and insight. To ignore a back story is to ignore cause and effect. You should know how the road was paved
@@moxiemaxie3543 not every movie needs to give a backstory to a murderer. Go on Netflix, there’s plenty. Is there something wrong with focusing on terror the victim would be feeling? Yeah, a lot of murderers backstories are fucked up, so are a lot of peoples. And some murderers just want to kill and enjoy it without having any major trauma. This is a movie about a deaf woman trying to escape from being murdered alone in the woods, not a movie about the killer. I would even argue that it would throw off the tone of the movie by having flashbacks to him being abused, or whatever trauma, as it’s not about him and why he’s doing this, it’s about her and how she’s going to stay alive and get out. His background doesn’t matter much when it’s HER life on the line, and it doesn’t further the plot in the direction why were aiming for. Like the original comment said, this is more of a portrayal of what some women, most women, would fear. You wouldn’t know who’s trying to kill you, or what happened in their childhood to bring them to this. You just want to stay alive and get out. You don’t need to understand the killer for that.

Same. Some people are just like that. For me, they're way more scary when they just do it because they "want" to. Nothing more, nothing less. I will never understand why killers with backstories can be "good" characters. I guess it also depends on how well written that character is, though. And to be fair, there are some killer/antagonists with cool and mind blowing storylines. Just not with this one. I'm glad he's just a psycho.
I think her being like "I have to kill him" isn't meant to be some crazy idea to the audience but rather like, she realizes tat she has to kill someone. I imagine in real situations that holds a lot more weight than most movies portray, and this movie chose to show that realer side of things. I think it's more relatable than someone just goin and killin with no feelings about it, especially when she does have time to think about it
Okay, I’m a woman so I understand the fear of a stranger coming and I think I would genuinely be scared if I watched this, BUT quite a few things he said in the video could make the movie even better. For example when he said that they could’ve played into her deafness more it would’ve made it more terrifying and help us understand what she’s experiencing better. A quiet place does that very well, utilizing the silence. While some of the jokes he made were obviously dumb decisions if she had made them, some technical aspects he talked about could’ve made it that much better. I said this on his Ooga Booga channel too, but I watch Dylan bc he’s funny and talks abt the production of films more, not many other commentary channels do, and I love that he does.

I watch quite a fair bit of horror so they don’t really phase me. But when I saw this movie for the first time, it terrified me. As a woman living alone, the idea of knowing such danger is so close yet you remain so helpless gave me chills. My goodness, the torment he put her through. It stayed with me for many days after which is unusual as I’m the type of person to laugh through horror.

every night when a i hear a noise somewhere in my house, all those different stories, real and fictional, about people breaking in random places just to kill for no real reason plays through my head. its hard out here for a woman living alone

That what I'm thinking too, no offence but Dylan is a man. The power dynamic and the psychological torture the protagonist is facing is realistic that is why it is scary not the jump scares. It have to be seen through a woman point of view.
For sure and I really liked the approach it took of showing us where the killer is at all times because it makes you be involved with the writer character so much to the extend that you are theorising constantly about what you would try to do in the same situation
Honestly for me is that when he takes the mask off, it isn't a ''killer'' movie anymore, it's a battle of wits. I never really considered this a horror movie, but what I liked about it was seeing how the lady tries to outwit the dude and how the dude adapts to it.
A lot of the time the way you approach a movie has an impact on how you feel about it, now for me, the person who showed me didn't say it was a horror movie, just suspense. Not saying I disagree with all the criticism, it relies a lot on loud jumpscare noises when i think it'd be a better movie without it. Also not saying it's a great movie, but I'd describe it as a ''fun thriller/suspense''.
I've rewatched this movie many times and it wasnt until Dylan mentioned the phone that I realized a huge plot hole;
Craig takes the phone so that she cant phone or message anyone for help, because he can just double message and be like "lol false alarm" - she has a MacBook and an iPhone, she can lock her phone using Find My iPhone on the MacBook as if it was stolen and make it more or less useless?
i also agree with the sound free approach, i feel like had this been made after Bird Box or A Quiet Place it absolutely would have played with the sound aspect, but in 2016 i think playing with something like this would have hurt it.

17:40 she’s deaf- she doesn’t normally have to think about the volume of her breathing. She’s panicked and the natural response for the human body is for the heart rate and breathing to quicken. But she’s smart, she realizes then covers her mouth.
I really enjoy your commentary and input- but I think in some moments, you’re very critical of the film. In instances where you’re critiquing the movie, maybe try to keep a balance- think why the directors did what they did as well as how you think it can be improved. The movie is more of a home invasion rather than a textbook horror. It’s essentially following her as she tries to outsmart the killer. It’s an issue of survival. Maybe I am wrong in saying this, but I feel women understand the fear in this situation more. The killer is preying on her being deaf, and being alone. He takes off his mask to prove that he doesn’t care that she saw his face. Everything he does is to play with her. Basically a predator playing with its food.
I agree. As a woman, I was terrified when watching this movie. The fact that they showed the killer made him more realistic and terrifying because this can happen to anyone. I constantly would think about what I would do in her situation.

For most movies, I agree that seeing the killer takes away the tension and the fear. But for Hush, knowing their locations sometimes plays with the tension. Having his whereabouts be unknown works in some parts of the movie, but it's also intended to be a case of Maddie figuring out where he is and outsmarting him. So, knowing his location is kind of necessary.
I think it scares you to in a way? Because the Killer revealing his face means that he means business and would probably plan to kill the main character. So I guess there’s this tension of the killer meaning business and that we might not fully know if MC survives or not
@@angxlpeach - Yes, for sure, though I would say I rarely ever think every protag dies in a horror movie, because the whole point is for them to survive.
I really like this movie, watched it a few times now. While I disagree with Dylan on some things, I do understand his criticisms too. There were other ways the movie could have played with the character being deaf, and once you've seen the movie, you know where the "horror stings" are, so the tension doesn't come through on replay value. I would say this just isn't his style of horror, though I think there is a distinction between horror and thriller.

I just try to understand that Mike Flanagan was sort of new here (I think he only had Oculus as his only feature film at this point?) so he was still taking baby steps into horror. I can see how the unknown can be really scary but maybe it’s just because I’m a woman but the idea of knowing the confidence of seeing a man show his face when you know that when they do that they’re not planning on taking survivors it’s mortifying. The unknown tactic can be a bit tacky and too easily make the un aliver seem supernatural esk but seeing them and building up that dramatic irony and true villainous knowing that you’d be overpowered is the scariest part of this movie at all for me… that cat and mouse and just trying to outsmart him is the worst fate of all

This is actually one of the reasons why I liked this movie because this is where it diverges from the other horror/thriller/slasher films
As a 6ft man on the heavier side I can confirm. That’d I’d be crying like a little bitch if a dude with a crossbow was toying with me by showing his face after I tell him I didn’t see anything.
i love how dylan acts like terror is never a factor in these movies and that he would be able to remain totally logical and get out of any situation when thats only because he can see the solution as a third party viewer that has more time to think and is not faced with the terror of actually being in this situation... that was a long sentence.
I was honestly expecting a huge twist at the end that no one expected because I was also confused how it was 93%
I enjoyed this movie, but hearing Dylan's criticisms for it made me think, "Oh yeah, that's true." Anyway, if he hasn't already done so, I'd want to see his reaction to Don't Breathe.

actually it’s really scary - to know who the killer is, to see his face, especially to know where he is, because you know what he can do to you. there’s nothing scarier than realizing one simple fact: he’s stronger than you and there’s not much you can do to defend yourself.

Yes that CAN be scary. But that also means you can make a plan to defend yourself or escape. But when you don’t know you can’t do that without a 100% guarantee of escape or defense.

For me, the mask coming off was one of the best parts of the movie. She was trying to bargain and reason with him, avoid the confrontation altogether - go away and you won't get in trouble.
His response being to get rid of that bargaining chip because he's so confident that she's going to die that it's completely irrelevant? Gobsmacked me.
My dad made me watch this movie because he swore it was the best horror movie ever! I thought it was okay but nothing great…And like you said, they showed the killer and it took away the suspense for at least for me. I don’t get the 93% rating on rotten tomatoes either 🤔
I think it would have been better if they took a long time to show him and actively terrorize her. Just have him mess around with the main character and make her slowly question what is happening in her house and why things are moving or missing.
They could have even skipped showing the friend dying, and maybe just have blood on the glass door for the audience to see and reveal her death at the end or once the killer takes an active role in killing the main character.
I think that the focus on violation of privacy and property in the bigger chunk of the movie would have helped to be actually scared of the killer.
Apparently they showed his face to show that men who abuse and attack women aren’t are everyday men. Not just weird creeps lurking behind the shadows. So I get the meaning of it all, but I would have preferred if they had done that later in the movie.

This isn’t supposed to be a horror movie, it’s a thriller. It’s a battle between two opposing forces who turn out to be of almost equal strength although you would expect, as she said, that he would have all the advantage. Yes he could have been made scarier in certain ways, but it’s an exploration of the power dynamic between two human beings, not one human and one shadowy, mysterious, omnipotent and omniscient horror villain.
Yeah i think this is more comparable to panic room than a horror movie like halloween.

For this movie I don’t think the “unknown” was supposed to be what was scary, what’s scary is being a woman and there’s a stalker outside your house trying to kill you
I think the shots where she sees where he is are meant to be here, it’s a matter of who’s smarter here in this “game”and it’s not about a weak woman hiding to survive but about HER strategy ~with the different possibilities~to get out of here and even kill him if she has the opportunity so that’s why we see where he is
This movie definitely hits different as a woman, yeah. The state of panic and fear that happens during situations where someone is bigger, stronger and faster than you, and is willingly toying with you to keep you in that state is extremely stressful and is more than enough in the thriller aspect. I think it keeps showing him bc it's not trying to be a 'oh where is he' thriller, it's 100% a battle between them. He believes he's smarter, he has more than a few kills under his belt to give him that cockiness so of course he's going to see her deafness as an opportunity to have fun and it shows the little war they have between the scenes. Dylan's used to reviewing thrillers where they keep the killers hidden bc usually those movies are just for the scares and thrills. But this one is more psychological.
You wouldn't see her coming up with those strategies from the beginning either bc she thought she had time. She wasn't in that severe state yet where her fight or flight would take over - think about it, her friend at the start ends up dead but she doesn't witness that. The guy telling her to run, she see's it happen right in front of her and it's her fault for making the noise to distract him from getting the jump on the killer. So then she see's a bigger guy get taken down by this killer - the bigger guy who could have been her way out. That's CRUSHING and disheartening as fuck. Her senses would definitely elevate then, bc yeah she lacks hearing but being down one sense usually means the others are stronger, especially in a hyper-alert situation where she's well aware he's now IN the house and she's made the resolve to kill him.
I think some folks answer is usually 'just kill him back.' but that's not your first thought. The standard person wants to AVOID killing. It's the last resort when it comes to survival, especially against someone who's more adept at it than you. She can't run, she can't hide, she can't wait for someone to save her - all those scenarios were played out during the movie. She HAD to play out that vision of her right then because she was out of options and it was a literal 'I definitely can't find another way out of this'. But by the end you see that blank look because she DID kill him in the end and she survived but what was the cost of it all? Sure she's alive but she's lost her friend, her home isn't safe anymore, she's probably got guilt from being a part of why the other neighbour died too. That blank, traumatised stare is the stare of someone who had to do something and live through something she didn't want to.
as a girlboss™ myself, even with your girlboss™ interpretation of it being about her strategy, the movie just isn't scary. it's an inherently scary situation of course, but the movie doesn't seem to know how to build tension. like dylan said, it would''ve been so much more terrifying to see less of the killer, and to have him not speak, so that you could truly sink in to the mindset of this deaf woman trying to figure out where he is and protect herself. And that way, you could also have more scenes of just her making up those strategies and focus on her wit at such a scary situation

The friend's boyfriend's death was actually scary to see because physically, he is already bigger and looked stronger than the antagonist. Not to mention he has a perfect sense of hearing and yet he still died.
It kind'a annoyed me that he dismissed the epipany of finally deciding to kill? Because as a sane person, it will never be your initial intention to kill anyone. Disarm or maybe hurt them (at most) just so they can't get to you? Sure. But even at the beginning, we're already shown that she wanted this to end peacefully with no violence seeing that she's willing to not call the cops so he could leave her alone.
Seeing both the cat and the mouse makes perfect sense though I feel like. Because when we see the invader, we're given the thrill of "what's he gonna do to her now? he's catching up to her how is she going to defend herself" etc
Anyway, basically, I think Dylan's only able to say the things he said because he's a guy. He's less likely to be attacked by an invader or (I hope not I swear) if ever that he did, he has the full capacity and strength to defend himself unlike the movie's main character.

Like, I get it, you're a dude, you've never been terrified of men, but in this movie it's so obvious? She's a woman, she's alone in the frickin woods and on top of that she's deaf!
I think the movie could tap into her POV better. Make men understand what that fear is. Make us all deaf. Develop the tension. Create even more terrifying scenarios for us to see. Dylan's criticism is on point.
I mean this just kinda highlighted for me that men don't naturally empathise with women's stories the way women are conditioned to empathise with male stories. To male viewers of the film he's "just a guy" showing that you don't really see the threat that women feel towards men. This is why women's stories need to be told so men understand that real "normal" un-supernatural men are more often than not the perpetrators in our real life horror stories

On a personal note, I had a stalker years ago and watching this movie gave me chills. It took me back to a terrifying time in my life where I was scared to alone, especially alone at home where he might be able to corner me and hurt me.

I found this film really brilliant just because (in my opinion) the lead character made some really good judgement calls...I'm used to characters in horror films doing the most ridiculously stupid stuff to the point that it's unrelatable. I found myself putting myself in her shoes throughout this film to work out how I'd react in her position because she was making decisions that I might make if I were scared and alone. That's why I like it a lot compared to a lot of other films like this. I found it super engaging. That being said, I feel like a lot of Dylan's criticisms were accurate, for example, showing us the location of the killer killing some of the tension.

She has a hammer in her hand, a clear shot at him, and decides to hit his arm instead of his head. But that can be forgiven, she was doing a 180 without looking at what she was aiming.
How about when in the bathtub scene, she stabs him in the leg, then runs away, instead of aiming higher, and stabbing him in the chest. But that’s not so bad right?
Oh yeah, that one time when she has an arrow in her hand, and the bad guy is preoccupied climbing. What does she do? Pushes him off the roof. Instead of…you know… *stabbing him in the face.*
And I’m not even going into the fact that she’s a deaf, unathletic, untrained woman living alone in the woods, but 1) she hasn’t installed security and alarms and stuff. And 2) she leaves the fucking door open for hours on end.

The idea of being stalked/the themes in general are horrific when you place them in a real life setting, but they just seemed to execute it really badly imo

The thought of being alone in the woods with a psychopath trying to kill me, but making it known he's going to torture me first, is enough to scare anyone. But now I'm deaf? Holy shit. Pretty sure after rewatching he noticed the breath lol. He was right about the guy just magically showing up behind her tho. That made absolutely no sense. Tbh I agreed with everything he said, I love thriller horror movies and this one just ain't it. Critics usually get things backwards from my opinion tho. Then again I'm usually the opposite from everyone anyway 🙃
@@elizabethhayes9626 He didn't show the clip in the video (HM! convenient!) so I'm guessing he didn't notice it (like a lot of other things) but there's literally a window above the bathtub that the viewers can see as she hobbles in, and then when all the noise disappears and we get a zoom in of her face, you can see broken pieces of glass falling into the tub behind her. So... it's not "magical", the movie is pretty straightforward about how he broke the window and climbed in... and then how he breathed on her neck when talking and she felt it. Like.. he literally didn't pay attention to so so many things in the movie and then bitched about the movie lacking things... that the movie showed him but he missed.

The fact that right in the beginning of the movie Dylan predicted the end of the movie says a lot
I like that they didn't make her friend approaching the house as a jumpscare. You could really feel the helplessness of her situation.
you could actually achieve both a jumpscare and the helplessness, using the technique Dylan suggested.

I agree with everything you said - also, the 'silent mode' idea is brilliant - imagine if they did the whole movie completely silent from her point of view, that would have been 2000x scarier.

I was so angry when I finished this movie because I wasted almost two hours, hoping it would get better. Never mind it wasn’t scary but the story had so many holes..I really don’t understand what people liked about the movie

It’s mostly the premise and what the movie was trying to say about gender and disability. That’s all well and good but it just wasn’t executed greatly and was just a generic horror film with a genuinely interesting premise.
