I can’t help to think of Cecelia Blomdahl and Christoffer when I think of Svalbard Longyearbyen. They are one of my favorite You Tubers. I watch them religiously ❤
I worked at the airport in Svalbard for two months - it was a super fun experience living in Svalbard. It is a special place with lots of history and interesting knicks and knacks. This video was a fun throwback 🫶🏼
@@DarknessIsThePath It's an interesting place, and also very small. I was there in October and November, just when it was about to go dark-dark. There's no sunlight during the winter months, and there's no darkness during the summer months. It gets pretty dang cold when the wind hits you (and I say this as a Norwegian). Most people wear full-body wool underwear, and warm clothing over, to keep from freezing. Thick wool socks, propper gloves and a warm beanie does the trick. In other woords; you have to dress in layers. You always have to keep in your mind that there's a chance (although small) that you can meet polar bears. And if you venture outside of the city centre without a car, you have to (by law) bring either a flare gun or a gun/rifle with you.
@DarknessIsThePath For sure you should give it a visit 😊 It's an expensive place though, but some people welcome couchsurfers to crash on their couch, and there's a camping close to the airport (but be warned, a man sleeping in his tent was killed by a polar bear a few years ago). You can also see if you can get a seasonal job while you're there, to get a bit of a more local experience (recommended) 😀

A year after watching this vid ,my wife and myself did the trip ,travelling from the UK .Stayed 3 nights in the Radisson Blue .Absolutely loved it , 4 days of being in darkness and after 2 cloudy nights saw the Northern Lights on 3rd night . We loved it there ,will go back there in Spring/Summer .
You may want to go during the warmer months. Like June, july, and August. But you will need to book accomodations in advance. I bet the hotels and other rooms fill up quickly in the summer.

love the travel day vlog bits! also this video warmed my heart and gave me hope to hold onto on these cold and dull days. it’s not the daylight that makes somewhere cosy, it’s the whole vibe i guess. keep more wintery travel videos coming
Wonderful to see this again. I went there in 2018 and stayed in the same hotel. The rooms, bar and breakfast room look the same, but the reception looks like it has been refurbished. The buildings were actually built for the Lillehammer Winter olympics in 1994 and moved here to make this hotel after the games. I was quite surprised when I stayed there that if you book a room in the suites (I didn't) they were actually in a separate building opposite so you had to go outside to get to the hotel facilities which I thought was odd. Your journey seemed convoluted. When I did it you could do it both ways in a day which is what I did. I did Heathrow to Oslo then Oslo to Longyearbyen (both on SAS) and the same in reverse. Like on your trip the flight stopped in Tromso on the way too. The reason for this is Svalbard is actually outside Schengen (in fact I think technically there is no immigration there at all and anyone can go there without even a passport, if you can find a way to get there). Hence you have to go through customs at Tromso to leave Norway again I believe. As to the no gun sign in the shop, in Svalbard it is a legal requirement to have a gun with you (and various other equipment such as a locator beacon) if you go outside of the towns or at least one person in your party has to (hence tour guides will have a gun if you go on any tours). Hence most residents have guns. The Radisson Blu there used to have a gone cabinet near the shoe racks for that reason, not sure if it still does. The town looks much as I remember it but not sure if that big CoOp was there. I went in the summer, so had 24 hour daylight, but the snow was still on the tops of the mountains there. I shall be interested in seeing if you go on any excursions. I took a trip to Ny Alesund. I think this is actually the most northerly town in the world and it's where most expeditions to the North Pole set off from. There is a statue of Roald Amundsen there, who set off from there, as well a shop. Though it's mostly a research town. I had to go there by boat (it's about 3 hours each way I seem to remember) because there are no roads, but I think the sea ice would make it impossible in the winter. Also went Barentsburg and on a walking trip (but that is a Russian settlement, so it may not be possible now) and up to the mountains behind Longyearbyen (even in the summer, crampons and snow shoes required). Didn't see any polar bears though but did see the reindeer wandering in the town as you did , as well as Walruses. I would love to go back and hope to do so.l I had an amazing time there, it is quite literally like nowhere else on earth. Also the tour guide to Ny Alesund was excellent and very friendly so learnt a lot from her. Thank you so much for sharing this. It is wonderful to see it there again and to see what it is like in winter!
What a majestic place! The Main Street there with all the businesses is so beautiful. Thinking of taking my dad somewhere like this as he’s getting older and we’ve always enjoyed doing guy trips to places. He loves places like Norway, Sweden, Iceland and all those countries. This seems like a solid option!
You can aslo go from Heathrow to Tromso with 1 stop in Oslo in 5.5 hours or with 1 stop in Helsinko in just under 6 hours... Going to Stockholm to go to Oslo is just crazy
That first hotel room is a very standard American hotel room, like you would see in any of the chain hotels. The decor is a little different in each, but the shape, furniture, lighting is all pretty much the same.

I know this was filmed nearly a year ago, but you did ask about the Radisson Blu and we have plenty in the U.S. and, apart from the heated bathroom floor - which I’d appreciate in Minneapolis as well - and that most rooms have coffee makers rather than kettles and tea, it’s basically identical. :)
I recommend you visit the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. It is a beautiful hotel and a favorite of my family. I recommend a suite with an atrium view room.
I stayed there in end of November 23, booked a standard room (same like yours) but upon check in the hotel upgraded me to superior room. A few minor changes from the standard room..It got nespreso coffee machine and the toilet definitely better. Newly renovated with modern and neat style. Breakfast was amazing and I hope you tried the outdoor hot tub.
I’m amazed at how nice this town is. Nice looking and well-stocked grocery store, nice restaurants, nice shops. It’s very clean. This is the polar opposite of what you see in Alaska, where it looks grimy.
Thanks for showing this, I sell trips to Svalbard & they stay at the Radisson Blu hotel, for the summer time though, good to see how it is and in wintertime !
I think there are easier ways to get there than the route Tim took. I went London Heathrow to Oslo, then Oslo to Longyearbyen (though like for Tim the flight stopped in Tromso). Quite possible in a day, I think it was about 6 or 7 hours end to end.
13:00 He's talking about how cozy the hotel room is and how it's the "Swedish/Norwegian" model of lightning with lamps. Dude that looks like any Radisson room I've ever stayed, or indeed any American style 3 star hotel. They always have an armchair, always a desk, same bed and tv layout and yes, lamps.
Looks like an amazing trip, Tim. Great hotel as well. This has to be on my bucket list. I don’t think £146 per night is bad with breakfast and jacuzzi etc especially where it is!
Hi Tim! I’ve been watching you for almost a year now, and I can honestly say I always look forward to new Tim video! Your editing is so good, and videos are really fun to watch and so informative so thank you. Merry Christmas! 🎉

You are fantastic and really transforming the average person toward feeling as if they are right there with you!! Keep up the fantastic work (hope you, Gaby, Thumps, and all feeling better & 100% for Christmas!!)
One thing you didn't mention, there is no tax on beer in Spitsbergen so beer is around the same price as the UK. We went there around 0 years ago, from Southampton on the QE2. We ended up at the hotel you stayed in. It's a wonderful place. Thanks for the video, cant wait for the next one.
In one of Jo Nesbø's books, the main character flees to the northern most town in mainland Europe. It's called Skarsvåg. From the town, you can get to Nordkapp, a spit of land north of the town.
This video popped up on my suggestions, so I watched and I must say, I truly liked it. You're very informative, always good to learn new things and I love to learn about travel and different ways around the world and places. Your speaking voice is calm and good, keeps you listening. I will subscribe to your channel now. Oh and...It looked like the lady at 12:08 had shoes on!! Lol
Excellent video! This is fascinating. I've heard of "polar routes" or the "great circle route" for flights but I have never thought about actually flying close enough to the North Pole and something as every day as hotels there. Happy, safe travels and Happy Holidays!🥂
Good to see what's changed since I was doing a bit of work there over 15 years ago. The bedrooms have at the Radisson have had a serious upgrade! They were very utilitarian back when I was there. The pub/restaurant in the hotel seems much the same. Up the valley on the other side of town is a sort of town hall that had a serious night club going on inside, but also a tiny restaurant called Huset with the most amazing wine list at astonishingly reasonable prices.
Thank you for explaining why that stuffed polar bear was killed and what the animal welfare laws were regarding that. I’m just glad he won’t suffer from his illness anymore!! Also, I love that you saw a reindeer!!!! He’s so cute!!!
Wow never seen a vlog of the most northern hotel in the world I had to Google about polar bears I cannot believe the size of them I'm just saying that reindeer casually going about it's business it was amazing thank you Tim

And Norwegians still buy water even though we have places all over the country where you refill your bottle with fresh filtered water go figure.

Great video Tim. Thanks for taking the time to share some information on the place, makes it more interesting 👌🏻
I’m amazed at how nice this town is. Nice looking and well-stocked grocery store, nice restaurants, nice shops. It’s very clean. This is the polar opposite of what you see in Alaska, where it looks grimy.
Hats off to the pilot, for landing that plane like a boss 👏 🙌 👍🏼 😎
To fly I'm the ar
To fly or sail in the northern part of the world you have the best/special experiences 😊 All for safety
WOW! Looks comfortable and fascinating-hot tub, sauna, plush linen, breakfast, and all!
Amazing. Very interesting. Thanks! Love the polar bear at the breakfast! He looks like he’s been there all night and is hung over….😂😂😂
Great video Tim. Im embarrassed as a Norwegian not to have been at Svalbard.
Its really really nice there
Hi Tim. I love the cosy feel of the room and the reception area.
Thanks for showing this, I sell trips to Svalbard & they stay at the Radisson Blu hotel, for the summer time though, good to see how it is and in wintertime !
Tromsø is a amazing city
Seeing that fish ready to eat at the airport makes me happy
150 quid for the room, breakfast, hot tub and sauna? That's hugely reasonable. Getting there looks a bit daunting but definitely worth it.
I think there are easier ways to get there than the route Tim took. I went London Heathrow to Oslo, then Oslo to Longyearbyen (though like for Tim the flight stopped in Tromso). Quite possible in a day, I think it was about 6 or 7 hours end to end.
Hotels cost more than £150 on Svalbard especially in Radisson blu
Trust me I know this as I holiday there every year
@@tshelby5212no they don't. I've just checked, a week in November is currently 1123€ so 160€ per night (£137).
It’s so amazing looking down from a plane and thinking there are some places on earth that has never been stepped on, EVER.
It was a very good travel day blog today chilling out and staying in
thanks
I’m so glad you showed the flights, how you get to Svalbard… love it!
Love the hotel room, yes a little more simple probably modules build elsewhere and just put together.
We always stay at the Radisson at the Atlanta airport the night before when we travel and it is amazing. Big beautiful rooms and wonderful bathrooms.
Looks like you had such amazing time there Tim with an adventure, really love the sound how the hot tub and the sauna was included in your hotel.
Interesting experience. Landing on a snowy runway! 🌨🌨❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄
I’m going to Norway in 3 weeks! I’m getting excited. Thanks for showing this.
Looks like an amazing trip, Tim. Great hotel as well. This has to be on my bucket list. I don’t think £146 per night is bad with breakfast and jacuzzi etc especially where it is!
I visited Svalbard on a cruise in June 2022, so it was nice to revisit some familiar sights. It’s well worth the effort to get there.
Hi Tim! I’ve been watching you for almost a year now, and I can honestly say I always look forward to new Tim video!
Your editing is so good, and videos are really fun to watch and so informative so thank you.
Merry Christmas! 🎉
Means alot thank you
Because of this and Steve Marsh video I'm going to Longyearbyen and staying at Radisson Blu in March 2026,looks amazing
Tim, a really GREAT and extreme venture, that again brought lots of smiles to me and your myriad of other fans!
You are fantastic and really transforming the average person toward feeling as if they are right there with you!!
Keep up the fantastic work (hope you, Gaby, Thumps, and all feeling better & 100% for Christmas!!)
Means alot thanks bill
Such lovely words Bill x
So happy to see you back
One thing you didn't mention, there is no tax on beer in Spitsbergen so beer is around the same price as the UK.
Lol
When i visited Svalbard i looked at many polar bears and walrusses .I was on a ship going around the island.
Excellent video! This is fascinating. I've heard of "polar routes" or the "great circle route" for flights but I have never thought about actually flying close enough to the North Pole and something as every day as hotels there. Happy, safe travels and Happy Holidays!🥂
Thanks for the tour. Really enjoyed it.
Huset means house very odd name for a restaurant
You sure it was called that
Tromso is a beautiful city. During the summer they have the Midnight Sun marathon.
That coziness you like is called hygge
Awesome TH-cam content creator. Deserves WAY more viewers.
Thanks
Thank you
Wow Tim, thank you so much for sharing this with us all! ⭐ Merry Christmas to you and you're family xxx
Thank you, Merry Christmas to you too
Stunning footage above the clouds can see the outline of our universe
Thank you for explaining why that stuffed polar bear was killed and what the animal welfare laws were regarding that. I’m just glad he won’t suffer from his illness anymore!! Also, I love that you saw a reindeer!!!! He’s so cute!!!
I travelled lil over 70 countries and certainly I shall go to Svalbard as soon as I can .. nice video 😊
Oslo always reminds me of Onslow from Keeping up Appearances lol.. great video 👍
Been this very route to Svalbard. Stayed a week. Now I live and work Svalvard.
Cant wait 😂
Wow never seen a vlog of the most northern hotel in the world I had to Google about polar bears I cannot believe the size of them I'm just saying that reindeer casually going about it's business it was amazing thank you Tim
Oh this is one of the places I’d love to go during the Polar night to experience darkness 24/7. Lol
Congratulations to you both, so well deserved. Keep up the great work , all the best for 2024 🎉
Thank you for sharing your trip. And Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!😊😊😊
Happy holidays!
This Radisson is absolutely beautiful in my eyes
