This boys and girls is Vivian Campbell THE MOST UNDERAPPRECIATED guitar player in the history of rock and roll history. He is a true rock God. Listen to him, learn him because when he is gone the world will have lost a top 5 guitarist. A true hero for me. He has played guitar with some of the top rock bands ever.
First, I'd like to say. That would be a lower case g. Secondly. I'd like to mention, that He is not an unappreciated guitar player. This guy has been and done that. He's worked with Ozzy. Whitesnake. Dio... the list goes along way. I've met him and preformed with him in Michigan. He's a bad dude.
Vivian hasn't lost a step. The solo sounds like the album. Incredible. He should be proud of the albums he cut with Ronnie James Dio. Holy Diver and the last of line are two of The Greatest Albums ever made and Vivian played on both
Viv played on 3 Dio albums. By the the third he was probably sick of making $400 a week and doesn't sound all that inspired.lol

I totally agree with this comment. I wonder if touring with Def Leppard had anything to do with polishing his skill? I’m not a big fan of Def Leppard, but they do play a more “quieter” live show than this setting was. Anybody that plays guitar knows that less distortion requires more skill. And as many shows that Def Leppard has played, they have perfected their sound down to every note it seems. It’s almost like hearing the studio versions of the songs they perform live. So ya, in my opinion, being in that situation every night, plus the fact this was his song to begin with, no doubt he sounded so clean through out. Next level indeed.
He’s always been an incredible metal guitarist. Dio was lucky to have Vivian but didn’t get the respect he deserved from Dio.
Having Vivian Campbell playing second fiddle In def leppard is like driving to Tesco’s in a Ferrari. He should have been a bigger star than he was. Saw him in Belfast in the early days in sweet savage. We all knew he was going somewhere. Great guy. And a great player.

I’m a big Leppard fan and am really disappointed in how his role has developed in the band. Their current album has none of his song writing on it. Phil is great but Vivian is phenomenal and should be more out front than he is. If he’s happy, that’s what matters though.
One of my top 3 favorite guitarists……the other 2 are Randy Rhoades and Eddie Van Halen…..he’s in excellent company in my top 3.

Vivian Campbell. This guy is dealing with cancer that must take a lot out of him. Yet he continues to inspire and awe with his playing! Simply one of the best ever. Speed at night is one of my favorites from him.

It was good. Would have been more impressive if it was sung in the original key and not everything tuned to E flat. However, the guitar is still absolutely awesome.

Best solo ever. Been learning it for years but seriously for 5 months straight and still can't nail it all the way through lol. Learned so much just in this one solo.
Vivian's guitaring is another level that only few can reach.
Happiest I’ve seen him on stage for years. He just stagnates as the rhythm guitar in def lep where Phil solo’s over most songs and NEVER lets Vivian do any solo! Sure, he gets paid, but what a creativity-crusher that gig is!

The singer shouldn't be having the crowd singing the lines of such a nuanced song. To me that's a let down and bad taste, not doing his job.
But perhaps in the middle of some party rocking song that old concert gimmick still works without taking away from the music too much.

Vivian's playing aged perfectly. This is what musical maturity looks like. He built upon something already great and made it more passionate, smoother and more carefully crafted. Easily in my top 5 guitarists.

I’m not so sure, Vivian is awesome! But I think he’s lost some speed since the early days, he’s nearly 60, and has been strumming chords in Def leppard for too long lol

Vinnie’s trudging groove is incredible and his playing is just unmistakable, I always know it’s him. Easily one of my favorite rock/metal drummers.

And let's just say a lot of people in this business seem to have lot of grudges..I think this is due to the fact that Vinny does not have a huge EGO. He was a good hardworking guy, and put in his best. And if you are good with that, karma will follow.....Love Vinny!
@@dabo7130 nice! I’ve never met Vinnie before but I did get to spend an evening with his brother Carmine. His brother was an awesome gun, total gentleman. We had him in for a drum clinic at my old job and Carmine was fantastic. Afterwards we went out to dinner and bs’d for a good 4 hours while eating and having some drinks. He gave me some great insight into the industry, talked about his book and how he worked out the deals with that, and how Rod Stuart was such a good guy for giving Carmine a writing credit on “If you want my body...”. I would imagine that Vinnie is just as good of a guy as his brother. Awesome evening that I will never forget.
@@kevinb8527 So cool, yes what a family, these guys are legends in the drummer world. Count yourself blessed buddy, Carmine is a star in his own right, he played with such total stars. Ozzy, Stewart, Fudge, King Cobra and who knows who else, but Vinny was my hero. When I bought Holy Diver and put the needle on the player in 83 I knew....Backtracking, forward tracking, he is the man for me, such a sweet guy, and heavy hitter.

I loved Dio and always knew, even as a kid, Vivian was amazing. Got to see them during the Sacred Heart tour. Was one of my favorite shows and I’ve seen many many bands. This is one of my favorite guitar solos ever.
Everyone is talkging about Vivian's amazing guitar playing but we have to give credits to the out of this world vocalist. He is an amazing rock tenor.
I haven't heard any of his other work but I did not find the vocalist particularly good in this recording. Vivian gets comments because he was spot-on with his performance.

With Def Leppard he's a team player and he shares the stage with the great Phil Collen, With this Band you really get see and hear his chops. Truly one of the greats.
I think everybody freaked when he joined and became more the rhythm player. Collen was so underrated back then.

@@SPQRTempus - Yeah, Phil Collen is pretty generic, IMO. Vivian taking a back seat to him is like having Michael Jordan riding the bench in favor of Spuds MacKenzie. Leppard’s first two records were great, but they lost the plot soon after and became just another over-produced, cheesy 80’s band. Idk how Viv can play Pour Some Sugar On Me with a straight face after being such an integral part of the band Dio and the insanely good heavy rock they made.
Vivian and Vinny could be in any band and make it great… Vinnie is got to be one of the top five drummers still alive and Vivian Campbell is an awesome guitar player

The best Dio song. Vinnie is amazing on this song, and so is Vivian. Shame he and Ronnie couldn't stay together. They could have been one the greatest legendary singer-guitarist combinations.

If this live performance by Campbell and Vinny bring more people into listening to Dio, then that is simply a great thing. My all time favorite was so under appreciated, and it is a travesty to more people don’t know how amazing RJD was. One of my happiest days was when my 7 year old son heard me playing Rainbow In The Dark, and he asked me “Who’s that, Dad?” And then he and I got to have an awesome conversation

Saw Vivs first 3 tours with Dio and always thought he was a guitar god. Love his chops with Dio. Saw him throw his guitar 2 handed overhead to the side of the stage because it was cutting out during one of his solos during the Sacred Heart tour 1985 at Reunion Arena Dallas...he seemed really frustrated, little did I know it would be the last time I would see him with Dio. That was an incredible line-up. Dio severely fucked not paying these guys well to keep them. I played the hell out of Holy Diver & Last In Line & I remember on the Sacred Heart tour there was a hologram of Dio on stage of only his face in a large circle describing what the Sacred Heart was, there was a large moving dragon breathing smoke and two large sword wielding knights on either side of the stage that would turn towards each other and blast red lasers at each other...was one of the most amazing concerts I had ever seen and I was wandering is every concert going to start doing things like this, would all bands try to out do this shit. But the answer tuned out to be no. Dio was a unique band at an amazing time during the start of true metal, Slayer/Metallica formed in 81 but didn’t have significant albums/tours till 85 (Reign In Blood) 86 (Master Of Puppets) really the first good Metal tours since 81 Diary Of A Madman. I seen them all, I hope these guys come to Dallas when this COVID-19 shit goes away can’t wait to see them.

kkarx Is Kill em all & Ride great?...absolutely, got’em both when they first came out...kill em all aka metal up your ass renamed, I had the metal up your ass t-shirt, love them both and yes k.e.a. Was pivotal in the history of speed metal I personally watched Dimebag aka Diamond Darrell learn seek & destroy & whiplash and incorporate both songs into Panteras nightly shows but I think Metallica only performed 7 live shows of k.e.a. Both kea and ride were from Megaforce records who couldn’t even cover the cost of recording ride, Metallica had to get their European label to cover the cost $30,000. I’m not sure Metallica even came through Dallas in the early days so for me when Metallica signed to Electra Records and toured with Ozzy which I saw and met all the guys even shook Cliff Burtons hand just a few months before he was killed yes MOP was their first significant album and from a fans point of view becoming a world wide phenomenon. It’s comparable to Slayers first 3 albums Show No Mercy, Haunting the Chapel, Hell awaits all Metal Blade label then released RIB on def Jam distributed by Columbia Record...produced by Rick Rubin major difference in production and backing, so much more “significant” in sales/sound quality/tour etc.
Never thought Metallica was that great sorry but priest seen them in 70s 80s and within last 10 years as well that's metal of course sabbath purple and hendrix started it all and they were the best also triumph early vh and dio
