Agreed. Rik's pipes were not what they once had been when I saw him in a small club in the late 90s, but it seems after the Triumph reunion period (where the vocals for both Rik and Gil were still a bit iffy) it seems like he's refined his vocal technique, judiciously softening a bit, and getting results more like in the younger days. Quite impressive.
Who are the 61 morons to give this a thimb down. The man is over 60, and his pipes haven't lost much at all, as any true fan could tell. His guitar playing is so amazing. Unreal anyone would think of giving a thumbs down. Wow!!
This guy single handedly out performed everyone @ the 83 US festival, no one out sung or out played Rik on metal Sunday. and he did it in 104 degree heat and hot stage lights while running around. amazing performance!
And I was Blessed* to be there, not far from under him, witnessing this glorious, historical event! Seem like 15 years ago, not close to 40 years ago! !!
Fact. Triumph were the good guys amidst the degenerates ( who I also loved). Anyone watching that knows they came out on top, with Scorpions in close second, imho.
@sunnyrock4404 IMHO. Missed it. My gf stole the tickets, sold them for dope. I stupidly forgave her. The jokes on her, she's not 16 and beautiful anymore, lol.
Grew up listening to Triumph. Rik Emmett remains one of the most underrated guitarists of our time. His vocals are still so clear and precise. Amazing.
Dave Dunlop is fantastic in his own right. Rik knew what he was doing teaming up with him. They are great together. Such a great duo. They are both great human beings too. That matters to me. I was fortunate enough to open for Rik and his band. He saw my white Marshalls and my singer told him what an inspiration Rik's playing was for me growing up. Coming off stage after the set, Rik grabbed me and told me to leave my rig up on stage, he asked me if I knew Magic Power (the encore). Being stunned I responded with, "What version? The album, or the live '82 Baltimore one?" He said, "I don't even remember that. You'll be fine." It was amazing, we did a 10-minute round robin guitar solo Between Rik, Doug, and me. This also happened to be the first date that me and my girl had. 17 years later she's still here, so I might owe Rik for more than just a great musical experience....:)
Awesome story Dan, thank you for sharing! I’ve always admired Rik as such an amazing virtuoso, who also happens to have equally amazing vocals, lyrics, such a great talent that you would hope would also be such an equally amazing human being. Good stuff.
Blame Canada for that!! Too many great bands..to mention.. It would be cool to see a 1 off show even,.., This may be as close as Triumph I'll see Tanx 4 post
Damn this brings a big smile to my face, a flood of memories to my mind and although im not an emotional guy my eyes well up with tears of happiness while I listen to it! Thanks Rik for the music. I really believe the lack of this type of music and artist is a big part of whats wrong with our younger generation today, really the world in general. Remember when we couldnt wait for one of our favorite bands new albums to come out or the announcement of their new tour dates. What talent, a lot of musicians lose a step as they get older, Rik's just gotten better!
Rik has never abused his voice, this is very natural register for him so he's never had to struggle, he's just got the most beautiful pristine tone without even trying.
Man!!! Still love Triumph in 2019. Their music never gets old. Been listening since early 80s. Wow still sounds fresh and new. Anyone else listening feeling the way I do.👍😎🐶Me and Bell Bell think this is one of the most underrated bands ever. They get no love. I dont get it. I know they're from Canada. But they are almost as great as Rush which says alot in my book.👍😇😎🐶👍
Maybe that's the reason why he still has his vocal chops. Being under rated for decades makes you not rest on your laurels and fight the good fight and push away father time.
Stevr asked Rick when the met: "How do you hit those high notes?" Rick was puzzled by the question because he felt Steve hit the high notes perhaps better than anyone.
I am 56 yrs. old, woke at 5 a.m. and this song was on my mind. Singing on the way to take a leak. This song or one of Triumphs great songs, is always what is still rocking in my head to this very day. And my girl can't figure out why I wake up singing especially when I am as sick as I am. I missed this Darryls House show, but I will find it. Triumph was a highly underrated band. 3 bad ass musicians putting out all that sound, simply incredible ! And Rick still has that voice at his age ? Simply gifted, and it didn't go to waste. That's obvious Rick, if your reading this ? 39 years later from when I first heard Triumph, and I am waking to your music in my head ? It's obviously still in my heart !!! Because my head has seen its better days ! Great acoustical version and voice ? Spot on brother.. Long live Rick Emmett !
Since the only antidote to growing old is dying young, I've learned to live with it. Remember, it's always better to be looking down at the green than to be looking up at the brown.
HOLY crap! OK, I pressed play feeling kindof sad, thinking, how many octaves down is he going to have to start this song? What? Who on this planet after all these years can still hit notes like that? THEN... two acoustics, for a powerful song like Magic Power, they built up the tension, nailed it! I'm floored, stunned, impressed... Amazing!
rick seems like a great guy, but then again, he's Canadian so there's that. his voice still sounds like 1981. what a underrated band. saw them front row in 1985 and i thought i was gonna die from the volume of pyrotechnics going off in my face. their live shows were second to none.
Agreed. And Gil Moore was dumb af to let him get away. Silly to insist outside writers create songs for Gil to sing, when they had such a stud in Rik Emmett writing bangers for them. And I'm not dissing Gil's vocals here...he was amazing too. But dang, to piss off your bandmate and primary singles writer? Not a smart move. I always hear Rik say in tht one interview of how Triumph was all Gil's band, so that pretty much tells the story.
So great to check in after a year and see that it has doubled it's views and that people are catching on to this magic performance! When I saw this I was captivated and kept watching it...
Nailed it is right! How the heck are people sitting around in a 'pub' like there's something not amazing happening? I'd be dancing and freaking out! Jeeeez people. Let's move it! Live a little.
What amazes me about Rik Emmett is that he manages to sing nearly in Geddy Lee's range without falsetto - *and* he is an immensely accomplished lead guitarist, as well.
Actually, he and Geddy have virtually the same vocal range - or had, I should say, as Ged stopped reaching for those crazy notes from the early albums quite a few years ago, while Rik in this video still sounds like he can hit the range from his youth with ease. Geddy's highest note on a studio recording is a Bb5 in "Cygnus X-1", while Rik actually hits a B5 on a couple of tunes ("Big Lie" and "Cool Down"). For some reason, though, classic Geddy sounds higher than Rik, even when they're singing the same note. I would say it has to do with their respective combination of singing style and vocal timbre - Rik's sound tends to be less dramatic, but fuller and more rounded, which makes it come across as less intense than Geddy's. It's that intensity that makes Geddy sound higher than Rik when, in fact, they have pretty much the same upper range.
I am child of 80s meaning HS 84-88. What happened to music? Wow. RIK has still got it - all of it. Having performed live for over 30 hrs, I can tell you, without a doubt, it's not easy to maintain that level of totally professional & truly awesome vocal quality. My hat is off to you - I know you're dealing w adversities right now and my heart goes out to you. ❤
+Christopher Lee Hello there! Rik was born in July 10, 1953. So, he is 62 years old now (oct/2015) and he was 61 years old by the time the video was taken.
I remember seeing Triumph perform live during there "Allied Forces" tour. They stood out as the most talented and gifted musicians I ever witnessed. Always sounded like they were playing straight from the studio.
one of the greatest rock voices(and bands) ever! if i had a buckett list,,,,hearing rick sing live would be at the top!!! wow,,you still have a fantastic voice!!!
I was hired to record Triumph’s live record with my Artisan Mobile recording truck in the 80s in Orlando, Florida. I had never heard Triumph before the live date. I remember being gobsmacked (great brit word) hearing Rik play and sing and this particular song rang in my head for months after. His voice sounds incredible after all the years. Great memories!
I saw Rik and Dave do this song in Syracuse a few years back and about two dozen girls ( okay, women in their 40's -50's) rush the stage to dance...Rik was a bit surprised but seemed to marvel at himself that he in his mid 60's still could get women to do things like that! :)
Wow!! Very impressed in Rik's sound today!!! He hasn't missed a beat!!! One of my favorite all time songs!! For a few minutes while the song played I felt young again!!!
WOW ...he sounds like he did when they recorded it back in the day!!! LOVE IT~~~
Wow was the first word I thought of and low and behold your comment was the first I read, you said it all.
Doesnt he tho?
Hell ya he does man. Awesome!!
Yup
Now that is how you age gracefully as a rock star. 🤘
Well said.
Right?? I'm still crushing on him 😍
Yup, sex... NO DRUGS, and rock n roll.
Rik is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, and one of the most talented too!
Well said
a 70 year old man hitting this? Unbelievable. What a talented dude. Seems very genuine too.
Who are the 61 morons to give this a thimb down. The man is over 60, and his pipes haven't lost much at all, as any true fan could tell. His guitar playing is so amazing. Unreal anyone would think of giving a thumbs down. Wow!!
This dude has been grossly underrated for his vocals and even his guitar skills. He’s unreal.
This guy single handedly out performed everyone @ the 83 US festival, no one out sung or out played Rik on metal Sunday. and he did it in 104 degree heat and hot stage lights while running around. amazing performance!

Quiet Riot was pretty close

Quite possibly The Number One Greatest Performance In Arena Rock.
EVER.
This is how musicians should age gracefully! This guy is and always was way above everyone vocally and musically. True master!
goddamn....so amazing...tears
Holy shit his voice is awesome - I’m back in my dodge van with the fur covered JBL speakers cranking up that cassette!
Holy hell, how is his voice still like that?! This brings me back wow!
Amazing isn't it?
His voice is still strong.
@@davidgraham2673I love his vocals ❤
Grew up listening to Triumph. Rik Emmett remains one of the most underrated guitarists of our time. His vocals are still so clear and precise. Amazing.
Jill Gibson you are so right, girl.
Jill Gibson I saw Triumph twice at Alpine Valley great outdoor concert.
I agree totally Jill Glenn Augustyn
VERY well said! Rik is one of my favorite guitar players!
Jill Gibson His voice is as strong and crystaline as when he was in his 20's & 30's. A rare thing.
Who the f*ck would give this a thumbs down?? This is fine fine stuff.
The most underrated Guitarist-Singer ever!
Tony Clifton absolutely true!
Completely agree! It’s not an exaggeration. He really is the most underrated of all time.
One of the most beautiful voices in music.
HIS VOICE IS ONE OF THE BEST IN ROCK AND ROLL PERIOD.
2023, and this is pretty incredible. What a classic!
Rik still has the chops !!
Crazy how some guys voices can stand up to time and others fade...well done Rik
Dave Dunlop is fantastic in his own right. Rik knew what he was doing teaming up with him. They are great together. Such a great duo. They are both great human beings too. That matters to me. Too many great bands..to mention..
It would be cool to see a 1 off show even,..,
This may be as close as Triumph I'll see
Tanx 4 post
Growing up in Michigan in the 1980's, Canadian music was always on the radio. Rush, April Wine, Lover Boy and Triumph. So epic.
I always believe singers should hang it up when their voices get shot. Rik sounds like he's got another 50 years in him. wow
Awesome guitar and singing abilities seen triumph numerous times never a bad show

Rick Emett and Steve Perry. The best singers ever. Reminds me in my younger days.

Rik Emmett's guitar teacher was also my guitar teacher in music college in Toronto in the 80's; the late Peter Harris.
All these years later and he can still hit the notes that left me shortly after puberty.

Amazing! This cat has definitely taken great care of his voice over the years!
Wow!! Very impressed in Rik's sound today!!! He hasn't missed a beat!!! One of my favorite all time songs!! For a few minutes while the song played I felt young again!!!
