Ginoza: Psycho Pass' DEEPEST Character? | Anime Discussion

  • Ginoza is one of the most interest characters in anime. His story is a self-fulfilling prophecy that covers everything from inferiority, to the mania of the Sybil System, without attacking the anime's titan of a main story with Kogami and Makishima at all. The ideal citizen of an unideal god- let's dive deep into his story today!
    _____
    His story starts at the young age of 8, when his father was designated a latent criminal, and taken away from his family. This event shifted his mentality forever, as he placed the blame on his father, and not society. So, Ginoza came to believe in the Sibyl System, viewing the opposite stance as a character flaw that leads to failure. This is why he becomes so bland and up tight, trying to protect himself from his father's fate. He acts cold to everyone, so that no one can hurt him again. All of these elements play together so well, and fit under his principle: "a fool learns from his mistake. The wise learn from history."

    Fun fact kogami actually followed gino. Even though you can look at kogami as a better detective. He followed his friends to help him achieve his goals. Becoming a detective was gino’s goal not kogami’s

    Your great analysis of the Psycho Pass shows the most scary part of the perfect totalitarian ideology based world. And i think the true core of Psycho Pass series. Trying to understand the characters and feeling how scary real they are, makes this such a great example of why people need to be free in doing stupid things. And its mostly our mission, *the mission of people* to make *people* choose to do smart things *and not get the system do it for you* . Thanks for good analysis and a new wave of deep thoughts on the weekend.

    • @ProfessorViral
      @ProfessorViral  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, the complacency of society in the Psycho-Pass world is terrifying. The system decided on their will for them, and over time, they accepted it as the truth and stopped seeking for more. It's debatable if it's worth it; many of them are happy, but are they human? It always make me question what it means to be human, what's important, and as Shogo focuses on, how much is free will an aspect of that, and how much does it exist? I love that every character ties into it in their own way, link Gino recognizes, or having the ability to understand these concepts, but pushing them do to achieve "success." But, thank you for watching, and for the comment! : D

    Thank you for making such a deeply thoughtful video on Ginoza! He's my favorite character in Psycho-Pass, though I didn't really care for him at first. His character arc reminds me of Charles Winchester from M*A*S*H*. Both shows are dominated by forces the characters are bound by, the Korean War and the Sibyl System. Both characters start out as jerks who consistently present themselves as superior, but eventually you see they're both deeply caring individuals. It's just their defensive walls are so restrictive they rarely let anyone get close.
    I know it's not super similar reasoning, but there's something about how Gino abandons his glasses after his Dad dies, that reminds me of how Charles broke the record of his iconic record player after the members of the local band he helped conduct, all get killed.
    They both know what it's like to pour their heart and soul into something, only to have it all come crashing down around them. I guess to a certain extent everyone knows that feeling, but the fact that their hearts are so guarded and their souls so bound, it's more tragic when they break because of how intensely they strive to avoid anguish.
    Thank you again for this tribute to Ginoza, your words are truly touching. 💙

      @ProfessorViral  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem, thank you for the kind words. In such a stellar cast, he definitely needed some more attention. I also love the MASH comparison, I've been watching that more recently, and the later episodes with Charles where they really lean into the serious side of things are my favorites

    "Everyone leaves me! For the other side of the law..."
    If that's the case, then that should be your cue to see that the law is broken. Often is the case, we're taught the law is sacred, and needs to be protected... But what good are laws if they don't protect people, but instead only serve to protect the system that creates the criminals it's meant to punish?

    • @ProfessorViral
      @ProfessorViral  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think that's where it really ties in with Akane's idea of the law, that we protect it and not the other way around. As such, the things that go against the will of the people are false incarnations of the "law"

  • @apurva373
    @apurva373 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    gaaah it has been two years since this anime came out, and no one really cares anymore. but since you didn't focus on season 2 i'll do it here
    After he loses his father gino loses his false belief in the sybil system which ultimately leads to his crime coefficient increasing. This is what I think happens because once he becomes a latent criminal, he's psychologically more balanced, not disturbed. The reason for his high CC is his loss of faith in the system, and partially, him using his intellect and gut in his cases.
    Now to the fact that he becomes a more balanced person. When masaoka dies he loses everything that he was afraid of losing- kogami, his father, his position- and in doing that it forces him to also let go of his fear. He stops being afraid of using his gut in investigation, he learns how to take a stand against his senior inspectors and addresses his concern for mika and akane in not this harsh, asshole way like he used to when he was in a position of power, but in a more gentle way. He becomes more genuine with his words and feelings and his emotional expression matures into what he means it to be. He's also able to pursue what _he_ thinks justice is (when he aims his dominator at the division 1 enforcer) and not what sybil thinks it is, because according to the system he's already being punished for it by being a latent criminal.
    Losing masaoka and being put in his position inside an isolation facility must have been eye opening for him because after introspection he must've finally understood how and why his father went down the path that he did, and gave him the closure he needed to identify with his dad. In a way, becoming a latent criminal made him move on from his past and forgive masaoka and connect with him.
    He also tries to be more like masaoka in how he calls mika "missy" because she's much younger, and advising her multiple times to not go by the book + dressing a bit like him

    • @ProfessorViral
      @ProfessorViral  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For character analysis it's just the series itself. There's not really a set methodology, since every story will be different, so I just watch the entire series and take notes on the character and how their situation/surroundings do/don't change based on their actions, and the inverse as well
