    I really want to thank you for creating this video! I bought a M50 for photography, but also wanted to use it for streaming and I was having a terrible time trying to get this to work with OBS! Your video is the first one I found that actually went into detail about the cables needed. So many videos just say, "the cord that came in your box", but my camera kit did not come with a cord so I had no idea what I needed. I ended up ordering the cables you suggested and everything is working now! I'm so happy! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

    I’m finding that just running straight out of USB is the best way to go. No screen timeouts, clean HDMI (no on screen graphics), auto focus still works and as long as you have the dial set to record the flip out still works. No camlink needed. Just need something like ecamm to read the camera.

      Use 'camera live' and 'cam twist driver' if you are on Mac. start canon utility3 then use just usb from m50 to usb in computer. in obs create game capture(syphon) . Don't use the video capture.Use create game capture(syphon) instead .

    Great video. There is another option but you gotta pay. Sparkocam lets you keep autofocus hides all your display items and keeps the camera from going to sleep. Canon's utility has a nice "price" being free, but that dual pixel autofocus might be worth it to a lot of people...like me.

      @@DianaGladney Hi great vid! new subscriber here! btw I'm planning to try out ecamm live with the USB method on the M50 because of what you said in this comment, but what is the video quality? because I use OBS (coz it's free) and for the M50 to connect to the software via usb, I have to run the "Camera live" app but the video is kinda low quality. that's why we bought the elgato camlink but it's not really 4k it's only 1080p and it's still lower quality than if I recorded 1080p directly to the camera. so what is the video quality with ecamm live streaming via USB? thanks

  • @RandyWHorton

    Just use a USB cable and Camera Live from get hub thats it thats all! (You can do a 2 hour live broadcast on a single charge).

    • @DianaGladney
      @DianaGladney  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is actually an older video and that was what was available at that time. However, you can live stream via USB using several other methods that are now available on the channel. Plus, using HDMI has a lot of limitation which is why I did this video. But if you have Ecamm Live you can use the native Canon Camera feature there and Canon has released a Webcam Utility Beta for both Mac and Windows users to live stream via USB. I've used Ecamm for nearly 2 years live streaming via USB and I've gotten up to 6hrs before I got tired and quit lol So, you can stream for a really long time if you like and not need a capture card. Just a thought.

      @DianaGladney  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much!
      Unfortunately, you can't bypass the recording limit inside the camera. Unless you're connected to software/computer in some way, that's the only type of way you can record (through the software, like Ecamm Live) to record unlimitedly. Otherwise, if you're just in the middle of the park on a tripod for example, you are stuck at the 30 minute limit. You'd have to go to Sony or Panasonic if you want true unlimited video recording options. My recommendation would be Sony.

    • @DianaGladney
      @DianaGladney  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This video is actually outdated, it's not needed to live stream this way any longer because there are other options to get around all the limitations. But if you continue using the capture card with the M50, I didn't do anything different than what I showed in the video for it to work really, so the USB port keeping the camera "busy" kept it from shutting off.

      Diana Gladney - EntreWoman TV perfect! Thank you. even though there are a few other options out there this one still gives the clearest signal by far. That new canon utility BETA is great but until they are able to put a feed through that is greater resolution than 560 I don’t see it really being beneficial for streaming. Sparko cam has great features as well but causes some pretty bad frame skipping and brings down the smoothness of the video as well as reduced the clarity. Thank you for all of your help! @@DianaGladney Hi Diana, so I downloaded the EOS Webcam utility and connected it via USB. I did disable the auto shut off in the menu options (wrench, page 4 in the camera). That seemed to work fine and it lasted longer than 30 minutes, in fact, I think it lasted over an hour or so. The only thing is the battery life doesn't last as long so I ordered a Raeisusp power supply (should be arriving soon). I did also buy a capture card and HDMI cable and connected and tested it tonight. It shut off after 30 minutes. I really loved the quality of the HDMI. when I connected the M50 via the USB using the EOS utility it was a bit laggy. In OBS when I added a video capture device, it recognized either the EOS utility or the HDMI connection as "USB Video." I stream on Twitch and I've tried both setups (USB + EOS utility: and the capture card + HDMI cable). The game Twitch Sings DOES NOT find the the EOS utility but it will find the USB video (HDMI) which is fantastic! But the camera shuts off at 30 mins. What should I do. I hope you understood all of that. If there's a way to show you or explain it to you better I'd be happy to do that.

So you hook up both connections, HDMI to the Device Capture and mini-USB to computer?

    I'm so curious why this strategy even works? I've had my 70d shut off after 30 min with live view - and also shut off after 30 min with the elgato. But when used together it overrides it somehow?

    • @DianaGladney
      @DianaGladney  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I honestly have no idea why it works but when I tested it went for over an hour lol
      I would assume because the camera is giving priority to the USB connection and the EOS Utility app running keeps the camera "awake" vs it timing out beyond 30 minutes. Then, connecting it via HDMI just gives you the camera feed so you can have it read as web camera but that's my best guess. If you have a mac Ecamm Live is the best way. Other than that a buddy of mine has used Sparkocam but it's kind of meh but it gets the job done. I wish it didn't have to be hacked but these are the only options for real. Hope that helps!

This being an older video, you really don't need to do all this as there are options to live stream via USB now available for the Canon M50. However, if you're planning on using this method, I'm not sure what you'd be getting the screen you're seeing though. Sorry I can't be of more help.

    So by having the USB AND HDMI connected it somehow overrides the 30min shutdown in live view? I have a Canon 7Dmk2 I've been using from streaming and tried but the USB and Cam link separately but it still shuts down the live view after 30min. Nope! No way that I know of. The best option is to choose a better camera. The only cameras that record unlimited is nearly all Panasonic cameras, the Sony a6400, a6600 and the Sony A7R4. Other than that you'd have to get some camera that does unlimited recording or has a native clean HDMI out and then you can connect and monitor/recorder and record on the HDMI monitor but the best thing is just to get a better camera with unlimited recording and those usually have clean HDMI out natively.

      @@RichTechnologyGroup lol No worries, questions don't bother me one bit!
      If you need a camera like today, the one nearest to everything you're mentioning and will have stellar autofocus, good for indoor or near window lower lighting (I'd still say have some lighting no matter what camera though) and has clean HDMI out and unlimited recording would be the Sony a6400. I just took a look like 5 seconds ago and B&H Photo Video in NY (that's a place you can trust their used gear) has a used on for $748.50 that comes with a kit lens. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/802090886-USE/sony_ilce_6400l_b_alpha_a6400_mirrorless_digital.html
      Otherwise, Panasonic wouldn't be "great" in lower light for real (it's a smaller sensor size which is why but it's not horrible) or autofocus (you'd end up using manual focus, the Panasonic G85 I used to own and it has unlimited recording and clean HDMI out. Again, autofocus is a biggie here but it's priced at about $600 on Amazon used & $557 on B&H: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/802054646-USE/panasonic_dmc_g85mk_lumix_dmc_g85_mirrorless_micro.html
      Amazon: amzn.to/2HGeiSG
      Used G85's on Amazon but doesn't include a lens start at $485: amzn.to/3bYZFba
      Anything else sub $500 if Panasonic will be the same issues like the G85 and them some cameras like their G7 or GX85 have 30 min rec limits.
      Any DSLR from Canon, 30 min limit and terrible in-camera preamps and no clean HDMI out.
      And YES, all of these cameras have built-in microphones but I wouldn't recommend using them. If anything, you can get a shotgun mic that's like $20 or $30 and put it on a little stand near you using an audio extension cable and it'll give you great audio. If you want 2 options I have used for that let me know and I'll comment the gear list for those.
      Hope this helps!

      Great question! I personally still use my phone in some capacity when going live or recording a video that way, so I don't want to lock my phone into being used. I personally don't need the Cam Link to stream I use Ecamm Live so it's just natively built-in and that solves the problem. Since some people also use other apps, it just works for some to let the computer take the extra work vs lock up the phone for streaming too.

  • @DianaGladney
    @DianaGladney  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    * IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED you use this method to live stream on the Canon M50 Mark 1 via HDMI out.* The Canon M50 does not have clean HMDI and will constantly be an issue trying to use HDMI as a streaming option. I'd recommend live stream via USB using Ecamm Live that can go up to 4K or use Canon's Webcam Utility software for live streaming (lower resolution of less than 720p) or consider a camera model that has Clean HDMI out for live streaming. This was meant to be a temp fix pre-2020 live streaming demands.

      Honestly no, this was only supposed to be a short fix. I wouldn't recommend live streaming with the Canon M50 via HDMI. If you want to keep the M50, I would at least consider swapping it out and trading in your camera body for the new Canon M50 Mark 2 or the M6 Mark 2 that has clean HDMI out. Otherwise, live streaming via USB is going to be the best route when live streaming on the M50 Mark 1.

    So I'm a little confused. I know there's a 30 min record limit but if you're pulling the feed through USB with Camera Live and Ecamm Live, why is there a restriction? Thanks.

    • @DianaGladney
      @DianaGladney  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is not associated with using Ecamm. With Ecamm you only have to connect via usb only. They already have a built in system to stream withoit any limits and have autofocus enabled. If you have the cam link to connect via hdmi you lose autofocus and previously were subject to the 30 min limit typical with Canon. By connecting this way, for this method only, you now avoid being limited to a 30 minute limit. That's why I love Ecamm, it didn't matter what the camera's restrictions are, they built in the workaround in their software.

      If you can even get a used original Canon battery, that's still better and runs longer than the third party batteries. In the video I did about the batteries the Big Mikes battery lasted the longest of those I've tested. However, since that video one went bad and swole up and had to be thrown out. You can still try them but Wasabi batteries are also known to be good.

    Hi Diana...thank you for all the video's that you are doing, this one has been so helpful. I realized I needed to completely remove the Cannon webcam utility from my iMac and only use the EOS Utility 3 (as you suggested)...and my Elgato capture card. As long as the utility is open the camera never shuts down at 30 minutes. So one chord is coming from the camera into my computer to keep the utility working and another cord from my camera goes into the capture card and then into my computer. At least that is how it worked for me. However, at the moment I am not using Ecamm and just streaming straight to Zoom. Part of the reason I am not sold on Ecamm is that their green screen feature is not as good as Zoom and I love Zooms " touch up my appearance feature..LOL!"
    Now I need to figure out how to fix the audio latency. Any suggestions. Is there something in the camera that helps? This is my last frustration. I have tried everything I can think of including no green screen and it still is an issue. You seem to have no latency what so ever on your video. What are you doing to make that happen? Thank you for all you do!! -Katt

    • @DianaGladney
      @DianaGladney  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it's a pickle fiddling around with the limitations of some of these Canon cameras lol Since the webcam utility wasn't out at the time I did this video but I can see how the two softwares might clash a bit.
      As far as latency, yeah, that's never been something I've run into but I would check and see based on the type of mic you're using if the mic itself introduces any lag, sometimes it could be your computer struggling to process everything you have running a bit. In Ecamm I know they have a latency tool for your audio use can use and OBS has one but outside of those two, not sure how you could tackle that unfortunately.

      gabelim91 Nope! Unfortunately not. Unless you connect to software that allows you to bypass the timer and record via software, just regular internally recording on the m50 over 30 minutes isn’t possible. Because the camera actually isn't turning itself off, it goes into a sleep mode. If you're using the cam link and you don't have some alt method used to prevent this, your stream feed goes black and you need to wake up the camera.

    • @DianaGladney
      @DianaGladney  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Using this method is not something I honestly ever use. This was created as a help for the community. However wherever you designate a saved recording to go to like an external hard drive can still work. The only way I would pull content in from a stream to record is Ecamm Live. Then you can save it to an external hard drive in a nice high quality file for sure.
      Just make sure with any method you use you have a fast enough data transfer rate to the device or you risk your video filled being messed up or audio and video sync issues.

    In reading comments on multiple videos, I’m worried about lag, lipsync, and the HDMI out on the Canon M50. Using the cam as webcam within Zoom is a huge part of my usage. I’m starting to lean towards Sony Alpha series. Mainly because of the clean HDMI out, but I know software can remedy this for the M50.
    I’m stuck!! Lol someone help!

    • @DianaGladney
      @DianaGladney  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lag and sync issues is usually a computer issue, not a camera issue. If you’re using a weak or damaged cable that’s not transferring the data well or (often the mani problem) they don’t have enough RAM, essentially a strong enough computer to do everything they’re doing. Most people didn’t buy their computer for video and live streaming and they have 8GB of RAM and with 12 Chrome Browser tabs open, Zoom running and who knows what lol their computer is wheezing because it can’t process everything. So, they have issues lol
      The M50 was built for live streaming but there are ways around that. However if you want more features and you want clean HDMI natively built into the camera, Sony does a great job with that. The camera is a preference but the lag issues is user related.
