Interesting comment on leaving the D-Ring fastened! One of those seemingly obvious things that no one seems to have realized! I agree on the electrical tape part - I put two strips on the top of a faceshield for my western USA tour (east coast to west coast and back). Given how much riding we were doing into the sun, it was quite useful to just tilt my head down and block the setting sun.
After 40+ years of riding, it never occurred to me to keep the strap threaded in the buckle!! Brilliant! Been using the medical info sticker since my auto racing days. Something else I picked up then is tape shades on the visor. I use colored vinyl tape or wrap to create a shade that matches the helmet pattern. This is only for more upright head position...doesnt work for sportbike/track applications as you need to look "up".
For sun issues I tried putting some really dark tinting across the top (just above eye level on the inside) and have done it on every helmet since. I make a template out of paper first, then cut it out and spray soap/water so you can position it.
Lets be real, nobody is gonna ride with a huge sticker on their helmet listing all their personal details, blood type and diseases. But, as an attached note INSIDE the helmet (perhaps by chin strap), i agree would be a good idea.
This is probably the best hack here! It's super easy to make QR codes online for free and you can print it out as large or small as you want. You can fit a decent amount of text in a small space without it looking dumb. Some of the QR generators even let you change the color (in case you want to match your helmet). BRILLIANT!
Electric tape! Love it. I run with two strips at the very top of the visor all the time. If the sun is setting I just angle the helmet down a bit, and ride on.
We are now in a lockdown for some fictional reasons as it appears. all of our rights and freedom taken away in one day, however, every time I open youtube and one of your videos shows up, with that dual sports explorer machines and a beautiful scenery, it immediately lift up my spirit. Thanks a lot for all your work mate! We all need to lift up our mood and spirit, more than ever now, more than ever!
Big jump in risk from in-helmet speakers to earbuds....I do it on occasion. I also am stupid. But responsible enough to never suggest another rider be as stupid as me. Careful handing out advice that increases risk for another. Distracted riding on the phone is another argument to be made, it is not a cool feature. Pull over and talk, or ride, not both. Your awareness is the only thing keeping you alive.
Not sure if it’s been mentioned, but a 2” strip of window tint works great. I normally ride shield open, so just close the visor when the sun is really low.

I like the peak on my DS helmet. When the strap that attaches the peak to the top of the helmet (also good handle) broke I replaced it with an aluminum strap. I put several holes in the strap and can adjust how low the peak is. It gets very noisy if put too low. I have found that tape across the top of the face shield on my open helmet is almost as good for shading my eyes
I've used the electrical tape thing for years and really like it. For a couple years i used a ti t strip across the top of my visor and left it there full time. Either approach works well.
I purchased the 2" ProTapes Pro 50 Premium Vinyl Safety Marking and Dance Floor Splicing Tape from Amazon and used it on the top of the visor. I cut it at the top to match the form of the visor. It has been on there for over 2 years and works great! I think it looks good as well.
Most helmets in NZ seem to have micrometric retention systems rather than the d loops you demonstrated, they are easily opened and closed even with winter gloves. One of my colleagues used the final hack, he applied packing tape to the visor of a road helmet and left it there permanently, it didn't look good but apparently it was effective. I prefer the internal drop down visor that I have in both my helmets.
All the older dual-D helmets I'd ever used had straps too short to do what you show there, and no tab for the loosening either. The main thing I've always loathed about them though is the strap flapping against my neck. With my ratcheting-clip style helmet I have the strap at the correct length for me, with the excess looped back in the thingimajig so it has no excess which whips at my neck while I'm riding.
I wear prescription, non-transition dual viewing spectacles: My Shoei Neotech Modular helmet has an internal sun visor, just flip the lever, and viola, it's a miracle - I CAN SEE, I CAN SEE...!!!! Time to go - JUMP THE SHARK!
As a first responder I would like to chime in. For the medical alert sticker idea. First responders are trained to look for a bracelet, anklet, or necklace that would have that info on it. We will also take a look at the drivers license, so slipping a medical card in next to it could work. Just throwing that out. Save someone from posting their personal info on the billboard. On my helmet I took your tape idea one step further. I installed limo-black on the upper half of the visor. The top half gives me sunglasses level shielding from the sun but the clear half lets me see the road in front and the gauges clearly.
I haven't seen " D" rings in years!? My modern-style Freed Conn modular helmet has a built-in sun shield, Bluetooth, 3 closeable air vents with defroster vents for the inside of the face shield! The vents don't really work below 15 MPH though. So, I just crack the face shield a little. And the chin strap is a modern ratchet strip style. Kinda funny that I have to charge my helmet too now?!
Hack #2..I can relate.. I have a funny shaped head and I have been using a Hammer to fit my helmets for 30 years.. It beats them self clearencing upon impact and, no stitch work needed either.
LOL Think of the dumbest person you have ever met! That is 50% of the world's population ,they do not read directions! that's why there are signs/stickers on lawn mowers for them to only be used on the ground, or a sign that says This is a door that opens! These are what are known as NPC or what I call Sheeple!
If you haven’t switched to a quikStrap wearing your strap across your shield accomplishes the same thing from my experience. Far more effective than the peak.

We need a better hack for a loose fitting helmet. The small I choose online is loose enough people would say I needed an extra small (the one I choose doesn't come in extra small and has features I'd like to keep in my price range) but the smalls I tried on at the cycle gear store with the salespersons help were way too tight. The extra smalls would be a nightmare. I figure I need no more possibly less than 1/8th of an inch of extra padding all around. They do make foam padding kits as Fit Kits for helmets but they are 1/2 of an inch thick.
first tip sadly doesnt work for me. the chin strap on my arai xd4 is so short this doesnt work and i have do undo it every time... its literally 2 or 3 inches shorter than on every other helmet with the double d ring strap ive seen so far
Needless to say D ring straps have come a long way since the last time I had to buy a helmet. (I had mine issued). Non the less, I don't have any fancy tabs or little red dome fasteners in any of my helmets.
Oh yeah, this video reminded me I need to find a better fitting helmet! Also, I didn't know that the D-Ring helmet strap were meant to stay looped... I've gotta try that out!

Hi, nice video! I was wondering if you have a tip in case of a wasp ending up into a fullface helmet. I have a "Scorpion" helmet and theses devil creatures flew directly into my front visor throuth the hole under my tchin. I just can't wear this helmet anymore until I find a way to secure it some how. Any idea ?
I tried the first tip but keeping the chin strap fastened made it too hard to really get the cheek pads out of the way and not smash/fold my ears when putting the helmet on. Granted the cheek pads are a bit tight. Might work for a different helmet.
@@reddymon I'm happy it only took me 45 years to learn that about the D rings. But I would swear the old helmets did not have that long of a strap. I am going to have to go in the attic, I think I have my first helmet somewhere up there.
One thing I question though ..the padding between the helmet shell and your head is there to cushion your head in case of impact of the helmet with another surface. I have to suppose there is actually some design engineering that goes into it ...how thick, what durometer, where the vulnerable parts of the wearer's head (and neck!) are. They have to design it to meet certification standards. If someone goes in, willy nilly cutting away padding to create air channels, it seems they are altering the fundamental design of the helmet in a manner not foreseen by the designers. We pay a lot of money for high end helmets that meet standards such as DOT and Snell; I am not prepared to substitute my judgement for the helmet manufacture's for what is adequate padding to meet the standards. My thought was that you may see an increased chance of the helmet rotating backwards on pact, and having edge of shell strike your spine or something (as opposed to just bending it...I know). I don't know that it did anything bad...but I also don't know that cutting air channels in the padding didn't do something bad.

i have a new SHOEI GT AIR 2, large fits perfect when it’s on, light weight, and quiet, love this helmet BUT it’s causing redness and pain from the friction and folding my ears when putting it on mostly, and a little when taking it off. i’ll have to give my ears some time to heal before attempting to wast this helmet again. did you have this problem? what did you do, and what can i do ?
I have noticed on my ADV helmet that I cant see the peak at all with my eyes. So basically it is useless to block mud or the sun, but it does a good job at looking cool and catching wind.
I've noticed they are really small on adv helmets, Maybe you could get a visor off a proper motocross helmet and mount it to your adv lid. I've got the bell MX9 and the visor works great to block the sun
@@streetrider11 I have an Bell MX-9 Adventure, but I can only see maybe a 1/4" of the of the peak when it is on. And it is also in the lowest position. Maybe its just the shape of my head. On my true motocross helmets they are much lower and do a much better job and seem to catch about the same amount of wind, but are a much louder.
I’ve been resisting the emergency medical info for years. I guess it’s about time. I’ve always said before I am always still conscious. That was true till my last motocross crash. I guess I can be knockout after all. ✌🏻
I have been putting electrical tape on my helmet for yrs. I put two strips on side by side starting at the top of the visor . makes about a 1 1/2 " wide strip of sun block. it stays on permanently
To prevent your ears from folding simply use a balaclava - Problem solved! AND it is beneficial to the hygiene (keeps your helmet interior longer clean).

Look for little reflective ICE (In Case of Emergency) tags. They are usually for workers hard hats. I run one of these on the chin of my helmet.

Excellent advice on all! Did not think of the tape will be using that. I have a wrist EM info so no worries about putting that on the helmet.

From what I understand "dirt sport visors" were not invented to block the sun but block when roosted.
