    I just bought a 16 inch MacBook Pro. The only reason I opted for Macbook over XPS was the battery. Otherwise, I'd still be a Windows user. Yeah, this is my first MacBook and I like it.

      First time macbook user here as well. Only reason why I got my m2 max was because my boss gifted me one.
      At first I really don't like it. But learned to love it now 😂 I'm not even sure if I'm willing to go back on windows.
      1. Only complaints about Mac are most premium apps are subscription based.
      2. Keyboard is painted and not injection moulded.
      3. Expensive 😅 I'll probably get a macbook air once this m2 max gives up on me. Although I really wish there's a macbook air version with fans that's not gonna put a hole on my wallet.

      @@helbertgasconthey release the old macbook pro 13.3 with fans and even bigger battery than the air with the regular m1/m2 chips too atm. These provide even better battery life since its bigger but comes at the drawback of a older screen, 720p webcam, no MagSafe charging

    Love the Comparison. Though I am a HUGE Mac fan, Im glad Dell is catching up. I still have an old Dell laptop that runs (though not well). My one issue with your tests - no dont this personally boys - is that you often leave the windows machines plugged in. These are laptops. The whole purpose is for them to be portable and NOT be plugged in. So I wouldn't even give the stats for Windows machines plugged in because it's somewhat misleading. Anyway.... You guys always do a great job and I love your channel!! Keep it up boys!

      Most other reviewers would show plugged in results for windows as well. Maxtech used to do more unplugged test but it’s too heavily favored towards the arm chip. But this gen of intel and Nvidia is surprisingly good unplugged in shorter burst. Kudos.
      Definitely unplugged the m2 pro is still more desirable. More battery and will put up a good fight or could even beat 13th gen intel and nvidia 4070. Did not mention power limits for the 4070 but I reckon should be lower spectrum, could be 80w. Good thing about maxtech is they do the test on the spot, unlike most reviews with slightly older data sets.

      They are about even. The xps has better keyboard, screen, and lighter in weight. The mac has better mouse pad, and calibration of display out of box. Both have a premium feeling build quality. Windows 11 better for many power users working with many files. Both have their os quirks, just different. Huge one for Mac is that it does not have the infamous issue with windows where if you first close lid, then unplug, sometimes will drain your battery.
      Windows nicer for 4k displays, but ever so slightly.
      The biggest difference is battery life. Xps only gets 2 or 3 hours real world on battery running visual studio with large projects, and for photo editing. In a year or two intel will catch up in this dept, but in the interim this is the deal breaker if you work unplugged.

    As a musician who mixes music: The Xps just applied a specific EQ curve to the output. Exaggerated the 2K-3K range. That’s what the human ear focuses on for loudness. As a result that piece of music you were playing is not sounding as the artist intended to. They would be shocked how exaggerated the high mids are.
    The true representation of that music was how it sounded on the MacBook.
    The XPS cannot deliver bass well. They either cut it out to get more loudness and on top of it they exaggerated the high mids. It’s just an EQ curve and you think it’s louder.
    The camera is better of course on the Macbook.
    Apple Silicon made the windows world to get to work and they have caught up in many areas as performance but the battery life suffers.
    If not for Apple Silicon they would’ve needed 10 years to get here with the drip performance advancements every year.

    The biggest issue I have with newer macbooks is you can’t replace the ram or the hard drive. Once the SSD hard drive is worn out, you have to replace the entire MacBook Pro motherboard, or replace the mac. That is the only reason I decided to pass on buying a MacBook Pro.
    With the newer Dell XPS notebooks I’ve seen the insides of, the hard drive and the ram was replaceable/upgradable.
    All SSD hard drives wear out after enough writes to the same memory locations, and because of that, they should be user replaceable.

    Nice review as always. I think it'd be interesting to try some longer tests....the Davinci export for example was over too quickly to see the thermal limitations of each device. I'd hazard a guess that the XPS would have throttled hard and the win to the MacBook would be much more pronounced. All the tests that you performed were quite bursty in nature, which I guess is how most people use their machines, but a number of people also use them for more sustained workloads - especially in this "pro" segment.

  •  ปีที่แล้ว +7

    NVIDIA has a huge installed base. No matter how many Macbooks Apple sells, it will never match NVIDIA in volume. So if you are a game or AI developer, it makes more sense to optimize for NVIDIA. But for Adobe and video editing tools, the Mac user base is more prominent. I don't think the scenario will change.

    • @bruxi78230
      @bruxi78230 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apple competes with Dell and HP, not really with Nvidia. You can't go into the store and buy an Nvidia laptop. It makes high-end components that go into a few laptops. So Nvidia is making a profit on one component while Apple makes the entire profit from selling the device.
      As a result here is reality in terms of revenue. Nvidia had 27 billion in revenue in 2022. Apple had 394 billion in revenue. In terms of profits Apple had 99 billion and Nvidia had 10 billion. Apple as you can see is massively larger and more profitable. Nvidia is a great company but currently a boutique compared to Apple. The reason Nvidia stock price has grown recently has to do with using their GPUs to run server applications for AI, which is not a market in which Apple competes.

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bruxi78230 I agree with everything you said. But the graphics benchmark measures the 4070 performance, which is better for games and AI related workloads than Apple for reasons I mentioned above. Dell and HP do not make GPUs. Apple and NVIDIA may not compete regarding complete products, but they do compete in GPU technology performance. So if you are planning to buy a laptop and have to choose between an Macbook and a XPS, which is the motif of the video, you should consider your workload. There is no silver bullet, one option that is better is every context.

    A much more even comparison than the Macbook Air and unsurprisingly both machines are pretty even in most areas. The battery life on the MBP is shockingly good considering its compute power. After the previous video I went and compared the MBA with a 13" Latitude or XPS13 and found them to be roughly on par both performance and price wise. I'm a Mac guy so I would take the machine that natively runs OSX, but in this sector of the market there are some good choices across the board (I have a Latitude for work, which works OK).

      agreed, and MacBooks also throttle on battery in some cases. Rosetta emulation is significantly slower on battery in my experience with my M2 Pro. As a developer I use Docker containers every day that are a mix of native arm64 and emulated amd64. On battery, the arm64 images perform roughly the same - but jeez the amd64 containers start chugging on battery. Its x86 Java program images in my case but my theory is since Rosetta is partially hardware, that performance is significantly throttled on battery since its nowhere near as efficient as native.

    It will always seem that Intel is catching up but that can be partly explained by throwing higher wattage at the job, and also the 18 month upgrade cycle which means at some points in their respective cycles, the Intels will have a years head start. Also, the M2 was really an M1+, the tock part of the tick-tock cycle, and missed out on the new GPUs which would have included RayTracing. The M3 Pro/Max/Ultras will be the de facto second-gen Apple Silicon M-chip, three years after the M1, which the M2 is based upon, so it could be argued that a 2020 Apple chip still fighting well against the latest and greatest 2023 Intel?
    The true test will be the 3nm M3s coming soon...

    • @cjeelde
      @cjeelde ปีที่แล้ว

      When Apple got M3 Pro/Max, Intel got also faster CPUs and Nvidia/AMD got faster GPUs.
      Here's my take on it...
      Apple's chips is mostly about less (electric) power and better battery life. It's not about "better raw performance than Intel+Nvidia". And it's also about control and profit: the SoC architecture means you cannot upgrade RAM and SSD after purchase, which means you have to buy a Mac with a better config that cost more which will make Apple earn more money. The control is that Apple can develop their chips only based on their own Mac roadmap.
      There's really Intel CPUs that's equal to Apple's chips in raw performance. Intel got 100s of CPUs. Some of them are really really good/fast!
      For - true average - users it doesn't matter if you got an Intel CPU or Apple M1/M2 std/pro/max/ultra. The reality is that the current Macs got no Intel options, so you have to go for Apple's own chips.
      And most users it's gonna be a very small difference if you got a Mac with M1, M2 or M3. When talking raw performance. The more pro user you are and the more of a work tool your Mac is, the more benefit with a newer and faster Apple chip.
      But of course, the M3 family WILL be really great for Mac users that got a Mac that's "too old" now and must be replaced with something newer.
      I need a new desktop Mac and I will probably go for Mac Studio M2 Max 32/2000. I think I cannot wait for M3 Max. PCs with Intel is not an option here. I don't care if there's some desktop PCs with better raw performance or lower price. I need Mac OS, period :)

      @kylebelle246 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cjeelde Apple chips have/had better raw power than Intel. apple chips aren't just about lower power. its about better efficiency which is a measure of both power usage and raw performance which Apple handily beats Intel at both. Nvidia is a different story tho, now while i do think apple still beats Nvidia in efficiency it still can't match since Nvidia isn't afraid to throw microwave oven levels of wattage at their GPU. (and to be fair they have gotten pretty efficient as well as can be seen with the 40w RTX 4070). oh also they need ray tracing to truly compete with nvidia

      Doubtful, raytracing is largely irrelevant until you have enough classical rendering horsepower that fhe performance hit is still playable. Apple simply can't compete with either AMD or Nvidia on GPU performance and raytracing support would just be a gimmick when your GPU can't even hit 1080p 60 on modern games. Even if the M3 somehow quadrupled GPU performance over M2 - they'd still be behind and it'd ruin the MacBook's efficiency. If Apple were serious about gaming they'd build a seperate machine from the Air/Pro line that was thicker and used a lot more power. It wouldn't be very on-brand for them though.

    Speakers should not be tested with bass-heavy pop music but with symphonic music, using passages that have widely contrasting loud and soft dynamics. A good speaker should have high dynamic range in soft passages and a lot of transparency in loud passages. A bass-heavy set of speakers often produces a compressed sound in which dynamics and transparency are lost.

    I just bought a MacBook last Sunday. As a long-time Windows user, I can say that the MacBook is a little bit better for me. Not only is it the most efficient laptop I have ever had, but it is also one of the most powerful without needing to be plugged in all the time. In fact, I only need to charge this Mac once every 2 days, depending on usage. So yeah, basically, my Windows laptop can never compete with a Mac when it comes to efficiency and battery life. I know that there are some Windows laptops out there with good battery life, but those are mostly Chromebooks and weak-performing laptops. So yeah, when you're looking for a laptop with a good camera, speakers, build quality, and privacy safeguards, Macs are there for you. I don't think I will be going back to Windows anytime soon. I hope Windows recovers soon. I'm also hoping that Intel or AMD will produce something as tough and efficient as M1/M2 chips.
