For years I've been complaining how radio stations keep cutting of the last solo on this track so I never get to hear the best part of this absolutely brilliant track - and now I find out DireStraitsVEVO does the same?! WTF? This track is missing the final (and best) minute - why on earth would you cut that off? The song was too awesome intact?
Lost my father to covid- he raised me to all this iconic music. It’s almost march 2024 and I still listen to every song. Brings me so much happiness and makes me feel closer to my daddy cool
"but you don't see too many faces...Comin' in out of the rain to hear the jazz goin down"...with that sly smile....what is the difference between a rock musician, and a jazz musician? A Rock musician plays 3 chords in front of 3000 people. A Jazz musician plays 3000 chords in front of 3 people....:)
To anyone who is remembering their dad listening to this tune......much love!! Here’s to awesome dads!! Earliest childhood memories include hearing this song. Am a grown man these days but miss my father every day - we played this song at his funeral. I take so much comfort in reading comments & remembering good times & knowing there’s others out there who have the same feelings for this song & for their father. Peace out & love to all. 🙏
No matter what part of the world you're from ( I'm from India ) what age you are ( I'm 63 ) music really brings people together. Whoever said ' if music be the food of love....play on ...! Really got it right.
How the hell did he write this song? Pure genius. Everything about this song is just perfect - vocal, lyrics, composition, recording, guitar & bass, drums, chord progression and even the title of the song "Sultans of Swing".
@Yeshuah757 He couldn't believe the audacity of the jazz band.. They were playing in a dive bar to an audience of 4 people.. I believe his exact words were something like "nobody playing in that band that night was a Sultan of anything let alone swing.." So the greatest rock and roll song ever written is basically making fun of a crappie dive bar jazz band with an ego complex..
search up john butler funky tonight... he's got bloody talent no offence to mark he's a great guitarist but he is only playing chords when he is singing
The problem with singing and playing is not about the chords, it's all abouth RYTHM. The right hand is what matters. If you pay attention, John Butler is always fingering a fast and repeated pattern when he's singing, except for a slower riff at some point. Nothing different than what Mark Knopfler is doing. They're both great musicians. Talent? I'd say it's more about practice till perfection. Also, Mark is left-handed but his right hand is incredible. Peace.

The band would be remembered dearly as long as the guitar exists on this planet
I love how they're so relaxed, really enjoying what they are doing.. I will never tire of this song.
I'd be honored if some Dire Straits fans would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal YT performance of ON EVERY STREET in tribute to the genius songwriting of Mark Knopfler. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Peace and stay safe in the '020s.

I can't get over how great of a guitar player Mark Knopfler is, it's second nature to him, like the guitar is a part of his body. Incredible to witness.
I can't get over how these assholes cut off the guitar at the end of the song what the f***

Indeed. A very deserved title

up there with the greatest guitar players of all time.
Because the videos are not uploaded with the enjoyment of listeners in mind. Pretty stupid.
Yeah, but still. It would've required extra effort to create this incomplete and inferior version. Why go to the trouble?
Calle Söderberg Yeah that's weird. I also noticed some of the riffs are a bit off tone.
Absolutely and completely agree Calle

I love how the guitar solo feels so clean and not over the top it really fits with the calm vibe of the song

To anyone who is remembering their dad listening to this tune......much love!! Here’s to awesome dads!!

How the hell did he write this song? Pure genius. Everything about this song is just perfect - vocal, lyrics, composition, recording, guitar & bass, drums, chord progression and even the title of the song "Sultans of Swing".
He walked into a dive bar in England, heard a band called the Sultans of Swing. Made an awesome song of it.
I like the “quotations” he plays that kinda match the story ifya get me

not everyone can play guitar AND sing like that, mark has a talent
search up john butler funky tonight... he's got bloody talent
no offence to mark he's a great guitarist but he is only playing chords when he is singing
Peace.

One of the best songs ever written. Much more Knopfler is self taught and with no training. Incredible.
Lyrics:
You get a shiver in the dark
It's a raining in the park but meantime-
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie, double four time
You feel alright when you hear the music ring
Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down
Competition in other places
Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound
Way on down south
Way on down south
London town
You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords
Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing
They said an old guitar is all, he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene
He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright
He can play the Honky Tonk like anything
Savin' it up, for Friday night
With the Sultans
We're the Sultans of Swing
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
"Goodnight, now it's time to go home"
Then he makes it fast with one more thing
"We are the Sultans
We are the Sultans of Swing"
BRAVO.
Inspired!
