I hated that I had to go to work that day, so my older brother recorded this entire concert for me on his VCR that cost $800 and was the size of an end table. Gotta love (and miss) the 80's.

I recently learned how emotionally heavy that day was for David, in particular. Not too long beforehand, his older brother, who he loved and looked up to a great deal, had taken his own life. I don't know how I'd be able to handle that kind of pain, and still do something amazing, like this concert. Major respect. (5/30/2024)

I did not know that, but I am sure that it added to Bowie's intensity. I know he sang "Heroes" for his son, but no doubt he was also thinking of his lost brother. The other "performance" that I enjoyed was the collection of German artists who sang "Nakt im Wind" in the shadow of the Kolner Dom. It was a powerful, gritty, honest song! I compare it favourably in opposition to the American offering, "We are the World" which seemed typically American self-centred, whereas the German song made the point about desert conditions, starvation, and the world's uncaring attitude very openly!
I’ll never get enough of the nostalgic feeling of an era I never lived in, and even if the footages are quite old you can still feel like you’re at the actual concert and it’s a mix of different feelings.
@@chantellelitmanen7896 That is true, I think that all of us have the strength to be a hero, one day, in one place, or maybe for one person...the kind of strength that comes from the heart.

Queen and David Bowie sets at Live Aid was absolutely beast. Queen definitely stole the show, but Bowie performed right after and held his own. Thomas Dolby was on as Bowie's keyboard and synthesizer. Best 1, 2 performances of both London and in Philadelphia combined. I remember watching live on TV in the US. 2 performers I would have love to see in person... Freedie Mercury and David Bowie. I tried to see Bowie and the Tin Machine at The Roxie in 89 but it was impossible. The Roxy holds about 450 people and there were like 5000 waiting outside to get in. Thank God I grew up in the 80's. RIP legends.

One of the most incredible performances ever. There is magic happening between the band and the audience. The hair on my neck still stands up all these years later.
I remember this so clearly i was hooking up with a girl that day for some fun if you get my drift & could not wait to see him & the Pretenders MUCH to her disdain ready for some action Ha , golden days.
Agree Joseph. Collectively, there is a consensus that Queen did the best set at Live Aid. I would not disagree with that. However, if there was one song that caught the moment and one individual performance that stood out then it was this incredible one of 'Heroes' by David Bowie.
Not to denigrate Queen's Live Aid performance in any way, but to me David Bowie was the best performance top to bottom, but especially this version of Heroes. That Rocket Man and Bad by U2 were the songs that stuck in my head the next day.
I totally agree ... I keep covering Bowie on YT as Space Boy ... sometimes it all goes wrong and the fans let me know ... I keep the car running now at the exit stage one ...
My bedroom walls were covered in posters of this beautiful, talented iconic legend. I watched this live! I’m 62 but still remember all of it. I am so lucky to have been alive at this time. Queen were also sensational. Rest in Peace David and Freddie. I doubt we will ever see your like again. ☹️
Diana, Princess of Wales 💎, is alive! Yes, and it’s time the world begins to awaken to this Truth and so much more. Not only is our beloved Princess still with us, but so is John F. Kennedy, Jr., Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and Lauren Bessette. There’s also a long list of celebrities and entrepreneurs including David Bowie, Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson, Robin Williams, Steve Jobs, and Whitney Houston. So, how does one account for something as unbelievable as this? Well, each person named above, and those whose names haven’t been revealed yet, have their own story, and soon you’ll be learning about it. However, in the meantime, here’s the short version. Each one of these people, at one point, entered into a worldwide witness protection program. Wondering what these individuals needed protection from? It’s something the likes of which the average man or woman has never been confronted with. Although it may sound funny, each one of us will eventually have a role in the “Big Picture,” too. What is it? We need to respectfully listen to their stories and begin to understand the “as yet, unrecognized threat” that humanity has been living amongst. Bottom line is that we must give these brave people an opportunity to tell their stories and face head-on the Truths that we’ll be given in order to protect our families and ourselves now and forever more. Best way for us to complete our responsibility is to have unwavering faith in our Creator, God Eternal. On the top of my «to do list before I die» I had «hear David bowie perform heroes live». I never got to experience that, and it really makes me sad. My dad went to four David Bowie concerts, the last one in 2004 and he promised me that next time he’d take me with him (I was 7 years old). And then he stopped performing, and there never Were a next time. I was so upset when he died, and I get sad every time I hear this song because it reminds me that I never will have the chance to se him.. rest in peace my hero❤️

But I also have the privilege in being able to listen to your music over and over again filling my head with your voice and lyric because you are a f*cking icon. And at least I can see you live online. Love you Bowie, hope you have a good time up there on mars.
I think it's fantastic that you are a teen and love Bowie as much as I do in my late 50s. It proves music transcends time and brings people together. More than being rich and famous, I think that's all he ever wanted to do. 🐺❤️
Amazing. Bowie singing one of his many iconic songs @ Live Aid.....one of the largest GLOBAL concerts , ever.. A VERY special & magical experience. Never to be replicated... I was so fortunate to see Bowie in concert in the 1980's in Houston , Texas with my friend Tahir .. We floated out of the venue after the show. We had been touched by someone special...
Queen fan here. This was a fantastic performance from David Bowie. And he had a ton of charisma. And was so down to earth. David Bowie. Hero. Legend. Forever.
"We could be heroes, oh we can beat them forever and ever, we're nothing, and nothing can help us" a song written near the Berlin Wall before its fall. apropos for now.
John Casewell he was the only one who could follow up Queen with his stature and charisma. Although it was hard to follow up Queen that day, they delivered a masterperformance. David will always be a hero nomatter what, but that day especially Freddie was the starman i think.
I'm a huge Bowie fan but this wasn't his best set. His band was unrehearsed and thrown together at the last minute. BUT this very up-tempo 80's version of "Heroes" is a big highlight of the day for me. Queen and U2 were on a whole 'nother level.

I'm gutted about this. Was a big fan of his work as part of Thomas Dolby's albums. Just awful.

Hi I'd bless, as we are watching he lives on forever
If I could go back in time, I'd push Bowie out on stage ten minutes before this while Queen was on so he and Freddie could sing 'Pressure' together. What a moment that would have been.
Actually there was a break of about 45 minutes between their performances if I remember correctly
YESSS
Mercury and May also did an acoustic performance towards the end of the night which would have been the perfect opportunity but it never happened.
@@triggertitan4336 Bowie probably appreciated it. I can't imagine any performer would have been excited about following that Queen performance.
Oh I got chills reading this...yes! yes! If only, if. But so very happy we have what we do have of these 2 most epic artists!
I hated that I had to go to work that day, so my older brother recorded this entire concert for me on his VCR that cost $800 and was the size of an end table. Gotta love (and miss) the 80's.
You quit your job for that ... 100
Everything about this is outstanding. The old Wembley looks iconic. No mobile phones. Bowie looks and sounds like a god.
We'll never see these times again.
You're right. We won't. I think about it often and it's sad.
Only Bowie could follow Queen.
For a nano second in time, we thought we could make a difference. At least we still have the music..
Of course there’s no phones around. Mobile phones didn’t come until until 30 years after

You certainly have great taste mate,
Have a great day !

@@Hockawr I wish I had your taste in music when I was your age. It's great that you're already able to recognize the value of an artist like Bowie. His music isn't always immediately accessible. Sometimes it requires repeated listens. Ziggy is incredible! If you haven't listened to it already, I'd highly recommend his early album The Man Who Sold the World. Bowie really liked that album.
I feel the same way. I never really cared to listen to Bowie’s music, but now i keep playing this song, Under Pressure, and Starman on repeat!
David Bowie .. The Legend .. forever in our hearts .. ❤X❤X❤X❤ .. You were our Hero

"I'd like to dedicate this song to my son, all of our children and the children of the world. " Then proceed to blow the fxcking place away. Just magic - the crowd and band together here.
I recently learned how emotionally heavy that day was for David, in particular. Not too long beforehand, his older brother, who he loved and looked up to a great deal, had taken his own life. I don't know how I'd be able to handle that kind of pain, and still do something amazing, like this concert. Major respect. (5/30/2024)

Celbrate life
It's the grief in life's experiences that made him such an incredible artist.
Oh my gawd fathers 😮 no way! Lost a couple of male friends to Suicide x just so sad x one was a work colleague, Steve Brown x to add insult to injury he took his own
Life on my birthday, 27th August x so I beat meself up, I invited him to a birthday, no pre birthday gathering with fellow church friends x just cant help but think if he.. *sorry* just so incredibly sad that Men still feel they can't talk to anyone to get the help they need, mental health is woefully under funded, understaffed and just awful xxxxx
Jesus Christ this man looks amazing in a suit...
He could wear the sh** out of anything. Dude was magical like that. 😎
He and Robert Palmer
And Bryan Ferry.
They called him the Thin White Duke --- someone with that moniker will look great in a suit

Where can I apply? :)
Agree Queen and Bowie were the best. But Cars were excellent. Watching now, every other band seems dated. Not Bowie though
I can’t accept he is dead. What a legacy.
Respectfully I understand, artist is thrown around so much now.......you know the rest....

I totally agree ... I keep covering Bowie on YT as Space Boy ... sometimes it all goes wrong and the fans let me know ... I keep the car running now at the exit stage one ...
David stole the show ! Hard to believe this was 37 years ago .

I didn't appreciate how good these times were when i was a teenager in 85. Very optimistic time, anything seemed possible.
It’s hard to describe how much I love Bowie. Legend doesn’t even come close. The greatest, ever.
Anthony fauci also ran that epidemic. Aids started o the disco scene with poppers a solvent that was used there a poison poisons and mal nutrition cause auto immune disease. The leading virologist wrote a book about fauci masking the tests for early hiv treatments by giving the test subjects 6 transfusions which hid the damage of the treatment and made it look like it helped. The book is called aids the deadly deception it's 500 dollars on amazon which would be how aids kills the poor as the poor can't afford to read the truth. When the first hiv treatments were found to be causing aids it was banned I the us and shamefully sold to Africa. Which makes live aid look like us funding that horrific genocidal act of selling aids causing hiv treatments to a struggling nation. What a great performance
All the talk that day was about Queen and U2 stealing the show but for me Bowie was right up there
John Casewell he was the only one who could follow up Queen with his stature and charisma.
Bowie or Queen will always be better than U2.
Queen and Bowie are a whole other level of performer than anyone else there. Bowie was the only one capable of following Freddie Mercury's powerhouse performance. May these two legends rest in peace; we shall never see their like again.
