DC's latest film, The Batman, was an absolute rollercoaster, showcasing the best of what Batman as a character can be. With its many positives, I wanted to hone in on one I found to be rather interesting.. Batman's perception as a vigilante and what that means to the people of Gotham. Is Batman justice? Is Batman vengeance? What is the Batman?

I love that this movie really tackles the issue of what it means to be Batman, for that Bat-signal to not be a warning to criminals, but a symbol of hope for the people of Gotham.
It doesn’t come up enough in Batman media, what makes Batman the superhero we all know and love is that he’s just a man. There’s only so many criminals he can beat up and he can’t possibly whack them faster than they pop up. But there is no limit to how many people one man can inspire. The Nolan films dealt with this, but they didn’t delve into the angrier side of Batman, the one that has yet to really learn this lesson. In Batman Begins, people love Batman, in this movie, everyone is scared of him, even the man he saves from a street gang at the start of the movie. And then at the end, he risks his life to go down to the people below and literally lead them out of the dark and into the light. His violence birthed the Riddler, so he has to change, he has to be different.

@7:25 echoes my exact thoughts on this movie. In contrast to the Snyderverse, this is a Batman that I can actually picture being in the Justice League because it understands & shows that Batman at the core is supposed to be a hero. Finally defeating the villains is all well and good but Patman’s priority shifting to making the citizens feel safe & being trusted & inspired by him in spite of Gotham’s treacheries is what should make him different from any generic ruthless vigilante. Like you mentioned, ending on scenes where Batman is saving people in small ways and not just the bombastic final punch to the villains is a stroke of absolute genius on the part of Reeves. Those scenes are so poignant & sincere & are proper coda to films like this where so often too many people come away missing the critical part of these superhero stories where empathy, humility, self-sacrifice, duty & kindness are valued; instead only salivate at just the violence. Genuinely the more I dwell on this film the more & more it rises in the ranks of not just my favorite Batman movies but favorite superhero movies in general.

The mystery is overwhelming at first, to the point of being white noise at times, and revelations can fall flat when you don't realize how personal they are to the characters; but once you know where Riddler is taking Batman, you can see how each riddle primes him for the psychological gut punch he delivers in the asylum scene. After that, the mystery is a fun ride through Batman's psyche and a compelling exploration of his self-image. Batman's reaction to the blow Riddler's mind games dealt him is just awesome to watch and inspiring.

      Let's hope so!
Batman, Spider-Man, Wolverine are some of my favourite male comic-book superheroes with mainstream appeal.
      They all deserve good movies.
Well, "Batman Returns" (1992), "Batman Begins" (2005), "The Batman" (2022), "Spider-Man" (2002), "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" (2018), "Logan: The Wolverine" all delivered.
      But I want more.
"V For Vendetta" (2005), "Watchmen" (2009), "Chronicle" (2012), "Joker" (2019), "The Batman" (2023) paved the way for an increasingly more psychological take on larger-than-life comic-book characters brought to the big screen.
There is much more to explore further down that line...
On the other hand, films like "The Mask" (1994), "Deadpool" (2016), "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" (2018), "Shazam!" (2019), "Birds of Prey" (2020) have proven that there is more than just one way to pair a more comedic/humorous take on superheroes/villains with creative originality and consistency of tone.
I would LOVE to see a really good Lobo (DC) adaption come into fruition, one that's both, cinematically great as well as true to the protagonist, style and tonality of the character's comic origins.
With Margot Robbie having acquired the movie rights to "Tank Girl", there might be yet more comedic comic character greatness awaiting us cineasts.
      Let's hope so.

It's extremely hard to beat Nolan's touch at directing movies, he is one of the best movie directors ever. But Matt Reeves did one of the most real takes on Batman, so stylized, but at the same time so raw that it's shocking. This is the ultimate bare-bones Batman, a dark, subtle detective.

I can't tell YET if this is my favorite Batman movie but the cast is definitely my favorite live-action iterations of the characters (esp Rob as Batman and Zoe as Catwoman) and I just love the arc that Bruce goes through in this movie. Seeing him realize that "Vengeance" shouldn't be who he is and finding his true calling during the 3rd act was so satisfying
EDIT: Not to mention the BANGER of a soundtrack, the cinematography, every frame looked like a piece of art, the general atmosphere of Gotham, and the amount of heart and emotion in the story. I've always loved the emotional aspect of the Nolan films and I'm SUPER happy this movie had that much if not more emotional depth. Visually the movie is fantastic but there some moments where it's so dark that your eyes actually hurt. The runtime is also a problem, the movie didn't need to be 3 hours long. But hey the movie was still great and even though I didn't like it as much as I hoped, I'm absolutely looking forward to where this all leads.

I must admit, I got a bit teary-eyed at the part here (7:27). Batman to me has always been a character that represents hope for those struggling through hardship. If he was known for vengeance, it would undermine the point of his crusade. He suffers so that he can make a meaningful difference, but he is also flawed and makes mistakes like everyone else. By the end of the movie, we see a Batman who is resolute towards a better purpose; not to perpetuate a system of violence that created the very conditions that allowed him to be the Batman in the first place, but to extend a hand to those struggling in their darkest moments. 10/10 video.

Batman is vengeance, but he's also empathy which is where so many iterations go wrong with him, (mostly the comics but sometimes in other media as well) Batman cares about the victims of the crimes, and in most arcs Batman losing that part of him is a bad thing and displayed as him going down a bad path, (BTAS/the DCAU being my favorite example of this)

This is one of the few Batman properties in a while that the brutality and cruelness of the character fits with the overall tone and dark setting of the story.
Instead of the atmosphere of the movie taking away or even contradicting Batman's entire direction, this film instead uses it to perfectly encapsulates what it means to be The Batman and what it symbolizes for Bruce far more than any film, movie, and tv show I've seen ever since The Dark Knight.
It's not just the writing too, the lighting, cinematography, soundtrack, and subversive mystery plot combined with a great character drama into Bruce Wayne's full descent into the angry Batman that hasn't done much to save Gotham from the rotting that has rooted itself into the very heart of the story.
Great job Robert Pattinson, and great job DC. The Batman is back.

    • @philbattiste9649
      @philbattiste9649 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Not only does the darkness, cruelty, and brutality fit, but it also helps to establish Bruce's character arc. Right from the start, it is abundantly clear that Bruce's lifestyle isn't healthy. He's pale and bruised, his eyes are bloodshot, and he barely eats or sleeps. Every day and night, he's haunted by his past because his actions in the present keep reminding him of it. And it doesn't just end with him. As the film says, kidnappings, robberies, and murders have all gone up in the time since his debut as Batman. So not only is he tormenting and destroying himself, but he may also be complicit in city-wide escalation of crime.

I thought this movie was surprisingly campy, but it somehow worked. There are humorous moments, like the thumb drive and other riddler moments, including the riddler basically acting like a live streamer. Look at Colin Farrell’s and Jeffrey Wright’s acting. In some scenes they just dial their acting way up, but it works as a sort of like a satire of classic noirs. Hell, even Batman’s silence in some scenes is played for mild comedy. There’s a certain level of camp there that gives the movie some extra charm and fun.

I want Robin so bad. I'm worried the studio executives at Warner Brothers won't let them use Robin in any movies because they are stuck in the mindset that Robin is "childish" and "Stupid" and "Unrealistic." But Batman NEEDS some type of sidekick in the field with him. The bat family makes Batman a more interesting character and we haven't seen him interact with a partner on screen in years. I have three thoughts for how they could give Batman a sidekick in the sequels.
      1. Do Robin, but instead of the "classic" look with the domino mask have him wear a modified version of the "Red Robin" costume that Tim Drake wears. That already solves half the problem because it makes his costume look more practical intimidating.
      2. Hold off on putting Dick Grayson in the field as Robin and just make a really good movie where Batman adopts Dick and has to learn to be a good father. Make it a father/son drama with the Batman stuff playing out in the background. At the end of the movie have Bruce finally realize that being a good father means letting his adopted son truly get to know him, and have him reveal the truth to Dick about being Batman. Then have Dick become Robin or Nightwing in a 3rd movie when he is 18 or older.
      3. If the studio executives can't be convinced to do Robin in any way shape or form, then make Cassandra Cain Batman's partner. They are already doing a movie with Barbara so she is probably off the table for Matt Reeves. Cassandra has a great origin story, and you could have Batman adopt her and raise her, which you can't relaly do with Barbara since her dad is still alive. If you use Cassandra you can do the "Batman learns to be a father" story without Dick Grayson. Plus Cassandra's costume is AWESOME and it would be great to see in live action.

Have Batman 3 with 17-18 year old Robin were Batman and Robin KICK ASS like a machine and maybe have him go away in the end or at least end his job as Robin
Then have Nightwing as an epilogue to the trilogy ;)
Maybe have after Batman 2 a Robin Spin off or not, that could be good

Also something that I haven't seen people mention as much is how both Gordon and Selina call Bruce out on his lack of empathy for the victims of the crimes he wants to stop. He is so black and white in his morality that even people caught in the crossfire that didn't necessarily have any other choice like Annika, are somehow deserving of being gruesomely murdered. Saving people is more a byproduct of his work rather than a goal in itself, which contributes to his failure to improve things in the city. We've never seen a Batman that cares so little about the people he is supposed to be protecting and by the end he realises that he must protect everyone for his mission to succeed. The movie really is incredible in how it explores a lot of themes that are taken for granted regarding the character.
