Loved the movie. It blew me away. Not perfect by any means but it's the first time it felt like the real Gotham and the real spirit of Batman were captured almost perfectly
I think it was heavy on mood and atmosphere and for many, this is what makes it good. For me, nailing down the milieu is not enough, it has to tell a story that's not too predictable. It was predictable for me, having seen Seven many times and it borrows from that. Perhaps Fincher may have done better with the material. Familiar with Reeves' work; he is good with a pared-down story like his old movies -- Let me in, Let the Right one in -- but for The Batman, the movie doesn't have scale or heft or even expanse, considering he's doing more than just a little neighborhood as milieu.
Batman acknowledging that “he can’t be everywhere and he must choose his targets carefully” was a standout moment for me. Idk why there was just something about it that made him feel even more grounded and believable.
The fact that he let them go after beating the daylights out of them just shows this even more, the targets he picked were the one that could most effectively spread the fear that he's trying to build through the criminal undeground of Gotham
The moment Batman becomes a hero is so beautifully clear. The entire film, he is the shadows. But when he realises he can actually help people and inspire people he leaves the shadows behind. He lights up a flare that destroys the shadows making him the light.
My favorite part of that scene is that he instantly jumps into action with selfless abandon. Then as he jumps down you can see the small cadre of officers standing wide eyed at seeing someone practically jump to his death in order to save the dark figures below. None of them knows if any of them are important people but someone trying so hard to save random is such a foreign concept in this world of Gotham that Reeves has developed sparks as much hope in those officers who want to be good as it does the people who came to that rally with the hope that Gotham can be better.
i mean i think he still is the shadows. striking fear into the eharts of criminals is his whole thing. his whole backstory. he was afraid of bats so he wants to strike that same fear in criminals as he was of bats as a kid. HE wants them to think twice before robbing. i loved the horror esc music for batman because that's exactly what it is for crooks. a horror movie
That last shot of Pattinson on the bike where you see all that acting in just his eyes looking at Selina and contemplating a future with her and then looking forward and reaffirming his resolve for the city as he speeds up gave me chills. Just what a masterpiece.
Ah, interesting take! I saw that scene as Bruce already for sure heading back to Gotham, but he just wanted to be with, near, or even simply looking at Selina for every last second he could possibly get with her, because she brought him that intimate comfort he'd been missing for so long. It felt like a very wistful, humanizing note to end on for this Bruce, considering how distant he is. Either way, VERY unique final shot for a Batman movie!! It could've so easily been just him standing over the city and gliding away. I'm glad they did something so different and so human, just like the movie as a whole.
I like how the movie shows how being a vigilante isn’t cool and exciting. It’s an exhausting, lonely and sad lifestyle. Bruce has become so consumed by his alter ego. He doesn’t even know how to be Bruce Wayne anymore. He’s more comfortable in the bat suit. Than he is in his own skin. It’s a fascinating take on the character that not everyone is gonna accept. But at least the director had the guts to try something a little different with this Batman.
Everyone is complaining about he's not being the Bruce Wayne they see in the previous movies. I think they didn't see the real point of being a vigilante who's thirsty for revenge
Not cool or exciting? Are you kidding? Have you seen all the criminals he beat to a pulp in this film? You're telling me that doesn't look cool or exciting? Of course there's danger involved as well. But it wouldn't be badass nor as thrilling without any danger or risk behind it.

Battinson and Gordon’s on screen chemistry honestly stole the show. I think R. Pats really knows how to bounce off his scene partners, in my opinion. He’s a great actor, himself, and he seemingly knows how to make it so that his energy doesn’t occlude that of the person who he’s sharing the screen with, but rather elevates both people’s energy levels. He just is good at portraying chemistry.
Tbh, it didn't steal the show as it was an essential part of the movie. It is a detective story, and both are detectives solving a mystery. The whole movie to me is an absolute masterpiece of acting, ambience, and dialogues, everything was so well connected, so tight, nothing was out of place imo!

The opening Halloween monologue at the beginning and the final monologue at the end made this movie perfect for me. Matt Reeves understands exactly who Batman is.
From the moment he lights the flare and leads the people out of the dark waters to safety, the rest was absolutely beautiful. The Nirvana reprise, Batman narrating about the city underwater, the national guard, martial law, and how the criminal element never rests, was some deep stuff. I was literally "in awe" and 500% invested. I hope they keep the Joker very minimal in the sequel and it seems like it's leading towards a Court/City of Owls and No Man's Land/Arkham City type story. Which is amazing.
There's two scenes in The Batman that really got me emotional. The part where Bruce tells Alfred that he scared to lose him. That he thought he mastered his fear, but the thought of losing Alfred makes him genuinely afraid got me in the heart man. Then there's the scene where we see how Bruce is really a good person because he tells Selina she doesn't have to pay with her father by killing him. The fact that he has a strong moral compass, and he knows that an eye for an eye is a vicious cycle that doesn't bring the victim peace says so much about Bruce. He's a good man deep down he just needs to grow.
Yessss the hospital scene was a great heart-to-heart, top to bottom. I also loved seeing the "no guns, no killing" Batman rear his head when Selina said they need to kill Falcone. I think he basically a line that the animated Jason O'mara Batman has said. "That makes you like them," to Damian Wayne. He also said "You can't fight crime by becoming a criminal" which is great. Not to mention the Red Hood dilemma! "If I let myself go down that road...I'll never come back." "You don't have to pay with him" is now one of my favorite lines among that collection of Batman anti-kill quotes. So well put. Revenge doesn't make anything better, it just stoops you down to their level so you become the thing you hate, it doubles all those horrible feelings instead of curing them, and possibly even causes others to want to get revenge on you back so the cycle never ends. Battinson is just the best live action Batman, man. I love him so much. He feels like the comics and cartoons and games brought to life.
My great grandfather passed away last month and I'll always remember him grabbing my hand tight in the bed as I sat next to him... I'll never forget that, and that's all I could think of in that scene, legit got emotional. Andy Serkis was incredible in this movie and he really brought the best out of Pattinson in every scene.
I like the fact that it wasn't "I have one rule" shit when it came to stopping Selena from killing Falcone or the corrupt cop. He wanted to save her soul (essentially), because in this "universe" what she would have done may be a positive (removing the corrupt elements that perpetuate the corruption) for Gotham but not for her. There's an emotional reason why Batman stopped her. Which is good, because Nolan's "I don't kill" is bullshit in his own films. Batman doesn't MURDER, he manslaughters a bunch. He manslaughtered the shit out of the league of shadows members before they did anything bad. I find the deployment of the not killing creed in 'The Batman' to be much more effective than Nolan's version because of this. It's not cut and dry, it's nuanced. EDIT: Also that scene with Alfred is the scene that shows Batman needs to use the 'mask' to protect those he loves, and he didn't realise it till that scene. It's good, it explains why he doesn't do playboy bullshit (which is dumb cause theres only 2 billionaire playboys that exist so how is that a cover?).
I love how he didn’t say directly, “I’m afraid of losing you.” Instead, he says he hasn’t mastered the fear of losing those he cares about and takes Alfred’s hand. Bruce cares deeply but he is a man of action. He’s socially inept as the millionaire Bruce Wayne and even to those he is closest to as seen by some of the tense scenes with Alfred. Even with Selina and Gordon, he states subtle nods to his feelings like when he and Selina say goodbye he says, “Take care of yourself.” With Gordon, he tells him he’s a good cop. These carry so much subtext and weight given who this Batman is. It’s lovely. He’s an orphan, isolated, angry, sad. He’s still that little boy in the alley, born in the shadows, only now learning that shadows only exist because of the light.
Matt Reeves explained in an interview that while making The Batman he understood why none of the other filmmakers tried to do a detective Batman before, because it's extremely hard to make it entertaining as a movie
Sebastian Castenada,I think you didn't understand The Watchmen.The Watchmen is film that shows the complexities of humanity in a world superheroes .Dr Manhattan is basically a god but he's seen as humanity's last hope to end a war ,Ozymandias is a genius who's arrogance precedes him and created a bomb to wipe out humanity.And I can go on and on.But Watchmen is an underrated great film.
I don't understand some of the criticism that the film is "joyless". That bit at the end where Batman was pulling people out of the rubble, in the day, with the military and other first responders made me feel the most inspired I've ever been in a Batman movie. When that woman reached for him, I just got so emotional.

i guess hope isn't the same as joy tho. i do think the movie has little by way of joy, by way of any of the characters enjoying their lives and such. it is very focused on how hard their lives are. not a criticism, just an observation.
I personally believe the “I am vengeance” theme is a foreshadowing of the future trilogy. The second film will explore “I am the night”, and the third film will bring the franchise to a full circle by establishing “I am Batman”
I love the detail of Bruce picking up the little boy out of the water essentially picking himself up. I think this is my new favorite comic book movie I literally had my jaw on the floor almost the whole 3 hours.
i hope the kid figures out who he is. he knows the story of bruce wayne and saw Bruce looking at him at the funeral and Batman looked at him the same way after his dad died. could be kinda like the TDKR where Blake recognized the same anger he had in Bruce.
No, not a little boy. It was a young woman. He holds her hand until the last possible second to ensure her that it's going to be okay. One of the most beautiful moments in the movie.

I love how he shifts his purpose from being vengeance to being a symbol of hope. When one of riddler’s followers calls himself “vengeance” just like Batman, it makes him realize his inspiration to others hasn’t been a 100% good thing. When riddler expects Batman to go along with his plan after explaining it in Arkham Asylum, or how Selina expects Batman to help her take down Falcony, they are seeing Batman as nothing more than vengeance. By the end of the film he has become a sign of hope in Gotham more than a sign of vengeance, especially seen when he helps those trapped by the flood with his flare lighting the way as a beacon of better things to come.
People are actually missing the plot of the film and seeing that big picture. Every critic has just nit picked and compared it to Nolan’s trilogy which is a different take on the character. They critic this because it’s not the superhero cliche film they’re used to but if it was they’d hate that too.
@@lethalassassin1754 Nolan’s isnt that either, but I think you are correct; they aren’t ready for superhero movies to be anything but either campy or super intense and complex; this story isnt complex in my opinion unlike Dark Knight which leaves a lot open to interpretation. Batman in this has an obvious development in character whilst also being the obvious winner (for now), but nobody can comprehend superhero movies being good as noir detective films.
I think that that realization that he needs to also be a symbol of hope isn't limited to Batman but also to Bruce Wayne which is why they had the scene with the mayoral candidate talking about needing to change Batman
One of my favorite scenes in this movie was Batman's escape from the Police station. When he gets to the rooftop and is about to leap that momentary look of fear in his eyes right before he gathers his balls & leaps was a genius decision. It showed how alot of what was going on was new to this Batman and how at the end of the day he's just a man. The word that kept coming to my mind the entire time watching this movie was MASTERPIECE. Can't wait to see it again.
The Riddler was a terrible villain, the last sequence in the movie completely 180'd his motives and made no sense. Also the whole Falcone plot was just lame. This movie was insanely overhyped and overrated like the new spiderman. Not even close to a masterpiece

The last scene in which Batman tells Selina “take care of yourself”, damn you can see the pain in Batman’s eyes. Just for once, he falls for someone, and had to sacrifice what he loved for Gotham, to repair the broken city as he has faith in it.. the writing and emotion in it is on the next level.

This version of Batman isn't interested in putting on the billionaire playboy persona yet. His only focus is being Batman. That's why even in the funeral scene he doesn't say much and barely responds to anyone because he's a man on a mission. But it'll be cool to see him evolve into a more traditional Batman that manages the public image of Bruce Wayne.
very true. this movie doesnt explore batman origin because everyone pretty much knows it all already. instead, it explores his first few years as batman, probably coming back from his training with ras al ghul (which is equivalent to the training in vengence). In his first few years he is still fighting crime for the sake of fighting crime with only a simple morality of no-killing. Bruce wayne isn’t here yet, thats why he doesn’t appear in the movie, there is no playboy philanthropist persona because he hasn’t realized it yet. This is also the reason why the character development is this movie is actually quite faithful to batman origin.
I like how this Batman really shows that he is still young and still struggling with being Batman. From his ways of crime fighting, ways of balancing his 2 lives, and to his gear. Every ounce of it screams that he is just new to this and has a long way to go.
why does it have to be "yet"? why can't he just have his own personality, like michael keaton's bruce wayne? as it is, if anybody ever had good reason to suspect bruce wayne was batman, how much time would acting like an asshole in public buy him before a serious investigation began? the playboy persona is a pretty useless contrivance, and bruce wayne's end of the batman stories (in any medium/continuity) would be more interesting without them. think i'll watch batman returns again so i can see michael keaton fencing with christopher walken in the boardroom...
Not something I’ve seen anyone mention yet but Gotham felt super unique in this movie it felt super gritty, nasty but also full of life you could truly feel like every one on the train in the beginning or at their equivalent of time square had their own lives

This movie as a normal movie was good, as a batman movie it sucked. The people who love it, they love detective type movies in general. Real OG day 1 batman fans know this movie was trash and the director is a clown for what hes doing the batman legacy. Not the mention the terrible actor playing batman.

When Batman acknowledged that he needed to do more after realizing he was the inspiration to Riddler's vengeance, it kind of hit my soul deeply. Because I never really thought that anybody could portray an idea that a violent vigilante, dressed in an all black bat suit, could potentially inspire some sick and twisted minds. And when he admits that maybe he isn't doing enough to distinguish himself and /or make it obvious that he's an honorable, honest guy trying to help, I really thought, "Wow, he is really unable to control who or what he is inspiring." I can't wait to see who the villain is in the next film and how he is handled. Riddler's character development was epic!
Many of the darker Batman stories show that Batman creates all his villains, some even being close friends with him before they turn to crime, like Two Face or Clay Face in some iterations. And because Batman knows this, he feels a heavier burden to make sure they are taken care of, not just killed, even though he fails constantly and putting them in Arkham is never a permanent solution. The Dark Knight touches on this a little bit, but doesn't go as deep as this series will go, I think. In TDK, the joker says "You complete me" and lets Batman know that "To them, you're just a freak like me" which is done in a more complex manner in The Batman, when Riddler believes that Batman and him were "working together as a team." It may also be implied that The Joker was possibly created by Batman in the new series due to the deleted scene that was posted on youtube.
I don't want to shut you down because I agree with you but if you want to see this idea explored elsewhere, the Daredevil TV show touched upon this. It was during season 2 which has decidedly the worst season of the show, but Daredevil's crusade is implied to inspired that of the Punisher.
I think the reason filmmakers haven't leaned on the detective angle is because good mysteries and detective films are extremely hard to pull off well, look at Se7en no one apart from Fincher could've pulled it off so well. Just my opinion...I don't wanna say Nolan or Snyder or Burton are bad filmmakers, they just played to their strengths (philosophical dilemmas, epic action and dark atmosphere respectively) Reeves did the impossible, he made Batman not just cool again but also frightening...

I liked it. It was alott different from what I have seen before with the Nolan Trilogy and Burton's. I don't want to compare it with other Batman movies but wow what a great time I had watching this.
I like how the Riddler was literally the only character who'd call him Batman throughout the entire movie. Well, he was his idol after all, the riddleman even went so far as expecting Batman to join his side because of how similar they were in terms of vigilantism. Thus, Edward Nashton was the only foe that actually took Batman seriously and not out of fear, but respect...
I felt weird coming out of the theater and thinking to myself that my absolute favorite Batman movie couldn't be the most recent. That place surely has to belong to an established classic like The Dark Knight, right? I shouldn't make such a bold statement even to myself, and was just riding the rush of having just experienced it, and it would eventually fall to its real spot without my own personal ranking. But as the days went by and I found myself still thinking about it, still wanting to go watch it again, still remembering details and finding in them new ways in which it was such a masterpiece, I'm starting to realize this might actually be, indeed, my favorite Batman film.
The take on the bat symbol in the sky was perfect, to instill fear in enemies' heads. To attack anywhere when he can't be everywhere. The meaning of the shadows. So good.
The ending of the movie is easily my most favorite scene in the entire film. Batman escorting the citizens out of the water, and carrying a girl to safety. And his whole line about giving hope to the city instead of just being a vengeful vigilante. That, to me, was peak Batman.
I can listen to that first narration monologue every day honestly. And I love the last scene score with cat woman and Batman going their separate ways literally and in terms of their moral compass. It was so sentimental to me. Kindred spirits who can’t be together cause of their trauma.
watched it twice already, my only complaint is it couldve been just a BIT shorter but thats just nit picking. I think people who are hating are still comparing it to the nolan films and are dark knight fan boys, the second time watching it I went it with nolans movies completely out of my mind and enjoyed this even more. Looking forward to see how future movies and how pattinson develops bruce wayne in the sequels
Right?? I can't really think of any scene that could be completely cut (other than Riddler and Joker in the asylum). Any pacing problems were simply scenes that were a bit indulgent or dragging their feet. Other than that, every scene did have a purpose. In my eyes, the Nolan trilogy was always kinda like "the best we had" in terms of a grounded realistic live Batman, but now that we have Reeves' Batman, dare I say it I can barely imagine going back. This might possibly completely blow The Dark Knight out of the water for me. It feels *so much more* Batman-y to me. TDK feels so...sterile now. Batman Begins was always my favorite Nolan Batman film because it was a grimier, emotionally driven story for Bruce, and "The Batman" was exactly that. This is what Batman's been missing for so long. Though I will say, Bale's playboy Wayne facade was always a treat, and that seems to be the only major issue people have with Pattinson's Bruce, that he was so mopey and antisocial, but I loved that. He is younger after all. I wonder where this Bruce will go? Robert going to the levels of Bale's playboy would be so funny to see, but I think he'll most likely do quiet philanthropy after Gotham's flood, which may put his secret identity back in jeopardy.
@@RacingSnails64 for me begins is my favourite Batman from the Nolan trilogy. Dark knight is my favourite story. This new Batman has my favourite atmosphere/mood/cinematography. I won’t say it has my favourite Bruce yet. I’ll wait until the sequels to see how they develop it

I don't think that he was saying that she was apathetic towards everything, just about Gotham's problems. She doesn't care if Gotham's corruption gets cleaned up, which is apathy. That's okay. We don't have to feel something about everything. It's normal to direct our passion to the things we care about and ignore the rest and that's what she does. I think it's only brought up in this video to contrast how Batman feels about Gotham.
This film is very much a film lovers film, on first viewing I thought it was very good but after watching a few videos and reading peoples comments I feel the need to see it again, there are so many hidden details in the depths of this film that make it so impressive
It seems to be going in the Earth One direction as well as hopefully Court of Owls/City of Owls (Talon would be amazing in this universe) as well as No Man's Land/Arkham City. That will be utterly amazing
I binged all the Marvel movies last summer but this pulled me in like no other superhero movie. I’m biased because I’ve loved Robert Pattinson for 14 years lol but because of that I’m incredibly interested to learn more about the universe aside from what I knew as a kid, watching the tv show because my brother and dad loved it. I’m so proud of Rob, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they see an influx of new female Batman fans 🤣
And rightfully so. Robert Pattinson is a character actor on par with Christian Bale. And finally a character actor is given the chance to play a Batman/Bruce Wayne role that does the complex character from the best DC stories justice: He can swing a bat, he can move in the shadows like a bat, he can bare-knuckle-fight multiple armed thugs at once, solve riddles, investigate stealthily, calculate risks, take risks, project fear, give comfort, reign himself in and let loose as the situation requires, and yet he cannot deal with his childhood trauma in an emotionally grown up and healthy way, but nevertheless he manages to recognize both the damage he has taken and the damage he has dealt, takes responsibility for his actions and accepts the hard truth that although it might take a sociopath to take out a sociopath, to "simply" do so is not enough by far, neither to become a happier person nor to make the world a better place for humanity. But he makes it his duty to try the latter over the former. Thus he will always soldier on and continue to live on the keenest edge, that thin line between outlaw and law keeper, genius and madman, victim and perpetrator, misanthrope and philanthrope, anti-hero and hero, peace keeper and violence seeker, do-gooder and bad-ass, altruist and ego tripper, dealer in justice and in vengeance, disciplined and paranoid, well-balanced and outrageous, reactive and proactive, a very human and turmoiled soul, a self-controlled, fearless and invincible "superhero" at first sight, a very driven and fearful and scarred person on second notice. Welcome to the fandom!

This is why I love batman. To me he is the most complex fictional character and I love how some people are criticising the lack of Bruce which shows this is the deepest batman we have gotten, in films. Comics we know how complex he is and his other characters . Robert Pattinson is the batman
I love that the only moments where Batman appears is at night and he's bruce during the day, i also love how much he uses the dark to his advantage and how he always reveals himself by stepping out of the shadows
I feel like this is the Batman film FOR batman fans. Where, Nolan’s trilogy was the Batman films for general audiences.. with the typical marvel movie formula… villain causes havoc in Gotham, batman fights villain.. rinse, wash and repeat. THIS Batman is FOR Batman fans.. not the general audience… Gotham itself is the best portrayal of the city BY FAR and Pattinson played the character with such rawness and emotion it’s the most comic faithful batman thus far. I could see why a lot of general audiences don’t like it.. due to its darker tone, complex story and length. But for me, it’s now my favorite batman film. 10/10
While I buy and large agree with what you're saying, I wouldn't necessarily call Nolan's trilogy a "marvel formula" set of films. They're incredible unique and game changing. I would say It more so has to do with the fact that The Batman leans heavily into detective fiction and noir and is overall a "slower" paced film that may not be for everyone. That being said, yeah...this is the Batman from the comics through and through!
I agree with Nolan trilogy being more pleasing to general audiences. It has more action blockbuster tropes and also an element of disdain for the sillier aspects of comics due to being obsessed with being serious. The Batman is strangely more grounded and less superhero-y yet is more stylised and embraces the comic book material more.
Just like Heath Ledger, who doubted him for playing the role of Joker, Robert here totally nailed it I just hope they made a part 2 of him evolving his role of Bruce Wayne being a billionaire play boy.. but no Robin yet, I want to focus on him improving his role I admit that I'm one of the people who doubt him
I adored it. It felt so refreshing to see a superhero movie that actually felt like a standalone film and not an episode of an extremely expensive Disney show. I love the MCU, but it’s getting bland. I love what they did with Batman‘s character, having him figure out in this movie that to be a symbol for Gotham, he can’t just be a vigilante brutally beating people, but a hero, people need. I think his trilogy has the potential to be the best Batman trilogy, and may be one of the best superhero trilogies ever. I’m very excited to see where the future goes for Robert Pattinson‘s take on the character, and I can’t wait to see the villains and other characters in the sequel. I thought that directorial style by Matt Reeves was just phenomenal. Incredible Director. Makes me want to go rewatch his planet of the apes trilogy. And Colin Farrell contacted great as the penguin. I’m sure his show on HBO Max will be great, and fill in some gaps so that the Batman two won’t need to. Batman has some of the most interesting supporting characters ever, so it makes sense making that aren’t solely based around him. I think in the next few movies we’re probably going to see Batman, and Bruce of all to become more Accustomes to the public eye. The Batman was great 9.5/10, sequel gonna bang 🔥
I find comments like this odd. Man of Steel, the entire Nolanverse, Unbreakable were all movies that functioned as stand alone films. And depending on your view excellent ones.
Annnnnnnd .... THIS is precisely why I want to see the masterpiece that Reeves could potentially bring us by fully exploring the Scarecrow as the tier 1 villain he is and how he would interact and relate to the Batman. FEAR. Seeing this explored through Reeves vision would be spectacular.

I love Ben Affleck as Batman but I'm just going to go be honest. Don't think his Batman movie would have been as good as this. His movie from the leaks focused on Deathstroke and full on heavy action. While that's great, it's the same Batman as always. We've never seen Batman actually be a detective properly in a previous movie before. I'm glad his movie didn't happen because we wouldn't have gotten this ambitious detective noir thriller, entirely focusing on Batman being a detective.
Batfleck deserved better. I think Ben sees at least one little "F you" silver lining even for his haters, and that's the warehouse scene which will likely always be the best Batman love action scene in history.
Getting a serious character study film rooted in genre honestly kind of made Nolan's films feel like toys of the real thing... which is this. I love comparing things. Nolan's films are great... 2/3 at least. But those films were impactful ideological thought pieces sold by great acting performances, the setting and characters really didn't get the attention the ideas did. Not to mention, Nolan's films were very motivated by structure and iconography, whereas this movie is driven by pure cinematic prowess, editing, pacing, lighting, framing, blocking, visual metaphors, thematic coding, everything you can think to list. It's a perfect 10/10 movie. It bulldozed every other super hero thing I've ever been impressed by. I think the only thing remotely as cool was Netflix's Daredevil.
Everyone saying the scene when Batman leads the people is their favorite but my favorite scene is when he wakes up in the police station and literally rages. I’ll never forget how hard he punched Gordon 🤣
I have to still go with Batman Begins but only because it's too recent for me to pick this one yet. The Dark Knight is a very close second place to Batman Begins/The Batman as my favorite. All 3 are flawless to me

I just watched the movie, dude, EVEN THE BATMOBILE WAS SCARY. I'm not a big Batman fan, but man, this ended up being my second fav super heroe movie! First one being Spiderman 2.
This was a shining moment 👌. Lovely photography, clever riddles, greatest batsuit and batmobile ever put to film and great acting from everyone involved. The hommage to noir films and detective origins of Batman were truly needed. Closest mood to Mask of the Phantasm which in my opinion remains the greatest Batman movie ever.
This movie was hands down one of the best depictions on Batman. I loved the way they actually made Batman a detective. I still do wonder where he learned how to fight. I believe Alfred taught him, but wasn't he trained by the League of Assassin's Ra's Al Grohl?
I like how Bruce *wasn't* the World's Greatest Detective in this movie yet because he's still a little green, ultimately Gordon and Bruce are both incorrect a lot and kind of lose against the Riddler overall though they stop him from accomplishing some of his goals. This doesn't mean the movie suffers from Batman being incompetent since he clearly is not incompetent, he's just still young and not at the heights he one day will be.
Idk if anyone else caught it but one of my favorite part of this movie was when he was about to leap with his wingsuit but had that hesitation because of the height. I loved the little details showing he's a new Batman on his second year. This movie was nothing less than amazing!
i love this movie so much, it actually made me become more interested in batman as overall. I can't add much since my knowledge of batman is really limited, but I just want to say that the scene between Bruce and Alfred in the hospital never fails to make me cry. I saw the movie 10 times, and each time I felt tears streaming down my face when Bruce was talking about fear etc to Alfred. The Batman's Bruce is just a broken man bottling his emotions up and devoting himself to try and save the city that took his parents away, only to be 'baptised' and born again (symbolised by the scene where he leads the people to safety at the end).
After rewatching The Dark Knight today, The Batman is my favorite live action batman movie and Robert Pattinson is my favorite Batman. TDK will always hold a very special place in my heart like all other batman movies, yes event the George Clooney one but this is The Batman for me. There's just something about it that really remind me of reading the comics and watching the animated series growing up, it felt like I was reliving how I fell in love with Batman in the first place. Hell after seeing the movie i sat down and rewatched year one and a bunch of other animated batman movies and this film just captured everything I love about this character. Not only was he violent enough but also the way he looks at the boy at the beginning of the movie, it tells you everything you need to know about Batman as a character in less than 15 minutes. He understands pain, and will stop at nothing to make gotham a better place. It's a beautiful movie, well acted, great score, and the set design mixed with well done practical effects has me itching for more.
First time I watched this didn’t hit me that hard. But I just rewatched it a week ago and genuinely started tearing up at the end. Especially when Batman is carrying the girl to helicopter stretcher and she holds on to him. Really almost started bawling there lol. Really love the juxtaposition between the first innocent person he interacts with and the last.
I've got to say, with the darker kind of film making that reeves is going for, I'm excited to see different rogues. I can imagine scarecrow and joker in particular being incredible characters in this darker style.
The detail and care put into this film is exceptional. Despite the three hour run time I really couldn’t find a scene they could cut out or one that felt like an extra because every moment had me wanting more. They really chose the right moments that added nicely to Batman as a character. I love how he has a real and fresh character arc in this one. Also, I like how Pattinson acts with his eyes. It’s amazing what he can convey with very little lines. Everyone in the cast had great to amazing performances.
I loved how the action felt purposeful. So often in superhero movies it just feels like they add action scenes to keep the viewer interested. The action was brutal, gripping and dangerous. Batman fought in a flawed desperate manner. He fought angry almost suicidal in the positions he put himself in. Each action scene was purposeful until the climax. This movie was beautiful.
I had some reservations about Robert Pattinson of playing Batman, but I've never been happier that I was wrong. That beautiful man made a home run and won my heart. Batman is my fauvorite hero and constant inspiration so when the perfect Batman movie comes I am overjoyed. The first scene where we see the Batmobile is AMAZING! I laughed a nervous laughter because my body could not handle how cool and menacing it was.
To me this was the best adaptation of Batman and the most comic accurate I enjoyed every minute of it, the ending where Batman realised he’s no better than the criminals he’s fighting was an amazing moment

I love your opinions on this! I thought this movie was almost perfect! I really like how Bruce and Batman are pretty much the same because he doesn't know how or doesn't care to be Bruce Wayne, there's only Batman with him, he hasn't made the mask of Bruce Wayne.
This film was damn near perfect. Every scene advanced the plot. No wasted motion. I do have a few little gripes but with some things they are entirely miniscule compared to how much I loved this film. Shit, I could watch it with the sound off and still have a good time. The cinematography is just beautiful. Rob absolutely crushed it as Batman. Dano deciding to go full Zodiac was a bold, risky move that ended up working out in spades. Zoe is gorgeous and has fantastic chemistry with Rob. If this isn't the best Batman film ever made then it's at the very least tied for first

But in real life it’s like that. When so many of the elite class are so irredeemably corrupt, the laypeople cannot tell the difference between just another money laundering scheme from the very beginning, and a real effort by a genuine person who happens to be rich, only it didn’t pan out as he intended. One of the many, many little touches that make for realism in this movie.

Not just the fact that the opening monologue was wonderful, but the actual events in the beginning reminded me so much of Batman the Animated Series. The way he came out of shadows, the way they were scared to even look down a dark hallway, not to mention the music when he confronts the gang. Absolutely epic!
I wish the DC verse had leaned into this mood from the beginning tbh. Yes I really loved James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, which is the polar opposite of this film, but I also appreciate this film for being the other side of the coin of Marvel's redefinition of comic book film (brightly-lit, pop culture references, fan-service appearances, cool one-liners, after-credits scenes... I'm also a fan btw) if they had been doing that from the beginning of their revival, they would have had something so strong going in the face of the MCU's goliath.
I'm absolutely fascinated by what stories they can tell with sequels. I hope we get a Political-esque Penguin story, and something to do with Scarecrow or the Court of Owl

One also has to understand that like all kids who grew up in wealth, bruce is ignorant of systematic issues and stemming from inequality, wealth and corruption and power at the top. Cuz well he is in that circle so he sees bottom feeders as the issue and is living in the dark. The riddler also brings him into the light

as a villain lover, the riddler in this movie was incredible. he feels like he could actually exist while also having that comic book charm/chaos i love so much. id enjoy more riddles, but the ones that we get are fantastic. that "you are el/url" thing made start laughing like a madwoman because how the hell do you come up with that?!? thats fantastic!! beyond the riddles, his actual personality and stage presence are astounding. that first scene where he kills the mayor? chefs kiss. the little "goodbye!" at the end of his first video is really funny and gives so much character. and when hes finally caught, that "i just ordered a slice of pumpkin pie" is just- !!! and when he started singing ava maria i got chills. im gonna shut up now, but i cant wait for more riddler
This movie is a 10/10 for me. The reason is because each and every plot point, every piece of music, costume design, sound design, framing, cinematography, acting, and everything else about the film was crafted with such care. Attention was paid by the director. All of the nuances in the film also what true Batman fans appreciate, and these are things that no Batman film has done before this. 10/10 doesn't necessarily mean perfect. No film is perfect, but the 10/10 is for all the reasons stated above...and, in my opinion, and evidently the opinion of many, this was damn near perfection.
I love how Matt Reeves was panned by critics for Cloverfield back in the early 2000's but now we're praising him for his later works. Don't get me wrong, I loved Cloverfield and his (then) later works with the "Apes" films. I'm proud that we get a director like Reeves who pays attention to source material and finds the different approaches to story telling that we haven't seen in a long while. Great job! Looking forward to the next film!
I LOVED the movie. But I HATED the fact that they pretty much had all the major points throughout every part of the movie in the trailers. So although the story was a surprise, the shots weren’t cause I had pretty much seen them all.
That’s literally why I stayed away from trailers, tv spots, images etc. you can’t go into a movie having being spoiled by trailers and whatnot and *not* be underwhelmed/disappointed. The movie itself was very good, but unfortunately I had some issues with it so it stopped it from being perfect for me, TDK is still the best Batman movie imo but The Batman is a close second.
I appreciated a lot of the little things they put into the film. What drew me in immediately was how they acknowledge the Bat Signal being more than just a way to alert Batman, it was a weapon to make criminals run in fear because the Bat may be after them. Another thing was the sound design, i didn’t notice it till someone pointed it out to me but every time Batman walked they made his footsteps loud and heavy, it really made Batman feel like he had a menacing presence without even saying a word

Loved the movie. It blew me away. Not perfect by any means but it's the first time it felt like the real Gotham and the real spirit of Batman were captured almost perfectly
I think it was heavy on mood and atmosphere and for many, this is what makes it good. For me, nailing down the milieu is not enough, it has to tell a story that's not too predictable. It was predictable for me, having seen Seven many times and it borrows from that. Perhaps Fincher may have done better with the material. Familiar with Reeves' work; he is good with a pared-down story like his old movies -- Let me in, Let the Right one in -- but for The Batman, the movie doesn't have scale or heft or even expanse, considering he's doing more than just a little neighborhood as milieu.
I thought it was awful. You people got issues. I guess growing up with crap movies has messed you people up.

Batman acknowledging that “he can’t be everywhere and he must choose his targets carefully” was a standout moment for me. Idk why there was just something about it that made him feel even more grounded and believable.

The fact that he let them go after beating the daylights out of them just shows this even more, the targets he picked were the one that could most effectively spread the fear that he's trying to build through the criminal undeground of Gotham

The moment Batman becomes a hero is so beautifully clear. The entire film, he is the shadows. But when he realises he can actually help people and inspire people he leaves the shadows behind. He lights up a flare that destroys the shadows making him the light.
My favorite part of that scene is that he instantly jumps into action with selfless abandon. Then as he jumps down you can see the small cadre of officers standing wide eyed at seeing someone practically jump to his death in order to save the dark figures below. None of them knows if any of them are important people but someone trying so hard to save random is such a foreign concept in this world of Gotham that Reeves has developed sparks as much hope in those officers who want to be good as it does the people who came to that rally with the hope that Gotham can be better.

i mean i think he still is the shadows. striking fear into the eharts of criminals is his whole thing. his whole backstory. he was afraid of bats so he wants to strike that same fear in criminals as he was of bats as a kid. HE wants them to think twice before robbing. i loved the horror esc music for batman because that's exactly what it is for crooks. a horror movie

That last shot of Pattinson on the bike where you see all that acting in just his eyes looking at Selina and contemplating a future with her and then looking forward and reaffirming his resolve for the city as he speeds up gave me chills. Just what a masterpiece.

Ah, interesting take! I saw that scene as Bruce already for sure heading back to Gotham, but he just wanted to be with, near, or even simply looking at Selina for every last second he could possibly get with her, because she brought him that intimate comfort he'd been missing for so long. It felt like a very wistful, humanizing note to end on for this Bruce, considering how distant he is.
Either way, VERY unique final shot for a Batman movie!! It could've so easily been just him standing over the city and gliding away. I'm glad they did something so different and so human, just like the movie as a whole.
That was a good one and I don't blame him neither catwoman looking good these days.

He’s more comfortable in the bat suit.
Than he is in his own skin.
It’s a fascinating take on the character that not everyone is gonna accept.
But at least the director had the guts to try something a little different with this Batman.

Battinson and Gordon’s on screen chemistry honestly stole the show. I think R. Pats really knows how to bounce off his scene partners, in my opinion. He’s a great actor, himself, and he seemingly knows how to make it so that his energy doesn’t occlude that of the person who he’s sharing the screen with, but rather elevates both people’s energy levels. He just is good at portraying chemistry.

Tbh, it didn't steal the show as it was an essential part of the movie. It is a detective story, and both are detectives solving a mystery. The whole movie to me is an absolute masterpiece of acting, ambience, and dialogues, everything was so well connected, so tight, nothing was out of place imo!
I agree, I loved the interplay between them. Jeffrey Wright was fantastic in this role.

The opening Halloween monologue at the beginning and the final monologue at the end made this movie perfect for me. Matt Reeves understands exactly who Batman is.

From the moment he lights the flare and leads the people out of the dark waters to safety, the rest was absolutely beautiful. The Nirvana reprise, Batman narrating about the city underwater, the national guard, martial law, and how the criminal element never rests, was some deep stuff. I was literally "in awe" and 500% invested. I hope they keep the Joker very minimal in the sequel and it seems like it's leading towards a Court/City of Owls and No Man's Land/Arkham City type story. Which is amazing.

There's two scenes in The Batman that really got me emotional. The part where Bruce tells Alfred that he scared to lose him. That he thought he mastered his fear, but the thought of losing Alfred makes him genuinely afraid got me in the heart man. Then there's the scene where we see how Bruce is really a good person because he tells Selina she doesn't have to pay with her father by killing him. The fact that he has a strong moral compass, and he knows that an eye for an eye is a vicious cycle that doesn't bring the victim peace says so much about Bruce. He's a good man deep down he just needs to grow.
The final scene made me teary too. Straight out of Mask of Phantasm. Duty is more important than being happy for our Batman.
Yessss the hospital scene was a great heart-to-heart, top to bottom.
I also loved seeing the "no guns, no killing" Batman rear his head when Selina said they need to kill Falcone. I think he basically a line that the animated Jason O'mara Batman has said. "That makes you like them," to Damian Wayne. He also said "You can't fight crime by becoming a criminal" which is great. Not to mention the Red Hood dilemma! "If I let myself go down that road...I'll never come back."
"You don't have to pay with him" is now one of my favorite lines among that collection of Batman anti-kill quotes. So well put. Revenge doesn't make anything better, it just stoops you down to their level so you become the thing you hate, it doubles all those horrible feelings instead of curing them, and possibly even causes others to want to get revenge on you back so the cycle never ends.
Battinson is just the best live action Batman, man. I love him so much. He feels like the comics and cartoons and games brought to life.
My great grandfather passed away last month and I'll always remember him grabbing my hand tight in the bed as I sat next to him... I'll never forget that, and that's all I could think of in that scene, legit got emotional. Andy Serkis was incredible in this movie and he really brought the best out of Pattinson in every scene.
I like the fact that it wasn't "I have one rule" shit when it came to stopping Selena from killing Falcone or the corrupt cop. He wanted to save her soul (essentially), because in this "universe" what she would have done may be a positive (removing the corrupt elements that perpetuate the corruption) for Gotham but not for her. There's an emotional reason why Batman stopped her.
Which is good, because Nolan's "I don't kill" is bullshit in his own films. Batman doesn't MURDER, he manslaughters a bunch. He manslaughtered the shit out of the league of shadows members before they did anything bad.
I find the deployment of the not killing creed in 'The Batman' to be much more effective than Nolan's version because of this. It's not cut and dry, it's nuanced.
EDIT: Also that scene with Alfred is the scene that shows Batman needs to use the 'mask' to protect those he loves, and he didn't realise it till that scene. It's good, it explains why he doesn't do playboy bullshit (which is dumb cause theres only 2 billionaire playboys that exist so how is that a cover?).
I love how he didn’t say directly, “I’m afraid of losing you.” Instead, he says he hasn’t mastered the fear of losing those he cares about and takes Alfred’s hand. Bruce cares deeply but he is a man of action. He’s socially inept as the millionaire Bruce Wayne and even to those he is closest to as seen by some of the tense scenes with Alfred.
Even with Selina and Gordon, he states subtle nods to his feelings like when he and Selina say goodbye he says, “Take care of yourself.” With Gordon, he tells him he’s a good cop.
These carry so much subtext and weight given who this Batman is. It’s lovely. He’s an orphan, isolated, angry, sad. He’s still that little boy in the alley, born in the shadows, only now learning that shadows only exist because of the light.
Matt Reeves explained in an interview that while making The Batman he understood why none of the other filmmakers tried to do a detective Batman before, because it's extremely hard to make it entertaining as a movie

I personally believe the “I am vengeance” theme is a foreshadowing of the future trilogy. The second film will explore “I am the night”, and the third film will bring the franchise to a full circle by establishing “I am Batman”

I love the detail of Bruce picking up the little boy out of the water essentially picking himself up. I think this is my new favorite comic book movie I literally had my jaw on the floor almost the whole 3 hours.
i hope the kid figures out who he is. he knows the story of bruce wayne and saw Bruce looking at him at the funeral and Batman looked at him the same way after his dad died. could be kinda like the TDKR where Blake recognized the same anger he had in Bruce.

No, not a little boy. It was a young woman. He holds her hand until the last possible second to ensure her that it's going to be okay. One of the most beautiful moments in the movie.

I love how he shifts his purpose from being vengeance to being a symbol of hope. When one of riddler’s followers calls himself “vengeance” just like Batman, it makes him realize his inspiration to others hasn’t been a 100% good thing. When riddler expects Batman to go along with his plan after explaining it in Arkham Asylum, or how Selina expects Batman to help her take down Falcony, they are seeing Batman as nothing more than vengeance. By the end of the film he has become a sign of hope in Gotham more than a sign of vengeance, especially seen when he helps those trapped by the flood with his flare lighting the way as a beacon of better things to come.
People are actually missing the plot of the film and seeing that big picture. Every critic has just nit picked and compared it to Nolan’s trilogy which is a different take on the character. They critic this because it’s not the superhero cliche film they’re used to but if it was they’d hate that too.
@@lethalassassin1754 Nolan’s isnt that either, but I think you are correct; they aren’t ready for superhero movies to be anything but either campy or super intense and complex; this story isnt complex in my opinion unlike Dark Knight which leaves a lot open to interpretation. Batman in this has an obvious development in character whilst also being the obvious winner (for now), but nobody can comprehend superhero movies being good as noir detective films.

One of my favorite scenes in this movie was Batman's escape from the Police station. When he gets to the rooftop and is about to leap that momentary look of fear in his eyes right before he gathers his balls & leaps was a genius decision. It showed how alot of what was going on was new to this Batman and how at the end of the day he's just a man. The word that kept coming to my mind the entire time watching this movie was MASTERPIECE. Can't wait to see it again.

The last scene in which Batman tells Selina “take care of yourself”, damn you can see the pain in Batman’s eyes. Just for once, he falls for someone, and had to sacrifice what he loved for Gotham, to repair the broken city as he has faith in it.. the writing and emotion in it is on the next level.

This version of Batman isn't interested in putting on the billionaire playboy persona yet. His only focus is being Batman. That's why even in the funeral scene he doesn't say much and barely responds to anyone because he's a man on a mission. But it'll be cool to see him evolve into a more traditional Batman that manages the public image of Bruce Wayne.

very true. this movie doesnt explore batman origin because everyone pretty much knows it all already. instead, it explores his first few years as batman, probably coming back from his training with ras al ghul (which is equivalent to the training in vengence). In his first few years he is still fighting crime for the sake of fighting crime with only a simple morality of no-killing. Bruce wayne isn’t here yet, thats why he doesn’t appear in the movie, there is no playboy philanthropist persona because he hasn’t realized it yet. This is also the reason why the character development is this movie is actually quite faithful to batman origin.

I like how this Batman really shows that he is still young and still struggling with being Batman. From his ways of crime fighting, ways of balancing his 2 lives, and to his gear. Every ounce of it screams that he is just new to this and has a long way to go.

Not something I’ve seen anyone mention yet but Gotham felt super unique in this movie it felt super gritty, nasty but also full of life you could truly feel like every one on the train in the beginning or at their equivalent of time square had their own lives

Im not even a big superhero fan nor even a Batman fan, but this film was really great, I'd easily go to the theaters to watch a second time
When Batman acknowledged that he needed to do more after realizing he was the inspiration to Riddler's vengeance, it kind of hit my soul deeply. Because I never really thought that anybody could portray an idea that a violent vigilante, dressed in an all black bat suit, could potentially inspire some sick and twisted minds. And when he admits that maybe he isn't doing enough to distinguish himself and /or make it obvious that he's an honorable, honest guy trying to help, I really thought, "Wow, he is really unable to control who or what he is inspiring." I can't wait to see who the villain is in the next film and how he is handled. Riddler's character development was epic!
Many of the darker Batman stories show that Batman creates all his villains, some even being close friends with him before they turn to crime, like Two Face or Clay Face in some iterations.
And because Batman knows this, he feels a heavier burden to make sure they are taken care of, not just killed, even though he fails constantly and putting them in Arkham is never a permanent solution.
The Dark Knight touches on this a little bit, but doesn't go as deep as this series will go, I think. In TDK, the joker says "You complete me" and lets Batman know that "To them, you're just a freak like me" which is done in a more complex manner in The Batman, when Riddler believes that Batman and him were "working together as a team."
It may also be implied that The Joker was possibly created by Batman in the new series due to the deleted scene that was posted on youtube.
I don't want to shut you down because I agree with you but if you want to see this idea explored elsewhere, the Daredevil TV show touched upon this. It was during season 2 which has decidedly the worst season of the show, but Daredevil's crusade is implied to inspired that of the Punisher.
This was also key in the "escalation?" Exchange between Gordon and Batman in Batman Begins.
I think the reason filmmakers haven't leaned on the detective angle is because good mysteries and detective films are extremely hard to pull off well, look at Se7en no one apart from Fincher could've pulled it off so well. Just my opinion...I don't wanna say Nolan or Snyder or Burton are bad filmmakers, they just played to their strengths (philosophical dilemmas, epic action and dark atmosphere respectively) Reeves did the impossible, he made Batman not just cool again but also frightening...

I like how the Riddler was literally the only character who'd call him Batman throughout the entire movie. Well, he was his idol after all, the riddleman even went so far as expecting Batman to join his side because of how similar they were in terms of vigilantism. Thus, Edward Nashton was the only foe that actually took Batman seriously and not out of fear, but respect...
I felt weird coming out of the theater and thinking to myself that my absolute favorite Batman movie couldn't be the most recent. That place surely has to belong to an established classic like The Dark Knight, right? I shouldn't make such a bold statement even to myself, and was just riding the rush of having just experienced it, and it would eventually fall to its real spot without my own personal ranking. But as the days went by and I found myself still thinking about it, still wanting to go watch it again, still remembering details and finding in them new ways in which it was such a masterpiece, I'm starting to realize this might actually be, indeed, my favorite Batman film.

The take on the bat symbol in the sky was perfect, to instill fear in enemies' heads. To attack anywhere when he can't be everywhere. The meaning of the shadows. So good.
The ending of the movie is easily my most favorite scene in the entire film. Batman escorting the citizens out of the water, and carrying a girl to safety. And his whole line about giving hope to the city instead of just being a vengeful vigilante. That, to me, was peak Batman.
I can listen to that first narration monologue every day honestly. And I love the last scene score with cat woman and Batman going their separate ways literally and in terms of their moral compass. It was so sentimental to me. Kindred spirits who can’t be together cause of their trauma.
watched it twice already, my only complaint is it couldve been just a BIT shorter but thats just nit picking. I think people who are hating are still comparing it to the nolan films and are dark knight fan boys, the second time watching it I went it with nolans movies completely out of my mind and enjoyed this even more. Right?? I can't really think of any scene that could be completely cut (other than Riddler and Joker in the asylum). Any pacing problems were simply scenes that were a bit indulgent or dragging their feet. Other than that, every scene did have a purpose.
In my eyes, the Nolan trilogy was always kinda like "the best we had" in terms of a grounded realistic live Batman, but now that we have Reeves' Batman, dare I say it I can barely imagine going back. This might possibly completely blow The Dark Knight out of the water for me. It feels *so much more* Batman-y to me. TDK feels so...sterile now. Batman Begins was always my favorite Nolan Batman film because it was a grimier, emotionally driven story for Bruce, and "The Batman" was exactly that. This is what Batman's been missing for so long.
Though I will say, Bale's playboy Wayne facade was always a treat, and that seems to be the only major issue people have with Pattinson's Bruce, that he was so mopey and antisocial, but I loved that. He is younger after all. I wonder where this Bruce will go? Robert going to the levels of Bale's playboy would be so funny to see, but I think he'll most likely do quiet philanthropy after Gotham's flood, which may put his secret identity back in jeopardy.

I don't think that he was saying that she was apathetic towards everything, just about Gotham's problems. She doesn't care if Gotham's corruption gets cleaned up, which is apathy. That's okay. We don't have to feel something about everything. It's normal to direct our passion to the things we care about and ignore the rest and that's what she does. I think it's only brought up in this video to contrast how Batman feels about Gotham.
This film is very much a film lovers film, on first viewing I thought it was very good but after watching a few videos and reading peoples comments I feel the need to see it again, there are so many hidden details in the depths of this film that make it so impressive

I binged all the Marvel movies last summer but this pulled me in like no other superhero movie. I’m biased because I’ve loved Robert Pattinson for 14 years lol but because of that I’m incredibly interested to learn more about the universe aside from what I knew as a kid, watching the tv show because my brother and dad loved it. I’m so proud of Rob, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they see an influx of new female Batman fans 🤣

And finally a character actor is given the chance to play a Batman/Bruce Wayne role that does the complex character from the best DC stories justice: He can swing a bat, he can move in the shadows like a bat, he can bare-knuckle-fight multiple armed thugs at once, solve riddles, investigate stealthily, calculate risks, take risks, project fear, give comfort, reign himself in and let loose as the situation requires, and yet he cannot deal with his childhood trauma in an emotionally grown up and healthy way, but nevertheless he manages to recognize both the damage he has taken and the damage he has dealt, takes responsibility for his actions and accepts the hard truth that although it might take a sociopath to take out a sociopath, to "simply" do so is not enough by far, neither to become a happier person nor to make the world a better place for humanity. But he makes it his duty to try the latter over the former. I feel like this is the Batman film FOR batman fans. Where, Nolan’s trilogy was the Batman films for general audiences.. with the typical marvel movie formula… villain causes havoc in Gotham, batman fights villain.. rinse, wash and repeat.
THIS Batman is FOR Batman fans.. not the general audience… Gotham itself is the best portrayal of the city BY FAR and Pattinson played the character with such rawness and emotion it’s the most comic faithful batman thus far.
I could see why a lot of general audiences don’t like it.. due to its darker tone, complex story and length. But for me, it’s now my favorite batman film.

While I buy and large agree with what you're saying, I wouldn't necessarily call Nolan's trilogy a "marvel formula" set of films. They're incredible unique and game changing. I would say It more so has to do with the fact that The Batman leans heavily into detective fiction and noir and is overall a "slower" paced film that may not be for everyone. That being said, yeah...this is the Batman from the comics through and through!

I adored it. It felt so refreshing to see a superhero movie that actually felt like a standalone film and not an episode of an extremely expensive Disney show. I love the MCU, but it’s getting bland. I love what they did with Batman‘s character, having him figure out in this movie that to be a symbol for Gotham, he can’t just be a vigilante brutally beating people, but a hero, people need. I think his trilogy has the potential to be the best Batman trilogy, and may be one of the best superhero trilogies ever. I’m very excited to see where the future goes for Robert Pattinson‘s take on the character, and I can’t wait to see the villains and other characters in the sequel. I thought that directorial style by Matt Reeves was just phenomenal. Incredible Director. Makes me want to go rewatch his planet of the apes trilogy. And Colin Farrell contacted great as the penguin. I’m sure his show on HBO Max will be great, and fill in some gaps so that the Batman two won’t need to. Batman has some of the most interesting supporting characters ever, so it makes sense making that aren’t solely based around him. I think in the next few movies we’re probably going to see Batman, and Bruce of all to become more Accustomes to the public eye.

Annnnnnnd .... THIS is precisely why I want to see the masterpiece that Reeves could potentially bring us by fully exploring the Scarecrow as the tier 1 villain he is and how he would interact and relate to the Batman. FEAR. Seeing this explored through Reeves vision would be spectacular.

I love Ben Affleck as Batman but I'm just going to go be honest. Don't think his Batman movie would have been as good as this. His movie from the leaks focused on Deathstroke and full on heavy action. While that's great, it's the same Batman as always. We've never seen Batman actually be a detective properly in a previous movie before. I'm glad his movie didn't happen because we wouldn't have gotten this ambitious detective noir thriller, entirely focusing on Batman being a detective.

Batfleck deserved better. I think Ben sees at least one little "F you" silver lining even for his haters, and that's the warehouse scene which will likely always be the best Batman love action scene in history.
Getting a serious character study film rooted in genre honestly kind of made Nolan's films feel like toys of the real thing... which is this. I love comparing things. Nolan's films are great... 2/3 at least. But those films were impactful ideological thought pieces sold by great acting performances, the setting and characters really didn't get the attention the ideas did. Not to mention, Nolan's films were very motivated by structure and iconography, whereas this movie is driven by pure cinematic prowess, editing, pacing, lighting, framing, blocking, visual metaphors, thematic coding, everything you can think to list. It's a perfect 10/10 movie. It bulldozed every other super hero thing I've ever been impressed by. I think the only thing remotely as cool was Netflix's Daredevil.
The fact that you can take the time to break down a film like this tells you just how much depth it has. Well done!

I just watched the movie, dude, EVEN THE BATMOBILE WAS SCARY. I'm not a big Batman fan, but man, this ended up being my second fav super heroe movie! First one being Spiderman 2.

This was a shining moment 👌. Lovely photography, clever riddles, greatest batsuit and batmobile ever put to film and great acting from everyone involved. The hommage to noir films and detective origins of Batman were truly needed. Closest mood to Mask of the Phantasm which in my opinion remains the greatest Batman movie ever.
This movie was hands down one of the best depictions on Batman. I loved the way they actually made Batman a detective. I still do wonder where he learned how to fight. I believe Alfred taught him, but wasn't he trained by the League of Assassin's Ra's Al Grohl?

I like how Bruce *wasn't* the World's Greatest Detective in this movie yet because he's still a little green, ultimately Gordon and Bruce are both incorrect a lot and kind of lose against the Riddler overall though they stop him from accomplishing some of his goals. This doesn't mean the movie suffers from Batman being incompetent since he clearly is not incompetent, he's just still young and not at the heights he one day will be.
I loved how emo Bruce Wayne was. All the black eye make up. The hair in the eyes. So cool.

Idk if anyone else caught it but one of my favorite part of this movie was when he was about to leap with his wingsuit but had that hesitation because of the height. I loved the little details showing he's a new Batman on his second year. This movie was nothing less than amazing!
i love this movie so much, it actually made me become more interested in batman as overall. I can't add much since my knowledge of batman is really limited, but I just want to say that the scene between Bruce and Alfred in the hospital never fails to make me cry. I saw the movie 10 times, and each time I felt tears streaming down my face when Bruce was talking about fear etc to Alfred. The Batman's Bruce is just a broken man bottling his emotions up and devoting himself to try and save the city that took his parents away, only to be 'baptised' and born again (symbolised by the scene where he leads the people to safety at the end).
The final scene, particularly the final shot was just absolutely perfect.
After rewatching The Dark Knight today, The Batman is my favorite live action batman movie and Robert Pattinson is my favorite Batman. TDK will always hold a very special place in my heart like all other batman movies, yes event the George Clooney one but this is The Batman for me. There's just something about it that really remind me of reading the comics and watching the animated series growing up, it felt like I was reliving how I fell in love with Batman in the first place. Hell after seeing the movie i sat down and rewatched year one and a bunch of other animated batman movies and this film just captured everything I love about this character. Not only was he violent enough but also the way he looks at the boy at the beginning of the movie, it tells you everything you need to know about Batman as a character in less than 15 minutes. He understands pain, and will stop at nothing to make gotham a better place. It's a beautiful movie, well acted, great score, and the set design mixed with well done practical effects has me itching for more.
First time I watched this didn’t hit me that hard. But I just rewatched it a week ago and genuinely started tearing up at the end. Especially when Batman is carrying the girl to helicopter stretcher and she holds on to him. Really almost started bawling there lol. Really love the juxtaposition between the first innocent person he interacts with and the last.
I've got to say, with the darker kind of film making that reeves is going for, I'm excited to see different rogues. I can imagine scarecrow and joker in particular being incredible characters in this darker style.

The detail and care put into this film is exceptional. Despite the three hour run time I really couldn’t find a scene they could cut out or one that felt like an extra because every moment had me wanting more. They really chose the right moments that added nicely to Batman as a character. I love how he has a real and fresh character arc in this one.
Also, I like how Pattinson acts with his eyes. It’s amazing what he can convey with very little lines. Everyone in the cast had great to amazing performances.
Let's not forget the BEST introduction to a Batmobile EVER. That sound! Oh my.... if there's a moment worth jizzing in your pants... it's THAT one.
I loved how the action felt purposeful. So often in superhero movies it just feels like they add action scenes to keep the viewer interested. The action was brutal, gripping and dangerous. Batman fought in a flawed desperate manner. He fought angry almost suicidal in the positions he put himself in. Each action scene was purposeful until the climax. This movie was beautiful.
The first 10 minutes is the best thing Batman related that’s ever been on screen.. and the movie keeps that quality all the way through.
I had some reservations about Robert Pattinson of playing Batman, but I've never been happier that I was wrong.

The first scene where we see the Batmobile is AMAZING! I laughed a nervous laughter because my body could not handle how cool and menacing it was.
To me this was the best adaptation of Batman and the most comic accurate I enjoyed every minute of it, the ending where Batman realised he’s no better than the criminals he’s fighting was an amazing moment

I love your opinions on this! I thought this movie was almost perfect! I really like how Bruce and Batman are pretty much the same because he doesn't know how or doesn't care to be Bruce Wayne, there's only Batman with him, he hasn't made the mask of Bruce Wayne.
This film was damn near perfect. Every scene advanced the plot. No wasted motion. I do have a few little gripes but with some things they are entirely miniscule compared to how much I loved this film. Shit, I could watch it with the sound off and still have a good time. The cinematography is just beautiful. Rob absolutely crushed it as Batman. Dano deciding to go full Zodiac was a bold, risky move that ended up working out in spades. Zoe is gorgeous and has fantastic chemistry with Rob. If this isn't the best Batman film ever made then it's at the very least tied for first
Zoe and Rob’s chemistry made batman and cat woman sexy again. This movie blew me away, by far my fav batman and it’s not even close.

But in real life it’s like that. When so many of the elite class are so irredeemably corrupt, the laypeople cannot tell the difference between just another money laundering scheme from the very beginning, and a real effort by a genuine person who happens to be rich, only it didn’t pan out as he intended. One of the many, many little touches that make for realism in this movie.

This movie was great. I’m kinda getting desensitized to all of the mega action crowd pleasers from the MCU. Never thought I’d ever say that.
Not just the fact that the opening monologue was wonderful, but the actual events in the beginning reminded me so much of Batman the Animated Series. The way he came out of shadows, the way they were scared to even look down a dark hallway, not to mention the music when he confronts the gang. Absolutely epic!
I wish the DC verse had leaned into this mood from the beginning tbh. Yes I really loved James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, which is the polar opposite of this film, but I also appreciate this film for being the other side of the coin of Marvel's redefinition of comic book film (brightly-lit, pop culture references, fan-service appearances, cool one-liners, after-credits scenes... I'm also a fan btw) if they had been doing that from the beginning of their revival, they would have had something so strong going in the face of the MCU's goliath.
I'm absolutely fascinated by what stories they can tell with sequels. I hope we get a Political-esque Penguin story, and something to do with Scarecrow or the Court of Owl

TDK trilogy is still my fav, but Reeves has done something so incredible we don’t even know how good this can get! One also has to understand that like all kids who grew up in wealth, bruce is ignorant of systematic issues and stemming from inequality, wealth and corruption and power at the top. Cuz well he is in that circle so he sees bottom feeders as the issue and is living in the dark. The riddler also brings him into the light

as a villain lover, the riddler in this movie was incredible. he feels like he could actually exist while also having that comic book charm/chaos i love so much. id enjoy more riddles, but the ones that we get are fantastic. that "you are el/url" thing made start laughing like a madwoman because how the hell do you come up with that?!? thats fantastic!! beyond the riddles, his actual personality and stage presence are astounding. that first scene where he kills the mayor? chefs kiss. the little "goodbye!" at the end of his first video is really funny and gives so much character. and when hes finally caught, that "i just ordered a slice of pumpkin pie" is just- !!! and when he started singing ava maria i got chills. im gonna shut up now, but i cant wait for more riddler

An outstanding review and essay. Well written and spoken. I loved the film as well. The definitive Batman has finally arrived.
This movie is a 10/10 for me. The reason is because each and every plot point, every piece of music, costume design, sound design, framing, cinematography, acting, and everything else about the film was crafted with such care. Attention was paid by the director. All of the nuances in the film also what true Batman fans appreciate, and these are things that no Batman film has done before this. 10/10 doesn't necessarily mean perfect. No film is perfect, but the 10/10 is for all the reasons stated above...and, in my opinion, and evidently the opinion of many, this was damn near perfection.
I love how Matt Reeves was panned by critics for Cloverfield back in the early 2000's but now we're praising him for his later works. Don't get me wrong, I loved Cloverfield and his (then) later works with the "Apes" films. I'm proud that we get a director like Reeves who pays attention to source material and finds the different approaches to story telling that we haven't seen in a long while. Great job! Looking forward to the next film!

The best Batman movie ever. Its just like the comics.
I LOVED the movie. But I HATED the fact that they pretty much had all the major points throughout every part of the movie in the trailers. So although the story was a surprise, the shots weren’t cause I had pretty much seen them all.
That’s literally why I stayed away from trailers, tv spots, images etc. you can’t go into a movie having being spoiled by trailers and whatnot and *not* be underwhelmed/disappointed. The movie itself was very good, but unfortunately I had some issues with it so it stopped it from being perfect for me, TDK is still the best Batman movie imo but The Batman is a close second.
I appreciated a lot of the little things they put into the film. What drew me in immediately was how they acknowledge the Bat Signal being more than just a way to alert Batman, it was a weapon to make criminals run in fear because the Bat may be after them.
Another thing was the sound design, i didn’t notice it till someone pointed it out to me but every time Batman walked they made his footsteps loud and heavy, it really made Batman feel like he had a menacing presence without even saying a word
