In my opinion, The Batman is a masterful achievement when it comes to the comic book genre. It does what much of them don't do and that is... take an iconic character, relate back to their origins and showcase them within another genre. It's a detective noir and that is something we haven't seen much of. Matt Reeves has pulled it off greatly and it only gets me excited for the rest of his potential trilogy. But that's just my opinion and I'm excited to hear what you guys think. So let me know in the comments section.

I loved it. It captures who and what the Batman is from the original source material with masterful filmmaking and technical achievements involved. My only nitpick of the film is the length but it is needed for all the characters, worldbuilding and to incorporate everything needed to make a great film. Cant wait to watch it again.

We haven’t even seen this to this degree in the animated movies which I always absolutely love. It’s a new iteration with a story and character arc never been done before in Batman. You can easily create a comic book out of this movie with the same story and characters and every Batman fan would love it which makes it better than TDK.

I thought the movie was phenomenal but there are a couple things I woulda added that would've made it perfect.
      1) Falconi's influence over the city and officials/politicians could've more fleshed out with like a scene similar to one from Daredevil where the cops kill someone in interrogation room for even mentioning Fisk's name.
      2) I wish they added a repeating joke made by Alfred that produced no reaction from Bruce in the beginning but made him laugh later when Bruce and Alfred connected at the hospital bed (Not asking for unnecessary jokes but 1 like that would've kept people from saying the new Bruce is too broody/edge-lord all the time)
3)T hey should've continued the theme of batman coming out of dark corners and shit and criminals being cautious of dark corners, instead of it just being at the beginning of the movie.
      4) I love how they made Bruce realize his influence over the city and how perspective matters but I wish they would've ended the movie with Batman changing into Bruce and putting on a fake smile before he is about to go meet company shareholders. Like end the movie with him looking fresh af with a fake but sincere-looking smile...

I haven't really seen anyone talk about the use of the main theme at the beginning and end of this movie. The main theme for this movie is split into two parts. The first is a lot lighter and more hopeful, while the second part is a lot heavier and more menacing. At the beginning, Bruce talks about how since he became the Batman the crime has only gotten worse and how he isn't sure if he is actually doing anything good. To accompany that and go with the tone of this dark and corrupt Gotham they use the second part of the main theme, which is quite heavy and dark. To contrast that the end of the movie has a more positive tone and when Bruce realizes that he can bring hope to people and Gotham we hear the first part of the main theme playing.

It took a lil time for me to realize that Bruce Wayne and Batman have separate theme music. Something in the way you is an expression of Bruce Wayne’s anger and stagnation. He can’t grow as a character bc he accepts his anger as his truth. Batman is only an expression of vengeance for him personally
This changes bc ironically the riddler is inspired to create change for the forgotten of Gotham. So the word vengeance means 2 completely different things for Batman and the riddler

He's a logician who tackles his foes by his sheer will and determination. What brought my attention the most was the brilliant score. Whenever Batman appears on screen, either a version of "The Batman" or "Something In The Way" plays. These songs have identical chord progressions, so a single musical motif travels with Batman's character through the movie, shifting from intense and inspiring orchestrals to sad and gloomy when needed. The way you subconsciously recognize the soundtrack patterns from earlier scenes, immersing and submerging yourself into the movie without even knowing it is phenomenal.

The growth of both Bruce Wayne/Batman and the Gotham's citizens reaction to him are the truly masterful arcs not seen in other Batman films. At the beginning, he beats the crap out of the gang and when he looks at the victim, the victim says "Don't hurt me." Through the Riddler, he realizes he has become a symbol he never intended or thought about. At the end, Batman is helping the victims and when he loads the person of the medic pad, the victim grips his arm, driving home how far he has become in the eyes of Gotham's citizens. He has evolved from a figure of pure fear and vengeance to one of a guardian and hope.

This films cinematography was just UTTERLY gorgeous. The story was great and Gotham FELT like a character itself. The Batman character was also remarkably well done and well suited to the world this film created- though I would like to see Bruce Wayne delve into his playboy persona in later films. The Riddler was amazingly done and my only criticism of this film was that though it raised interesting ideas and concepts regarding morality, mental fatigue and the impact of one’s actions, it didn’t go anywhere deep with them. That being said, it’s the perfect setup for future films and I most CERTAINLY am going to watch this again.

I especially liked the costumes of Batman and Catwoman next to each other. Both looked perfunctory and elegant at once, but you could really tell the social class difference between both characters just by looking at the material and the way they were produced. It gave the whole dynamic between both characters so much depth and realism just on a visual level. I rarely notice things such as 'surface' details when watching a movie for the first time, but this caught my eye because it just underlines how thoughtfully conceptualized and how meticulously crafty the whole production is and how well all its compartments support the storytelling. This is substance in style, form follows function, and that it looks damn cool is just that extra cherry on top of a rich, multilayered and very tasty slice of cake.

After years of fun, but superficial superhero films, this was a brilliant and beautiful film. I would love to hear thoughts from the directors like Scorsese who have been critical of the super hero genre. One of the best moments of the film come in Batman’s final meeting with the Riddler in Arkham, where he says to The Batman, “you are not as smart as I thought you were.” This is so important because it makes our hero human.
One thing I think has been under discussed, is the way that Matt Reeves uses similar shots, actions etc to show that The Batman and Riddler are not that different. This places us in the middle of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s discussion about how we can easily become a kind of evil as we respond to evil itself.

    • @elfsieben1450
      @elfsieben1450 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That's the beauty of this film, it doesn't merely have hit the mark in terms of style, plot, action, tone, pacing, character development and narration, it actually had something to say, not just a superficial theme that runs through it to barely hold loose ends together, or a true/false problem to solve like a riddle, but an actual topic it discusses, a central question at the core of it, a question to ponder and take home, something that leaves a mark after the end titles have rolled. That's what distinguishes true art from mere craftsmanship.

I liked the Joker scene just fine. It teases a potential comeback for the Riddler and the potential for another iconic face-off between Batman and Joker that we haven’t had since 2008. And, imo, it did so without feeling completely out of left field because the scene demonstrates Nashton’s disappointment and need for redemption, as well as a friend, since Batman didn’t fulfill that need for him. On top of that, the Joker might be the type of character who helps inspire the more iconic look for Nashton without it feeling out of place.

The idea that Batman was such a dark figure, that he was inspiring the wrong kind of people, really spoke to what Batman represents. Sometimes it can seem like Batman is the bad guy, because of his personality and how he carries himself. This is such an underrated film. The whole singular idea, by Matt Reeves, that this is a man who is unhinged and unhealthily obsessed with fighting the criminal element at night who is constantly beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands and with his unlimited amount of vast resources at his disposal. All he sees in the criminal element, in this corrupt town that his family helped to build and found dating back to the late 1800s, are the people who killed his parents as a young child making him an orphan. So, he dons the mantle of that which he fears the most, in the form of the Batman, after training for the majority of his life to rid his city of the evil that took his parent's lives. He dosen't know who was responsible for killing Thomas and Martha Wayne so every criminal he sees, to him, is the criminal that killed his parents on that fateful night when he was only 10 years old. He is addicted to this mission, like a drug, so as both Bruce and Batman, he spends all of his time, trying to succeed in this impossible task he has set up for himself. That's why he never sees the light of day as Billionaire Bruce Wayne and is a social outcast and pariah. He is a man driven by vengeance; by revenge. By the end of this journey, as we see Bruce on a physical, mental, emotional and psychological level and transform from a young, naive, impatient man who makes mistakes still early in his career as a crime fighter we see him then become something else by the end...a symbol of hope, an ideal, a form of inspiration that makes criminals terrified to step out at night and commit their atrocities that makes Gotham City one of the worst places to call home. A city with a history and a foundation steeped in corruption and crime that ties back to the Wayne family and and their vast fortune. It also plants the seeds that will give him the inspiration to step out in the light of day to transform into the billionaire, playboy industrialist more interested in dating models and driving fast cars in order to hide in plain sight so no one would be able to distinguish Bruce Wayme is actually the Batman. A man consumed by vengeance who transforms into a symbol of hope. Obviously a film inspired by the comic book mythos and Arkham video game series and Batman animated series from the 1990s. Ironically, a film consisting of character arc transformations and worldbuilding moments that is actually one of the most faithful Batman comic book movies to the original source material in the 1940s. Such as Detective comics issue 27 from 1937 and batman issue 1 in 1940 created by Bob kane, Bill finger and Jerry Robinson. Then, the new 52 comics such as court of owls and Zero year by tomeu morey, john ottley, Jim lee, Scott Snyder. Batman year one by jim lee, David Mazuchelli and Frank miller as well as Batman: the long halloween and Batman: ego and other tales. This essay is lterally just scratching the surface of why it's actually one of the best batman films yet up their with the likes of the Dark knight from 2008.

I have seen all of the Batman films, and for me, this is the best by far. It is REAL... none of the others were anywhere near as remarkable as this version. Pattinson is superb, I was completely drawn in to his character and felt his pain...no other Batman version has done this, for me. Kravitz also superb, and their chemistry was brilliant. Paul Dano, as Riddler, is also amazing. Colin Farrell? What can I say? Utterly brilliant.
I didn't know what to expect, I've watched Pattinson in a number of films over the years... The Lighthouse is sublime. He owned the character in this, for me, and because of that, I will never be able to imagine The Batman being played by anyone else....Matt Reeves, you certainly made a superb film. Thank you.

You're f'ing insane, this film has tons of issues and doesn't touch the Dark Knight, which isn't just the gold standard for Batman films but the entire Super Hero genre. It's called recency bias, the Dark Knight is 14 years old so you kind of take it for granted. Spend more time with this film and you'll see the holes, particularly in the third act, which completely undoes a film that is already way overlong. Rob and Zoe also have no chemistry, and no one comes close to doing what Ledger did, which is the stuff of legend.

For me, Nolan’s Gotham isn’t really Gotham - it’s just a real life city. I also had this nagging feeling that Bale (despite being one of my fave actors) just didn’t quite nail the in-suit Batman. Ledger - yes masterful, but I don’t think it’s too controversial to suggest that Phoenix has already topped him…

The Batman was WAY better than I expected it to be. I don't know if I'd go as far as to call it a masterpiece, but I can't exactly explain why. It's definitely up there with The Dark Knight, though, and hit all the right notes with the detective/film noir angle.
One thing I haven't seen mentioned is the heavy footsteps you hear as Batman walks through a crime scene, or scene in general. It's absolutely intentional, and it adds _weight_ (literally?) to everything.
