    That slap in the face feels good, kind of liberating. I just made the decision to get a dog,
    a ghost dog that only exists in my head and especially for my fathead. And I have to take him out every morning for a walk. Usually I walk every two to three days around 6 miles, but now that I have a dog, I will do that every day. And when I am not in the mood, I will blame the dog but then take him out anyways. I will name him Carbo.

      @@gazels11 This quote has been attributed to Henry Ford and Tony Robbins but the actual corroborated data is from a speaker and educator Jessie Potter (1981) on family relations and sexuality. I have also heard it attributed to Albert Einstein (this one I would believe). Humans seem to be stuck in repeated addictive behaviours that they have a hard time recognizing. And organizing your life not to repeat them take a lot of thought and work. Most of us rather just stay in the warm “shit” as its too cold to climb out of it.

    Just like in my AA program, the carbs and sugar are not an option! I don’t stop so I can’t start. I’ve gained and lost 100 pounds 5 times in my life. They told me I should be able to eat everything in moderation 😂 I’m so grateful to know I am an addict! Abstinence is the only way for me. I’m so happy that this is finally being looked at as an addiction and not a moral issue.

      Comes down to individual difference, some people obv have more of a genetic predisposition to addiction, some have had more environmental factors to increase chance of addiction...what works for one might not be needed for another, but an awareness of the spectrum of possibilities is what's needed...this is why Dr C is great with his education, and I'm so glad you found your own path eventually, I'm nearly there myself 🙏

    Thank you, Brutally honest as always. I pissed off my son this morning when I told him I wasn’t making Christmas treats this year. I let him talk me into it last year under the promise that he’d gift it all away immediately. Of course it sat around the house & I went on a binder. Not going there this year.

      Perhaps convert some recpies to Keto/low carb? Lots of great cooks on TH-cam have done that with very good results and recipes. I’m doing that this year.❤️

      Oh, I'm making treats this Christmas, but they'll all be Keto treats, so I can have a few, but the family will get yummy stuff and not have all the sugar, grains and bad oils they would have had from the typical sweets.

    I literally just joined a sugar addiction group on Facebook and this woman posted that she was so proud of herself because she went to her friends house and didn’t eat any sweets and she posts a picture of a bowl full of yoghurt and bananas and kiwi and strawberries and blueberries and she said “I ate this instead”. Everyone was congratulating her and I proceeded to leave the group. That’s Fathead 😊

    I think this was the BEST video I have ever seen and I have watched thousands of them on keto and health. My mom is a horrible diabetic, on 2 oral meds and insulin. I am pre diabetic and decided to make a change because I do NOT want to become her. I get so upset when she checks her sugar and says "oh it's 140, I need to eat something". I tell her that's still high and she doesn't need to eat. Her response "that is low for me" - and then proceeds to eat an ice cream sandwich!! She is a nurse and should know better!! I have shared so many videos with her but she just doesn't want to change. She sees me losing weight and it's getting her attention. After so many failed attempts, I am finally understanding my faults and recognize being a "fathead". This video is gold and going into my "watch daily" arsenal.

    Dr. Cywess, I am a 62 year old grandmother with spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy. It took me a decade to loose 85 pounds. I have kept it off for a year. When I started my jourey I said I was a food addict and was scoffed at many times by family and friends. Give me permission to have ice cream, I will. I have said that many times. Since listening to you back in March, I have dropped my keto mug cake at night. My latest labs are: Tgs are 89, HbA1c 4.9 fasting Insulin is .5, fasting glucose is 98, and HDL 51. Prior to pandemic HDL was 62. My Doc is thrilled with my numbers but told me to add beef tallow to my morning coffee with an egg yolk. I aqua jog at my local YMCA pool 5 days a week because that is the medium I can "walk/run" in. I also take Robaxin and diazepam for muscle spasms. Thank you for being here for me.

    I buy carb stuff for the wife because she doesn't want to join me on the low carb/keto/carnivore way of eating. I don't eat any of her stuff and just stick to eating my meat/eggs/bacon/pork rinds. I hope she will come around one day and break the addiction that she has towards carbs/sugar.

    When I kicked the habit, I did so under the understang that diabetes was going to kill me. So I went carbo-non-grata. I went zero carb. I told myself that carbs were poison. They were an allergy. It wasn't hard at all. I've been carb free for 4 years (carb free in as what I could count. Anything with a measurable amount of carbs, I didn't eat.)

      I've used that verbiage (allergy) with friends and family who go out of their way to accommodate the vegans and vegetarians in the group, but mock my decision and go out of their way to try to get me to eat the way they do.

    Solve the addiction problem and you solve 90% of healthcare workload. It would decimate the industry overnight since 90% of hospital admissions are self inflicted problems stemming from addictive behaviour and metal health issues.

    I absolutely have lived this. I've struggled my whole life with being fat (I turned 50 today). This is the 4th time I've lost over 50lbs, and will be the last as I've realized my carb addiction. In July 2019 I was 285lbs (I'm 5'9") with extremely high blood pressure and fairly high A1C. Against my former doctors advice I decided to lose weight instead of loading up on scripts. Keto got me to 225lbs, but the pandemic and depression that came with it saw sugar creep back in, and me get back to 250. I cracked down, got to 236, and started looking into carnivour. June 21st was my first day, and I can't believe the difference it's made in my life, and on so many fonts. I'm 191, I feel like I haven't in over 25 years. My mental, physical, emotional and even oral health are possibly the best they've ever been, and I've for the first time in my life, actually recognized not only my carb addiction, but how truly and horribly prevalent in society it is. I recently found your channel, and will be sharing.

      @@stephwessel7346 my wife was diagnosed type 2 with an.A1C of 7.4 around 2 years ago. Her 50th birthday was last month, and her A1C is now 5.4. Keep going, it is the way.

      @@KEITHSANCHEZ oh, I will! I’m a lifer! 😀 A1C was creeping up over several years to a high of 5.7. After 6 months of ketosis was 4.8 last November. Haven’t checked since but it should still be under 5. Try to keep my carbs under 20 daily. Pretty much carnivore these days!

    Ty for saving my life. You have empowered me to acknowedge my addiction to carbs and change my life. I grew up in a traditional Italian family with all the cakes , pues, cookies, pasta etc...this video hit the nail on the head on why i have failed in all my attempts to better my life till recently. Thanks to you and Dr Berry i have dropped my A1c1 to 6.0 from 8.2 and dropped 128 lbs consistantly. I started my journey into being diabetic in 2011 but not until 2020 by watching your videos did i see progress. I understand the " FATHEAD" mentality because i see it in many people including myself. Tyvm for your gift of life to me. I was being recomended for gastric bypass and talikng about my circulation in my legs. Everything is 300% better and i am fetting stronger day by day. Changing habits is the hardest task a human can do. Popeye said " I am what I am......lol and it is so true. Thanks and God Bless you and your family.

    Addiction management, for me, right now, means no excess food in my house, EVER. I go out each day, buy my dinner ingredients, make my dinner, eat it, and that's it. I can't have leftovers; I'll eat whatever I have left over so I created a "Rehab" for myself. I am an "alcoholic on an island". It's excruciating. Daily.
    But I'm soooooooooooooooo worth it.
    A1c from 8.3 to 5.7 and going down. 😁😁😁

    I remember how PROUD I was, telling you that I ate KETO Ice Cream after being stressed out. And you were NOT proud for me. My Personal FAT HEAD Experience. I defended my choice. And I will be completely honest... I am addicted.
    But FINALLY, Ice Cream has no power for me. I stayed away from dairy long enough that ANY Dairy causes extreme allergic reactions. The last "TREAT" was no treat. I looked like I had been in a fight, I could not breathe through my nose for 2 days, and the Migraine I got... (And I THANK GOD that happened, LOL)
    Little by little, I am seeing the deeper truth. Trying to control something that "controls us" is like playing russian roullette with a semi-automatic weapon (It's just shooting yourself!).
    Also, I have REALIZED that ADMITTING I have Food Addictions... IS FREEING / LIBERATING, and NOT to be feared. Because I truly do not believe it was my fault. And as I see the Cueing and Triggering around me. I get stronger. Breathing is in my toolbox. Movement is in my toolbox. And REACHING OUT for connection with others, is in my toolbox.
    The wife has ice cream in the freezer. She has for months. I have HONESTLY not touched her ice cream in 3 years!
    And I wont. (Real ice cream is not food to me, it's all poison). As I transition, the desserts in the Restaurant are not even appealing.
    This year, for Thanksgiving... I am doing a 3 day fast! (I fasted for Thursday, last year)... I am Thankful that I HAVE THE COICE to not eat!
    I will probably walk a few extra miles.
    But I still struggle with with DIET Soda, and Nuts. THOSE I cannot keep in the house.
    It's a long process. It will be a LIFELONG process. It gets easier as I learn to eat for Nutrition and NOT Emotional Management.

    Actually - I do buy bread for my hubby & kids. I have not had bread since before March when I started keto. In fact I made bacon cheeseburgers last night and toasted bread for theirs but I ate mine bread less.
    Now - chocolate or sweets.... THAT is my struggle. I read EVERY label on everything I buy. It's a pain but I'm done with eating crap.
    I started keto just before Easter. My family isn't keto per season but they have all lost weight. My hubby drinks coke and coffee with sugar so there is ALWAYS coke in the house. I have a 6 pack of zevia *dr pepper* in the pantry for the times I *crave it* but its been in there almost a month.
    Thanks to you I realize that I am a carb addict and I'm working to identify triggers and items that I have little willpower to control (like chocolate). I have been working on fasting and I have a SERIOUS psychological hang up over not eating but thanks to your coffee idea I have been able to stretch out the time between solid food intake.
    I'm a work in progress. Not beating myself up when I stumble - just picking myself up - trying to learn from it and moving on.

      What kind of chocolate? I like my occasional chocolate, but it's always 92% and I often stop halfway (40g) because it's too satiating to eat the rest, and it doesn't tempt me either. I've had a bowl with said chocolate in my kitchen for a week in full display without even having a single craving, or occasionally I ate a small portion and had a bowl on my desk the entire day without even remembering I had chocolate there.
      Now anything less than say 85% and that's where I'd eat everything in sight and constantly think about it because of all the added sugar and the verh sweet taste. (´-﹏-`;)

      Anything else than 100% chocolate is actually a delivery vehicle for sugar. You don’t like the taste of 100% chocolate? Trust me it’s acquired taste. I wouldn’t eat any other chocolate now in my fourth year of carnivore lifestyle.

      @@artemis6628 I love 100% choco, it is just very hard to get and very expensive here. Think speciality stores only or through an online store. :/ Even the 92% I can only find in one big supermarket, every other store has ~82/85% at its highest..

      I crave 85% dark chocolate but every time I succumb to temptation I get a caffeine buzz...... because I have to eat the whole bar of course. I am a carbohydrate addict and I am thankful to Dr.Cywes, Eric Berg, Sten Eckberg, Dr.Ken Berry, Dr.Jason Fung et al. for helping me stay honest.....

      ​@@martinellis7156 Hope it gets easier over time! ^^ I used to struggle with dark choco as well, but after almost 2 years of low carb now, mostly keto/carnivore I can have certain non-trigger carbs as well, like dark chocolate, occasional rice and such. Before anything not super strict low carb or carnivore would set me off binging hard.

    Excellent video! I literally laughed out loud when Dr. mentioned “berries” and was transported to the moment I was lying in a hospital bed and Dr. Cywes was explaining the lifestyle to me and I thought “Is this guy seriously telling me I can no longer eat carbs at all?!! Not even a strawberry?!” It just seemed so radical and strange to me! Fast forward to the present moment where I have completely accepted that I am an addict and realize how damaging my addiction has been to not only my physical body but also to my emotional health and happiness in my life. I feel just like a drug addict who has been clean and sober for 6 months, realizing the clarity of life without my addiction and the harmful effects it has had on me my entire life. 6 months ago I thought this was crazy! Today, I weigh 125 lbs. less and I’m discovering the real person I was meant to be. Better late than never for me but I urge anyone who has struggled like I have to listen and try. You have nothing to lose except the shackles that bind you.

    I started my carnivore/keto life style a little over 1 and a half year ago. I was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic. My blood glucose was 355 at the doctor appointment. My A1C when the test came back was 10.5. As of July (my last A1C test) my A1c is down to 5.8. I have not lost much weight at all as measured on a scale, but I have seen body composition changes. I have been loosing fat but not weight. 10 minutes ago I took my blood glucose and it was 78. I am still taking metformin and glipizide, but I am hoping to get off of them soon.
    It can be done. Don't let anyone tell you you cannot correct type 2 diabetes. It can be done.

    Just found this channel. This is the most accurate description of my relationship with food I've ever heard. Low carb eating gives me appetite control and weight management becomes attainable. That said I have to be disciplined at the grocery store because if the carbohydrates are in my house at a weak moment I will eat them. If that doesn't describe addictive behavior I don't know what does.

    I'm going through this with my wife. None of us is obese, I started to follow the low-carb / keto way to stay healthy, and as a by-product I got an incredible weight control system, but it's hard to make her see reason. She "needs her carbs" every now and then, be it pasta, bread, fruit or some sugary junk. Every now and then means every day, obviously.

    Every time I fall off the keto lifestyle, you come out with a video like this that gets my mind back in the right place. I feel like you’re my keto therapist! lol
    I do know in my head how much better I feel when I’m eating the keto diet, and yet when I fall off the wagon, it is next to impossible to get me back on it within a month or two.

      Man I felt that! I myself have been off and on keto since 2018. You know addiction is real when you KNOW you feel better eating one way but will allow yourself to justify going off plan for the smallest of reasons. It really is a disease. What has helped me stay ultra strict recently is telling myself that while the cheat foods might taste great, that "high" will only last 20-30 minutes and then the self doubt, shame and guilt will set in and linger for days and then I am fighting for the next 5-7 days to get back where I left off, it is NOT worth it!

    Celebrated my birthday in July making myself a beautiful cake. I haven’t been able to get back on track. I’ve gained back 15 pounds of the many many more that needs to be lost. It sucks. I hurt. I’m miserable. Thanks for the straight talk dear doctor

      You CAN do it, Liz! And you WILL feel so much better. Make the changes in incremental steps. If you can, make Dr Cywes your Doctor. If there are obstacles to that and you need a more personal “tribe” check out Annette Bosworth, MD’s books and TH-cam channel. She’s how I found Dr Cywes and she has written a couple of books that were life changing for me, as well. I admire and respect several physicians in this space and have learned so much from their unique perspectives and experiences. ~Steph

    This is a great video. My husband (12+years sober) has replaced one habit for the other. Unfortunately, I’m a carb addict. We are navigating this addiction together. He could sit and eat a 1/2 gallon of ice cream.
    When he suggests we “cheat” or have carbs “just this once”, I will respond, “Sure! Right after we take a shot of whiskey.” He beginning to realize my carb addiction is a true addiction and by asking me to “cheat”, he is encouraging me to relapse. Dr. Cywes helps me relate to my Hubby on a level he understands.

    Love that you share your personal observations! So helpful! Had to laugh about the fat head comment. Had a DEXA scan at Dr. Fit & Fabulous’ Upgrade Performance Institute last month as a baseline to measure my weight training progress in Phase 3 of my personal Dr. Boz Neurons keto journey. Interestingly, my head is the only place where there’s not fat!

    To get good habits you need to practice with slow increments. For example eating breakfast later 30 mins each day untill you eat at 12pm. Just remember processed food is poison, avoid at all costs.

    Totally agree. Offering ANY kind of food regimen that advocates more than 20-50 grams per day Carbs is like spiking the coffee at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting with Vodka. LOL

      @@Ryan_DeWitt There are 1000s of Keto atheletes who already perform excellently no carbs. 20-50 grams is the Max. for anyone HONESTLY following a Keto or Atkins or Carnivore diet. I suggest you watch more of Dr. Cywes' TH-cams and learn something before spouting any more of your Trollish Ignorance. BTW I saw a photo of you - you are OBVIOUSLY not an athlete! LOL! RTFMLMAO!!!!

I can tell you from actually being around these people competing with them that very few do a low carb diet. Might want to present evidence instead of personal attack next time.     Family and friends who just don't (or won't) "get" the carbohydrate addiction model can be real saboteurs. "Just a little bit won't hurt" !! And sometimes people attempt sabotage because they feel threatened or jealous of your success, especially if they have always known you as an overweight and/or unwell person. It's taken a long time, but I have learned that I DO have the strength and determination to make my own food choices even in social and family situations where there is an overabundance of carbohydrate food available. I never thought I would get here, and I am by no means complacent, but I AM determined. 71 years old, 88lb (40kg) down, 44 lbs (20kg) to go to reach my ideal weight, I have reversed pre-diabetes, fatty liver, and lowered my cholesterol, normalised blood pressure, and off all medications. And I am getting better every day at saying "NO thanks!" Thanks for the support and help the no-nonsense advice and support your videos provide. Much appreciated 🙂

    Wow! I'm not alone! I just had my physical today (with a doctor I work for), and when she asked me if I'm eating lots of whole grains, fruit and vegetables, I said I was a carb addict and it would be like letting alcoholics drink "in moderation".

      Getting rid of the vegetable oils is not difficult at all. No one is addicted to Canola oil. Not so with sugar(carbs) if you are honest, is it?

    Dr. Cywes, you are a genius. It took a while, but I am now understanding your philosophy and the science of actual nutrition. In our society we are entirely detached from the concept of eating as merely enough nutrition to keep ourselves going. I'm finding that I often only need or desire one meal per day. Who would have thought?

    Thank you for this video, Dr. Cywes. This is exactly where I am in my journey. Stressors in my life lead me to bad carbohydrate decisions - even if they are ‘keto’ carbs. I feel so bad when I make these choices. I call myself out and call myself out to my husband to justify. I have to choose better options. I have to stay with my positive plan to take evening walks. I have to get back on track. Your videos are so helpful! I will get back to my good place.

    Yes, Dr. Cywes, speaks truth in volumes. Such a straightforward analysis of addictive behavior that simplifies why excuses should not be tolerated... EVER. We face life or death decisions daily.
    Finally for me, honeymoon's over all the ridiculous amount of recipes for PSMF breads, pizzas, puddings, cakes and the like. Working on eliminating too much dairy/cheese, keto shakes, ice cream, etc. that I've allowed to sabotage my healing. Difficult, but doable.

    It has taken 3 years to realise that I am not a carb addict. I certainly was addicted to cigarettes years ago, and I am addicted to not tidying up my house, and even worked out, through meditation, that I am addicted to to compulsive thinking. I had repeatedly cut carbs over 25 years based on Sears' Zone Diet until I couldn't get my weight down at age 76 and started the keto diet and have not looked back. It took effort but I didn't relapse. I like bread and I like ice cream, but I don't have to have them. I've tried the look alikes but found they reduced in attractiveness over the past three years. I'll still make a no carb sweet cake or ice cream for a holiday but the habit of having them at holidays has faded. But I have seen friends and relatives repeatedly fail in just the way you describe here. From blueberries to McDonald's thick shakes. I hear their 'fathead' rationalisations and have begun to really get it how badly these people are suffering. I've worked with drug addicts and my own addictions and completely agree the choice to change habits is the key. I use the Japanese Kaizen approach to start a new habit by doing just a small thing, but doing it every day. I don't think that is the way to stop carb addiction, but realise in retrospect that is close to what I did with the Zone diet over a long time. Three years ago I went from modest carbs to 20gr. That is very different from a case of Coke and 4 sugars in the coffee to zero. The last I knew 20 years ago my South African friends were putting 4 sugars in the tea and coffee. At that time in the late 90s I took no sugar and drank Diet Coke.

    Having a bad fee days. Im a chef. I am addict, pusher and manufacturer of my drug of choice. I try to use these and similar videos to keep myself on course. These last few days its just not working

    Thanks for the truth. I’m trying to process it all at age 61.
    Wow! I see how my parents (who were school teachers) controlled us with sugary treats. Every day after school they gave us stuff to eat and drink that was fast, cheap, available high carb and then sent us on our way so they could have peace off to their hobbies.
    Every holiday’s focus was candy, cookies, cakes or desserts. More cheap and creative diversions from real life situations.
    I tried to change out the carbs and was ridiculed. I was the only one with weight problems and a high I.Q. The normalizing of coveted high carbs was also my husband’s lifestyle. We passed it on somewhat to our obese kids who are obese adults and I am now unable to keep carbs out of my husband’s hands. I’ve cut mine except for rare times but keeping even bread in the house is an hourly battle for me.
    My husband is also addicted to smoking and has no desire to give it or carbs up. I would be causing a raging battle if I suggested it so I just say “For him, when the time is right, he’ll quit” then pray for him and for me to be strong. He is a wonderful husband. P
    Intermittent fasting 16:8 has helped me. I am convinced you are right, sir, in all you have said and taught here, and appreciate it greatly. ⭐️

    as always I feel like your talks are directed at me. How do you know me so well when we have never met? Thank you so much for giving me an explanation for 40 years of being over weight. I don't need to search for that "incident" in my childhood that made me turn to food and become fat. Its so simple. I've been sampling that drug since I was a child and my body mind and soul were completely addicted to it. As soon as you explained it to me I had my answer. I have eliminated that drug from my life, carnivore a year now. Such a simple and satisfying way of eating!! I recently realized I stopped saying "I can't have that" now I say, in my head and to others " I don't WANT that". I handed out Halloween candy this year, gave out all my favorites, snickers reeses m&m's. I didn't WANT any. Thank you! I look forward to meeting you on the cruise.

    This is so true, we need to change our perception of addiction to that of an abusive partner. We recognise it's toxic and destructive. We decide to walk away and never come back because we know nothing will have changed if we do.

    I love black coffee way too much and never found it gross... but, I started drinking it as a little kid and liked bitter tastes even then.
    I do some look alikes, but I limit the main ingredients to eggs, and gelatin (can make those look like almost any baked good). Sometimes I add spices, glycine, butter or cheese.

    After several failed attempts to quit nicotine I finally realized I had trained myself to do nicotine. From that point on every time I had an urge I told myself "of course you want nicotine, you dummy, cause you trained yourself to want it." Over time I untrained myself to not want nicotine. I decoupled my need for nicotine by identifying each situation where I craved it by telling myself I trained myself to behave this way and this helped me get past the urge.

    Lol I guess we could try not to buy carbs for family members ... and watch if they want them that much to go buy them themselves or are lazy enough to not require them :) . If they complain then the answer is "I don't eat it". Even my mum agreed to marry my father only when he agreed that she does NOT buy beer :D (and that he will buy her a washing machine). So if they love you they should hopefully be able to survive "I don't buy carbs" ...

    We have never had coffee in our life. Our go to drink is plain water with Pink Himalayan Salt and electrolytes in all of it. We never drink anything else and never want to drink anything else. Doing just this one thing has helped us greatly !

    Wow I really think your are right on about these Keto products that are claimed to be GOOD! I have nothing in the house I can't eat! thatt was the only way to not "grab" something I shouldn't only hve low carb or no carb foods! Avocado, eaggs, some cheese although not much!

    i eat a small amount of carbs. cook sausage with sauerkraut. eat a few prunes, helps with digestion.
