  • So many people try “keto’ or some concocted version of a keto-type diet based on some internet expert’s “here’s how to do it…”, do great then crash and burn so on to the next diet in an endless search for weightloss magic. This video discusses a more sustainable approach to keto as a lifestyle rather than an instant weightloss diet. We discuss common mistakes that lead to failure and how to avoid or work through these pitfalls so that low carb can become a lifestyle that is with you for the rest of your life.

After 3 years in keto I found “cheat days” and channels that focuses on keto snacks and desserts will kill it. Like Dr. Rob once said “Alcoholics do not celebrate a week of sobriety by drinking a beer” so carboholics shouldn’t celebrate either, just roll with it.

Having a piece of cake in a celebration, or having one meal that have some carbs in them don't destroy anything unless it changes what you do in tge daily routines. What you do in daily basis decides, not what you do four times a year. That's ridiculous.

@@jeniferjohnson374 it can do that. But it doesn't have to do that. As long as I see the low carb thing to be the rest of my life, there isn't much danger taking a piece of cake at a celebration. At least as it's not something that happens every week. But addiction have grades. Not everyone are equally addicted to something. Both when it comes to alcohol and when it comes to carbs and sugar.

I agree with problem with trying to find substitutes for carbs. It's a poor substitute that makes you want the forbidden fruit even more. I do think it's good to find real foods you love versus using crappy tasting low carb alternatives that poorly mimic the real thing. BUT it is nice to know there are alternatives for those times you just can't fight that craving. I've done that for pasta once and I have some in the cupboard if I need to do that again in the future. But that is once in 6 months. Come Thanksgiving, I'll make myself a low carb pumpkin something because I'm going to want a dessert, so I should try to find one that works with eating low carb.
But I 100% agree that it is a slow process of getting there. I actually worry that this big keto push right now will result in a "I tried and and I failed so it doesn't work and therefore the keto diet is crap." When I would be my life that it's not. I finally got there for myself after YEARS of trying to get there. It would have helped if I understood or knew of carb addiction 11 years ago when I started this path.

i have been keto for 16 months... I did go all in all at once and it did work for me personally. But maybe it doesn't work for everyone
I did also do some look-alike foods... but I did eventually come to Doctor C's conclusion that it wasn't working for me.
For me a big mistake is focusing too much on the macros. You don't have to eat extra fat to hit a fat goal. The main thing is reducing the carbs.
Don't be afraid of fat, but if you just eat natural food and learn to trust your instincts and eat until you are satisfied.

I also did it cold turkey, quitting all carbs from one day to the next. Dark chocolate, crackers were my two habits. Other than that, steamed veggies and a meat every single night. That's all I ate. I do, however use look a likes in the way of egg noodles (ketogenic woman's viral noodles), protein rolls (chris cooks Nashville's hotdogs buns that I form into rolls) and ketogenic woman's waffles made with eggs, pork rinds and butter. They are all amazing, and the emotional benefit of baking for myself and my husband is very joyful for me. It gives me no desire for the real thing. I never even ate those things on my regular diet. I just think, no I KNOW, that baking on carnivore is very individual, and it works for me! No carbs included, by the way. Just animal products....

I have been Keto/Carnivore for a year and a half. I have only lost 13 pounds total in that time.... but I did not make this change for weight loss. I made this life style change to get my blood glucose under control. I am a type 2 diabetic. When I was diagnosed I had a blood glucose of 355 and an A1C of 10.5. As of July this year my A1c is 5.8. My blood glucose varies between as low as 75 to as high as 127 (that is usually within an hour of eating). If I get my blood glucose to 5.7 I will no longer be considered diabetic according to the CDC. My goal is to get my type 2 diabetes into full remission and be able to come of the metformin and Glipizide.
I did jump into the deep end all at once. I did not have carb withdrawal until I went Carnivore. I think this was because I fell into the "net carbs" trap.

@@ling20805 Thanks for the suggestion. I am already doing this. There are days I eat 3 times and some times I only eat twice. 18 weeks into my journey (about 13 of them on zero-carb keto), and all my numbers are unbelievable!
The one that I am proudest of is my metabolic age.. started at 53 (I am chronologically 41), went down to 49, 41, and now at 27 as of 4 weeks ago.
I have another BIA test in 2 weeks, and hopefully, I'll be at 18 :-).
Another one was body fat. Went from 25.5% to 24.0% in the first 4 weeks (still on a typical RD-prescribed diet + eating frequency). When I switched to zero-carb keto, that quickly came down to 16.8% body fat 13 weeks later. I'm probably much closer to 10% body fat now; I'll know in 2 weeks for my next BIA test.
And the best part - I am not hungry. I eat until I am full. I don't count calories. I don't measure portion sizes. I eat 80% fat, 20% protein and plenty of cruciferous vegetables. I do 2MAD, and have my 2 glasses of cocktail + 2 bottles of wine between Saturday + Sunday only; water + tea only Monday - Friday, with sparkling water as my bridge drink (and I never liked sparkling water - it's a mental thing).
And I enjoy all the food, with no craving for carbohydrates.
It's something I've found is hard to explain to people that feel carbohydrates are essential. So I tell them that when they are ready to experience it, they will understand it then.

So when I started my journey back to health through diet 18 weeks ago, I went to see an RD who put me on a standard diet (high-carb, low-fat, low-protein), 3 meals a day + 2 snacks in between. I followed that for all of 4 weeks, and even though it worked, the rat-hole I went down trying to understand the contribution of diet toward overall health finally led me to keto.
4 weeks later, I switched to keto, but low-carb, as I was still under the impression that carbs were essential. My favourite carbs were rice, chapati (roti), fries, low-fat flavoured yoghurt, cashew nuts, plain baked cheesecake, dirty burgers, risotto, pizza and beans. Understanding my love for carbs from an emotion-based addiction standpoint, per the Good Doc, I realized that I did not really need them anymore.
What made the transition to zero-carb another 3 weeks later easier, was the fact that I am a foodie, and I just love to eat good food. So keto was perfect for me, because all of the full flavours from fat, salt and meat was the perfect replacement for all of my favourite carbs.
Even though I know just how lovely my carbs will feel in my mouth when I chew or suck on them, I do not miss them or want them at all. Of course, being off them has eliminated my desire for glucose, but it doesn't mean that I have forgotten how lovely they taste. I've simply been able to mentally remember that, as per the Good Doc, while I dearly love my carbs, they beat me up every night to a pulp, when I come home from work. So while I miss the love, I don't miss the broken face anymore.
I realize (and also experience with other keto rookies that I help) that not everyone can go in deep like I did, and recognize the Good Doc's advice of taking it slow, which is why the advice I always give people that I help to start their journey is "Keto is 2% diet, 98% patience". We've been putting carbs through our bodies for decades... helping our bodies to unlearn all of that won't happen in one week, or one month, or even one year. As long as folk are patient about their journey, and continue to enjoy discovering themselves, and re-discovering their love for fat, salt and meat, there is no need to rush the process.
We aren't chasing weight goals or diet challenges on keto. We are creating a healthy, life-long relationship with food that is not only good for our overall health, but that we also actually enjoy eating.
Everybody wants a diet that helps them get healthier without the misery of constant hunger. The problem is most people cannot understand how to do that without carbs... we shall continue to help them, and grow the community, one halloumi cheese slice at a time :-).

I eat at least 5 cups of vegetables daily; non-starchy, practically zero-carb, cruciferous leafy greens.

What a blessing of a video. Started and stopped keto so many times. I have been a Full blown, gave up on life carb addict here. I’ll never move past this. Lose and gain all my life. But intuition knows what to eat just can’t get there till now!!!!
Months back one day had the knowing to Eat hamburger salt and water for 3 days was the nirvana of my life. I felt free from addiction my choice… carbs…living the self inquiry being who I truly am UNTIL headache from hell struck. Brought me to my knees. Have tried again and again.
Woke at 555 this morning knowing it is a process and thought of you. Perfect timing of the video.
Your words of “don’t do the keto plunge” was gold to hear.
Universe knew I needed that nirvana feeling of freedom from hamb salt and water to have a taste of freedom.
Had a dream years ago “transition in the brain takes 21 days”. After this video I KNOW now to set my disciplined withdraw from diet pop, carbs to real foods to full keto. Blessings and love to you and your family. I will be donating to your pay pal. Your knowledge and wisdom is just what I needed this am!💕💕💕💕

Haha, regularly at the dinner table my kids will say "Daddy, are you allowed to have this or that", and initially my response was "no I'm not allowed etc..". These days I correct myself and say "of course I'm allowed anything I want, however I choose not to (have)". In hindsight I've come to realize that small psychological change when eating together has had a much larger impact on the ease with which I maintain my diet.

It would have been good to hear this advice 3 years ago, but I well fat adapted now. My first attempt at keto resulted in bad headaches from hypoglycaemia, may be a lack of salt too. My second (and successful) attempt was more sustained and required frequent visits to the bathroom as my digestive system wasn't used to. But within a month, it all started going smoothly. I had enough conviction about the science behind keto that I stuck it out. I already knew sugar was bad and I naturally have a 'meh' reaction to the taste of rice and bread, so the motivation was there.

What worked for me was to do just what you suggest: stages. It started for me with reducing carbs at breakfast, replacing them with meats/eggs, butter/olive oil, veggies (I include avocado, though it is a fruit). This soon allowed me to eat less often and expand these principles. My cornerstone breakfasts were: kimchi fried rice with an over easy egg (about 1/4 cup cooked rice), omelettes, fritattas, avocado toast with bacon and over easy egg. You can then expand by removing carbs (rice, toast) altogether (and not miss them)! You can expand by moving these principles to other meals (no snacks). If you do it bit at a time you don't miss snacks nor, eventually breakfasts. Avocado needs salt (as do ferments).

I make keto dinner for the family - mostly meat and salad and a few days a week I make low carb veg. Everyone seems happy.

As a chef I am pusher, manufacturer and junkie to my drug of choice. During the pandemic I was able to loose a substantial amount of weight, mainly sitting on the sofa as I was too unfit to exercise.
I use the internet for motivation, almost to the point of religion. Over the last 3 years I have lost over 90lbs but 2 months ago semeglutide was withdrawn by the GP due to international supply issues. I was only on the .5 dose but it took the edge of my appetite. Since then I have put back 10lbs. The only medical advice when the semeglutide was removed was to use more insulin. I have long known that insulin stores fat and this advice felt like a slap in the face. I've been toying with low carb for many years in an on off sort of way but now realise that full keto is probably the only way to get back on track. I am sort of ok most of the time but fail quite dramatically when faced with work related baking. The only way to get through making dessert for work is to taste NOTHING sweet.

One easy tip; "Always save your 'DAILY' bacon grease; FAT...for later addition to your :
Coffee, stews, tea, eggs, everything. This grease/FAT....has been vilified too long.
Most people are NOT going to add 'bacon grease to bacon'...but there's nothing wrong with bacon grease. Also...cook your bacon at lower heat to decrease transfats.
That "slow cooker" is great for cooking beef tips weekly, and then storing them in glass containers...not plastic sh*t. I add the Bacon Fat to my soups, which don't harbor enough grease/fats....very, very satisfying.
I'm also a pundant of NOT using bread grains at all; no pasta, no spaghettis, none. Obviously, people are realizing that "bread grains; with or without refinement,....are ALL utilized and metabolized by OUR bodies....JUST LIKE SUGAR...because "Breads...ARE...are what? They're SUGAR...AND cause the Metabolic Effects taught about here...and elsewhere.
Give your pancrease "a vacation for life".

This one represents an exception whom ever else one also follows at the best of one's will (Ekberg, Berg etc), not only by a doctors somewhat rare means (according to my personal percepton) of focusing on our possible hazards following along with choosing an "anti-carbo-line", but just as much for also representing other very possible issues, included those on the biological front, in a focused and serious manner. A gift not the least for the many who foremost are in need of experiencing not being underestimated. Approaching 60, for instance, one's likely to have lived a long time with thinking "salt and saturated fat means death" and "carbs are OK if you use them wisely", which means that the Keto road might get rather bumpy, even if one gets past the state of "no really notable outcome". Let's think of this gift from Dr. Cywes, though, more like a "do" then like a "don't", as establishing one's orders of reactions is really what it's about as a stayer, often to the exact point that Dr. Cywes deals with it here. Lucky us, finding support for the determination needed, and needed in particular for everyone who not exactly are coming running from an athlete's position.

The biggest obstacle I faced when going Keto (day after Halloween, Nov 1 2021) was giving away all the bad foods I had stockpiled.
Pasta, rice, freezer full of "quick highly processed meals".
The problem I encountered was the guilt of giving these "bad" foods to friends and family, who I still care about. They (apparently) gladly took these foods, even though I felt guilty.
Not so much guilt with giving away the left over Halloween treats (that I used to just finish off over the following weeks).
But... 40 pounds lighter and feeling great (68 years old and now 194lbs.... and dropping) I'm hooked on Keto.
Wife does weight watchers so is close enough to my diet to not be a problem during meals.

If it requires a divorce, new job, move to a new city or area, change of environment, new circle of friends,....whatever it take but get happy. Never be satisfied, never settle for less than the best, but get happy, get happy and working on a plan for the future. YES, took 10 years to get fat, now take ten years to get thin, if it happens sooner, awesome. After you are happy, get blood work and determine baseline health before jumping into a diet. Maybe it’s just me but when I make a commitment, I stick with it. I also went all in with keto and intermittent fasting all at once and it worked for me. I’m also not tempted to eat my partner’s cakes and sweets. If I’m tempted and convince myself I can cheat a little and it’s ok, then it just means I’m not fully committed to what I’m doing. So I don’t commit until I’m all in. I like that I don’t have to run away from certain foods and can be around any food without it affecting and tempting me. It’s probably just me.

I also find PSMF puts me into "seeking" behaviors with food. I feel full enough, but not satisfied somehow. It's weird, and I haven't figured it out. It "should" work. It's a shame, because I really see it work for some people, and wish I could do it. It might have something to do with a rise in insulin. I find when I eat more fatty dairy, like cream cheese and heavy cream, I'm hungrier the next day even though they don't raise my blood glucose more than a few points ever. I wear a continuous glucose monitor, and according to it's readings, high-fat dairy should be an appropriate food for me, but man, does it make me hungrier the next day.

@@annakatrina448 that’s the thing with a lot of these approaches; they should work but for some of us they just don’t work. I reversed my T2 diabetes 2 years ago with keto & fasting but I still have a few more pounds I want to lose. I’ve now stalled out for over a year and am just looking for additional things to kick start the fat loss again. I have been wondering whether in ex-diabetics like me all this lean protein like Maria Emmerich’s famous protein bread is actually causing a massive insulin spikes given that there’s no fat to buffer it. No way of knowing I guess but if there’s even a slight chance that this is what’s happening then I want none of it. Maybe I have to learn to live with my slightly higher weight but being satiated and content with a normal high fat keto diet and be happy my diabetes is reversed. Maybe I just can’t have it all...
