@Lassi Kinnunen 81 bought my 650 Spider nearly 6 years ago at $219k. Current value $170k. So just over 20% in 6 years. The 911 that I had before the McLaren lost that in 2 years. Recommend you read "Competitive Strategy" by Prof Michael Porter to understand the path that McLaren have been on. The F8 is more a competitor for a McLaren 600 imo; the 720 is at least one step up, without even getting into the antique chassis/suspension and (personal opinion about) styling of the Ferrari. For those of us that actually drive these things, there's a great review in Car & Driver September 2019 as to why I'd ONLY buy a McLaren. In that incident, the car flow nearly 300 feet down a cliff and both passengers were uninjured: a floppy Ferrari with its pasta chassis would have folded after the first impact.
No competition between this and the F8 in terms of driving dynamics. I had a 488 Spider before 720S Spider and the Mclaren is superior in terms of steering feel, ride, body rigidity, transmission, and in another galaxy as far as speed! The 488 was very disappointing in terms of how much flex it had in the chassis..... it’s honestly no better than other convertibles that cost 1/4 of its price and the steering has no feel compared to the Mclaren. I won’t go down the rabbit hole of discussing reliablity (mine has been pretty much perfect) or resale value that everyone immediately wants to bring up in any Mclaren review, but as far as just engineering and driving experience I don’t know how anyone could claim the Ferrari even holds a candle to the 720S.

What a fabulous car and great to hear of specialists popping up across the country to look after McLaren's for less than kidney on eBay money. Loved the review.
Great video pointing out the pros and cons of an amazing vehicle. One thing that surprised me was the news, to me anyway, that McLaren buys in their engines. If only they offered the 4-year guarantee + the 7-year maintenance as Ferrari does, the 720s would be a more attractive package.
Throughly enjoyed this one, thanks. Completely agree with you on the 720S vs F8. One tip, when you put the roof down, you can raise the rear window and it helps significantly with wind buffering.
Launch control proper needs to have the throttle pressed to the floor for longer than that Harry. The dash display shows the boost pressure building so you leave the line on boost. Probably would have just resulted in a bit more opposite lock a bit further up the road 😂

Great choice! Such a shame the 12C got a bashing soon after launch. I guess it wasn't quite ready for market. I did a little research before doing the video and discovered McLarens in general hold their value much better in Germany than the UK and plenty do big mileage over there too. Here in the UK, we love to bash home product and are stupidly sensitive to mileage compared to EU owners. I suggest using the cars more regularly might also help make them more reliable..

The Supra was a white-knuckle ride and I did it for about 4 seconds before slowing down while the M5 was almost as stable as parked. (It may just be due to front alignment though.) Brilliant and classy as always, best motoring journalist out there by far.
Such quality videos best of the bunch by far.
You can actually feel Harry's enjoyment when driving this car - great video - and a real driver's car
Made my day @Harry.
Love this but the Huracan engine is something special.
Your reviews are awesome. LJK would be proud.
You're right; it's old, underpowered and about to be regulated out of existence. Great for those who value show over go.
Great engine sound
almost as good as my vacuum cleaner
@@kubek555 your vacume cleaner sounds better than F8.. where did you get from ? I think Harry would be interested in it as well.
I tried Harry’s test route the other day. It is a lot tougher than it looks - but a lot of fun too!
Sharp handling skills there Harry 👌 she went nicely sideways off the line. What a machine
Time to sit down with a beer! Thanks Harry!
By far the most sensible n honest reviewer right now, I was always wondering how they get ALL that power on the road on a two wheel drive well they just can't boot it up n it starts snaking no matter how good the chassis is, but a truly Amazing car
What a fabulous car and great to hear of specialists popping up across the country to look after McLaren's for less than kidney on eBay money. Loved the review.
They have the dealer Rob you blind, because McLaren Rob them blind for oem parts!
I love my Mclaren 720S I enjoy it more than my previous car which was a Ferrari F12
11:35 got to love a bit of ole Citroen suspension on a super car 🚙 😁

Thank you for setting the cameras up so that we can enjoy the drive just by watching.
Another brilliant review, Harry.
The options on this are LUDICROUS! 🤯
Maybe it is the colour, however the panel gap on the door is very visible.. great content Harry 👍🏻
Saw a purple metallic one in Cheltenham this morning. Absolutely STUNNING in the metal!
Launch control proper needs to have the throttle pressed to the floor for longer than that Harry. The dash display shows the boost pressure building so you leave the line on boost. Probably would have just resulted in a bit more opposite lock a bit further up the road 😂
Has a sniff of the Zonda I think with its cab-forward silhouette - nicely proportioned too (prefer it to the Scud' and Raging Bull tbh). Nice review as ever sir.
Clear, concise, informative, thanks again Harry.
Love Harry but no. 11:55 "everything is unique... " Nope. This car has Nissan engine (modified OFC), Ricardo gearbox and they produce engine as well. Until recently not even carbon fiber was made by them - Carbo Tech from Austria. Same with most electronics. And the list goes on.
@@hagestad the point was that major parts aren’t shared through other major competitors. Like the V10 and infotainment shared with the he Huracan and R8. Smaller things aren’t as recognizable.
@@cm-15 sure they are. It's a Nissan engine and Ricardo gearbox. Magically they don't use it in anything else?
@@hagestad What McLaren competitors share parts with mclaren? Or how many McLaren parts are used by several other companies? The answer is none or not that much. That was Harry’s point. Harry also explained in another comment about how that engine is purpose built for McLaren unlike others that are shared.
@@cm-15 Ricardo gearboxes are used by ford and Mercedes. Ferrari as well i think (or perhaps they use getrag). Akebono ceramics are used quite often in high end cars.
I don't watch videos about cars and stuff but Harry's videos are far more than just cars. He is a class man and also makes me feel that I might consider buying one of the cars he is presenting whereas I can't even afford orange stitches. I like that he shows to us that these are above all things and not a matter to boast about. He just treat it as normal as for instance a Fiat 126 that I owned years ago. Pleasure to watch. Thanks Harry.
Yet another quality video from Harry.
The footage of him demonstrating the launch control is epic, as is the sound from the exhausts. If there really is such a thing as reincarnation, I want to come back as Harry Metcalf! 😁
Watching that thing take off was awesome. The way it was fighting to put as much power down on a highly variable surface, looks like fun.
As ever Harry great review. I have the original 12C Spider in silver (too old for orange)
Phenomenal piece of kit
Good points - performance- handling- tub- suspension- roof- tasteful- almost practical- track day and Tesco’s !
Bad points - not much - small annoying fails- fuel latch, weather seals- AC faults- wiper arm and spoiler mount corrosion- IRIS system- factory tracker.
Top tips - change clutch oil/filter- fit AllTrac- service and warranty with Thorney Motorsport
Drive it like you mean it.....🏎💨
Great choice!
@@harrysgarage Agreed. I actually don’t mind that it gets bashed I find it rather amusing and it’s predominantly by the uninitiated.
As Frank S would say ‘it’s an optimally engineered, efficiently innovative design with a small foot print, shrink wrapped in surface metal with a racing development. It’s in motion when it’s parked. Less is More’.
And as it says on my own coffee mug ‘please don’t confuse your google search with my engineering degree’ 🏎💨
Mclaren are becoming more and more like luxury yachts...meaning that you love the day you buy it and then the day you finally manage to sell it
What an insight remark about McLaren doing a Porsche GT-esque range instead of "shooting themselves in the foot"
Nothing like a Harry's Garage video to better your day! Even if I could justify the price, McLaren's reputation for excessive depreciation, maintenance and repairs - and the pricing thereof - makes the brand a solid PASS.
Possibly your best video yet, certainly one of the best cars. Love the channel, keep em coming!
“That was quite a lot of opposite lock”😂🤣
Great informative balanced review Harry as ever, fantastic to watch and enjoy
I really prefer the light design on the McLaren to the Ferrari , I feel that sometimes people are afraid to call Ferrari’s boring. But that’s what I would say about the lights on the Fezza.
All subjective I know!
In my view, one of the prettiest McLarens ever made - stunning in the orange livery..
"If you look in the classifieds, these are starting to look very attractively priced"
Nope, still far too expensive for little ol' me.
Check out the 650s or 12c instead ;)

Harry’s Garage is THE car review site, bar none.
The 540/570 series opened up the brand to ordinary folks and younger buyers ( e.g. three year monthlies contract )
Great honest review without crazy driving , power slides and burn outs.
Strange how the best TH-cam reviews involve the names, Harry, Henry and Harris 🤔
Great vid as ever and interesting views on McLaren GT range. Nice to see the new Yaris with a slot in the barn.

Seatbelt Clips... They take their time designing and building a stunning car with state of the art componenets but they install really cheap looking seatbelt clips into the car.. My favorite line as well.
I've never seen Metcalfe at the point of tears over the beauty of the steering. Perhaps it's time to finally sell my manual F430 spider? The only car I've never gotten a speeding ticket in?
how fast were you going over?
@@larssonk22 I've had two tickets for doing 110mph in the US, once in KS where it's no biggy, just mail $100 to the clerk, and once in MO where it could have been a month of jail time. This was 25 years ago though so things change. Both on I-70. In Germany I've had both my MkIV Supra Turbo and my E39 M5 at about 250. The Supra was a white-knuckle ride and I did it for about 4 seconds before slowing down while the M5 was almost as stable as parked. (It may just be due to front alignment though.) I've had the F430 only up to about 225kph or something, in Japan, 10+ years ago, on a totally empty highway except for the R35 I was pulling on. This was about 2009 so it wasn't one of the later higher-power models, just one of the early ones. I had an R35 briefly and insane from a standing start, but starting both the F430 and R35 at about 40kph, and having the F430 in a really low gear (2nd or maybe even 1st?) and keeping it between 6000 redline, I gained about 2 meters on the R35 between 40kph and 225kph. When I had the R35 I drove for a half-hour at the 190kph redline on utterly empty highways where I didn't see another car, but again 15 years ago. I'm old now. I go slow.
Maybe 911 gt3 touring is the one: NA, manual, high revs.
Are there any other car like it produced today?
Yes, I look forward to a road review of the latest variant.
Really enjoyed this Vlog , so much detail and background information .
Not that I could afford one, I'd like to see McLaren build a light four cylinder sports car ala Lotus. Something super simple in the Elan tradition ie minimalist. And no whacky body shaping, just a simple form.
Agree with you re light four cylinder sports car but I'd prefer to see Gordon Murry's new company develop an affordable light weight sports car. Instant success story!
@@superseven7947 - There is no reason to state it would be an "instant success," nor can I see why it would be preferable to a McLaren, or least of all affordable as they don't have significant manufacturing capability. (PS The topic here is McLaren.)
I'm just saying as a viewer, I don't mind a lack of eye contact whilst driving.
The synched audio commentary and exterior driving bits are ace.
Hi, Harry. Is it possible for you to book a Mazda MX-5 RF or the regular convertible?
