Why does God want us to dress modestly? How do we even come up with a definition of modesty? Is modesty defined by the culture in which we live? Are pants permissible for women?

I now wear skirts that fall between my ankles and knees and I wear loose leggings under them. (Except on the Sabbath when I wear long skirts). I have so much work to do outside and in the house and now that I am 70, I am prone to getting wrapped up in my long skirt and falling face-first. (How embarrassing.) Wearing longer skirts that do not go all the way to my ankles have saved me from many falls, but I am more comfortable wearing modest leggings under the dresses. The leggings keep me warm in the fall, winter and early spring months, plus being modest . (We live 7000 ft up in the mountains in the West.) I also cover my hair, the only one in our community to do so. Thank you for sharing this lesson on modesty.

Thank you sisters for posting this message on modesty. I am an Indian Mennonite retired bishop. I am personally blessed. I would like to add two poits. 1. In Gen. 3, modesty is needed because of the presence of sinful eyes. 2. In Song of songs 2:7; 3:5; 8:4; daughters are urged not to arouse love in any way. So here also modesty is urged. Thanks again for this message.
Traditional Catholic women also wear modest long skirts and dresses and veil their hair during worship. Just thought they should be added to your list. 😊 Thank you for having the courage to share this message on here. You presented it in a very beautiful way. ❤
The entire presentation and discussion has excellent counsel for women. I particularly appreciated some of the remarks near the 1:24:20 mark about having a form of modesty in dress and head covering that still feels attainable and possible to someone is accustomed to modern store bought clothing but is feeling inspired to dress more at a level of biblical modesty. I went through a few years where I only wore plain dress that had "home sewn" look. As I currently attend a church that is not Anabaptist, I sometimes wear traditional cape dresses, and other weeks I try to wear a modest equivalent that looks more "store bought" -- with the hope that I can be a suitable role model for younger women in my church. I don't want my form of modest dress to be so singular that the assumption would be that one must have Anabaptist in family heritage to dress in a simple and modest style.
When God created birds he gave the males colorful plumage and a more aggressive spirit so they could pursue territory and a female in order to mate. The female bird, on the other hand, God gave more subdued and camaflaged 'clothing' to protect her from predators throughout her lifespan and especially during her vulnerable period of caring for young. It is the male birds we hear singing to establish territory. The females have a quiet and humble spirit. Both sexes in the bird world work tirelessly to raise their young until they are able to leave their nests. The males are very protective towards any animal who gets too close to their nests. We could learn a lot about God's order of things from the natural world. Dear God, give us eyes to see!
Also, speaking as a retired nurse, I have seen that when forced to wear hospital gowns, women are much more modest than men are. My personal opinion is that God made us by nature to be more modest to protect us, because He LOVES us! A culture that promotes revealing and alluring garments, makeup, and jewelry, does not wish us well, but on the contrary, reduces females to sex objects to attract the wrong kind of attention, only to be used and abused. We live in a culture that expoits the weaknesses of women and dishonors them and it starts at a very early age. We have no shame.
We have turned into a Godless culture. I applaud any female who acts and dresses modestly in accordance to her conscience and to her understanding of scripture. And I applaud any male who will lovingly encourage women to dress and act modestly. Let us of neither sex be boasters and proud. Nothing we have is our own. All is a gift from God including modesty.
Thank you Laura for sharing your knowledge on this very timely subject. As women, the way we dress and speak can be very powerful ways to spread the gospel. It shows the world that we have indeed repented and turned from our worldly ways and have put our hope not in this world, but in the Heavenly Kingdom.

Your Word is so good. I heard spirit the key is modesty and I consider myself to dress pretty modestly. However, your word on being a heart poster is spirit filled.
To have “authority over” Means to have control over. Take control over your head. 😊THAT makes sense!

I started to cover my head without asking my husband, because the LORD told me. So now he is used to it and the Lord used it for a blessing for our marriage and even to him. We don' t have to obey our own husbands more then God. So we have to obey God more then people... This can be hard, but still we as women have to stand alone before the throne one day... And beside, how should we be protected before the angels, without any covering - only for the reason our husband "don't like it" ?

can you do a talk on the religious relationship with food? i'd like help in properly honoring and respecting what i eat with intentionality. the abundance of food has erased a daily touch point for gratefulness in society, to the point that now people don't care if what they eat is even real
I am a man listening to a blessed talk from women who cares about serving the Lord . May God bless all women that are example of modesty. I personally don't see the head covering as you do from the word. To me long hair is the covering but I respect your view.
Read 1Cor. 11:4-15 again. This time pay special attention to verse 6.
If long hair is the covering and a woman cuts her hair short, thereby leaving her uncovered, Paul says the punishment for not covering is to cut the hair short.
But how do you apply the punishment of cutting the hair short when the hair is already cut short?
Next look up the Greek word for the covering for prayer, it is katakalupta.
The word kalupta and it's derivatives in the Septuagint, always refer to a cloth covering of one kind or another.
When those who spoke koine Greek heard Paul use the word kalupta, they all understood it to mean a cloth covering.
Kata means hang down, thus a translation of katakalupta would read a cloth covering that hangs down.
The Greek word for covering used for long hair, is peribolaion. A totally different word and meaning from katakalupta.
When I was in my 20s I wanted to dress modestly but I couldn't find modest shirts or dresses available to buy. The shirts were mostly for sale to show clevage through low cut v necks everywhere. I still find it a challenge to find modest clothing.

The authority of God’s word is a higher authority than man. An unbeliever should see his wife’s obedience to the Word which shows her chase and submissive behavior.

We can teach modesty from infancy especially to our girls. Its in the daily language. As you dress your infant or toddler as a daughter of God what shall we wear today? My daughter dressed my grand daughter always in leggings of some kind under dresses. Collarbone necklines. Its how you approach the subject. Begin as soon as possible teaching honor in modesty without teaching it as body shaming.
It’s somewhat of a chore to find affordable modest clothes. Dresses have no sleeves and midi skirts are these tight clingy knit skirts. I haven’t been sewing lately. I may have to take it up again, but it’s not as thrifty as it once was.

Yes I wanted add, please if you will, for the person who is concerned with her husband not agreeing with the Biblical standard and doctrine which is in tune GODS undiluted word and commandment, she must know and strongly believe in modesty and decently, and Godly dressing. So that an unbelieving husband, or boss, or family member or even stranger will not lead her astray.
Now, she must know that Christ our God almighty is even the HEAD of her husband TOO and what God says we do, goes first before any man husband or not... Just because she must submit to her husband doesn't not mean she submits to a man of sin and beguilement.

But there is one thing I want you to know: The head of every man IS Christ, the head of woman is man, and the HEAD OF CHRIST IS GOD.
God is the head of her husband, God is truly commanding women to cover her hair, her husband has NO authority to bombard that decision and cause her to stop doing what God commands her just because she must submit. No.
Yes, submit as the bible says, but only submit to the degree of what God agrees with that is coming from her husband.
If what her husband tries to command her to do something that DOES NOT agree with biblical standards or righteousness and holiness, modest and decency then she must be as stubborn as a rock to the directive of sin and don't compromise. Yes. This how Satan will try persuade those weak in faith and new to the holy doctrine to turn away from the path of light.
We don't submit to the government when the govenermt may encourage us to commit sin against God, yet the bible says obey your government. But obey the righteous laws.

If your husband is not having head covering understanding, Gods decision stands firm. Discuss it with your husband how you feel it honors him and shows submission to his authority not just God. Some women ease in out if live by covering only during prayer.

GOD Told us our hair is our glory,the only reason for hair covering if you like or and choose to be modest that way because men put your hair along with the body to lust liking you or not. The reason for covering is when we're in prayer.

In traditional Chinese woman after delivering baby should cover head for a while otherwise cause headaches. This head covering make me think maybe good in so many ways and things which we don’t understand yet to much

A husband cannot expect his wife or daughters to dress modestly if he is not dressing modestly himself.
Modesty should be the first requirement young Christians and their parents look for before any dating is allowed.
While people can speak with a silvery tongue and mislead even the elect, their physical actions and dress will always non verbally reveal the truth that is within.
I disagree. The issue is about _your_ submission to God's will, which has nothing to do with what anyone else - spouse, parents, friends, relatives, colleagues, clients - might do or say. You cannot excuse yourself from your obligations just because someone else doesn't live up to theirs.
@@Berean_with_a_BThIts about being considerate of how our actions can affect others. Immodesty is an issue of Pride. When we are immodest while claiming that we are Christian. We are misleading people. We aren’t presenting ourselves as a holy image of God. In todays world a lot of Modern Christian women ignore modesty. They use the term of modesty being an issue of the heart as an excuse to continue being immodest.
I am not condoning in anyway disobeying God therefore I believe it is very needful for us to understand that when we are obeying our husbands we are in essence obeying God whether our husband be wrong or right we are to obey them as the Lord because our husband is our head

When we think about Sarah she obeyed Abraham when Abraham told her to tell Pharaoh that she was his sister yes she was his half-sister but she was his wife yet she obeyed Abraham

I do truly believe that this is why there needs to be a more comprehensive teaching about females and how to wait on the Lord for a Godly husband how to pray for a Godly husband
To the woman that wrote in with that question if I were you I would obey my husband and while obeying my husband I would be in prayer for my husband I would be fasting and I would be pleading with the Lord to change my husband's heart toward the head covering
I have a dear friend Joan she was abused by her unsaved husband throughout their entire marriage he would be drunken and beat her and abuse her terribly and the church people would counsel her to leave her husband and she would always say I took a vow that I would love him and honour him and obey for better or for worse so I am praying for him to come to the Lord Jesus Christ
And many years later her husband came to the Lord Jesus and became one of the greatest soul winners that we have known he would be in hit the street with his guitar singing hymns and preaching the gospel to passers-by and many souls came to the Lord Jesus through Joans husband
The first lesson Lord taught to His creation was to make modest clothes by disapproving revealing what they made. God has not changed, He is the same forever. More revealing clothes have brought rape, sex trafficking, and sexual assault. Your body and yes only you can take care of it since we are free to choose.
Remember why God made enough clothes for the people who knew nothing about cloth. The answer is simple, to cover the body. Cloth is simply made to cover and if you are revealing then go to the Lord He will show you the standard since HE started the clothes code, not a worldly designer.

To add I don't see God putting a covering on Eve long hair as well as it is not fitted for men to have long hair mentioned in the word...
Now I wonder what you think about women wearing pants to work with cattle...wearing a skirt riding a horse would be difficult.....
So I have no problem with pants but I know women who do. One of them lives the farm life and rides horses but I've never asked her what she does when riding! That's a very good question.
