I've watched someone's vlog regarding Japanese having relationships with foreigners online to brag about them having a "foreigner" girlfriend/boyfriend. This is just sad especially if the foreigner is being serious about the relationship. So lesson here is, don't take it seriously unless you've already met each other in person. Maybe not in general, but mostly.

Saying I love you for Japanese people it’s too heavy for them.... they are not that too expressive to their feelings. In my case, my Japanese boyfriend has said sukidesu rarely. Can you imagine we have been in relationship as a gf/bf for almost three years. Luckily, I am grateful that he said “愛しています" during christmas and addition to it we're celerating our 3rd Anniversary too🥰
He’s busy at work but he tried to give me his short break time by having a video call. I really appreciate it even just for ten minutes of conversation.
    Merry Christmas Santisan and everyone.

I encountered a Japanese guy through online before in a language exchange app. We had great conversations all the while and my language exchange buddy. He said all the time that he was happy talking witg me as I was teaching him English. One time, he told me he liked me. I was surprised because we had chatted for only a month. Later on, he blurted out, I love you! I told him, he's kinda fast and surprising. I told him that saying I love you has a deeper meaning. He turned quiet for a bit. I heard him chuckled a little.

By the way, I understand that it’s not normal to say I love you because it’s not your custom but, wouldn’t it be nice to tell your mother I love you so she can hear it and feel it, opposed to when she’s no longer here to hear it?

In my country we don’t say “I love you” to our family members but it’s totally fine. For us it’s more important to show our love by actions and we don’t need to hear that actually. I know that my parents and siblings love me and they know that I love them and that’s enough. Maybe it sounds surprising but I would feel weird if my mum or dad came to me and said “I love you” directly. And they would feel the same)

Ruth, I'm sorry if I did that. but again, it depends. I don't know your bf/husband so it really depends on a person but in general, no.
About saying I love you to mom, hmmm, how about this? if your dad grab your butt whenever he hugs you, isnt it weird? You might say, it is no appropriate.
However if I say, "in my country and majority in the world, we grab each other's ass as greeting in a family. It feels so good, and normal. Why don't you ask your dad to do so?"
lol ok,, I know its very awkward example, but, whenever foreigners ask Japanese friend to say I love you to their mom or dad as they do, we would get similar feeing as you just got now. :)

I'm in the U.S. and I have been talking to a Japanese student for a few weeks and we went on our first date recently. He told me the college he is at now has a Japan campus and he dated an American girl before there so his English (in my opinion) is pretty good and we have pretty much no communication problems. On the phone the other night he goes "You're so cute, I love you!" and I was like "??????" because we have had one date and even my past bf's have never gotten to the point of "I love you". I was wondering if it was a cultural thing and he got excited or a huge red flag. After the shock wore off I made sure to asked him that is what he said and meant and I said "Well I love has deep meaning in the US." he nicely asked me what he can say and I said "I like you" is acceptable. he said "I like you sounds a little cold to me". Everything was settled but it still sits on my mind he doesn't seem to fit any other things you have mentioned about Japanese men on this channel so maybe he is just a funny guy. So far he has respected every boundary I set nicely. Hopefully, it was just a hiccup.

Yeah this too. My ex would always say it and it was true because I taught him how to say it properly with emotion. But, this newer guy I talked about hasn’t even confessed on the 3rd date at all. He texts me every other day sometimes it takes hours to respond but he still texts. Also, he says my name in Japanese not in katakana like most people do. I thought it was unusual. Does that hold a special meaning to put my name in hiragana? And in the beginning, he texted me a lot but now, not so much anymore and he just says he’s busy most of the time… You are the only channel I can trust for native Japanese social cultural advice which is really hard to find on the internet now a days. So, it would be appreciated if you could help me out with this situation because I’m tired of worrying about this guy. If you want, I can send a photo of his texts too. Also, he never initiated touch. But, he would always allow me when I asked. I always ask people before touching them first. But he just felt stiff or didn’t inch closer to me. Maybe while I held his arm but, when I held his hand, it wasn’t a strong grip.

Reminds me of my ex. One thing I learnt is Japanese men can be very very persistent. And even if you reject them once, they will still try, or at least that’s my ex. When we were together he even said ‘I love you’ in Japanese! Thought it was real but guess it’s not a heavy word for him.
Anyway, after watching your video about divorced men and women, and the studies showed the second marriage ends up in divorce is about 60%... guess I dodged a bullet there lol! Lucky me.

Hi Santi you're really funny but I like your honesty. This is a cultural thing sometimes people misinterpret- things and they say things they don't mean anything but you're right when people say I love you to a girl does not necessarily mean it is LOVE to the opposite sex. There are different kind of LOVE first Love to GOD then LOVE to the opposite sex, to family and friends and love for people in general. So, I what I will say to the girl because your have deferent culture it is for you to make sure and clarify what he meant when he said those words she might just misinterpret it because he likes the guy but it is a different story when you are in a serious relationship.
