      I think desktop icons are the worst offender for visual cleanliness you can have on your setup. I myself make my whole UI custom from scratch on linux and after that using windows with all the stupid little buttoms and visual flare that just jumps in your eyes kills it for me but need to use it for gaming haha. I know some people don't just care/see them the same way but for me my desktop being clean is super important.

    The keyboard position at 6:20 you're talking about started to become popular back in the CRT monitor era, though back then that was with the keyboard sitting on your lap. Done mostly to have more room for your big monitor and to have room to move your mouse.

    I used a 40% keyboard for a while at my desk job. For most everyday stuff it was fine, but you will have to learn how to use layers and it will take a few days to find a good layer setup that works for you. In an office environment, the biggest struggle for me was trying to remember which symbols where on the which number key.
    There are several drawbacks that make gaming extremely difficult on a 40%. No number row kills most FPS games. Even if you rebind weapons to cycle using the mouse wheel, many games have important items bound on numbers 1-5 that aren’t cycled with your weapons. Losing the number row also means losing (or relocating) the two modifiers from that row. Since Caps Lock is pretty useless despite sitting on the home row, most people move it to a function layer. Tab, Control, and Shift are pretty important for most games so relocating any of them from their normal position really messes with your muscle memory. That probably means putting Escape on the home row modifier, which take some getting used to. Layers and special tap/hold key function become important on tiny keyboards, but those are not really compatible with gaming. For ortho 40s like the one in the video, The 2u spacebar in the center is also a bit of a problem is when you play games with WASD, as your hand is shifted over one column. The little 2u spacebar is not too much of a problem when typing normally, but becomes an uncomfortable stretch when gaming. There are some 40s that have double 2u spacebar support, which alleviates this problem. You also lose dedicated F keys, which can be a problem for some games. 1u modifiers are certainly useable for gaming, but it can be slightly disorientating when finding the modifiers vs the alpha keys. It is possible to use a 40% keyboard for gaming, especially if you change your keybinds in game to work around the limitations of the layout, but it is going to be too much of a hassle for most people and most games.
    All that being said, I highly, highly recommend trying ortholinear for gaming (and typing). If you want to try a smaller otholinear board for gaming, I would recommend a 50% like the Preonic with 2x2u spacebar support, or RGBKB’s Pan keyboard. If you want to bump it up to 60%, the Boardwalk pcb offers several excellent layout options.

    I don't think the desktop icon flood is entirely intentional. Sometimes when you don't prevent installers from creating them actively they'll just spam your desktop. But honestly, what are we even doing with desktop icons anymore? Programs you want in quick access you'd add to the taskbar anyway, everything else is just clutter. And (for me anyway) the desktop is hidden behind multiple program windows at all times, to the point that it doesn't even make sense for me to pick a background image 😛

    Been using a dactyl manuform for a while that is about the equivalent of a 40% keyboard. I don't really miss anything with the layer shifts available. For example instead of reaching up and moving my wrist/palm to hit 1,2,3,4 etc I hold down a layer shift with my thumb, and asdfg becomes 12345 while qwert becomes f1, f2, f3, f4, f5. Other things include a gaming layer toggle with crouch and jump buttons under my thumb to avoid having to do finger yoga while crouching and walking forward for example. Much less movement of the entire hand, and in the end, quicker as well as more comfortable for me.
    If you ever go down the custom keyboard/qmk rabbit hole, I'm excited to see what you come up with and of course I'm happy to help too. The community is really supportive in general.

    many 40% keyboards capitalize on QMK features and the bottom row is almost exclusively layer buttons - you toggle or shift up and down layers like a caps lock, but turn the layout to numbers, characters, hell you could have a dedicated gaming layer and remap all the buttons to whatever you need them to be

    If you want to try out a 40%, I'd recommend a Vortex Core. May not be the most aesthetic board out there, but its a great starting point for learning how to use a 40%. The keycaps have the alternate functions printed on them, so you don't need to commit them to memory. The board is programmable, so you can change layers and keybinds to tweak it to your liking. As far as playing games, I'll rebind keys to something not hidden behind a layer or bind a function to a mouse side button.

    • @SupperGammer
      @SupperGammer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd disagree a little. DIY is the main reason to go sub 60%, the point is to memorize as it's faster and nothing helped me more than getting blank keycaps. I would suggest getting something ergo, either unibody or proper split as ortho and row staggered 40ies kinda kill your wrists. I suggest Reviung41 or cornelius style boards for getting used to them or just go basic and get a Corne build. There are also some sub 60% alice type boards that are nice looking and might be a little more familiar to what most people are used to. From there it's just some days of tweaking in QMK to get the layers and taphold functions to act how you want them and a good layer setup and you're on your way. I personally daily a modified Reviung39 have layers for daily use and general stuff and a layer for gaming where I can toggle to a numpad right under my WASD pretty much instantly so it's all really fast and easy to reach. Cheers!

    • @threepe0
      @threepe0 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd have to respectfully disagree with the suggestion as well; If you're going to go 40, you may as well go ortho as well, and doing either seems like a waste or asking for problems if you don't also leave yourself the customizability that comes with QMK or ZMK. This way you're not pidgeon-holed into specific layouts or functionality. QMK is really amazing and has made the ergonomic switch worth it for me.

      @@threepe0 how I summed up 40% boards and ergo boards made with QMK to my friends was - you make yourself a problem by removing most keys but the solutions you find to make it usable again turn out to be way better than how it was before you made a problem for yourself.

    Most of the western people would make fun of this guy. Hats of to you for showing that guy some respect. That's what I love about this channel.
    For people who don't know, India has higher import taxes on pc components which makes it harder to even afford a decent gaming pc, spending a whole lot of money on such stuff isn't a good investment for us. Language barrier is another concern for us to start streaming on a global basis, I can write pretty well but can't speak as fast as a western people could.

    I have a question in regards to you comment about mic setups: why do streamers need to have them almost in their face at all times at least in view of the camera, but in film boom mics are a foot or so out of the shot and still get great audio. also where is your mic in this scene? does it really cost a lot of money to have great recording quality while keeping them out of view?
