  • New Singapore national football coach Tsutomu Ogura believes the key to beating China is to work harder than them, as he puts his players through intensive training ahead of their World Cup Qualifier at the National Stadium. His players are feeling the difference and say they will benefit in the long term. Aslam Shah reports.

    In Singapore, the widespread habit of sending children to tutoring classes after school creates a significant hurdle for nurturing football talent. This deeply rooted tradition presents a tough challenge: How can Singapore overcome this barrier and propel its national soccer team toward qualifying for the World Cup?

      I concur.
      One of the most important reasons why Singapore can not thrive as a sport nation is the basis is not there, it is not being grown. It is not working to be willing to host big sporting events. You also must do something and participate yourself.
      Look at PE in schools ... pathetic.

      singapore needs to learn from japan and korea. those guys place a premium on education as well but they produce the best footballers in asia these days. you have a japanese coach now, but it's better to learn how they do it at grassroots level.

      To a healthy mind belongs a healthy body. Bringing a coach from Japan in, or Chinese table tennis players, that does not improve physical abilities of the people.

    Ping Pong Olumpics proved effective. Best to replace whole team with new citizens of eg. china with potential for greatness. This is the most efficient way of governancr. To keep them on their toes, there should be punishment if they dont win. If they win, free B&W bungalow stays for certain period of time

    Looking at Singapore's past year's performance where they were trounced by Malaysia 7-0 in the Sea Games on 11 May 2023, and similarly trounced again by South Korea 5-0 on 16 Nov 2023 during the World Cup Qualifiers for Asia, Singapore would be doing well not to be whitewashed by China and avoiding another zero.

      The bulk of the team is still the same old bunch. These old players don't really have proof much or even play well to earn a national team call up. That's the main problem, their place are pretty much secured. The new coach needs to set up a culture where only the best performing players and are in form and good fitness gets the chance to play at the national level.

      @@splashmoby while I might agree a few players are debatable with uncalled players, the main bulk of the current squad is really the best available selections we have (minus our mixed heritage players overseas without a Singapore passport) the only realistic change we can expect to see will only come in say 5 years when LCS academy, NDC and SYL programs come to fruition.

    • @splashmoby
      @splashmoby หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@user-bo6fy6fm5q That is fair enough. We'll see how the lions perform tonight. It is really now up to the players and the coach to get the fans rallying behind them once again. Hopefully we'll see more promising players coming through the youth academies, the ones in recent years can barely make it. There are talks about many young overseas players, one of them is an english based player with singapore passport if I'm not wrong, can't recall the name but from what I heard he has no intention to represent singapore, they are even in the process to renounce their citizenship and avoiding NS obligation.

      Schools lor, make mini interclass tournaments, then scout the good players to represent schools, and the ones who excel can play at age group clubs of the spl. But sadly no one really wants to focus on youth development. The sports school project hardly produced any quality players within the ranks.
