In addition to the parallels between the Riddles/Malfoys/Dursleys, I also see parallels between Hagrid and Frank Bryce. Both were set up by Tom Riddle for crimes that they did not commit and both stayed on the grounds of the place that the crime was committed.
I used to wonder about the one more murder thing a lot, but it seems like that was just a mistake, because they changed it: In my new book it says "Bertha Jorkins's disapperance will not go unnoticed for long, and if we proceed, if I CURSE [...] come, Wormtail, one more OBSTACLE REMOVED and our path to Harry Potter is clear"
I'm not sure if it's a mistake or an American edit thing. What edition is your most recent one? I listened to the Stephen Fry UK audiobooks, which to my knowledge has not been updated since the first UK edition, and that said "curse" and "obstacle", but a US PDF I found which seems to be the first, or one of the first, editions say "murder" and J and Ben bought new books for this. Even if they haven't updated the text within the Brian Selznick covers since their release they would still be up to date as of the 20th anniversary when those released.
@Blixthand you're right, that's also possible, although I would consider it a mistake in that case as well 😂🙈. I have the British version of the book, but listen to Jim Dale. So that would fit.
@@BlixthandI think it’s both - it’s an American edit thing, and it’s a mistake. This has driven me crazy for years - I’ve read and re-read this book dozens of times (it’s my favorite!) and no, there is no planned murder at this point… when I found out the British version said “curse” everything made so much more sense. It’s wild they haven’t fixed it in the US versions after all this time!
This makes me think that Barty Crouch, Sr. is the intended victim of this "curse"/"murder" controversy even more because he is Imperious'd for most of the book.

It is interesting that Harry's vision from Voldemort (as well as his second vision later in the year during his devinition class) is different from the visions he has in the fifth and in the seventh book. In these later books he sees everything through Voldemort's eyes and feels his feelings but right now he seems to be just an observer of the scene (while he can't see Voldemort himself). I wonder wether this change of his point of view is caused by the fact that Voldemort has got his body back or because the bond between them has doubled because Voldemort took Harry's blood.
Riddle House Owner - my interpretation of this was that it was the Ministry or Dumbledore. They knew that Frank was innocent as they believed Morfin had committed the murder, and so I've thought that either the Ministry or Dumbledore bought the Riddle House to ensure that Frank would still be employed and wouldn't become destitute because of a wizard's actions
@@arthurdoktor Perhaps there was an honest attempt to let things move on, but once it was clear that people weren't staying (or it was cursed) and they acted to make sure the innocent man wasn't made destitute
My understanding of Voldemort accusing Peter of lying when he says he thought Bertha Jorkins might be useful is that Peter is basically a 3-stooges level minion, just stumbling into helping. So he gets himself caught at a bar, and lures or kidnaps her back to wherever he and Voldemort are hiding just because he knows he can’t let her go now that she knows he’s alive but he can’t actually kill her. He’s essentially rescued by baby Voldemort who can barely hold a wand, and Voldemort is the one who decides to question her before killing her.
I was on the local news while waiting for this book to release at midnight. I made friends and pal'd around with the reporter's son, who was around my age. How many chapters have extended periods that aren’t from Harry’s POV? The first chapter in Sorcerers Stone, this chapter, and when Belatrix and Narcissa visit Snape?
@@Colinkrauss1 definitely seems like its a first chapter sort of thing then. In which case Narcissa's visit to snape is probably the most unique as its later in the book.
I think Voldemort still looked pretty non-human before trying to kill Harry: He is described as much different than his handsome self when he interviewed for DADA job and on the night he tried to kill Harry the kids trick-or-treating say “Nice costume mister” which clearly makes it seems he looks like something unnatural.
I can see voldemort getting some sick pleasure in the first war out of calling peter wormtail. Like a power play of "oh, your friends called you this? How amusing i think i shall take that and pervert it" and just keeping in the habit.
I agree that it is pointed humiliation. Calling wormtail by his marauder name is constantly reminding him of his only friends, whom he betrayed. I'm sure voldemort is disgusted by wormtail both as a weakling coward, and as a betrayer.
Does anyone else want merch with a cow instead of Voldemort facing Frank, or a cow wandering around the house in the dark? This episode was so funny and as usual a fantastic deep dive! Thank you to the whole team!
The "One Death" mentioned is not a specific person, but merely the death required for Voldemort to make Nagini a Horcrux. Perhaps he knew he wanted a another Horcrux to get to the 7-part soul before his return, and thus needed an excuse to get a kill in. As such, Frank Bryce ended up being the "1 death" before the path to Harry Potter was clear.
I believe Bertha was the death that they used to make Nagini a horcrux. I’m wondering if the revival potion they use requires the one who is to be revived to have a torn soul, so they can offer a piece as a sacrifice for regeneration. Or that he wanted to be ready to prepare another horcrux after nagini.
I always liked the description of the Riddle house and the rumors around how the Riddles were killed. It’s very ghost story, like something you’d read in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

The Hanged Man tarot card does not have anything to do with death, and most depictions show the figure hanging from the ankle. When I read, I usually interpret it as either a change in perspective, a pause, not being able to or not the right time to act, yet. Possibly biding your time, which I think still fits really well with the chapter.
I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but in Tartor the inverse of the Major arcana can be a warning The Hanged man would be warning about too much self reflection. The upright of the Hanged Man talks about holding off and reflecting on a decisions.
When Voldy and Wormtail are discussing waiting until after the cup, theyre not talking about attacking Moody, but Crouch Sr. Bertha revealed to them that Jr. Is alive, but to move before the cup is to risk exposure; Sr. Could die, or the imperius curse be discovered or removed due to all the extra security. That would ruin everything for them.
I think this was the first book my family all waited till midnight at the bookstore for. Which then became a tradition. We got the book and the cds each time.
I feel like it makes more sense that Dumbledore bought the riddle house as he knew voldemort was Tom Riddle the whole time, but he would definitely be the type of person to keep paying frank
13:06 the book notes that none of the other habitants saw the strange, young boy. Police must’ve made some inquiry & why the police disregarded Frank’s claim.
I remember when I read this chapter for the first time when the book came out. I thought there had been a misprint because Voldemort had only turned up at the end of all the previous books and this was the front of the book.
So badly I want a series where not dudley but his kids were magical. Like imagine the emotional Rollercoasters and how healing it would be for the whole family
In traditional British villages the local pubs are named after the signs outside the pub and/or vice-versa, because historically most people were illiterate. They didn't go to a pub with the words "The Hanged Man" written on the outside; they went to the pub with an illustration of a hanged man hanging outside.
In the count of chapters that are not from Harry’s point of view, you forgot the first chapter of Half Blood Prince, The other minister. So in total there is : The boy who lived The Riddle house The other minister Spinner’s End The Dark Lord Ascending
In defence of Wormtail and his lack of knowledge of the big plan, Albanian forests aren't exactly well-accessible resorts (even for Muggles), so it seems that it took quite some time for him to reach the place while staying undetected. Ludo Bagman said he expected Bertha to return to the Ministry thinking it's still July, so she must've gone on vacation in mid-July (I seem to remember somebody said at the Quiddich Cup that she'd been missing for a month but don't remember where that was in the book). And when Wormtail met Bertha and overpowered her (whatever that means, ew), it must've been the second half of July. Then they reach Voldemort and either place him in a body and then torture Bertha or first torture Bertha and then create the mini-body, but both actions required time and ingredient-gathering for Wormtail. So I think that when they settle down in Little Hangleton, it had hardly been two weeks since they started their abominable journey, not two months, and they were too busy to discuss long-term plans
The telephone thing made sence to me hes a loner that lives on the outskirts of a small villiage in the middle of nowhere i could easily see him never having one installed especially at the riddle house and franks gardeners house were probably built long before the invention of the telephone.
According to old fashioned social structures, outdoor staff NEVER entered the house unless on business. In the hierarchy, house servants were socially superior to the gardeners.
To be fair, I dont think anyone(except maybe Luna) would just be talking about The Hallows. I'd expect they're a kin to King Arthur's sword. Most people know about, many dont believe it to be real(a magic sword). Sae with The Hallows
1:12:11 I think the line that's tripping you up is when Voldemort says, "One more *obstacle* removed" - he doesn't specifically say "death", and neither does Wormtail: what he actually gets cut off from saying is, "if I *curse--"* - yeah, it's getting pedantic about it, but neither of them actually mention having to kill anyone - well, they don't in my copy of the book, anyway; is it different in yours?
50:33 Fun fact: Snake handlers refer to getting venom from a snake as milking. That is how we get snake venom for the antivenoms. So, Naginis venom is deadly enough to almost kill Arther Weasley in Order of the Phoenix but Voldemort must be able to dilute it into some restorative potion. Sort of like an anti phoenix whos tears naturally heal others in the story..
Well there are venoms that don't kill you when you trink it or ingest it only if it enters the blood stream that's why it is called "venome" it's connected to the word vein. Curare is a very good example for this. A poison is dagnerous if you ingest it but not necessarily if it enters your blood. I think since Nagini is not a real snake but a Maledictus therefore her venom could helü Voldemort maintain his baby-form.
@sawanna508 True, that would be poisons that harm you when invested. I was. I was thinking more along the lines of the venom from voldemorts snake being used to heal only him and faux's tears, natural healing ability
To be fair, if Tom Riddle decided to stay with Merope or at least care for the baby, maybe she wouldn’t have lost the will to live. She could’ve passed down Slytherin’s locket to Tom Jr, and maybe even the ring. He wouldn’t have had to covet those things or overcompensate to demonstrate his belonging in the wizarding world. So I kind of see him turning more into a Lockhart sort of character but just actually competent 😂
I don’t think an episode has cracked me up more. The images of a cow just wandering through the manor are now stuck in my head.😂 And Voldy as a baby cow just chilling in the chair… thinking we might need some cow merch after this chapter
Calling him Wormtail feels very calculated. Like Voldemort by calling him that is saying "look I am your friend, same as those other guys. I know your secrets." while also reminding him constantly of his udder betrayal of the only people who truly cared for him so Peter is alone in the world without Voldemort.
I know it’s a small detail, but when the villagers talk about how Frank “had a hard war” or that “the war turned him funny”, that sounds as if they’re talking about WW2 in the past tense, despite the fact that it hadn’t ended yet at that point. Is that a result of JK Rowling’s self-confessed ineptitude at maths, or would people have actually phrased it like that in those days, rather than saying something like “he had a hard time fighting” or “the war has turned him funny”?
I was born in 1993, and I remember they were putting the telephone cables in the ground in my hometown when I was like 5. However it was a small town and everything came a bit later in Czech republic 😂😂😂
They’re clearly talking about Crouch Jr. They have the plan set for him to masquerade as Moody and then after they get Harry, Crouch Jr will return to the group of Death Eaters.

Just wanted to say: snakes do in fact have ears. They don't have the external ears like we do that capture and direct sound, but they have all the inner ear mechanisms and ear holes on the sides of their head! They can hear sounds including speech.
Can confirm. My ball python gets antsy when we watch TV. I don't think he understands any of the words but he responds to the amount of sound and vibration.
@jakkaljakobie8774 aww ball pythons are the cutest! I used to have one and he also responded to sounds like the TV or music.
"Interpreting the vibrations in the air" is literally what hearing is.
The 4th book BEGINS! LET'S GO ❤❤❤❤
Dang they're almost going through this too quickly I'm not ready for it to end
@@colinayers3498keep in mind that with the length of the remaining books they’re only like a fourth or at most a third of the way done lol
@RedHeart-gt9xr yeah true that's a good point
- but calmly
@@RedHeart-gt9xrI did the math and they won't finish book 4 until like August 2025 at the earliest. There are 37 chapters.
Could the undisturbed dust not be explained by apparition? It would also explain how the door was still locked, yet Wormtail and Voldie got inside the house. Like, Wormtail is probably capable of apparating right?
I just figured they came out of the fireplace
It would explain them, but what about Nagini, if she is exploring the house surely she left a trail?
@@Ze-Zephyr Maybe the house is big enough for several staircases and therefor Frank did not come across the path she took accept directly infront of the door were Voldemort and Wormtail are. Also sometimes the layer of dust is so thick only the top layer would shift but not cake of completely.
A fun fact for Goblet of Fire, in the German Audiobook, Rita Skeeter has a American accent. I thought it was the funniest thing.
@@Blixthand oh that's interesting. It seems like such an odd thing to change though.
How fitting to announce Through the Griffin Door mugs when you start Goblet of Fire.
This is my favorite chapter in the series. It's so unique and eerie.
Same
Same! I remember reading it with my dad in English (before we had a book translated to our language) ❤
10 hour drive to Texas and this just came out? Thanks for saving me boys.
The Supercuts are the only way for me to make grueling 3+ hour drives
No way dude, I am on a drive to Texas too and am listening to this rn. It’s more like 18 hours for me because I live in Minnesota. I’m also watching all of what if Harry was in Slytherin again.
I saved them up for our trip to Florida a few months ago
“Im full on my bottle for now” 47:38 made me laugh out loud 😂
You've forgotten about "The Other Minister" as a non-Harry centric chapter
Heyy brother!! You guys have helped me through a deep depression and I love every chapter y'all go through it's amazing and something I look forward to every Sunday thank you!
I've been waiting all morning for this I'm so excited!!!!😄😄 Love the word choice of RIDDLES!
Too bad they already used "mysteries." Would have been perfect for book 5.
"riddles" also would've been amazing for HBP
My favourite book! This opening is such a tonal shift in the series, definitely the most interesting to deep dive into out of the chapters so far imo
Then why would the house have different owners in the first years after the murder?
@@arthurdoktor Maybe thats just façade for the muggles.
Dumbledore would absolutely do that, and Frank's death would be more likely to reach his ears.
@@arthurdoktor Perhaps there was an honest attempt to let things move on, but once it was clear that people weren't staying (or it was cursed) and they acted to make sure the innocent man wasn't made destitute
I was so excited to see what color the thumbnails were gonna be for this book and I was not expecting Teal!
AND ITS ON THE BEST BOOK!
Same! 🥰
@@medaman15able I was expecting yellow since the first three were red, green, and blue 😂 but the teal is very pretty!
I pretty much thought that was a given
I was on the local news while waiting for this book to release at midnight. I made friends and pal'd around with the reporter's son, who was around my age.
He didn't have a book preordered, but by lucky accident Borders had books saved under both my and my mother's names, so we let them purchase one of them.
The big to-do about this book's release was the first time I'd heard of Harry Potter.
@@Stark-Raving aww that's so sweet. I also got featured on the local news during this book's release!
This is definitely one of the most unique chapters of in my one of the best Harry potter books.
How many chapters have extended periods that aren’t from Harry’s POV? The first chapter in Sorcerers Stone, this chapter, and when Belatrix and Narcissa visit Snape?
@@Colinkrauss1these are the only ones I can think of too
@@Colinkrauss1 first chapter of book 6 from the new prime ministers perspective
@@Chris-ks4sw good call. And the beginning of book 7. When snape tell voldy about the potter plan
I don't think they're denying that he looked unnatural, just that he would have looked serpentine pre-Nagini.
44:40 not unless they aparated directly into the room
I can see voldemort getting some sick pleasure in the first war out of calling peter wormtail. Like a power play of "oh, your friends called you this? How amusing i think i shall take that and pervert it" and just keeping in the habit.
I agree that it is pointed humiliation. Calling wormtail by his marauder name is constantly reminding him of his only friends, whom he betrayed. I'm sure voldemort is disgusted by wormtail both as a weakling coward, and as a betrayer.
One more 'murder' is a misprint-in UK versions it's 'curse'-Voldy's talking about the plan to get Barty Crouch Sr. under the Imperius Curse!
Does anyone else want merch with a cow instead of Voldemort facing Frank, or a cow wandering around the house in the dark? This episode was so funny and as usual a fantastic deep dive! Thank you to the whole team!
Talk about mooving some merchandise.
Servant's stairs from the kitchen: how Frank used different stairs than Voldy and Company.
Or apparition! Directly into the room!
SCB *always* has the best sets, love the vibes of the TTGD set so much, including Ben's silent auction painting 😂
This is one of my favorite chapters from the entire series. Maybe my favorite overall. It's the part where the story sincerely turned dark to me
The "One Death" mentioned is not a specific person, but merely the death required for Voldemort to make Nagini a Horcrux.
I am really excited for Chapter 4! The Weasley's getting stuck in the Dursley's fireplace is my favorite scene in the whole series
I always liked the description of the Riddle house and the rumors around how the Riddles were killed. It’s very ghost story, like something you’d read in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark
Wow starting GOF already?!?!? You guys work so damn hard and we don’t nearly appreciate it enough. We do appreciate it but man you guys truely deserve millions and millions of views I wish more people could know about you guys and this podcast
24:33 dinner in old parlance used to mean lunch or the midday meal. They would call the nighttime meal supper.
Frank living in the house would probably not help quell the suspicion of him killing the riddles lol
I remember when I read this chapter for the first time when the book came out. I thought there had been a misprint because Voldemort had only turned up at the end of all the previous books and this was the front of the book.
I can’t express how happy I am knowing that we’re just at the start of book 4! I fucking love this podcast
So badly I want a series where not dudley but his kids were magical. Like imagine the emotional Rollercoasters and how healing it would be for the whole family

Keeping the gardener there will keep other people away from going through the house in general.
Abandoned houses tend to get trashed or stuff stolen
In traditional British villages the local pubs are named after the signs outside the pub and/or vice-versa, because historically most people were illiterate. They didn't go to a pub with the words "The Hanged Man" written on the outside; they went to the pub with an illustration of a hanged man hanging outside.
In the count of chapters that are not from Harry’s point of view, you forgot the first chapter of Half Blood Prince, The other minister. So in total there is :
The boy who lived
The Riddle house
The other minister
Spinner’s End
The Dark Lord Ascending
Can't wait until the Weasley show up at Privet Drive !
Love the colour scheme picked out for The Goblet of Fire. For some reason it reminds me of the video game based on it, which I grew up playing a lot.
I think "dinner" in older contexts or European culture used to refer to their mid-day meal. Not 100% sure, but maybe worth looking into
You guys need a horcruxes mug and name it Voldemug!
I'm so stoked for this! GoF is my favorite book in the series!
Oh yea here we go! This is the one I've been most excited to see covered!
42:15 the boys may have access the house by pulling the boards off the boarded windows
I like to think that Frank’s deafness is why he thinks he’s being sneaky, but Voldemort and Wormtail are just in a noisy or insulated room.
Aaaand now we need a nagini cow fusion art... lol
Interesting. There goes my theory
The real question about the golden trio's travel in the Deathly Hallows is why doesn't Harry ever call Kreacher to create them some food?
There was a line I think, where they decided not to summon kreacher, because of the risk someone could come along with the apparition.
FINALLY MY FAVORITE BOOK.
My head canon is that Voldemort heard “Wormtail” and thought of snakes so he was like “Right on, man!”😄
To be fair, if Tom Riddle decided to stay with Merope or at least care for the baby, maybe she wouldn’t have lost the will to live.
I Bet in that universe he probably does become DADA teacher. I think kids either love him or hate him, no in-between.
New merch?
I thought it will be a keychain. You know? THROUGH THE griffin DOOR.
You get it? :D
I don’t think an episode has cracked me up more. The images of a cow just wandering through the manor are now stuck in my head.😂 And Voldy as a baby cow just chilling in the chair… thinking we might need some cow merch after this chapter
I can't express how excited I was to see this first chapter of GofF! I am so ready!
My favourite book!!!! I was totally expecting to have to wait another week for this, after the video yesterday. So excited!!!!
I have always imagined Lord Voldemort's voice to be Weird Al's speaking voice.
They’re clearly talking about Crouch Jr. They have the plan set for him to masquerade as Moody and then after they get Harry, Crouch Jr will return to the group of Death Eaters.
I'm so deeply hyped for this!!!
Nagini the nanny goat 😂
I think the reason used Wormtail instead of Peter was because if he was to say he was Peter it would make Sirius Black get out of prison free card.
Can't believe we are already on to book 4.
Here we freaking go. Best book
Absolutely love this channel! Been following you guys as long as I can remember, and I am ecstatic by how much more material this deep dive has given you guys. I have a question. What would happen if a werewolf managed to become an animagus. I can see it being possible with the discovery of the wolfsbane position. Would they just gain control of their transformation. If so how would the story change if Lupin managed to become an animagus.
Awww for some reason I expected a golden background for this, don't know why!
So excited for this journey!!!
@@slimtree9964 I also expected yellow/gold, I was thinking this would be Hufflepuff colors since we've already done red for Gryffindor, green for Slytherin, and blue for Ravenclaw lol
1:12:00 I think it's Frank. I don't think Voldy is surprised by him, nor that Nagini needs to be in the room to talk to him. I think Nagini knows that Frank is in the house, has communicated this to Voldy, and Voldy is just doing what he does: monologuing. He doesn't care if Frank hears, he's gonna kill him anyway.
Either that or it's Barty Crouch Sr.
Wormtail! Bring my baba. The Dark Lord is hungy. 😂😂😂
My favorite book and movie next to Azkabin. Cant wait for more!
So excited that Goblet has finally begun. Which is in my top 3 for the HP books. I also just received the new mug in the mail today! It’s nicely weighted and feels good to hold. It also retains heat very well. I love it!
It was customary for the outdoor staff to stay outdoors, in their own cottages...and Frank is definitely not one to change with the times.
So good! I look forward to this every week!
