Wait have we considered that Harry is affected by dementors more than everyone else because the piece of Voldemorts soul inside him has to also re-live the most traumatic day of it’s life? Lilys voice in Harrys mind could be a lot clearer because Voldemort, as a much more sentient being than Harry at the time, also heard those screams right before his worst fear was realized

It is like Lupin says, Harry has so much more than everyone else. He witnessed his parents be murdered, after spending time in hiding. Then he is taking to an abusive household, where he is tortured for 10 years, after spending who knows how long in his wreaked bedroom with his mother’s corpse. Before Hogwarts the closest thing he has to a friend is Mrs Figg and her cats. He doesn’t even remember being hugged! Neville never saw his parents torture, but he lived with the torture of seeing what was done to them most of his life, but he had remaining family who loved him. Ginny also had problems with the dementors after her first year, but she had a loving family to help her through it. Luna also had her dad and still had memories of her mother.

Harry really just wants to protect himself, and I couls see a martial arts instructor, maybe with a young teen that has an abusive parent or something, hesitating, but ultimately giving in to the child's determination to master extremely challenging and complex moves as they strive to be able to protect themself against a very real threat.

Crazy fan theory: Hagrid rescues the cat and Harry at the same time and ends up taking the cat to a friend who advises him to take him to Mrs Figg. While traveling he stops at a pub for a pint first and others find out the story about Harry’s survival and Lily and James’ fate. At the same time everyone learns Harry looks like James and has the scar (why everyone recognizes him immediately his whole life). Mrs Figg eventually takes the Potter’s cat to the magical menagerie when it’s getting time to send Harry to school, assuming since Harry has seen pics his whole life he will get his cat back, but Hagrid gets him an owl instead. Magical menagerie lady doesn’t allow his cat out for sale until Harry finally enters the shop with Ron and Hermoine and Crookshanks recognizes Peter and immediately takes action. Supporting the Crookshanks is the Potter’s cat theory.

My addition/modification is that Crookshanks is the offspring of the Potter's cat.
Mrs Figg breeds half-kneazles and it's entirely possible that the parent cat "told" their kid about Sirius and Peter.
And Crookhanks got to the pet store 2-3 years before Harry and co (that can be a long time for a pet not to be adopted hence the "ages" comment.)

I kinda think Hagrid was just instantly charmed by baby Harry. He was just so in love he holed himself up somewhere in secret to cuddle and play with the baby. Felt like he needed it after such a fright. Possibly even purchased the blanket that Harry is wrapped in because the house was blown apart I imagine nothing was worth salvaging. I love the idea of him purchasing this cozy warm blanket that magically shuts out any cold. Harry’s last bit of magic for almost ten years.

You've mentioned several times how Sirius is using the Honneydukes passage, but that's never how I read it. I've always assumed he was using the Shrieking Shack - Whomping Willow passage every time he is coming to the castle because that's the one that isn't guarded. He can press the knot in the tree from the inside and gets help from Crookshanks to get back in, if he doesn't just use a stick or something.

I agree, on the condition that Sirius also knows of a way to get from the Whomping Willow to the inside of the castle without using the regular doors. Because that's the main drawback of the Shrieking Shack passage; it only gets him onto the grounds.

    • @Blixthand
      @Blixthand หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@christinabrock2893 Somehow I find it more likely that Sirius knows a way into the castle from the grounds than that he on at least 2 different occasions managed to break into (and presumably out of) Honeydukes without anyone noticing. He would know not only the passages that leads to places outside the grounds, but also in and out of the castle. And Harry does see Crookshanks and Sirius together on at least one, maybe two occasions, in the grounds, and I don't think Hermione would just let Crookshanks loose in the grounds like that, so there must be some door or passage open in and out of the castle, and Sirius being in the grounds either means he used the Willow passage those times, or we're upping the number of times he broke into Honneydukes to 3-4 and also admitting he has a way in and out in order to get out to the grounds and back into the witch statue.

I disagree. It's always described as just a normal piece of old parchment. Having a bunch of connecting papers and folds would make it very recognizable and unique. One of the benefits of the map is that you can wipe it clean to conceal its contents and make it blend in with their normal school work.

    • @The_Early_Gamer
      @The_Early_Gamer หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@phillipmonson1003 I'm not saying that the movie version is accurate, I know the book version is just a piece of parchment. But they critisized the movie map for being crazy with all the flaps, I'm just saying that a normal square piece of parchment would have to be HUGE to cover every single floor of hogwarts with all it's staircases and secret passages to boot. OR the print would have to be tiny and illegible to fit on a parchment meant for writing.
A useful map for a castle interior would have to be the size of a small blanket if it's a single sheet. So I think an unfolding system makes sense.

I always thought that the twins gave the map to Harry because he’s a rule breaker like them and the marauders. Harry is always mixed up in chaotic happenings (troll, philosophers stone, flying the car to school, chamber of secrets) so he’d use the map for mischief as it was intended. So I agree, they’d give it to Harry whether he had permission or not, he’s the natural successor.

On the "Fred and George never bring up Peter Pettigrew" thing, I think it's much simpler than your theory about the Marauders. The duo tell Harry they don't need the map because they've memorized all the secrets, and you yourselves said that implies they don't use it to look for people. And even if they did, they'd be on the lookout for Filch or teachers, or something, not checking the Griffindor dormitories to see who's sleeping.

My thought about others not collapsing at the quidditch match is that the dementors came in from above and Harry was higher up than most of the people. So there were enough dementors to make others collapse, but they were driven off quickly while most of them were still fairly distant, but Harry got a much more direct encounter with them. I guess Cedric must be fairly resistant to the dementors, but that does seem reasonable from what we know of him.

    • @sawanna508

In the book the Dementors don't fly around they just hover above the ground. So the audience is actually closer to the Dementors then the Quidditch players. The reason why no one else fainted could be that the audience had still so many posstive emotions in them from the game they also were among their friends so that could be the reason why they were not effected that much. Also we should not forget that the book is written from Harry's POV and at the moment the Dementors appear Harry has no time to pay much attention to his suroundings. We also know the vision is bad because of the rain. Since Malfoy is making fun of Harry for collapsing I wouldn't tell anyone if I passed out. So it could be some one else fainted and we just don't know.

1:36:30 I don't think that the Potters were under the Fidelius charm for a year. If they were, Lily wouldn't be writing to Sirius, she'd just talk to him the next time he visited. This suggests that the Potters were under some sort of protection that makes visiting a bit inconvenient. Not so inconvenient that Batilda Bagshod couldn't spend days with them, but enough that you don't just visit your isolated friends after work to chat for a few minutes. Lily's letter mentioning that James was under stress from not being able to leave the house may have prompted Sirius to talk to Dumbledore about the Invisibility Cloak, and have the latter suggest using the Fidelius Charm instead. The way the charm is described in this chapter, the secret seems to have been that "the Potters are hiding in Godric's Hollow" and not "the Potters' house can be found at 123 Fourth Street, Godric's Hollow." That secret would let them safely leave the house if they stayed in their town.
I think it is plausible that Dumbledore hired James to teach Defence Against the Dark Arts for the 1980-81 school year. Dumbledore would have needed the position filled anyway, and James couldn't have done much else for the Order under the circumstances. Having the Potters live at Hogwarts would also make it clear to Snape that Dumbledore was protecting Lily, encouraging him to keep spying for the Order. Then James quits when he finds out that Dumbledore hired Snape to teach Potions the next year. That would explain why the Potters weren't considering using the Fidelius Charm until summer or fall of 1981. And Dumbledore hiring Snape might have made James doubt his judgement right around that time, contributing to the decision to choose Sirius/Peter as Secret Keeper instead.

When Harry reads Lily's letter in DH she says to Sirius that she understands that he couldn't come to Harry's birthday as he was doing something for the order, which should come first and in any case Harry wasn't old enough to understand that it was his birthday. So it wasn't because of the fidelius charm being in place.

Yes, yes, I know she still has the Trace on her, but if they'd been able to figure out a way to remove it, or the quest happened one year later, then she'd have gone. Let's face it, they wouldn't have been able to stop her from coming.
We kinda know this from the fact that she wouldn't let her parents/the Order send her home before the Battle of Hogwarts, and when Harry needs the RoR, she just runs out of there, into the battle, already casting a spell as she literally runs off the page.
Just an idea, because I personally LOVE Book Ginny, and I feel that Bonnie Wright would've done Book Ginny justice if Film Ginny was written well, and was the bad-ass she was supposed to be. Because the VERY VERY TINY amount of Book "Accurate" Ginny, Bonnie did fantastically with, right from the line in Flourish and Blott's, warning Malfoy to leave Harry alone.

My reading comprehension wasn't the greatest when Harry Potter was coming out so I've only seen the movies and have only just started reading the books so I was just wondering does it explain how the trace works in detail in the books for example do you know where the witch/wizard is constantly or do you only know where they are when they use magic if it's the second one then that would be a great way for your what if storyline to work:
Ginny convinces the trio to let her go Hermione only allows it IF Ginny learns muggle self defense tactics to use instead of magic so while Hermione works on a spell to stop their magic being traced due to being near Ginny she learns martial arts until at one moment on their journey Ginny has no other option but to use her magic which then allows them to get captured the some point after that she then uses muggle techniques to defeat one/more of the death eaters which will show that just because it's muggle doesn't mean it can't help the wizarding world

It’s definitely a plot hole but I’ve headcanoned for years that Sirius WAS secret keeper for most of the time, and at the last second got nervous and convinced them to actively change the spell to switch secret keepers. So yeah, I basically think the charm requires a caster and a keeper, they can’t be the same person, and becoming keeper is life-threatening (if it’s not cast right) and painful which is why ppl don’t use this charm very often, so Dumbledore was the caster and Sirius was the keeper but then when they switched, Sirius was caster and Peter was keeper. That way, before the switch Sirius could’ve told Dumbledore, Bathilda, and Peter the secret so they could visit, and after only Peter and Sirius could but no one else would’ve tried bc it all happened so quickly.
IMO the reason Sirius was even worried is bc the charm would only count something as coercion in the short term (basically if you’re able to calm down, the low level stress of war/ppl you love being in danger wouldn’t count) so if he was forced to choose between protecting the Potter’s or someone else he loved (in this case I’m assuming Remus for Wolfstar reasons, and also bc damn near everyone else he cares about is dead or part of the Fidelius charm shenanigans at this point) and was given an extended period of time to sit with that knowledge and choose, the charm wouldn’t prevent it bc it would consider that an informed decision. Basically the same thing for Peter isn’t it? If he only told bc he knew Voldemort would kill him if he didn’t, then the spell clearly doesn’t consider that kind of stress coercion. Unless Peter had said no and Voldemort directly threatened his life it’s just him choosing his own life over theirs. Or I mean, you could assume that Peter just wanted them dead but given the fact that Lily says he seems sad about all the deaths happening in her letter, I doubt that.

Hey Brother.~ So, the whole Hagrid missing for a day thing. I always figured Dumbledore gave Hagrid orders to ride around with Harry for a day or something after rescuing him from the cottage, as a way to make any counter attacks from DeathEaters less likely. I forget which book its mentioned, but Dumbledore I believe admits at some point that he was concerned the DeathEaters would go after Harry once it was confirmed that Voldemort was missing. Thus, Hagrid is ordered to go into hiding for a day while Dumbledore gets things ready for Harry to live at Privite Drive.

A pint is exactly half a quart, aka a quarter gallon, so Hagrid is ordering a half gallon of mead or a little less than 2 liters for our metric fans. Standard wine bottles are .75 liters. In my experience mead is usually between 10 and 15% alcohol (although it can vary pretty widely) which is like a very strong beer, or a little less than most wine so by my rough calculation Hagrid is drinking between 1 and 2 bottles of wine worth of alcohol.

It would also make no sense if only Peter could visit them, because then everyone would know he was the secret keeper and the whole plot of this book revolves around the reveal that Peter was the secret keeper and not Sirius, but if Sirius couldn’t visit them, then that would just have been a well known fact within the Order.

If you're still wondering where "Matinée" comes from in theatre it has a pretty interesting History. It comes from the French word for "morning". But nowadays in theatre it often means afternoon (more generally an early showing of a play or other spectacle). To understand why the weirdness, a couple of things have to be understood. In the early days of theatre, plays were often played in the light of day, it was easier and cheaper than trying to do them by candle light. The other thing to note was that meals in France were originally named "déjeuner" (literally un-fasting, or breakfast), dîner (lunch), souper (supper). Plays tended to be before the dîner in the late morning. However as time went by for some strange cultural reasons meals starting slipping down further into the day until a new meal had to be invented in the morning, the "petit déjeuner" (little un-fasting) became the morning meal, the déjeuner became the noon meal, dîner became the usual name for the last meal of the day. In that time, the time for watching plays remained more associated with the idea of "a show before the dîner meal" than the actual period of the day thus the time for plays also slipped later and later in the day to become the afternoon, but the name stayed as matinée. Now matinée is essentially a show earlier in the day, especially if there's another one later in the evening or even at night, sometimes it's even in the morning.
As an added note the old last meal of the day "souper" is still sometimes used interchangeably with the word "dîner" although it's old fashioned, but in the world of theatre, if you go to a late night show and you (or often the performers) seek out a meal afterwards late at night when it's too late for regular "dîner" that is still called the "souper".

Harry doesn't remember his parents dying when the dementors affect him. His Horcrux remembers dying! In DH, we see the full memory, and it's not Harry's it's Voldy's. No one else has ever died, so they don't pass out.

Maybe the dementors affect Harry more at the quidditch pitch because maybe they decided to go after him and their focused energy was directed at him and lessened for others.

I’m glad that we’re doing this read through, because I think I that some characters, like Draco, have developed a sympathetic fanbase over the years.
It’s true that Draco was influenced by his upbringing, but there a levels of vindictive pleasure that Draco gets out of doing terrible things to people that have nothing to do with blood purity.
Let’s face it, he was a jerk for the entire story.

The problem is that at this point Draco is a one note caricature instead of a fully realized character. Draco becomes fleshed out a bit later on and has at least some realistic depth, but not this early. He is archetypal of bullies, who constantly say the vilest things unendingly

@@sawanna508 that's a good point, and very plausible.... But there's more than a few things that have conditions on being visible. Room of requirement, thestrals, etc. I kinda assumed that it didn't matter if a Marauder opened the map or not, you still had to BE a Marauder or have the blood of one to see another one on the Map.

1:38:20 I heard one of the locals around here say, "Godparents aren't all about birthdays and Christmas presents." Usually a person will think it's ceremonial. However, it started out being an extremely important role in the child's life - a model of how to live a just life and be the parent in the case of both parents having tragedy get them.
