I'm pretty sure I know we're they sent you in 1967. Welcome home. Thank you for your service. I enjoy your videos very much. Thank you for sharing. I hope to see you on the next one
Thank you Gord. This one I set out to do just what I did. Now the other blank is going to take some thinking. And you know us old guys are only allowed to think a little bit everyday or we will get in trouble LOL But I do have to ideas sketched up so it will be coming soon. Hope you are doing well buddy! Take care my friend, Gary
Gosh, Gary! You just keep coming up with projects for me to try sometime in the future. My list was supposed to be getting shorter, not longer! 😵💫🤣🤪 And yes to a shallower version.
Well I would like to say sorry for adding projects to your list but I wont LOL. The things I add to my own list just keeps building. Just crazy ideas I want to try. I knew this one would work but put it off for a long time. I thought it was a pretty good trick in making a segmented bowl Shallow version is been requested and I think I have my final design. I had to change my drawing a few times till I figured out the easy way. Good thing I did it in my CAD program or I would have wore out the eraser on my pencil haha. Gary
Hi Gary... Really beautiful bowl with an amazing finish... I would like to see another bowl.. shallow this time.. perhaps without staggering the pattern... Instructive video as always... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Thank you Andy. I also have thought about not staggering them. Staggering them does make the bowl stronger but I have done these types with only one layer so no stagger on those. But I have an option for making them strong enough. Not like it will be used for a Frisbee LOL.... I THINK! Take care, Gary
Love it!! I think a nice shallow bowl would be very nice.. I wish i could get you a few of the rose wood cedar i've been turning. I think you would really Enjoy turning it..
I love to watch you turn segmented bowls and bowls from a board! This video is the best of both worlds!!! Thank you!!! I’d love to see you make a shallow bowl or plate with your extra blank!!!
It does work. I first I calibrated the table saw blade to exactly 90 degrees. Trued up some scrap. Then added scrape to my table saw miter gauge extending it to 18". Then using an electronic/digital angle finder cut scrap until I got the miter gauge to exactly 67.5 degrees. This produced an 8 piece closed center segmentation....YES it can be done! Thanks Gary!
Papa, Another wonderful creation from your fertile imagination! Very nice indeed. But there is a bit of a problem; I’m dizzy! Some of your segmented works do that to me. Fear not, I’m not driving. And I haven’t been drinking 🫣. I’m sitting in my recliner heaping praise upon an exceptionally talented wood turner. Thank you for a delightful interlude in my otherwise slothful 🦥 day. Keep the aspidistra flying! God bless, Paul
Gary , that is one impressive looking bowl ! Can you believe the heat we have been having ? It sure makes it hard to get in the shop ! You are the master of segments ! Have a great week ahead !
Thank you Patty and I am sure I could sell them but it is hard to do. I get pretty attached to a lot of them. But I really should figure out a way to sell some as I am running out of room and my wife says 20 turnings on the dinning room table is a bit much LOL. Thanks for watching, Gary
Segments from a board, clever! Thanks for sharing the jigs. I usually catch the ring with a gloved hand, but it's not for everyone and the backer is an excellent idea, as is the right angle. Quicker than using a square each time.
Thank you Josh. I am sure catching with a gloved hand is working fine for you. Myself I like to keep both hands on the parting tool as they can grab at any moment. So because of that I would not recommend catching the ring to anyone else. But it seems to work for you. Not trying to be the safety police but some people have a thing about gloves and moving objects. I got called out for wearing and apron at the lathe even though I wore one all my working days as a wood patternmaker.
Gary if I watch enough of your videos I might eventually learn to cut segmented bowls based on your instructions. Has nothing to do with your instructions but my comprehension. I just live to sit back and watch a master do his thing. Very relaxing and pretty soon the video is over and I hadn’t learned anything-just enjoyed the video. I’ve got to start paying attention!!! Thanks buddy.
I think that is the best one yet. I like the dish Idea. I make 10 inch bowls and always stop at 3 rings. Makes a great serving dish. Now, down to the shop to give it a try.
Yes they seem to land on the floor a lot, One of these days I need to take some time off to get things picked up. With the motiving around of the mill I sold and getting a new washer and dryer it got out of control. The good news is I found 6 on my desk what I brought in from the shop LOL. Happy you enjoy watching my videos Kevin! Take care, Gary
Thank you very much Laura. I am working on it right now. Not going to be as easy as I would like but I will get something for sure. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you for your service Gary. My father was a survivor of the Vietnam war and was my real life hero. Happy turning my friend and thanks for your helpful explanation of everything that you do. 😊
Attempt number 12 ... let's see if this is deleted ..... I love this type of bowl, I think it's because it's a simple but effective method of making a bowl, not only that but it wastes very little wood, especially if you create it in this way ... it's a beautiful piece 😁 Yes, a shallow bowl version of this would be nice to see, showing how the angle you cut the rings at affects the overall shape of the bowl 👍
Thank you Barry. It was fun to do for sure. It would not have takes much more to have individual segmented rows but it would have take a lot more glue up. I think I have a final design for the shallow version. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thanks Chet. I do have a video where I use 3 different angles. th-cam.com/video/0zJlsPsNKxM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=OGlpt2kNWTaEcfsU Using 2 boards matching the grain will be harder to do. At least with a non segmented board Thanks for watching, Gary
Dude, this is fantastic. So cool and beautiful at the same time. Exceptionally well done. I really like this piece. And hopefully you make the dish with the second one.
Happy you found it. It is only dark because they burn it. Most people call it Burnt Oak but where I buy it they label it Cambia Oak. Thanks for watching. Gary
Lovely bowl Gary and I like the method you used to make it along with all the little helpers shown at the end, I have done a similar type of bowl but I used a ringmaster to make it and sanding those bowls is a real chore! Well done and thanks! Cheers Al
Thank you very much Al. I used my metal lathe as a sort of ring master one time. I have also cut the rings in half on the band saw but I find this method works best for me. But I do not have a ringmaster. Thanks for watching, Gary
Very handy jigs. The right angle one could possibly be used for other projects. Great looking bowl, one done as a platter would work, in looks just as well as the bowl.
My first bowl (1975) was a bowl from a board. The rings were cut with a Jig Saw. By your standards the cuts were a mess, but useable. I still have the bowl. It was from a piece of 1 x 12 mahogany. Still looks pretty good. I sure wish I had known of your methods and fixtures back then. It certainly would have been easier. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Thank you Glen. My first one was made on my band saw making half rings. Way to much work gluing the halves together so I decided to try this and it works. But it is so easy and cheap to make most of the things I come up with. I am all about saving money when I can. Take care, Gary
Nice segmented bowl. I like the idea of a shallow dish for the next one, but some very small bowls to go with the set would be nice.. Long johns in southern Louisiana would not be needed. LOL. My dad did training down there in WWII before going to Bragg and had to teach his commanding officer and some other soldiers how to stay dry in the field. He said it really rained. Haha
I did advanced infantry training at Ft. Polk before shipping over to Vietnam. Both of those places were long john free ...and more. Thanks for watching, Gary
I love your videos I’ve learned a lot. Thank you! I have discovered if you line all your pieces up with the glue side up and a shim to keep them level and something to push them against I can just put glue on all of them then grab them one by one and put them together instead of spreading glue one at a time.
Thank Chad I appreciate you watching. Lots of ways to glue the pieces together. The best way is what works for you. They all seem to about the same amount of time. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thank you Don. I have started the design for a shallow bowl. In order to keep it shallow it would have to be just one cut. Each cut will add 3/4 of an inch. But I may consider cutting the thickness down. Hmm you just got me thinking. Thanks this just might be the answer. Gary
A stunning work of art sir, very nice indeed. Thanks for all your hard work, on both sides of the camera. Also thanks for sharing it with us. Outstanding.🌿 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you very much Rob. Happy you enjoyed it and understand how much work it takes after the video is shot. Thanks for watching and hope to hear more from you in my future videos. Gary
G'day Gary. What a top vid and awesome presentation. You make it look so easy and your imagination is outstanding. Keep up the incredible work. Thanks, Dave, Beachmere Brisbane Australia.
The whole video is awesome. If you make a shallow plate or platter the design will be much less interesting but I am certain anything you do will be impressive!!
Thank you Barry. Yes that is my concern that it will look like a flattened out version of this one. But maybe I can do something with it. Thanks for watching, Gary
Great execution Gary. I, too, have been using polyurethane to seal the wood before polishing. I use regular poly from a can, put on with a cloth, it builds faster than the wipe-on. I then polish with a buffing system, ending with carnauba wax.
Thank you Bill, I have used the regular poly but I find the wipe on to be easier to get a very smooth finish. It does take more coats but in this weather it happens pretty fast. I do not have a buffing system and I am sure that would help if you were using the regular poly. Thanks for watching, Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I really enjoy watching you work. I’m a new turner. And if I could spend a week in a shop learning, I’d definitely pick you to be a mentor .
You've got this down to a science, Professor! I can tell just watching that it's become second nature to you. I'm sure explaining it to your audience slows the process down quite a bit. This was a joy to watch, my friend! You make it look easy-peasy! As for the bowl, it's gorgeous as always! The segments are perfect, the turning looks great and the finish is superb! Great job, buddy, keep'em coming! 😊 Phil

Nice job. I would like you to make a shallow dish using multiple angles.
Thank you Don. I have started the design for a shallow bowl. In order to keep it shallow it would have to be just one cut. Each cut will add 3/4 of an inch. But I may consider cutting the thickness down. Hmm you just got me thinking.
Thanks this just might be the answer.
Gary
Nice segmented bowl. I think a platter and bowl combination would look really great.
Thanks so much and a platter/plate will be coming.
Gary
Shallow dish would be good to see how you cut that .
Thanks and I have done it> th-cam.com/video/bGcRLGWMn5c/w-d-xo.html
I would li ke to see a planter,Goodyear job
Thank you Pierre! Well then here is is! th-cam.com/video/bGcRLGWMn5c/w-d-xo.html

G'day Gary. What a top vid and awesome presentation. You make it look so easy and your imagination is outstanding. Keep up the incredible work. Thanks, Dave, Beachmere Brisbane Australia.
Thanks so much Dave for your very kind words.
Take care,
Gary
Looks great
Thank you Chris. Much appreciated.
Gary
Would like to see a shallow bowl for comparison of details of cutting the rings.
Well Bob I put it on the list. It will be tricky to cut the rings though. But I will give it a go.
Gary
The whole video is awesome. If you make a shallow plate or platter the design will be much less interesting but I am certain anything you do will be impressive!!
Thank you Barry. Yes that is my concern that it will look like a flattened out version of this one. But maybe I can do something with it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Another amazing project!
Thanks so much Dianne! Happy you like it.
Take care,
Gary
Go for the shallow style. I'd like to see them stacked at the end.
Thank you David! That is the plan.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
As usual, beautiful work and well explained. I miss wood turning. I haven't done it for a very long time. Thank you for the memories.
Thank you Keith. It is something I really love so I understand how you miss it.
Gary
Absolutely amazing. Really like the pattern. Great job Gary 👍.
Thank you Scott, I appreciate your comments and thanks for watching,
Gary
Great execution Gary. I, too, have been using polyurethane to seal the wood before polishing. I use regular poly from a can, put on with a cloth, it builds faster than the wipe-on. I then polish with a buffing system, ending with carnauba wax.
Thank you Bill, I have used the regular poly but I find the wipe on to be easier to get a very smooth finish. It does take more coats but in this weather it happens pretty fast.
I do not have a buffing system and I am sure that would help if you were using the regular poly.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Really nice one, Gary!
Thank you Billy I appreciate you watching and commenting.

Phil
Thank you very much Phil. I guess you could say segments are in my blood. More like stuck in my head though LOL.
I do like making these but what I finished today blows the socks off this one if I ask myself.
All nature in this one. I am still on cloud nine after seeing the beauty we have been given.
Well that is all I can say for now...you will have to watch next week LOL
Take care my friend,
Gary

I did that not lomg after this one.
Thank you very much and sorry for the late reply. Had an ankle injury.
Gary
Very nice, Gary. I live the jigs--real time svers. I'd like to see a shallow bowl/platter.
Thank you Tom. Shallow something it will be!
Take care,
Gary
Very beautiful Gary. I think a plate or platter would be great.
Thank you Jack and I think I have the final design for the plate. Coming soon.
Take care,
Gary
