Your mind is as sharp as your gouge, Professor! I understood completely your explanation on how to make larger bowls from the small bowl fixture. It seems by the number of views this video already has, you are a master at this sort of thing and everyone knows it! Another instructional video that will outlast us all and will be appreciated by craftsman for generations to come. Very well done, Gary! I stand in awe of you, my friend! 😃 Oh, yeah, and the 11" bowl is a beauty! Wow, hang it on the wall and you won't need a mirror! Phil
Thanks so much Phil! I try not to look in the mirror as some old guy seems to have his picture pasted to it. A bit scary LOL I am very pleased with the views but please do not tell anyone I have already started working out the dimensions for the jig. It will start at 15" but keep that to your self ..shoot anybody can read this LOL. Not sure how the glue up will go. Might need something special to make that happen. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary

Thank you Terry. Yeah they used to give me some real complex patterns to build. There was one the customer was thinking they would need 6 core boxes to make it. I looked at the drawing and told the owner of our shop I could do it with one core. So he said spend a day and build a little mock up of it. Customer came in and I had to tell him my plan. Went to lunch with them that day. Saved them thousands on making the castings. Thousands on each casting they made. That is a good memory for me. High Gary I am making a 14 inch dia spiral platter I made a precise aluminum pattern on my Bridgeport with a rotary table , I clamp the wood to the aluminum pattern and use a flush cut router bit to finish after rough cutting on my bandsaw, they glued up perfectly. 7:45
I have made a few segments on my Bridgeport Boss 4. That is what got me thinking about this one. Not that many people have CNC mills so they could make something like this. Thanks for watching, Gary
...yep...loved the bowl and the technical info... What I love about these turnings is when the glue lines are turned away and the wood segments appear to become one solid piece... Amazing work Gary...thanks...👍 Matt
Thanks so much Gord. Happy you liked it. I just figured it was time to show a bigger one on this jig. Sure glad it worked because that was a first time for that size for me as well LOL. Take care, Gary
I have just finished this sledge today, and turned my first segments. I can also see this video has reached its target views, so yes please, inspire us with another of your clever builds.
Thank you Nic and good to hear it all worked out for you. Yes it did reach the goal and I plan on doing it in the near future. I will need to fit it in with the next few turnings I do as time lets me. But it is very promising as I did a rough test modifying one of my sleds. I just need to work out how I show the information. I will get to it so bare with me a little because I am looking forward to doing it. Gary
Well, there is more than one way to skin a cat with your existing jig. I was thinking about making a larger jig to make larger bowls. But this video shows me a way to use my existing jig to make a larger bowl. Consequently, you saved me a lot of work making a new jig. Will head down to the shop and see how it works for me. 👍👍👍👍👍
All I can say the math part and bandsaw jig is mind boggling 😂 how you figure out how to make a larger segment just from scraps.😂😂 Absolute beautiful Only made one segment bowl, bottom broke off before finishing the inside 🤦🏼♀️ Thank you for sharing.
Great job Gary, I see you’re over 100K views so are we going to see a jig to make the bigger bowls with less scrap soon 😀 (please ) 😀? I really like your segmented turnings and the custom jig makes these special. Thank you for sharing! I just did my first segmented bowl in 5 years now anxious to do more, as I am really rusty and need practice.
Thank you Ian. I did make a bigger jig that made an 18 inch Lazy Susan with this same pattern. It was pretty had to glue up but it worked. Not totally happy with the jig and might make some changes before doing a video on building it. th-cam.com/video/HyqhngcWQ1g/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=ThePapa1947 Gary

Thank you very much Dave and I could not agree more about how some things are taught. I did very good in math in grade school so much they moved me into a special math class with the next grade up. In high school that slapped me into algebra and I had no clue what and why. And that was the teacher I had. Never explained a thing. So when I started my pattern making apprenticeship I had to take college classes in trig and geometry. My love of math came back and I loved it. Gary, it’s one of those jigs that one just has to have. You are a wiz at making them. I will have to dig into your videos to find out how you made your jig. Can’t wait
Gary, this is the king of the bowls you have made on this fixture so far. It is so pretty. I have just started working on the first bowl using the fixture you made two years ago. I did make a trial run out of pine to make sure I had made the fixture right. I sure thank you for the help that you give us. It really means a lot to get this help from you. I would like you to make a fixture for a bigger bowl.
Beautiful bowl, Gary. I'm glad I'm not a woodturner because then I won't have to think about making one of those jigs. I start to get a headache just thinking about it when you explain them. Bill

That looks really complicated to make a jig like that but I suppose all you need to do is try and then perfect it! Lovely bowl with a perfect finish!, well done and thanks! Cheers Al
A relatively simple jig for the bandsaw, but what a fantastic result ... the parting tool jig, so simple but effective ... overall a fantastic demonstration of how to create a stunning looking bowl ... awesome👍
I made your your jig the other day, and it turned out great ! I already cut out and glued up a plate out of white oak, and walnut. I used 2" material and the jig work fine, but that's probably the limit for that jig ! Going to let the glue cure for a couple days before I start turning :) Thanks for the video, Greg
Great fun and beautiful bowl of course. I also like the rain shower. We have been able to enjoy a bit of rain here too finally. The fishing may be good next week when I go to the lake. You have me thinking that I might be able to piece together some scraps for something art like at least. I seem to make things that do no do what I planned on, but the scraps end up making something usefull. Weird. Have fun. Thanks for the entertainment.
Thank you Travis. It is sure nice here right now. It is 62 here now and heading to 84. Scraps that size are great to have. As long as I do not get too many of them. Thanks for watching, Gary
Hi Gary Beautiful creation ,and a great hand me down for family to enjoy in coming generations. Funny when in our eighties we have all day to do whatever we like but there never seems to be enough time to do it all in! Love your bowls, and clear explanations on the how to do it. Thanks for sharing Regards from .coromandel NZ

i dont usually comment on youtube videos but i really enjoy, and am inspired by your videos. Starting to turn for the first time in my mid 30's and i'm drawn to all your segmented pieces. I cant wait to try to build one of these bandsaw jigs and also the parting tool jig to cut my own bowls from boards. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge and your beautiful projects.
Thank you very much for the information and the video. I look forwards to making the jig and turning some projects. You are a true craftsman and artist.
Fantastic, beautiful, amazing!! Do you have a video showing how to make the bandsaw fixture to do all the cuts! If you have plans I would be willing to pay for them! Again beautiful I hope I can do just a fraction of you quality! Thanks Gerry
Thank you Gerry, If you watch this video you should be able to get all the information for making the fixture. If not feel free to ask. th-cam.com/video/2M3D5wst_pM/w-d-xo.html Gary
Loved it all Gary! The fact that you had demonstrated the process before the explanation I think made the explanation much more understandable. And what a beautiful bowl! Thank you for that. Cheers, Rick
Hi again Gary I have watched as you said a couple of your board to bowl videos and am on my way to giving one a go. Just looking again at this video though I see that awsome little piece that you 3d printed. I guess the first one was Aluminium? Would you consider marketing these? I reckon you would do well. I would have my name down for one if you did. Keep up he brilliant work mate! Your skill shows through on every job. John in Queensland.
Thank you very much John. Yes the first one I did was out of wood and then I milled one out of aluminum. I decided to 3D print one as well and the file is on TinkerCad for anyone that wants to use it. Selling anything like this would mean you should have liability insurance. I trust what I make but I can not trust how it is used by others Here is a version of the wood one I made which is easy to do which works fine. I did the others because I just love to make things: th-cam.com/video/GnzYR6y4ZhM/w-d-xo.html
Good morning, I have learned a lot from watching your videos. I especially liked your tips on using the sanding sealer and polycrylic. I made a bowl from a board using two spiral boards and arranged them so the bowl has a spiraling checker board pattern. This make an interesting pattern and a much deeper bowl. I am not the type to make videos but it is a fun bowl to make and I wouldn't mind getting it out their for other people to do. If you are interested in more info let me know and I will get it to you. Thanks and have a great day!
Thank you for sharing your techniques on this. I’m going to try this out. Really appreciate all of your videos. So much valuable information in each one. Thanks again Gary 👍.
300th like. It’s not just nice, it is absolutely lovely and, I agree, the first coat of finish brings out the beauty of the wood. You are a very clever man, Gary. And wow! that was one hell of a storm. Look after yourself. 🌞
Excellent video. I tried my first bowl from a board a few months ago and I got it too thin. you can guess what happened. But I always learn from making a mistake. Will try it again soon.
Fantastic Gary. Maybe a lot of people might not be able to do it but I had no doubt you would be able to do it and do it you did. Great video my friend. Take care Gary. Hwyl, Huw
Thanks Huw, it was all about the rotation point for making a larger diameter. I knew I could go this far but that might be the limit on this sled. Seems like it might be time to design another one. Hwyl, Gary
I made a sled last year successfully after going over your description many times. I have made a number of bowls and had a friend make me a tool rest guide as you described and have a parting tool identical to yours. I like the idea of a support behind the board as my last attempt at an eight inch bowl caused the outer ring to break into several pieces. I re-assembled it although I was turning way too fast but surprisingly the cut was quick and didn’t overheat or blunt the tool as much. 😅 I enjoy learning from you but can’t get all the finishes you use in Australia.
Thank you very much. Nice to hear you have made the jig and it is working good for you. I never had one of the boards break but I sure like the support piece I made for keeping it from spinning around after the cut. What kind of finishes can you get. Clear gloss lacquer will do the same thing. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thanks Valerie. I have one of those a round to it list as well. I have crossed a few off though. Afraid to look at it right now though LOL
Gary, you're the man.
Thank you Garth
Another ingenious turning. I’ll be sharing for sure.
Thank you Doug. Happy your liked it.
Take care,
Gary
Wow, that jig and your skills to be able to come up with it are amazing!!!
Thank you very much Kayla. I appreciate your comments.

A relatively simple jig for the bandsaw, but what a fantastic result ... the parting tool jig, so simple but effective ... overall a fantastic demonstration of how to create a stunning looking bowl ... awesome👍
Thank you so much Barry for you comments. Happy you enjoyed this video,
Take care,
Gary
Thanks Gary, I made the sled and my bowl turned out awesome, glad to see how th make a larger bowl. As always your videos are top notch!!!
Thanks Ron. Thanks for letting me know it worked out for you.
Take care,
Gary
Excellent instructions as always. This quality is much appreciated
Thanks so much Randy.
I made your your jig the other day, and it turned out great ! I already cut out and glued up a plate out of white oak, and walnut. I used 2" material and the jig work fine, but that's probably the limit for that jig ! Going to let the glue cure for a couple days before I start turning :)
Thanks for the video,
Greg
Thank you Greg. I would love to see your finished project.
Take care,
Gary
You inspired me to to try this! Thanks
Thank you Mike and have fun.
Gary
Great fun and beautiful bowl of course. I also like the rain shower. We have been able to enjoy a bit of rain here too finally. The fishing may be good next week when I go to the lake. You have me thinking that I might be able to piece together some scraps for something art like at least. I seem to make things that do no do what I planned on, but the scraps end up making something usefull. Weird. Have fun. Thanks for the entertainment.
Thank you Travis. It is sure nice here right now. It is 62 here now and heading to 84.
Scraps that size are great to have. As long as I do not get too many of them.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I am planning a project next week that will help with a bunch of my scraps that are bigger. My wood rack is is a bit over whelmed. LOL
@@travisgreen3533 Been there....Doing That LOL

Thank you very much Billy. I designed a new one today that will be should be very cool.
Another great video! Gotta go back and watch the sled vido and give it a try. You continue to inspire!
Thanks so much Tom. Yes that would be a good place to start. Plenty of people have made this and sent pictures of beautiful turnings.
Have fun,
Gary
Beautiful!
Thank you Leslie!
Hi Gary
Beautiful creation ,and a great hand me down for family to enjoy in coming generations.
Funny when in our eighties we have all day to do whatever we like but there never seems to be enough time to do it all in!
Love your bowls, and clear explanations on the how to do it.
Thanks for sharing
Regards from .coromandel NZ
Thank you very much and I know what you mean about not having enough time . Seems to like I am busier now than when I was working. And I always had things going on when I got home and on the weekend
Thanks for watching,
Gary
i dont usually comment on youtube videos but i really enjoy, and am inspired by your videos. Starting to turn for the first time in my mid 30's and i'm drawn to all your segmented pieces. I cant wait to try to build one of these bandsaw jigs and also the parting tool jig to cut my own bowls from boards. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge and your beautiful projects.
Thank you very much Rick and I appreciate you taking time to comment.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you very much for the information and the video. I look forwards to making the jig and turning some projects. You are a true craftsman and artist.
Thank you Edward that is very kind of you to say.

Great video Gary. I would love a build/use video of the new jig that you spoke of.
Thank you Jack. It sure looks like I will be building one and soon.

You are a true master of your craft, loved the finish on the bowl,
Thank you very much Jim. I just love what I do. Happy you like it as well.

Fantastic, beautiful, amazing!! Do you have a video showing how to make the bandsaw fixture to do all the cuts! If you have plans I would be willing to pay for them! Again beautiful I hope I can do just a fraction of you quality! Thanks Gerry
Thank you Gerry,
If you watch this video you should be able to get all the information for making the fixture. If not feel free to ask.

Appreciate the technical information ... Thanks!
Thank you Gerald. Hope it takes some of the mystery away from these types of turnings.
Take care
Gary
Hi again Gary
I have watched as you said a couple of your board to bowl videos and am on my way to giving one a go.
I trust what I make but I can not trust how it is used by others
Here is a version of the wood one I made which is easy to do which works fine. I did the others because I just love to make things:

Thanks so much Joey!
Very cool Gary. Like the way you made this work.
Thank you very much Mark. The next one will be lots of fun for me to make the cutting jig.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Good morning, I have learned a lot from watching your videos. I especially liked your tips on using the sanding sealer and polycrylic. I made a bowl from a board using two spiral boards and arranged them so the bowl has a spiraling checker board pattern. This make an interesting pattern and a much deeper bowl. I am not the type to make videos but it is a fun bowl to make and I wouldn't mind getting it out their for other people to do. If you are interested in more info let me know and I will get it to you. Thanks and have a great day!
Hi Randy. Sure I would love to see what you made. You can find my email in my About Page.

Always fun and educational
Thank you Dave!
Thank you for sharing your techniques on this. I’m going to try this out. Really appreciate all of your videos. So much valuable information in each one. Thanks again Gary 👍.
Thank you very much Scott and best of luck.

Thank you very much!

300th like. It’s not just nice, it is absolutely lovely and, I agree, the first coat of finish brings out the beauty of the wood. You are a very clever man, Gary. And wow! that was one hell of a storm. Look after yourself. 🌞
Thank you Ray...oh yeah I forgot I added that storm. Wow it was rocking and the cats were hiding. Along with me LOL
Take care,
Gary
Excellent video. I tried my first bowl from a board a few months ago and I got it too thin. you can guess what happened. But I always learn from making a mistake. Will try it again soon.
Thank you and for sure we learn from doing. I am sure you next one will be great.
Gary
That's a lovely piece of art very interesting. You have honed your talent
Thank you Pat I appreciate your comments and thanks for watching,

Fantastic Gary.
Maybe a lot of people might not be able to do it but I had no doubt you would be able to do it and do it you did.
Great video my friend.
Take care Gary.
Hwyl, Huw
Thanks Huw, it was all about the rotation point for making a larger diameter. I knew I could go this far but that might be the limit on this sled. Seems like it might be time to design another one.
Hwyl,
Gary
It's a very beautiful bowl. I love it.❤
Thanks so much Mary I appreciate you watching and commenting,

Good video and information.
Thank you very much Brad and thanks for watching,

Thanks for watching,
Gary
