    Gary, I'm the guy that some months ago asked what profession you came from wondering if you had been an engineer or mathematician but learned you made wooden patterns. I am a pretty fair woodworker but I don't have an imaginative bone in my body so consequently I have to steal ideas from others like yourself. I had a 1996 12" Delta lathe which served me well but was gasping for life lately and you have inspired me to up my game so I just purchased a huge Harvey 24" lathe and I have a whole Sh#$load of off cuts that I am finding a new life for thanks to you and all your marvelous projects. Our church has a fundraiser in November that includes a silent auction and I'm going to overwhelm them and reduce my off cuts pile. You are amazing in all the geometric designs and solutions to incorporate in wood turning and all I can say this is so much more fun and less stressful than my previous life as a stockbroker. And if the 1947 in your nom de plume is your birth year then we are the same vintage. Thank you so much for all your efforts and I will continue to try and mimic your wonderful projects.

      Well thank you very much Mark for wanting to do what I do and I am very happy that you feel it is worth copying. And as far as copying if there is ever a question I am happy to answer and I have drawings of a lot of things like this that I am more than willing to share.
      Wow a 24" Harvey will be a great lathe for sure. No reason to go in-between as you will be set for anything.
      As a wood pattern maker it had times when it was very stressful. Not only did I have to read a 2d drawiing and produce a wood pattern from it but had to be made so you could mold it in sand and get it out. Plus making a core box to make the inside. All of this while making the bided price they put on the pattern. But I was blessed with the ability's to do this and was given the very complex patterns to build and loved it.
      After retirement I still needed to continue testing myself and am always looking for something to do that. I love learning new things and it seems you do as well.
      I am guessing it is something with those of us born in 1947 LOL.
      Take care,
      Gary

    Gary, Again, your clear explanation of each step guides the viewer through. Of the dozens of videos on turning, your's is pedigocally sound! You are clear with the appropriate terminology, and show just enough to convey the idea! Your design ideas morphed into turnings are very imaginative...and inspirational. Right On, Gary! You're my hero!

    Hi Gary! “I don’t really consider it luck…” ha ha ha 😂 Neither do I! This bowl looks just awesome 👏🏻👍🏻 I truly don‘t know which of your segmented bowls is my favourite, but this one is among the top three for sure, great job, Gary! I can tell that you are in the flow when you are immersed in these segmented bowl projects… Such precision and creativity, it is such a pleasure to watch 😊 I don’t know why but this bowl really gives off a strong African vibe somehow… Not just the warm colours but also the shape… Reminds me of the hat that Meryl Streep wears in „Out of Africa“ when she gets married to Brø von Blixen… One of my favourite movies, you know… Really gorgeous bowl, Gary, thank you 🙏🏻 Have a lovely week, take care 👋🏻

    Gary, do you know that you are inspiring a whole generation? You transformed the old fashioned way of turning into something modern, light, colourful, shining, and interesting! You make the younger generation want to repeat it and try themselves on this very old craft of turning. For sure there are hundreds of your followers who went directly to a shop to get their own lathe. And you guide them/us on this way :-) I found this must have been said. Gary, thanks for sharing!

    Another beauty! One of the reasons I watch your videos is for what I learn, sometimes just a small detail. Today's lesson was the wipe-on poly. After a couple of bleeds, I stuck to the spray-on finish but those fumes are strong and winter has hit and I can't spray outdoors. This is a great solution. I had to chuckle when you mentioned the heater was on in your shop. Before I started to watch this, I turned mine on to knock off the chill before I start. My dream house would have a fully insulated, heated, air conditioned shop with exhaust fans, etc. My real world, like a lot of us, is an unheated garage, though I did add a window AC to it last year.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Josh. I have not tested it for Maple but I will do that when I go out to the shop. Which I need to do to turn a heater on. Normally getting the chill off is enough and I can shut it off when working.
      I used to go steelhead fishing in the winter and above freezing was a warm day in my drift boat. Now I fish for them in the warm months.

    You just continue to impress, Gary! Your design and then attention to detail as you cut and build each ring has my mind spinning. I just don't think like you do, my friend. Probably a good thing considering what goes through my mind most days...
    It's hard to pick a favorite of all of your segmented turnings. Each has it's own personality and look. This one is very attractive. Love the blend of colors and style in this piece. Great job, buddy, keep'em coming! 😊

Trouble is what I am working on I thought could be a 15 minute video but no that aint gonna happen. So next one might have to be the one where my head does not spin.

    Good evening, Gary. Wowzer! Very impressive segmented bowl. Great wood choices and design. I haven't ventured into segments yet, however your video has me thinking. A lot of time yielded a gorgeous piece.

      Thanks Ray, wowzer is one of my favorite words.
      For sure there was a lot of time but most spend on the feature ring. A lot of cuts to finally get a segment. But I enjoy the process and knowing that one step wrong can ruin the whole batch makes me slow down and enjoy each step for what it is. I know I am wacky that way.
      Take care my friend,
      Gary

    Gary, to do turning like this, and others that are similar, which you have done, shows a skill level way beyond any ability I might have. This bowl is another masterpiece.
    The real difficult part is designing and calculating the size shape and quantity of the needed segments. This takes a good bit of skill and knowledge in its own part.

    I wish I had known the pencil line trick the first time I made a segmented piece. I placed most of the pieces correctly but messed up on a couple near the end of the glue-up. Over-confidence got me. That was about 15 years ago, so you might say I learned the hard way.
    This project was fascinating to watch and I still learned a few things along the way. I appreciate the way you take your time planning and turning your projects. Too many TH-camrs seem to be in a big rush to finish. Like you I enjoy the therapeutic feelings of the planning of a project. I can hardly wait for your next video.

    One good takeaway from this video: to leave a section uncut when cutting the angles.
    One remark: The angle finder does not tell you if your table is at zero degrees. If not sure, check that before you start.
    Great video Gary. 😎

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Leo. So the angle finder has a button to zero it to the surface you are working on. The way my saw is sitting it is about 3 degrees from being flat to the world. As far as my angle finder know it is set to a table that is now zero.
      Another good trick is if you want to set the bandsaw table at an angle you put the angle finder on the blade and zero it. Now the table is adjusted to to the blade.
      Thanks for watching,
      Gary

    • @emgiwoodworks
      @emgiwoodworks 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThePapa1947 Well, I have one of those angle finders too and its a great piece of kit.
      For one thing the battery seems to last forever; it still turns on when I use it which is not very often.
      Maybe mine has that zeroing feature too but I'm not sure. I always check the table first and thus far my table is always close to zero. But it sits on a wooden floor so it might vary over the seasons. Without a reference, the 7.50 degrees could be way off from what you really wanted.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@emgiwoodworks when getting the angle on segments and getting them to close up you have to be more than pretty close. Being off .5 degrees will make each segment off by 1 degree times in this case 12 segments. We had a high dollar digital level a work and it also had a zero button. I would sure hope you angle finder has a zero button.
