Dude, MAME is what gaming is all about IMO. Reliving those arcade days as a kid. The feeling you had when you first walked into an arcade with $5 in your pocket.
I try to relive what I didn't know. The only arcade games I noticed here as cabinets back than early was sega rally and later some daytona. That was it. Very thing knew to me.
There was an arcade at my local mall when I was a kid called, Tilt, that was always packed! Sad to see it dwindle out and then go out of business. Glad we can still emulate these games. Built a bartop just to get the old experience 🙌🏻
I miss the Tilt. Ours had a full size Virtua Cop (so so awesome) and full size Virtual On vs cabinets. The fully moving After Burner and even that crazy Sega holographic game. Good times.
Brute Force! beatemup with a dedicated dive button. 8way action and more guns than most. Fighting through a movie theater, walking through a junkyard and having a punk rocker throw grenades at you standing at the top of a giant mound of dirt!
When I was younger, it was common to go Arcade Game Halls after school. Dragon Lair, Star Wars, Pac-Man, Missile Command, Space Invaders, Centipede,.. and those great ones.. I love those times..
started making videos on youtube with METAMORPHIC FORCE in 2008 cause I couldn't find a review back then... after 5 years at Channel Awesome & 10 years on my own French channel, I'm still making a living playing games ^^
So well said, the reason I fell back in love with my Dreamcast was because as a father of 2 I only get 15-30mins to play at a time usually and I want to turn on my system be playing immediately and never stop until it’s time to turn off the machine. All these new games are just to much of a commitment, I remember when single player games where like 20-30 hours MAX and shooters were like 6-8 hours first time, anyway I’m a grandpa at heart so …
Ganryu was so good, I played it a lot on the NEO-GEO emulator. One hidden gem beat em up for the mame is Cadillac and Dinosaurs, it should be in every Capcom Beat Em Up collection with The punisher but they're just doing these games dirty.
Unfortunately licensing issues with Cadillacs... it was based on a comic series afaicr... but agree it would be great to see it on a Capcom compilation 🤠
Air gallet is pronounced garret because in japanese L's are pronounced as R's thats why GODZILLA is said GOJIRA , its just a linguistic thing Although GODZILLA was kinda reverse engineered for western audiences, its actually Gojira
But “Gallet” itself is supposed to be a portmanteau of “gun” and “ballet.” In other words, a ballet of guns taking place in the air. So it actually should be pronounced with the hard L’s, but I what presume happened is the voice actress (or whoever directed her) didn’t know about the portmanteau origins of the word and then assumed a Japanese pronunciation with the soft L’s, maybe because the title was even just written in katakana on her script. It’s kind of like how GIF should be pronounced with a soft G because the creator meant for it to sound like JIF peanut butter (for a play on the slogan “choosy mothers/developers choose JIF/GIF”), but since nobody knew the origins, most assumed the more sensible, yet incorrect, pronunciation.
Metamorphic Force is an absolute gem, I found this game about 15 years ago and it has been a family favourite ever since. So glad other people will find it thanks to your video. Keep up the great work, love the hidden gem videos!
Great list. Outfoxxies was an interesting game when I discovered it on MAME many years ago. Really well done. Its probably the first Smash Bros. style game I played. Maybe it is the first.
Really cool list, The Outfoxies looks like the basis for Duck Game nowadays. Very similar gameplay but the level destruction in Outfoxies looks amazing.
A really fun hidden gem I find no one talks about is Sega's Alien Syndrome. Similar in concept to the Escape from the planet of the robot monsters, but not isometric. A lot of fun to play, and pretty challenging.
One of my favourite arcade games no one talks about anymore is Cyber Sled: a sit-down game built with two seats for two players and dual analog joysticks for each. When you play solo, you go up against computer opponents, but you can also play versus with the other player which can get pretty intense. The only trick is, last I checked, this game emulated poorly since it's early polygonal 3D stuff and you absolutely need a dual-axis gamepad or dual flightsticks to play it. :P
Yeah what we need as a whole MJR crew to get together in like have a slumber party and video their events there highlights together watch that like 1,000 times share it share the crap out of it
Not sure how many quarters my 3 buddies and I spent on the Quartet machine playing together dude! It was freaking fun! Love and blessings from Ontario Canada!
Blood Bros is an absolute classic - I played the hell out of that game in the local arcade when I was a teenager. As for some other MAME recommendations: - The Crystal of Kings - Big Run - Thunder Force AC - Osman - Gussun Oyoyo - Hard Times - AB Cop - Gunlock / Rayforce / Galactic Attack / Layer Section (whatever it's called in your region) - Viper Phase 1 - Princess Clara Daisakusen
Thanks for this. The only AAA gaming I do anymore is on steam. Most of the time I'm on my raspberry pie or one of my emulator handhelds. When you or other people i sub to showcase old school games I write down the ones I think I will like and then find them on one of my emulator devices. It's Sunday morning I think I now have a reason to get up and start the day. You're my savior lol
I didnt know that Blood Bros isnt that well known. Stone cold classic much beloved around my parts as a kid. Respect on calling out Outfoxies, absolutely fantastic game that doesnt get enough love.
I have MAME set up on my main computer and a dedicated arcade computer, so I'll have to look these up. I tell you though, there is a game out there I remember playing at an arcade that had been in a mall that had opened up just inside of Ashland KY around 1990. I got the chance to visit a couple of times before moving to Columbus OH in 1991 (I was living in Russell KY at the time). It was a top-down helicopter shoot 'em up, completely forget the name but what I distinctly remember was, when you got to a boss battle the music would immediately switch to a heavy metal song that, for the life of me, reminded me of Japanese 80s metal group Loudness. I dearly wish I could remember the name of the game; maybe I'll just have to play through all the helicopter shooters from that period on MAME :)
Great video! Would love to see you cover CrossBow or Who Dunit… very strange and obscure light gun games by Exidy. I even have some footage of me as a small child playing CrossBow in an arcade sometime around 1988 if you’d like to use it
Ah, I remember Metamorphic Force when visiting Miner Burger way back in the day (before they expanded to have a dining room). For the longest time, I thought it was Altered Beast but was confused as to why Altered Beast never played as well as this game appeared to.
I spent loads of my pocket money on cabal in the late 80's and loved it. I've never heard of blood bros. I'm definitely giving that a go on my cab today. Thanks MJ
I had a friend over recently and we stumbled across Rohga: Armor Force. I'm a big fan of sidescrolling mech games like Metal Warriors and Cybernator, and this is basically a straightforward action version of those classics. Lots of fun in 2P co-op too!
My arcade hidden gem list so far: 1941: Counter Attack, 64th Street: A Detective Story, Arabian Fights (Arabian Faito), Wild West C.O.W: Boys of Moo Mesa, and Martial Champion. Thanks for the list, there's a few I definitely want to check out!
Great video. These all look fun and I'm definitely adding many of them into my backlog. Got so many games on my modded Arcade1Up that you never know all of the cool games you can play.
Metal Jesus your comment on modern games in the beginning is on point and this is what I love being a retro gamer. I would love to see more games from the 32-bit super scaler series. These games were fun and still look great today.
Just got a new retro system console for Christmas and I am seriously overwhelmed by the MAME and Final Burn Alpha categories. Need as many of these arcade hidden gems videos as you can make! haha!
Quartet! I played that game at a wunderland in Portland oregon 30+ years ago and have been trying to remember the game. Totally forgot about this one. 🙏 thank you
Air Gallet is an awesome game that is overlooked even in the shmup community, and was made by ex-Toaplan staff (Toaplan being the company that made Batsugun, which is considered the progenitor of bullet hell games). Very few shmups from that era looked or sounded better than Air Gallet IMO. I used to play Blood Bros a ton in MAME back in the day and it's a lot of fun. Definitely recommended.
Escape from the Planet of the Robots looks like D-Generation meets Berzerk with graphics from Wizard Fire. Something different I wasn’t expecting. Good to see something like this here. I’m sure all of us who remember the golden age of arcade gaming and moving forward have a few gems in mind they really liked playing most people missed out on. My obscure and memorable arcade game experiences were Street Smart, Cabal(w/trackball), Mat Mania, Tutankham, Cloud Master, Fantasy, Pirate Ship Higemaru, and the unreleased Atari arcade game Maze Invaders (discovered this on Atari Vault and its a favorite of mine for Arcade games from Atari. Cannot understand why this was never released. It’s really good and I really like it quite a bit)
I forgot all about blood Bros but i use to play that all the time in the arcade. I also really liked to play Bomberman World Tour in the arcade. It's my favorite Bomberman title. It was always so much fun to see how far you could get with one quarter!
Thank you! Having a blast playing arcades on my PS4 and Xbox 360! Ganryu 2 is coming out very soon! April 22, 2022. When you are in Chicago, Illinois, go to the amazing Galloping Ghost Arcade.
I always have something for "The Crystal of kings" although it doesn't reinvent the beat'em up style, it has a unique art style that I really like. Really cool game.
Here's my list of 8 arcade games for you to cover in the future that are somewhat forgotten & they should all be available on MAME. 1--ZEKTOR 2--ELIMINATOR 3--TAC/SCAN 4--CHOSMICHASM 5--VENTURE 6--SPIDERS 7--CARNIVAL 8--STAR CASTLE
I would imagine what happened with Airgallet is tht its originally Japanese and they cant say the "L" sound, so they sound it as "R" and so a Japanese person would say AirGallet as AirGarret - maybe the voice actor was told what to say and she just replicated it as the Japanese would say it? idk just a theory.
Blood Bros and metamorphic force were made from recycled game engine that were previously used for Cabal and X-Men arcade. Never the less they were good. More hidden gems to mention are ; Alpha Mission 2, Shienryu, Skull Fang, Gundhara, an excellent run and gun game if I may add, Desert Assault, Viper Phase 1.
Do that mid-eighties Tarzan game where in part of it you're swimming through a lake trying to avoid alligators or something and in another level you're swinging through the trees!
As you say, there are 100s maybe 1000s of hidden gems on mame. -Psyco-Nics Oscar (little known data east Run and gun with gradius like weapon selector) -Dragon Breed (Irem horizontal shooter better than rtype?) -Vamf x1/2 (Fighter like dragon ball, super deformed heads) -Thunderzone (data east game like pow but always with guns / shock troupers - 4 player) -Asura Buster (good street fighter alpha looking clone) -Grainbow (Contra like game by seibu)
Smash TV was fantastic. I have that one on an old two player arcade cabinet with a pi 4 but I had to rejigger the controllers as it required both joysticks for a single player game, one to move and the other to shoot. Great stuff!
Arcade games in general keep the back-story to a minimum, or just show it to you in Attraction mode so that when you drop your quarter in, you are immediately dropped into the action 😎
I seriously have to thank you for this video... I remember as a kid seeing a game ONCE, thought it looked pretty cool, and never saw it again. I even tried searching for it based on the blurry memory of what I saw, but the best I could come up with was "isometric arcade game in space"... yeah, good luck finding a match with that. Seeing the video of the Robots from Space game, it absolutely has to be the one, so thanks for saving a tiny fragment of my sanity :P now if you'll excuse me, I think I'll treat myself to a raspberry pie to celebrate...
I love these type of games and think someone should pickup "Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters" and port it over to Switch, Playstation, and/or Xbox.
MJR, as we get older I get more appreciative of games that you can just jump in and jump out of. Simply don't have time for games that are 40+ hours in length.
I have Escape from the planet of the Robot Monsters on the Amiga. I had thought that the game looked a bit choppy and slow for an Amiga title. Seeing this video, it turns out that it was a pretty accurate port.
Action Hollywood, Bonanza Bros, Bump n Jump, Double Dragon, Kung Fu Master, Pang, Sunset Riders, Shadow Dancer, Three Wonders, Thunder Hoop, Toki and xybots.
How do you typically play arcade games? MAME? MiSTer? Real arcade boards? A mix of all of that?
Full size Tron standup arcade cabinet running Mame. Love it.
MAME for sure, but I also bought few model 2 arcade games on PSN, it's a shame you can only play Motor Raid in Judgment.
Please do a hidden gem for Lightgun games
There’s bug princess 2 and is hard yet fun and I keep coming back to play it again on mame
Own some candy cabs and try to buy original pcbs when possible. Shame the pandemic made the cost skyrocket :(
Here's 15 games you should definitely check out:
*Asura Buster: Eternal Warriors
*Battle Bakraid
*Biomechanical Toy
*Boogie Wings
*Crack Down
*Dyna Gear
*Gaiapolis
*Guardians
*Heavy Smash
*J.J. Squawkers
*Monster Maulers
*Neo Drift Out
*Night Striker
*Space Bomber
*The First Funky Fighter

$5 in some arcades on special event days would get you double tokens 😎
The MiSTer crowd are too picky 🤣
Knights Of Valour (IGS)
Martial Masters (IGS)
Night Slashers (Data East)
Vendetta (Konami)

@@tsunamirider9895 Ahhhhh Sega’s Time Traveler!! Loved that game! I thought it was the greatest thing ever at a random truck stop.
i wouldnt mind more of these videos, MAME has a HUMONGOUS library and it'd be nice to know all the best ones to nab immediately.
Have a look at some stream videos from mamehaze (a mame developer). He covered 100's of hidden gems.
Brute Force!
beatemup with a dedicated dive button. 8way action and more guns than most. Fighting through a movie theater, walking through a junkyard and having a punk rocker throw grenades at you standing at the top of a giant mound of dirt!
Playing these old arcade games once in a while is so therapeutic 😊😊😊
Great to mix old school and new, makes you appreciate what you had bitd and have now to enjoy too 👍

Sega was distilled Arcade action at its most finest 👍
Escape from the PLanet of the Robot Monsters is such a great game! A truly hidden classic.
I used to play it every time I saw it in the arcades. Such a hilarious classic!
@@GregsGameRoom Same. Although I only saw it at my local mall, but pumped quarters into it nonetheless.

Me too. It’s was very unique and a blast to play. When I got my emulator it was one of the first I looked for
@@tokenblack7983 it's on an Ages JPN PS2 release also by M2

I believe Ganryu was getting an official sequel on the Switch and on Steam. Look out for it, Ganryu 2. :)
I'm very excited to play gayryui

Air Gallet really reminds me of the Twin Cobra arcade game from Taito.

I've had wolf fang on my ps3 wishlist for a while didn't know it was Rohga, which I have on the iircade. Gonna have to get WF now.
You should do multiple Mame Hidden Gems on different Genres. Like: Shmups, Brawler's, Fighting, Light Gun, Driving and Platforms.
Dead Angle(1988) was my favorite in the "lane shooter" genre. I always loved these games. Wild Guns on the SNES, or NAM '75 on the Neo Geo.

I love Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters. I used to drive to an arcade in a nearby town to play it.
More of these arcade videos please
Magical Drop III is a gem that no alot of people talk in North America. It was re-released on the Switch (likely emulated).
I love these type of games and think someone should pickup "Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters" and port it over to Switch, Playstation, and/or Xbox.
Good timing on Ganryu! There's actually a sequel for it due out on PS4/Xbox/Switch/PC next month.
MJR, as we get older I get more appreciative of games that you can just jump in and jump out of. Simply don't have time for games that are 40+ hours in length.
Yep! 💯
Great video! Please do some more of these, Jamma surely deserves more love!
i think i played that escape from planet robots game on Amiga back in the day, i completely forgot about it, that was a great game
'Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters' had a brilliant soundtrack on the Amiga.
Omg outfoxies....i love that game so much, nobody has ever heard of it whenever i mention it to anybody, it really is a great game.
7:30 reminds me of that Spider-Man arcade game that zooms in when you're doing something else.
Some of the games on the list brought memories back...way back.
