- Official PRIER Products Repair Video--If your Mansfield Style 300, 400 or 500 Series residential hydrant is leaking behind the handle, you can repair the hydrant from the exterior of the structure with parts from the Wall Hydrant Repair Kit part # 630-7755. *PLEASE NOTE: Since the creation of this video, we have updated our vacuum breakers to aluminum caps. These caps are seen on the C-144, P-164 and 400 Series Residential Hydrants, as well as the C-144KT-806 and 630-7500 kits. These vacuum breakers are now universal and will fit all past and present PRIER and Mansfield style residential hydrants.
This video demonstrates the repair of the Mansfield style hydrants that were manufactured by Mansfield until April 2007. PRIER Products has been manufacturing these hydrants since April 2007.
This makes the reassembly very clear, unlike the printed instructions that come with the kit.
Prier customer support was extremely helpful when I called them. I rebuilt my hydrant. Afterward, it was leaking behind the handle. It turned out that the packing nut was not tight enough. I think I was concerned at first that overtightening the nut might damage it. It is working perfectly now. Thank you!

Great content. I'm here because I have already ordered a repair kit. I have Prier frost-proofs which has a plastic packing nut that won't tighten anymore to stop it from leaking. It probably needs the packing to be replaced. The packing nut should be a metal in my opinion. I'm glad that I'm a jack-of-all-trades or I would be broke with all the home repairs that need to be done. I have training in auto mechanics, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, water, and wastewater treatment and even swimming pools thanks partly to my USAF training in Civil Engineering and also my past City employment, and I have since retired as a Utilities Director for a private community.
I ran out and bought your kit and I just fixed my faucet 20 minutes thanks to your great and clear video. I don't know anything about being a home owner or plumber. You helped me so much!

Once we finally got the screw in the center of the handle removed. (We needed to use a oil penetration product and then use a hammer to tap the end of the screw to finally loosen it.) The replacement product works great. We did need to replace the handle screw due to corrosion. I went back to the hardware store and buying the screw required to buy the handle as well at a cost of $7.00. Instead I bought replacement screws from the hardware section, which was much cheaper. Thank you..Repaired my 2 faucets...easy to follow instructions...but that little O ring was hard to find..it was really stuck and hidden...faucets work great..no more leaks at handle area!

These are exactly the steps I need to know to fix my old spigot.
I could not find a video clip telling me the reason for the spigot to totally block the water flow; however, this video will help me fix the spigot (hopefully) without further complications. I only have the 630-7755 package.

You video is very clear and easy to follow but my problem is I can not unscrew the gray handle,used a couple of different sprays to loosen the screw including wd40 and also used different screw drivers counter clockwise. Any suggestion or recommendation.

Unfortunately, at one time the screw for this valve was not stainless steel, causing it to rust. My first suggestion would be to use a good penetrating oil. If that doesn't work, then you may have to drill out the handle screw to remove it. The replacement screw we offer is stainless steel. Let us know if we can be of any additional assistance.

Good video and product. I could have used more detail on the inside portion as the video assumes a straight replace of parts. I found pieces missing on the inside (no screw, missing washers, etc.) I don't know what a cake washer is but I guessed right from the kit. Also guessed wrong on the rubber washer post cake washer. After the continuous leak, I upgraded to a bigger rubber washer. Almost no leak remaining! Found a sweet spot of not to tight in the of position where it stopped dripping. Figure I'm all set until some future full replacement.

Crappy product. The old style water spigots would last 30 years and never need to be replaced. These things are a scam designed to break so the company keeps making more money off of you. Mine sounds like fingernails an a chalk board every time I turn it, I’m going to HD tomorrow and buying an old style spigot.
Great video. I managed to get the screw and beveled gasket stuck in the pipe when I was removing the stem with the leaking bell basket. The screw is turned such a way that it is difficult to remove. Any suggestions for getting the screw and gasket out?
The stem on our 400/500 series hydrant doesn't seem to catch on anything when inserted into the hydrant. All of the rubber parts were replaced. We tried turning on the water to possibly get something unclogged, it still didn't work. Do you have any ideas on how to fix this?

What I have is this, FUSAN ASSE 1019A outside faucet, if I have to replace the packing inside, I am having a hard time finding places that sell this brand's parts. Any help is appreciated. @Prier
3:28 What if we DON'T have a small O ring on the stem end? Could it just have disintegrated? or did some models not have them? Should that inner piece on the stem end that the O-ring extend out easily? Mine does not. Can the permanently sealed stem on your Diamond Series be purchased for the older mansfield hydrants or does the entire unit need to be replaced to get a sealed stem?
First I’d confirm it is a Mansfield valve, there are many valves that have copied that style over the years. Does the stem you removed match the replacement stem? There’s a chance that the threads that are inside that valve are stripped out, however that is rare.
My faucet is Mansfield. The plastic packing nut is WHITE but left thread. So, I made mistake, I tried to loosen the nut but instead I overtightened so bad that the nut is now rounded. I put the handle back in, no more leak BUT I can’t turn the handle at all. The handle is actually on open position now because I left it on open position when I opened the handle. Question is: If I am able to loosen the nut - I am ordering bidirectional bolt extractor - will I be able to turn the handle again? I think I will have to replace the nut and packing washer due to this over-tightening.

Is there any way to remove the stem when a LH packing nut is installed instead of a RH packing nut? I accidentally kept the LH packing nut on when installing a new stem assembly and now I cannot remove the stem to replace it with the RH 5/8" packing nut.
I have twisted the stem assembly as much counter-clockwise as I could and the stem still would not budge.
Hello - I actually got a new stem 123-0093 ( which matches exactly with my old stem) and installed it. But strange- when I shut off the valve it is NOT shutting off. What am I doing wrong. Should the spring loaded portion be aligned in any specific way to shut off . Pl. let me know
The Mansfield 400 series Faucet Stem is a 123-40XX series stem and the Mansfield 500 series Faucet Stem 500 is a 123-00XX series stem.
And I take it one stem is about .025 larger then the other ?
My Mansfield Hydrant is almost 40 year old. The bib screw is stuck in the stem. Is there any easy way to unscrew it without damaging the stem end?
I replaced the packing with the correct packing. However, the packing did not change shape and conform after tightening the nut.
does the o ring not go on the packing nut?
Stem won't budge, no matter where it is in its rotation. I hear metallic clunk when I pull.
After reinserting the stem and threading into place, why does my handle and stem keep spinning counter-clockwise when opening the spigot?
I can't removed the handle after removing the screw. Is there a lubricant that would help?
When I finally managed to remove the screw in the center of the handle, water continually flowed out of the screw hole! That explains why the non-stainless screw was so rusted and hard to get out. I suppose water is getting in at the other end of the stem. Why not have a stem that is permanently sealed at that end? Thanks for the video.
Steven, I believe you have an old 400 or 500 series that was manufactured by Mansfield. Those stems were spring loaded and did not have a stainless screw, which resulted in the issue you are currently having. We now have a permanently sealed stem on our Diamond Series 400 Series Wall Hydrants and all other residential wall hydrants. Epic fail. The stem on my M400 stem did not look anything like the one in the video. I replaced the graphite washer and other pieces as best I could, including a brand-new handle, and the hydrant leaked the same as before. $30 down the drain.
@Prier, my question is where can I obtain parts for a FUSAN spigot, that is what I have for an outdoor faucet located inside of my garage. My spigot is doing exactly what is shown in the video, however I have looked at HomeDepot and Lowes and I do not see that brand listed, do your parts work for my spigot?

How do you get the handle off.
The packing nut doesn't even fit in mine. There wasn't even a nut in my hydrant when I unscrewed the handle. Is there a smaller kit?
Buy plumbers tape for $2 and wrap around plastic packing nut and tighten into place. Done. I first tried tightening nut with no luck, then bought this $20 kit and it did not fix the problem. I simply put tape on the nut and voila, no leak. Buy a steak and six pack with the money and time I just saved u

or silicone sealant?
Mine only leaks when the faucet is on AND the hose is attached. I'm guessing the restriction of the hose is causing it to leak out. Think your solve will fix my problem? Guess it won't hurt to try..

The slot on the screw is GONE. Screw rusted. Tried WD-40 and rachet, no luck. Suggestions??

So how do you remove a rusted handle screw thats frozen in the stem? I've applied Kroil, tried tightening and loosening with a socket and 3/8" drive ratchet. What at one time appears to be a 3/8" screw head is now an 11/32" head due to rust. Why do you not use stainless screws here?
Hi there, thanks for reaching out. Great question. You can try to drill out the screw, or in the worst case scenario, break off the handle with a hammer, and then replace the stem and handle. To answer your question about the screws - before we acquired the Mansfield line, they did not use stainless steel screws. Since taking ownership of their line, we have made many upgrades to the product including stainless steel screws. I know I'm going to have to drill it out, and I'll most likely have to buy a new stem instead of just new seals. What I want to know is why did this one come with a cheap ass mild steel bolt instead of the nice stainless bolt shown in all the videos? And why is the stem length not stamped into the valve so I don't have to shut down my water, take it apart, measure it, order the parts, then have to reassemble it so I can turn my water back on while I wait for the part, then do it all over again when it arrives? A little foresight would go a long way towards customer satisfaction. Should be a twenty minute job, but now it looks like it's going to be a week or longer ordeal. I'm really not impressed.
As stated above, unfortunately the version of this product you have was manufactured by another company before we took it over, so we can't speak for that company's decision on why they used an inferior screw or don't have the stem length stamped on the valve.
We don't stamp the stem length on valves because the body of the valve is used for all lengths, and stamping each of them would increase the cost to our customers.
When we did take over this product from Mansfield, we made as many improvements as we could to prevent quality issues, including a better screw, stem and vacuum breaker.

I'd pay more for a piece that I'd know I could order the parts for without having to disassemble it twice. Poor business decision.

My prier mansfield 164/400 has a rubber sleeve on it and no one shows this.
M300 was working, Now handle just spins in both directions, no water. Inside shut off is on. Screw holding handle on is tight.
John Holland Hi John, It sounds like the stem inside of the valve may be stripped out or broken. What does it look like if you disassemble the valve. Either way you will likely need a replacement stem for your valve.
I dont see how this garbage is supposed to be frostproof.!! Seems every year I'm replacing parts on this thing! This is AFTER turning the water off, draining the spigot, and covering the hydrant with insulation in late fall before the freeze. This year I'm going to remove the whole goddamn stem and vacuum breaker assembly, drain the pipe and fixture, and pour RV antifreeze in there..cap it and cover it with insulation and a fixture cover!! Maybe the parts will survive this year if they stay inside?
What happens if the plastic nut breaks because it was stuck???
The screw in the handle appears to be stripped. I tried different sockets and could not find a match . Any tips to get it out? I tried spraying with WD40.
Unfortunately, it sounds like the screw is stripped and will need to be drilled out.
If that handle screw has been in place for more than a year it is frozen. Use penetrating oil and an impact driver.

It sounds like the outer area of the plastic nut has broken off, so you would need to insert something like needle nose pliers, expand them, and try to twist to thread the packing nut back out. Give us a call at 1-800-362-9055 if you need more troubleshooting help!

@herriga I ended up putting thread sealant on every threaded part, even the screw that holds the handle on, and that did the trick for me. Hope that helps you out.
Still leaks! I used the kit, watching the video multiple times. The only replaceable parts on my unit were the packing washer, graphite washer and small O ring. There is no screw on the inside end to remove. Depressing, as this is inside my house and not something I can ignore.

Informative but the music is irritating.
I did all this. It’s still leaking from the handle. These stupid things are a scam. I just want the old water spigots back. Going to HD tomorrow and buying a regular water spigot and getting rid of this piece of crap.
This video is misleading. Your interior water source does not always shut off at the water heater. You may have to go to either a shut off that may be available outside around your house, or just to be safe turn your water off at the meter.
