  • This bowl was made from a felled Poplar tree on our property. It was finished using a coat of sanding sealer followed by some polyurethane. I then applied some beeswax to give it a little shine. I'm new to woodturning so any advice is welcomed. Thank you for watching!

Wow, beautiful! I love the concept of bringing in the raw wood you cut and making it a work of art.

Eventually that large cloth will catch a snag, or the chuck, and you will find out if your lath is strong enough to pull your arm all the way around the project you are working on.. Fine looking project, well done.

You're absolutely right, started using paper towels now. Thanks for watching!

I have a few pieces of poplar waiting to be turned. I hope they turn out as nice as yours did.

I have been turning since 64 and I wish you would consider getting rid of the huge rag. Small pieces 6x6 folded are sufficient. Your hand positions are good. Keep turning. I still turn three days a week. Beautiful piece you turned. Congratulations!

Hi Frank, I have since gotten rid of the rag and use either a paper towel or smaller piece of rag. Thanks for watching!

Advice ? Looks like you're off to a fine start Newbie ! LOL. You look comfortable with the bowl gouges so that's a big plus - a big hurdle for many. Like the bowl and that you showed where and how you got it ! Did it crack at the pith like Quiet worried about ?
Well ,,, there is one bit of advice ... try not to use cloth because if it snags it will drag you into the spinning piece. Especially a giant cloth like you used here. They recommend paper towels 'cause they'll shred. (and a sleeve or a glove is cloth that can snag too. Ugh.). Thanks for sharing🙏 Take care. -Mike😷
p.s. I use cloth but small pieces if the process demands one - but very small swatches and hold by pinching so if it does grab it'll come out of your grip.

This turned out great, Subscriber number three, I look forward to seeing more! The wood has a very interesting grain pattern in that piece, I hope that pith doesn't come back to haunt you by cracking.
