    Beautiful bowl, Gary! Really nice grain. I know you had to put a little extra time in to get the cracks filled with the slurry but it was worth your effort. Just a stunning finish! We all could learn from your efforts on this one. Great job, my friend, keep'em coming!

      Thanks so much Phil! Cracks are like some friends. Some you really like and some you wish you could change a little.
      These I wanted to change just a little LOL.
      I have my self working on something that I am not sure will be ugly or cool. But too late now so what you will see is what you get.

    That's a nice trick, with the slurry. Unfortunately I have a lot of wood with cracks and so I always have to try to get rid of them. This is a beautiful way. Normally I put wood glue into the crack and then sand so that the dust settles in the wood glue. Thanks for this video Gary. Take care.

    Nice job, Gary! I've never used sanding sealer, but I've heard of doing wet-sanding with polyurethane on furniture refinishing jobs. It sure looks like it works well on new bowls. I admire the level of respect you give to guys, like Phil, when you credit them for tips you've learned from them. It shows a level of professionalism among woodturners that is all too rare in society in recent years. Thanks for the tip; I look forward to giving it a try.

    I really like the idea of creating a slurry with that water based sanding sealer. Those end grain sections can really be a bear to deal with, especially on soft woods. Alchohol based sanding sealers dry far too quickly for your clever technique so I am going give that Minwax sealer a try. That is one huge piece of Staghorn sumac! The biggest I have come across is only about five inches in diameter. I really do like the exoctic green wood of the Staghorn and yes the sap is extremely sticky. Great finish!

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much. I have used oil based wipe on poly but the water based dries faster and sands better.
      I had no idea what this wood was when it was offered to me and did not know this was a very big piece. It was the biggest but I did take some of the smaller 4 inch limbs as well. I is soft and turns a lot like Catalpa which I did get a lot of very big pieces of that.

      We were getting the some trees at a local tree farm and they had it laying there all cut up and the sign said free firewood. I looked at the end grain and said I will take all you will give me. That was the biggest piece of the bunch.
      Only time I have actually seen it but it grows wild in the woods here.

    Great sanding tip! I wouldn’t have thought of wet sanding with sanding sealer. I imagine you could do the same with shellac based if you put a drop or two of mineral wax in it to stop it drying so fast? A gorgeous piece of wood and beautiful finish. Thanks Gary.

    Gary what level of shine is your polycrylic, semi gloss or gloss? I’ve seen Kent Weakly squirt some regular wood glue into cracks then finger press it in followed by hand sanding over the crack which also creates a kind of a slurry which also dries quickly. Similar but also seems to work.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am using the gloss Polycrylic. If it is too shiny you can knock it back with extra fine steel wool or scotch brite.
      I have used wood glue in a similar way but if I can I will use the finish to create the slurry as I feel it blends better.
      On something large to fill sawdust and glue or sawdust and CA will get the job done easier.
      Thanks for watching,

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@coachingangels I am sorry but I guess I have no idea what you are asking.
      If you saw a drill and chuck what are you wanting to know? I have a sanding pad mounted into the drill and I am sanding with it. This is what I thought you were asking.
      Not all sanders are orbital. I use a palm sander (Dynabrade)at work for years. It was orbital and was one of the best you could get. But it would not work for getting into a bowl. Not sure there is anything made just for doing that.
      Many of us use right angle drills for sanders.

    It's another beautiful bowl Gary. I guess I've not had to develop a sanding trick because I don't have access to these gorgeous pieces of wood! The most fiddly I've had was wide grain ash and trying to sand through a narrow-ish neck. All I needed was patience and time to sand. Eventually it gets there. All the best. Ray

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Ray and you nailed it. Patience and time are the key to success. I have been know to put a coat of sealer on it and notice an area that may have small scratches. So I just sand it all off and do it again. But I sure do my best to avoid that added operation.

    Gary,
    I noticed that you use a shelving cushion to go between your jam chuck and bowl. I have tried this method and it leaves indentations in my bowl finish. I don’t know what to do. I don’t think that I am putting to much pressure on the live center. Any help would be appreciated. I love this bowl and I have never seen sumac this large. The sumac I have seen or should I say been around is only 1/2 to 1 inch in diameter. Thanks Keep turning.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kevin,
      I have also seen the markings from the shelf material. I try to let the bowl sit all night after the last coat of finish to avoid this. But if I do not have time what I did on this one and others is use a soft piece of paper towel against the bowl which seems to help. I will show that the next time.
      What I was told is the small vine sumac is poison ivy but the sumac that is a tree is not poisonous.
      I sort of stumbled over this wood not knowing what it was. We were at a tree farm a few years ago picking out a tree to replace the Sweet Gum we had taken out. They had the Sumac laying on the ground cut up and giving it away for firewood. I guess they had delivered one of their trees and took this out for their customer.
      I was in the right place for getting it. So I brought our beautiful Oklahoma Redbud home plus the Sumac.

    I use Titebond wood glue lll for the really deep cracks and I put some of the fine powder from sanding the wood into the crack and on top the glue. I let it dry for 12 + hours and sand off any excess. I then use ca to finish filling the crack and put more fine sanding dust on the glue and let it dry for another 12 hours and do my final sand. It normally sands out very nice but of course the filled crack is still there but looks fairly natural.

    That is a beauty of a bowl Gary - and a big piece of sumac! I’m interested in the sanding sealer trick - I don’t normally use water-based anything on the lathe, and I have tried wet sanding with mineral oil and beeswax (I think 🤔 - its whatever Carl Jacobson and Sam Angelo wet sand with 😂) and I didn’t like that at all. It just made a big nasty mess. I’ll have to refresh my memory on water-based and oil-based finishes and what you can use on what. I do have a small can of water-based sanding sealer on hand, I suppose I should just give it a shot and see how it goes!

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Lisa and I hope to be able to find more Sumac this large.
      I find the water based sanding sealer and the Polycrylic made by Minwax to be a wonderful product. I first used it on a a French door i put in when I remodeled and a table I made our son. Both are still looking good after many years.
      It goes on very easy and can give you a finish equal to lacquer.
      What I like about it is it dries very fast and is easy to sand. This makes it perfect for wet sanding like I did. By all means give it a try and you will see how well it works making a slur and how well it sands after a fairly short time.
      But for sure for wet sanding I would use the sanding sealer not the Polycrylic. Both are water based but not the same product.
      Best of luck,
      Gary

      We have poison ivy around here which is in the sumac family. I think this tree grew in someone's yard and they had it taken down. I got the wood from a tree farm so I am guessing they cut the tree down and replaced it and brought the wood back to their place of business where I found it for free. And for sure it was big, but only a few pieces. The rest was about 3" pieces.

      Thank you Rich, happy you enjoy my videos. I have a couple videos on sharpening and will put the links here.
      This is what I use and feel it is the easiest way to sharpen a bowl gouge
      Slow speed grinder 8" wheels: I have the Rikon which I paid $99.00 for. I think on sale you can still get them for $104
      Then I have the Wolverine grinding system which you can find for $89 and added the vari-grind.
      The grinding system comes with a platform which I use for free hand grinding of things like negative rake scrapers and skews.
      Check these videos out and you can see how I use the systems. And these are what I would recommend.

      I think if you used it as a sanding sealer where you sand it and not build it up lacquer should work over it. But do not put so much on that it builds up. A sanding sealer is just what it says. It seals the wood and helps in the sanding process.

    The central white area is called the pith; in sumac it is very soft. I was once sanding a sumac box with the pith included, and the sandpaper dug in about 10mm before I noticed.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The pith is horrible in Sumac. When I picked up these pieces the pith was draining like honey. Also coming out from under the bark. It reminded me of the rubber trees in Vietnam. They could clean those spiral groves out and it just ran down and out and collected in little cups hanging from the base of the tree.
      After sitting for a few years it hardened up on this piece.

  • @hedge685
    @hedge685 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For everyone's information...that resin you mentioned seeping out of the pith and bark contains Urushiol or Urushiol oil, the allergen in poison ivy. Sumac is in the family of plants with the poison Ivies, sumac, cashew, and Chinese lacquer tree. The Orient processed the resin to produce the black and red lacquers you see on Korean, Japanese, and Chinese lacquer bowls and household items dating back a few thousand years.

      Thanks so much Don, I had not heard of it before it was offered to me. It grows wild in the woods here but I think people plant it in their yards as well. I got it from a tree farm when we were buying a tree.
      The wood was stacked and had been cut(probably at a customers yard) and brought back to the tree farm. I ask about it and they said take what I wanted. this was the biggest piece and I do have some smaller branches left.
      Take care,
      Gary

    I love to see craftspeople at work. Such economy of movement producing excellent work. In 1978 I was a member of Bath motor club and won a 12 car road rally on Saturday and a slalom competition on the Sunday in my 55 bhp Triumph 1300, so we have even more in common 🌞

      Thanks so much Ray. That day in the rain was October 2011. It is my son's race car and he had been asking me to drive in at least one race. So that was it. And sure as could be when I took my time on the track it just poured down raining for the whole 45 minutes. But the good thing is I only gave up 2 spot in the finish. Your Triumph sounds very cool.
      Thanks for watching.

    Great results! Papa, I have a question. Is there any significance to the shape of your negative rake scraper? From the video is appears to not be round as those in other videos appear. Just wondering. Thanks!!

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Pastor Uke! Well very seldom will have the complete round edge of the tool in contact. So I have ground mine with something similar to how you use a french curve. There are lots of options along the edge to fit into the shape I am smoothing up.
      I hope that makes sense but I guess I am saying I have a lot of choices from a flatter curve to the more pointed tip.

    Fantastic job. I really like that finish. I was wondering if that finish is considered food safe?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much. As far as food safe goes I can not recommend that either way. If you google Polycrylic food safe you will see people saying after 30 days it is. I myself would check and see what the manufacture has to say about it.
      Sorry that I am no help but when it comes to being food safe I really am not sure myself.

    Beautiful, I just tried doing it, but only had shellac so probably wasn't as good as what you used, but still turned out well. What kind of polycrylic do you use? Thankyou for all your wonderful demos I learn a lot from you. diana

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Diana, yes the shellac with setup much faster than the water based finish. I use Minwax Polycrylic but I sanded with the Minwax Water Based Poly. I think any brand of the water based would do the same.
      You can also use the oil based wipe on poly to do the same. I use Minwax Wipe On Poly. I am not connected with them and I doubt they even know who I am but I just like the product.
      Bottom line: Shellac and lacquer will work but it will dry out way to fast. That said I have done small areas with shellac.
      Thanks for watching,
      Gary
