Woodturning - How to Create the Perfect Mirrored Finish!

  • As soon as I saw this Yew blank and knew I wanted it. I love the purple strips of colour and pink hue throughout the blank. I thought that it was only fitting to create a somewhat donut shaped bowl, or is it just me that thinks of pink frosting and sprinkles when I picture a donut?
    The bowl has been sanded to 5000 grit and finished with Danish oil and Wood wax. It's around 150mm at its widest point.
    Let me know what you think of this piece! 😁

    My videos are for entertainment purposes only. I am still relatively new to woodturning and some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest. When using any tools or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines.
    Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practise. The gloves I wear are tight fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing.

    Well, that is a very nice bowl. I just wonder why you do not speak or otherwise narrate what you are doing. Your title is "how to create the perfect mirrored finish" but you certainly did not tell us how to do it. I for one am dissapointed.

    The video is titled “How to Create the Perfect Mirrored Finish,” but all I see in terms of creating a finish is sanding through a couple grits, then a blue paper towel applying something, and then a soaked cheese cloth applying something. Could you post what's being used?

    maybe the wood im using is too wet. but when i use grits over about 400 they start to clog up. they get unusable really damn fast as the saps and oils clog the paper.
    am using Cherry i harvested a year ago. its been under the work bench in my unheated wood shop. should i dry it longer?

    • @HarrySmithShorts
      @HarrySmithShorts 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like it could be too moist. Cherry does take a long time to dry out. I put mind in the warm boiler house to speed up the shedding of water. 🪵😃👍

    • @RedfishCarolina
      @RedfishCarolina 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah your wood is too wet. You need to rough the bowl out leaving the walls about 3/4" thick and bundle it up in some paper and allow it to season slowly or it will crack. Once it's dry (can take months) then chuck it back up and complete it.

      Hi Fred. REALLY? sorry to hear that you weren't very well informed - I personally believe you learn more by watching, but thank you for your comment and support. I prefer to let the wood speak for itself and allow the tools to tell their own story as they make their changes.
      However, take a look in the description field (downward chevron next to the title) for more information on products, finishes and the back story etc 🪵😃👍

      As the video is titled HOW to get a mirror finish i would have expected the video to tell you what finishing was used to get the mirror finish. Ofherwise it should have been titled how i made a bowl with a mirror finish.
