      If at all possible, get professional advice on that contract before you sign it. Labels are notorious for taking advantage of up and coming artists, you want someone who knows their tricks to read all the fine print.

      @Squid School I think Im good because I get 80% of the royalties, so I think that's a great deal. They will release one of my songs as a single and then release an EP with the single as the lead track the month after. I've known the creators for a while, and so have my collaboration partners, but thanks for looking out for me!

I don’t know much about what labels are, but it sounds like a contract of some sort, and the last thing you need is to get betrayed by some random clause buried in the label to take advantage of you despite showing it saying you get 80% of the royalties

    all jokes aside, as the kid in high school who was the teacher's pet obsessed with getting perfect grades, i absolutely support everything gem says in this video, and it's really nice to hear it coming from a teacher. university's been really hard to adjust to because people aren't telling me what i need to do anymore, but i'm slowly but surely actually finding out what i enjoy doing, which has been really nice
    stopped playing splatoon 3 actively a while ago, but thoughtful content like this keeps me around. never stop using your platform for good gem ❤

    As someone who struggles to take initiative what ive found helpful is making things super small. In art this has been really helpful because instead of putting alot of time into something thats just going to turn out bad I can put a small amount of time into something that will turn out bad learn from it and then do it again better until i am more comfortable to do bigger and bigger things.

To get in the Good Schools™, you need to be already doing Awesome Things™ without the valuable help of a college education. You need to be a natural. That goes against a lot of what was said previously. "Oh, you made a crappy app? I'm sorry, this person here made a fully working app that has amassed millions of downloads, and we're taking them so they can learn to improve it (before dropping out to start a business and make millions on the app)." "But I can really benefit from a rigorous course of study on software development; they don't need it!" "Don't care. We like cool things."

    Sometimes the reason people struggle to start, is because of executive dysfunction with task initiation - not necessarily a lack of desire to start or willingness to fail.

      this is true! as someone who struggles with this, i agree, but i also think that part of managing the symptoms of executive dysfunction is learning to recognize the difference between an executive dysfunction barrier and other barriers to this phenomena gem is describing. im choosing to interpret his video and argument as directed towards someone who either doesnt struggle with task initiation, or who has their task initiation issues managed with coping skills and other resources. I believe this is the intended interpretation, as task initiation issues are a complete separate topic that require a different conversation than the one being posed here! sending love from autism executive dysfunction hell, may we all be blessed with good brain days, effective coping strategies, and satisfying rest.

      Ngl I kinda avoided looking more in depth the definition of the word Initiative. The way Gem described in this video is "starting something you have never done before."
      But I have a different issue: starting a task, independent if it's new or something that has to continue. There are weeks I heavily struggle with the latter. I don't have the money for treatment, let alone meds, so I'm mostly on my own... It's very tough, even after the amount of research I've done (if you're curious, I'm more than convinced I have ADHD). It's not enough.

      @@_SereneMango Different tools work for each person regardless - I find counting down for myself, and specifically subdividing the FIRST step into as small pieces as possible, helps a lot for me. For example, in order to 'go make breakfast', I have to move my legs, then my arms, lift myself up, and take a first step walking towards the door, rather than just 'go downstairs' as a first setp

      Chiming in as +1 person suffering from executive dysfunction. I am currently seeing a counselor for it, because I want to take initiative and fix it--but it took me an entire year to get my first appointment set up.

    I needed this. I've been stuck telling myself "I've just got to wait for x thing to start so I can really start my life." and everyone has always agreed with me because I've convinced them that I couldn't really be doing anything else. I think this disagreement from my perspective is really what I need to start. I am going to start working towards being a music educator and I just need to start learning more about music. I don't need to wait for a class, or for high school to "just be over already." I don't see why I can't just do this now, and I thank you for telling me that. Everyone has always told me that I need to get my priorities straight and finish my school work. While I do think that's important and I have been doing the bare minimum-I realize that the reason I struggle to do it is because I haven't been doing what I want to do. I've always thought that I NEED do this first so I can do what I want to do LATER. But I think what I need is to start what I want now, so I can have the mental freedom to do what I need. I need to tend to my curiosities about music education instead of TikToks or TH-cam videos-and that will help me in feeling more at ease. So thanks, Gem. For giving me the push I need.

    Can confirm, wanted to play Melee competitively, went to my very first tournament, went 1-2, got 3rd the next time
    Now I've legitimately upset PR players and never looked back. TAKE THE FIRST STEP
    If you want to make a team in Splatoon, find people to make a team with. If you want to get X-rank, find what you need to get to that rank (*cough cough* subbing to squid school might help), and if you want to become the best player in your friend group, region, country, or the world, YOU have to find out how. YOU need to take those steps. YOU are responsible for yourself.

    This video definitely is one of my favorites rn for advice.
    I actually struggled with that fact of "what am I going to commit to?"
    Overall it's why I'm choosing what I find enjoyable.
    Also fun fact Splatoon 3 is my first splatoon game. That being said I have learned a lot of random knowledge and some wisdom about this game because this is a really great side hobby to get into. Despite being REPEATEDLY being asked why. It's okay to get into things others don't care about, just make sure that it is going to be healthy for you.

    I was hesitant to click on this video, but my friend told me to watch it, so here I am...
    Hehe, I can lie just as naturally. Wait, that came out wrong-
    Anyways, I loved the content of this video. Most of it applies to some recent events in my life. I have a friend who's working at an internship, but he feels way underprepared and is starting to wonder if he's even the right person for the job. He's told me he feels that someone else would be better for it than him, because he just doesn't feel adequate enough for the standards of his work. First I listened, then I thought to tell him, he's got to put up with it and make his mistakes at first, but then he'll find out later how he's measuring up to those standards later on. There's more nuance to it than that, but the main point of it was that he's got to persevere after starting the climb.
    Personally, I think one of his problems is that he's only taking initiative on the things he likes to do, but he lets other people determine his worth when they tell him what to do. When he finds he doesn't measure up to those standards at first, he doubts himself, and he starts to complain. I know I can't teach him initiative, but at least I can tailor what I've learned to help him understand the importance of doing so. I hope. We'll see how it works out in the end. Thanks again for the helpful dating advice!
    P.S. Also, I noticed in the comments that while some people do suffer from a more mental health-related problem that keeps them from taking initiative or finishing tasks, I also see that this video's points make sense to the rest.

    i literally say this all the time when ppl ask for art advice. and my advice is just do. in order to make a "good" drawing youll have to make hundreds of "bad" ones. its easier for people who start early bcuz when ur 7 you dont care as much abt the quality so much as drawing a cool dragon and showing it to your classmates. but its the best advice for art i can give. its also the hardest advice to myself to take when i want to do something new. id love to learn how to write but the thought of writing bad makes me sick despite the fact im comfortable making tons of "bad" doodles everyday.

    Something I've heard is that the problem with starting to make things is that before you begin your taste and your ability to make things are at vastly different level. Anything you could produce is terrible compared to what you like. The thing is, you have to bite that bullet, like Gem said. You can never produce something great until you make something terrible enough to learn how. I recently started making some sploon content myself and it has been exactly that. I think the first things I put out are mediocre at best, but even within the span of a few videos, I feel my editing, voice work, and writing have gotten better. They aren't as high quality as I'd like but they'll get there eventually. If your interested in making something do it! It may be garbage, but it's the beginning of a long process of improving! Just go do it!

    Something I think is important to remember as well, is that you learn more about things while you do them than before you do them. Sure, classes for pretty much anything imaginable exist. But especially when you're just starting out with something, you usually don't need to complete this class or watch all these videos or have a perfect understanding of something before you even try to do it. I did a computer science class in university because I thought, hmm, it seems like something I'd enjoy. We spent an entire semester learning stuff like how to manually make a program that switches an inputted character from lowercase to uppercase based on the ASCII code of the character. In C++. Things that programming languages already have built-in tools to do automatically. We never even mentioned objects. And yes, that kind of thing could be useful to know how to do for someone who wants to be a computer scientist, but it absolutely not necessary if you just want to learn to code! That summer I did a Javascript course on codeacademy, and then I started making a Discord bot. The basics from the course were important to know (and a lot more useful than the university class) but I learned sooo much more during the process of actually making the bot, and making the bot helped so much more with remembering things than reading what functions do in the documentation. I guess what I'm saying is that you learn way more about things by doing them than trying to learn everything before you try, so just do it!
    Now, on the other hand, I still haven't actually tried to compose something but don't even get me started on those university theory classes

    This video is what i kinda needed right now lol! I'm learning more advanced algorithms for the 2x2 rubik's cube and uhhh 42 separate algorithms for only one set does NOT sound fun to learn, but I'm ecstatic to be able to get something of a sub-4 second solve on a 2x2 ( and potentially a sub-2 )

      oh god that part about "is that really what you want to do" is hitting extremely hard right now because ive been actively trying to identify barriers to whats keeping me from investing time and taking initiative in content creation. i'm having way way way more funny writing stories and building fursuits and sewing than i am coming up with stream ideas, writing scripts and editing videos. i dont want to ask myself the question of "what would make you happier to do?" because i think im afraid of the answer

    this is so true, i played clone drone in the danger zone competitively for a few months and made the initiative to join skrims for that game, it led to me getting much better at the game and actually figuring out how to improve on my own, but i stopped because i didnt enjoy taking the game that seriously and i way more enjoyed the silly casual side. witch is fine, im out here having a great time in public lobbies goofing off in almost every game. it keeps me invested where as playing competitively burnt me out and i had to take a break from the game. but i would have never found that out if i didnt take the initiative to play competitively and id still be grinding to get good when its not what i truly wanted from the game

    The coding example is sadly correct. Like, in a way that it shouldn't be like this.
    If someone goes to a class to learn programming, but at the end does not have anything to show, what was the point of the class?
    I go to a class, because there are people that get payed to teach me. People who should know better. A class that is designed and whole purpose is to get all the necessary fundamentals you need to branch out into anything you want.
    But instead a vocational training in IT isn't worth shit. Because my 3 years as a trainee is not considered "working experience".
    Even the company WHERE I SPEND THESE 3 YEARS doesn't want me because I never learned the required skills.
    What was the point then? It not even about "initiative". I ask "what would be the best thing to focus on now?" and the answer is a software that isn't even used in the company, or at least is not where they need desperately new staff to tackle the projects that they nearly collapse under. They totally need new people, but they refused to even tell me what I need to fill that gap.
    Imagine the best way to learn japanese, is NOT to attend any classes whatsoever, but to travel to japan and try to survive without any prior knowledge.(at best without knowing english either, because then you could "cheat" by using a world language instead)

    💎 You said it perfectly. I was a tutor for 2 years tutoring AutoCAD so I know what you mean. What a great video. For Splatoon I do what I want and get a different perspective from your videos on different habits I've developed. My favorite perspective change was use your bombs to force a direction on your opponent instead of just try to push them back.

    So I just started learning to draw. I've spent days at this point just drawing squares, circles, and triangles. I still don't draw those shapes very good, but that's the thing, right? the only way to get better at anything is to do it a whole lot. My thinking is that "talent" is fake. Every skill, any skill at all, can be learned by any person who takes the time to train in it. Welding, drawing, physics, music, cooking, linear algebra, whatever-- I find the mentality that helps me is think about it like you're clocking in to the factory. you're clocking in to the _____ factory, where you go and make ______ all day. And the, after a long, hard day at the ______ mines, you go home to your family and have a nice dinner. then, the next day, it's back to the factory. Everything worth doing is a "factory". Sure, you're maybe not operating hydraulic presses creating 800 identical metal parts every hour, but, just like a factory worker, you go, you put in your hours, you get better slowly and over time at what you're doing, and eventually it becomes like second nature-- a skill. Some tasks are deceptive-- they are actually a bunch of smaller skills glued together. but those smaller skills can all be learned the same way-- practice.
    It does suck, though. it's not fun. factory work is long and hard and not (necessarily) fun, although it shouldn't be miserable either. you have to clock in every day and do your hours. there's no way out of it. and a lot of people (myself included) have an easier time developing their skills in a regimented environment where they don't have to manage their own time and be their own boss. Making yourself buckle down and work hard at something even when it's hard is maybe the hardest skill of all, and I'd be interested in hearing if you have any insights on training that particular muscle, the skill of self-discipline and persistence. I know the only thing that works for me is to have another person I can be accountable to, but the truth is there isn't always someone who can fill that role.

    Honestly all facts. I just recently started TH-cam because I needed something that I can call fully my own and not rely on others for. You will mess up and make mistakes, that's how life is and should be.
    Also this all gets easier down the road. Once you become a college student or start working full time, you realize you care less and less about whats expected of you and more of what you expect and want in your life

    My “goal” (if it can even be called that) with competitive Splatoon is to win one tournament: Squid Junction, LSL, or Minnow Cup. After that I’ll probably just drop off the scene. I don’t have the time to push myself much farther, but that’s ok. I have other goals in other hobbies.
    Not entirely sure why, but I really loved this video. It really spoke to me somehow.

    My problem is that I hesitate making the 100 crappy things to begin with.
    I know I'm not gonna be perfect on the first try. It's just that I find myself preferring to do something I'm more familiar with, that I like more.
    And still, I'm more inclined to initiate something if someone else initiates for me or with me.

    i think when they were asking how to make a team, they were talking about where should they go to meet people, I don't want to mess up and go to feet finder to find my team
    (Seriously if anyone wants to make a team with me, i tell them I'm an inkbrush onetrick, and then they don't want to make a team comp that enables me even though inkbrush is in a good spot rn, and im S+)

    I was half way through the video when I realized the point of it wasn't to teach/tell me to not be scared of fights as a ttek just because the map is filled with the other teams paint and there is an ultra stamp running loose, i should take the initiative and still play my role as a front liner.... Still a great video with a lot of good points though

    it's funny how hard it's been for me to realize this about splatoon when it's almost exactly my philosophy on art and when people tell me "i could never draw like you" and i need to pull out 7 years of poorly drawn anime girls to show them that yes they can!! they just haven't made their 7 years of anime girls yet! anyways i guess it's time to take my own damn advice start looking for a team

    yk i take initiative but most of the times i think that the things i take Initiative are boring...
    like: i went to the gym for 1-2 months but then it kinda got really boring so i stopped.
    i kinda wanna re start now but idk if it would be fun... or if i will even enjoy the time there.

      Yeah, I feel you. That's just the reality of it though, not every part of something big you want to achieve is going to be engaging/fun throughout. I've ran into this same problem learning programming, where I have days where I make a lot of progress but get burnt out. That said, the end results are always so much more rewarding in retrospect than what I would've gotten out of spending those same hours watching youtube videos all day. Keeping that in mind is a great help for me. Don't let it discourage you, embrace the fact it's monotonous/boring at times, because it can't always be dopamine all the time.

      @@This-Was-Sparta oooooo this!!!! as a fursuit maker its sooooo tedious hand sewing 8 fingers on a hand paw but then its sooooooo satisfying trying on the paws and having them be soft and squishy and nicely made because i took the extra effort. sometimes even passion can be a slog and you have to find ways to keep it alive even during the tedious parts.... i know i watch a lot of movies when im stitching fingers haha!

      @@PikKraken8 What works for me is divvying up tasks and setting myself small goals for the day. It doesn't need to be something monumental, but steady, incremental process is going to add up quickly. For example "Today I want a camera system that does _x_ under _y_ conditions because _z_.
      I don't achieve my goal every day, because that's just the nature of game development, but things I learn through trial/error make it so I can set/estimate more realistic goals in future.
      Your mileage may vary, of course, but like Gem says, the best time to start is right now. This very second. No matter what it is.
      You don't even need to start producing tangible results right away, maybe even just figuring out a workflow is a first step, all depending on what you want to accomplish.

      @@YukiKoyuki Right? Yeah, that's exactly the feeling I'm talking about. The effort required to do it right makes it all the sweeter when it's done/working. "Chasing that high", so to speak, is a great motivator, at least for me.

    See, i'd play Splatoon more, but uh, i have trash tier internet. i spent almost as much time waiting for this vid to load, at like 240p at best, as i did watching the video.

    I see a lot of Neurodivergent folks upset at this video and I get that as a fellow ND, but i still think theres parts of this video that are accurate even if its painful or triggering to hear.
