  • Here it is folks! Kathy has owned her Model Y since June of this year. It's the 2023 Long Range White on White model. How is she liking this car so far? Any regrets about selling her beloved Genesis GV-60 Performance in on this ride? It's all here... Enjoy!

    I have a ‘21 M3 SR+ and have put over 38,000 miles on it.
    My top 5 likes:
The company. All they’ve ever built is EVs. They are dedicated, knowledgeable, and experienced like no other EV company, and build an amazing product.
The technology. From the screen, to the software, to the phone app, to the OTA updates - all are so terrific!
The driving experience. Yes, I have the cheapest, smallest, slowest Tesla - but it is just a hoot to drive! I love taking it on the twisty mountain roads, whipping it around corners. And fun in the city and on the interstate and the highways and byways.
Capacity. We (2 adults and 2 teenage boys) have gone on family vacations of 7-10 days, 2,000+ miles. For a midsized sedan, it’s amazing just how much stuff it can hold. We’ve put all our stuff in the trunk, frunk, and sub trunk areas. Oh, and a modern spare tire! That kept the passenger cabin free for just the humans!
The Supercharger network. This car has been up and down the West Coast and across the US. In all my drives in 2.5 years, in megatropolisis and out in the boondocks, on interstates and backcountry roads, I’ve never had range or charger anxiety. And only one wait, for 5 minutes, in Glenwood Springs, CO.
    Improvements I’d like:
Lit door handles. At night in a dark setting, it can be very difficult for me to find the door handles. They’re flush with the door, and I have a red car with black trim - meaning if it’s dark out, very hard to find! My wife’s VW ID.4 has lights in the door handle wells that light up on approach. Wish I did too.
Better interior lighting for the trunk and the frunk. It’s kinda dark in there…
As I understand it, my trim has all the speakers as the LR and P trims (save the subwoofer), they’re just not enabled. It would be great for customer and Tesla alike if there was a way to buy access to those speakers.
An alert for approaching traffic behind and to the sides. For when one is backing up out of a driveway, or in a parking lot. My wife’s VW ID.4 has a really good alert system for those situations.
Mechanical door releases for the rear doors, similar to the front doors’ design.
A 110/120v household outlet in the passenger cabin and a 12v outlet in the trunk.
In my 50+ years of driving, I’ve never had a car as fun, easy to live with, inexpensive, and advanced as this, my poor man’s Tesla. Many more years and miles of driving pleasure ahead!
    Safe travels all!

Poor man's Tesla... coming hopefully in 2025! I also have a poor man's Tesla, and agree it is fantastic. I believe the refresh Highland has added manual opening for the rear doors. Your other wants are all solid things, and I don't understand not allowing access to the already installed speakers - so wasteful and contrary to much of what Tesla stands for. Someday. Model 3 with LFP baby, great great car for a poor man like me!

Your cons list is spot on. The visual sensors are not good enough, the rear visibility is atrocious- especially when it's snowing and you're going at low speeds. The car user interface is designed for the car to drive itself, but then they tell you you're responsible for the safe operation at all times. Give me some ultrasonic sensors

Cooled seats would make the car a completely different car for southern states (aka an actual good buy) but let's not pretend the price cuts are actually price cuts, most people will finance, and for every price cut the APR has gone up. The price for most buyers will really remain the same.

Thanks for the pros and cons. I agree with all the pros, but the cons were mostly ancillary issues. Stiff ride quality and cabin boominess are my top issues with my 2020 Model Y. Seat comfort (thicker material, more bolstering and leg support) could definitely be improved, particularly in back. When I was at a Tesla showroom to test drive the new model, the sales person claimed the lack of ultrasonic sensors was a plus. I could tell even before leaving the parking garage that "vision" is very inaccurate if not sloppy at estimating my distance from nearby objects. The new "comfort suspension" may soften bumps slightly and cabin rattles may have been reduced, but the boominess when driving over uneven pavement remains. Not much of an upgrade over 2020. Overall, the Model Y is a very good car that could be great. Hopefully we will see this in the upcoming refresh.

  • @Agg1E91
    @Agg1E91 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yes! re: cameras only. Tesla removed the USS without having the "human sight" stuff worked out for general use. Why not keep the USS until the V12 FSD or whatever is fully deployed? Now, I have neither. I have SW that would greatly benefit from USS, and really, pretty much needs it, but doesn't have it. Seeing the squiggly line and the constantly changing distance numbers as you draw close to something, is not confidence boosting and doesn't speak so well for a company which leads with technological innovations and creativity.

  • @papadave9061
    @papadave9061 ปีที่แล้ว +6

The biggest feature I never knew I needed/wanted is the rear camera/sensors/warning. In our climate, heated seats/steering wheel is also great.
I sometimes wonder how some of the newer generation would do in an older car w/o power steering/brakes, AC, and in the case of the old VW beetles.....heaters that didn't work very well. They'd probably adjust, but it's hard giving up what you already have.
Don't forget Dave, Kathy has a contract. 🤣🤣 Give Elon a buzz and tell him Kathy will buy it if he makes one with the massaging seats.

I can say that what I love most about my Tesla is… it has no tailpipe. Of course, any EV doesn't have one. I also appreciate the Supercharger network. Yet that will be a moot point by 2025 with the NACS transition. And I like having "Dog Mode." I commend that other EVs are starting to have such modes. What do I hate about it? The phantom braking; ping-ponging between lanes when trying to use auto lane change; paranoid merging; red steering wheel alarms; having to touch through several screens for certain features and settings. My wife hates the seats… indeed, the whole car.

  • @Agg1E91

From a design perspective, I am "meh" on looks. Not good or bad. Maybe a *little* dumpy (my previous car was a Miata so my perspective is a bit skewed). But I honestly, almost hate the roof. Due to other considerations I chose the LRY over an LR3 but I much preferred the 3's roof layout. Honestly I'd prefer an option where the roof is just solid.
In Texas from about June-September it really contributes to interior baking, which, even with windows vented, leads to 130+F temps. I have a liner in place which I'll use for another week or so. but it only marginally helps.

I rented a White Model Y LR w/black interior (maybe I should start a TH-cam channel) and it had a definite suspension improvement. Still lots of horsepower! Now I prefer the LR over the very stiff suspension in the Performance. The Autopilot Beta has too much ghost braking and the interior is too sterile. I travel a lot on business and as a business owner, I choose what I rent. I wish Hertz would start renting out the Model S/X size.
Every Tesla I rent has a quality issue. Most are interior materials or fit & finish issues. The latest rental had a strange gearbox whine from from the front motor; otherwise something I’d happily buy/lease.

KATHY 😊 Here’s a simple trick to knowing how far to pull into the garage. Here’s how-have Dave hang a fishing bobber using fishing line from the ceiling of the garage. Place it where the bobber taps your windshield when you pull in the garage therefore telling you where to stop. My engineer FIL did this and no one ever pulled too far into the garage ever. My MIL said it was the best life hack for her ever. Pull right in and when the bobber taps the windshield, stop. Perfect every time.

The GV60 is way quieter and smoother on the road. The Y is nice, but in my opinion can't hold a candle to the GV60. I realize the charging network and range may be better but the Y seems so lacking compared to the competition in creature features. The lack of heads-up display, no real parking sensors, no ventilated seats, no carplay, everything crammed on the screen and inconsistent build quality is what led me to sacrifice the range and worse charging network and go with the GV60 performance. Nice Y though. To each is own. That's why there is competition. Everyone has different preferences.

Anecdotally, I second the external build quality. I bought a 23 MYLR at the end of August and other than a nickel-sized "chunk" taken out of the front bumper (and some *very* minor and small scuffs on one light cover) there were no issues at delivery. Took Tesla about a month to get a replacement bumper, prep it and install it. No charge obviously.
As far as actual operation, I have no physical issues or concerns. There is some software screwiness with some EAP/CruiseControl edge cases.
And now that Texas weather is topping out in the upper 80s, I am actually getting decent watts-per-mile. In September I was running 350-400 W/m. Ugh.

Dave, we have 2 '23 Tesla Y's in our family and 2 separate Tesla accounts. We sent each other invitations to the other's car within the app, so that we could drive using our own settings. We couldn't figure out another way to do it from inside the car. How do you keep notifications separate for the two cars? I don't want to get his notifications or updates, but I can't find a way to stop them on the Tesla website or any Tesla channel. I know you and Kathy must experience this with your 3, her Y and your upcoming X. Thanks in advance for the answer to this question. I'm sure there will be many such conflicts with more families getting multiple Teslas.
I agree with Kathy about the roller cover in the trunk. It's too big and bulky. I disagree with her about the ride, I would like it a little softer. I also would like to be able to unlock all the doors at once(Including the driver). I totally agree with Dave on the ultra sonic sensors. I always find myself too far away from the curb because I have no measurements that I can trust. They should have left the USS in place until they added a front bumper camera.
Enjoy your channel and thanks in advance for the answers.

You are wrong about more sensors = better. When there are conflicting data, which ones to trust?

Check the passenger windshield wiper to see how close the arm is to scratching the paint under the hood. I'm on my second Tesla and the one thing I don't like, is that Tesla still hasn't added many more service centers. Mobil service is great but they can't fix everything and having to drive hours to a service center is not cool. But to help educate you, 110 volts doesn't exist in the U.S., its been 120 volts for almost 100 years. So it's not 110/220, it's 120/240. :)
But there are no blind spots if you turn your head to look prior to changing lanes, like the law requires. I agree though that more sensors is better, even adding FLIR. Elon is wrong that vision only is enough. It might work in say another decade but not now.

Teslas never give you the RANGE they said... on a freeway give you 215 miles on a full charge.. instead of 330 model Y... don't buy it...

The new M3 has blind spot monitoring so hopefully the revised MY will have it (and massage seats of course)

Front Bench on front seats are to short for people over 5'10" . Not a fan of the glass roof do to heat.
Still the fitment is off but better than before. I don't trust auto steer in high traffic or around construction or
questionable roads. The rest of it is amazing. Don't like the park button on the stock to easy to hit it.
Range could always be more . they have dropped the price 6 k since the begging of the year. (after the 13.5 k drop so 19.5k
total and then there are the aftermarket state federal and local rebates)

“To me more signals are better”
Not if the company goes bankrupt, Dave, as Lucid will. Also, more *types* of signals lead to a fusion problem (why cruise cars have huge computers in their trunks), so now you have both a component cost as well as compute cost, not to mention maintenance cost and a supply chain cost.
