This port is NOT the definitive version. They removed the director's commentary, which was a really awesome reward for completing some very difficult challenges, they butchered the soundtrack, which is especially an issue when you do the Ms Ruby battle since her music is no longer synched to her attacks, which was the whole point of the battle in the first place. The Sly Collection has solid ports of 2 and 3, but 1 was hurt and is far superior on PS2 despite the lower resolution.
I'd like to disagree sir, I got this game when I was seven after playing it at my buddies house. It was the coolest and funnest game I'd ever played , and now 7 years latter Its still one of my favorite games among sly 2. It has smooth controls, good but comical graphics and the variety of characters and gameplay mechanics keeps it from feeling dated and reparative, all in all I do think sly 2 is better but its still a masterpiece that I would recommend to anyone looking for a fun game.
Awesome! Got the PS2-version, got the PS3-version... love 'em both! Can't wait for the other two reviews! Oh, and don't forget the Move-exclusive mini-games... ;)
Thank you Derek for finally getting around to doing the PS2 masterpieces. After you are finished with the Sly Cooper series, I would recommend giving the Ratchet & Clank series a go. Great Review by the way.
You're reviews are great Derek, but you spend the entire video being clever or general about the game. I wanna see you go into more detail with the other reviews in this series about the game.
Derrick, I've gotta say, as a platformer fan, CGR Undertow is starting to become my favorite CGR channel. Mark's great and all, but he just doesn't understand the magic of so-called "kidsy" games like this. If I were wearing a hat, I would tip it to you.
I got this game last weekend and is excellent value. I never played these on the PS2 and there excellent platformers. Makes a great change from all the shooters that I been playing lately... Would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes platform games!
sly 1 was the best sly game ever made in my pinion. no extra characters to play as, constant platforming and great level designs, great everything. loved it and still do.
Sly Cooper was such an awesome platformer! Completing all of the Master Thief Sprint runs was especially fun and rewarding. I really hated the direction they took with the sequels though.
It's funny how many reviewers use "this game is pretty good for a ps2 title/standards " , If they have to say it so many times that's because there is a shit ton of ps2 games that have high quality.
Well, it's not really "ruined", I worded that wrong. The music in the battle is off sync from the original and the fight is really based off of rhythm. It makes it harder than it should be, but that's the one problem that's in it. It shouldn't stop you from buying the collection.
I agree. Why they took the bottles out of 3 I'll never know. I also enjoy the setup for 1 more than 2 where it's a space, and you choose your level. Just seemed cooler. And DON'T get me started on Carmalitta's (sp?) voice change... ugh...
I feel like the only one that likes sly cooper 1 as the best in the series. Like Danny says, "Sly dosent need all these fancy new gimmick innovations added to his game, hes to good for that". Sly cooper 1 almost felt like crash bandicoot in a way and i used to call it, "Sly Bandicoot." Nothing can top the first game and suprisingly might be my most favorite platformer game of all time! Those time trials in the first one also really test your platforming skillz! :) Who else thinks Sly Cooper 1 is the best Am i Really the only 1? Did suckerpunch REALLY need to switch the formula from the first game into 3 exploration mediocre sneaky games? (btw, 4rth sly cooper is my second favorite because i thought it was cool you could play as sly's ancestors)
+VoodooMystic thank you, someone finally points out the difference that sly 1 is like crash bandicoot (but different enough to be its own game) but than sly cooper 2-4 like an adventure puzzle quest which is less interesting and fun to me
+VoodooMystic camera was fine for the most part in my opinion and the reason you say it's to short is because it's so awesome lol I feel the same way but honestly I say that was a good time length for a action adventure platformer
+VoodooMystic definitly the worst part but I got used to it they could have either added them or not it was whatever. I wanna play this game again actually lol
that quicktime even battle was perfect! lol good talking mr Voodoo! For the heck of it, Ill just end this with my top ten ideo games of all time (In my opinion) (No Particular order) Good talking with you! 1) Sly Cooper 1 Thevious Racoonus for ps2 2) Kingdom Hearts 2 Hd Remix 2.5 for PS3 3) Super Smash Bros Melee For Gamecube 4) Resident Evil 4 For Gamecube 5) Sonic The Hedgehog 1 or 2 for Sega Genesis (cant pick lol) 6) The Evil Within for ps3 or ps4 (Very challanging but fair) 7) Super Street Fihter 2 the New Challangers for SNES 8) Crash Bandicoot 1, 2, or 3 for Ps1 lol 9) Def Jam Fight For NY for ps2 10) Dragon Ball Z Budakai 3 for Ps2 and alot of honerable mentions like The Last of Us, Heavy Rain, Spyro 3, and you know, good games :P
FUDGE! I'm stuck here... i can afor 1 game. and i do want to buy a HD Collection... But i don't know wich to buy... Jak Collection? Sly Collection? Or Ratchet Collection? Hmmm.... Think think think.Dx
I love the Sly Cooper series. I've beaten all but Thieves in Time. The only thing about the first game that I dislike is the one-hit deaths. It gets really annoying when you're going through long stretches in levels and you get killed right when you least expect it. What makes it even worse is that if you get killed before you get to a checkpoint, it sends you all the way back to the beginning of the level.
Damn I only played the first one, but I LOVED it. And I don't usually get sucked into a game to the point where I seriously don't want to stop playing.
Not a big deal or anything, but 100%-ing this game is one of the most satisfying things I've ever done in a video game. One of the absolute best from the PS2.
And you know it's actually kinda funny, I went to get the Sly Collection day 1, but I didn't get it. The compilation came out the same day as CoD: Black Ops and that game had gotten so many preorders, the Gamestop in my town didn't even bother to order any copys of Sly Collection, which sucks because the copy i eventually bought of CoD: Black Ops, I sold a year later. That was about 5 years ago, I still have the Sly Collection.
Finished it today for the first time. I streamed it via PS Now. It's a fun game. After all these years it's still an enjoyable game. For the most part the gameplay was much better than I expected but in some parts it understandably feels dated.
@Davyn94 Same here. Mark is okay, but his reviews of non-arcade type games seem pretty lacking in comparison to reviews of games like Truxton of Space Harrier. I'm guessing he doesn't hold much attachment to the deeper, bigger game experiences. Instead being attracted to the quicker, cheesier arcade experiences that once dominated gaming.
Dude these games are some of the best for ps2 this series is my childhood. Controls are great characters are memorable story is simple and is one of the best series ever. Go buy it right now
As a cartoonist and animator, I love the designs of these games. Can't really say I agree with Sly's design looking Dreamworks-ish; the artstyle is more unique than that. Good review though.
I just got the Hd collection a while ago and it is indeed Very Nice. While I prefer the style of Ratchet and Clank the most (+the fact there on PS3), I have to say That the most awesome by FAR is the Jak and Daxter series There's gonnna be an hd collection on that too in Febuary. Jak and Daxter: Platformer + Good story Jak II: Platformer +Epic Story +Nice shooter +Sick Powers Jak 3:Platformer+Epic Shooter+LARGE Open World+Epic Powers/Abilities +Even More Epic Story!
Next Sonic the Hadgehog, Sly is by far my favorite platformer series. It has slick controls, lots of creativity, fun levels to speed run and lots of replay value and brings reminds me of some of the old satureday morning cartoons i use to watch as a kid like Sonic SATAM and Batman the animated series. Of the PS2 triple threat (Sly, Rachet and Jak), Sly is in my opinion the best of the 3. Funny how the best one actually was the least successful. Sly only sold modestly well.
@Bigsmoke930 I agree in some perspectives. Yet, i haven't tried any of the ps2 ratchet and clanks. Only played A crack in time on the ps3 and a little bit of Tools of destruction and it was awesome.
There one big thing that I fellt that they shouldv fixed in this port... And that sly eyes... "No, Im not going the Sonic fan rage way here... just listen." The eyes often pops out of the mask he wears and the eye lids in the model is really chunky and weird.
Im currently cracked the hell out on it. I loved them back in the day. Rocked part one and rocked part 3 but 2 my enjoyment!(as im currently cracked out on the psn) I never beat part 3. Just butsed out sly. mmm
Have beaten all 3 games and got the PLATINUM Trophy. Didn't play them on PS2 since I was all over Jak and Daxter. Now I did and now I understand why so many wants him back on PS3. Great games, realy great! Now if we could get a Jak and Daxter Collection I would scream so everything vibrates. Hmm, no since I allready have a very dark voice I would tip things over. Ah anyways we are still waiting for that.
i just got this game from the playstation store and am about to play this one and the other ones for the first time ever. but really? better than crash freaking bandicoot? wow i guess i should be excited then for when it finally finishes downloading
The Sly Cooper games were definitely some of my favorite games on the PS2. I liked the first game, Sly 2 was fantastic, but Sly 3 was sort of missing something and it put a rotten taste in my mouth.
got this as a suprise christmas gift.i had never heard of this game and i immediatley thought this would be a crappy because most games i dont ask for christmas end up being garbage( terminator salvation for example) but i played it aliitle i thought it was one of the best platform games ever lol cant wait when sly 4 is released.
This is the most Nostalgic game series for me.
me too :)
Derek and Mark are still my video game leaders.
YEEEEEEEES! Undertow knows Sly! AWESOME! :D
Please review the other two games, guys!
I just bought the collection. Got it for $10.50. Not a bad price for 3 great games in HD. I'm enjoying it already.
Wow, I was just looking for this the other day on your channel.
I just beat the first game. Moving on to Sly 2.
If I have all three games for the PS2 should I buy the collection for the PS3.
I bought it today too. Brings back memories :P
YES! I wanted them to review these games.
@MAT0R0 So you can buy weapons and upgrades to use in battle
You're reviews are great Derek, but you spend the entire video being clever or general about the game. I wanna see you go into more detail with the other reviews in this series about the game.
Not to be mean about you not liking the animal characters but i think being a STEALTHY NINJA-LIKE RACCOON IS A WIN-WIN
This is one of my favorite game series of all time, and one of very few that I beat all the way thru.
I've passed on this franchise for so long...not sure why. Yet, I now have a renewed interest to pop in the Futurama game.
sly 1 was the best sly game ever made in my pinion. no extra characters to play as, constant platforming and great level designs, great everything. loved it and still do.
Did you know Sucker Punch made Rocket on the N64.
Yes. They are fun.
@MegamanEXEv2 Huh? WHat was that noise??
I spent almost 3 years of my life with playing the Sly games, totally worth it.
Just out of curiosity, do more people like sly 1's health system or sly 2/3's? SLy 2's and 3's are the same by the way.
Hmmm I have had the The Sly Trilogy in my collection for a few months but I haven't gotten around playing it yet :O
Sly Cooper was such an awesome platformer! Completing all of the Master Thief Sprint runs was especially fun and rewarding. I really hated the direction they took with the sequels though.
These games were really famous along with other platformers in the ps2. Jak and daxter, ratchet and clank, sly, and many more
It's funny how many reviewers use "this game is pretty good for a ps2 title/standards " , If they have to say it so many times that's because there is a shit ton of ps2 games that have high quality.
Well, it's not really "ruined", I worded that wrong. The music in the battle is off sync from the original and the fight is really based off of rhythm. It makes it harder than it should be, but that's the one problem that's in it. It shouldn't stop you from buying the collection.

Jak and Sly cooper are some of the most underrated games in history.
@IIEMProductionsII Soon. First quarter of 2012.
Y u no rotate heads while using binocucom?
were do i buy this game and howmuch on ebay?????
Good review but it worries me that you only showed one mission maybe that's just all you recorded?
I feel like the only one that likes sly cooper 1 as the best in the
series. Like Danny says, "Sly dosent need all these fancy new gimmick
innovations added to his game, hes to good for that". Sly cooper 1
almost felt like crash bandicoot in a way and i used to call it, "Sly

+VoodooMystic does anyone else? Or would you like to say the first one fits with the other 3? Lol

FUDGE! I'm stuck here... i can afor 1 game. and i do want to buy a HD Collection... But i don't know wich to buy... Jak Collection? Sly Collection? Or Ratchet Collection? Hmmm.... Think think think.Dx
1;45 why doesnt he just slide on his staff?
What is the point collecting the coins in that game?
I remember it being called Sly Raccoon. Region 2 or?
I am thinking about getting the trilogy on the VITA. What do you guys say?
These are my favourite games of all time!
I love the Sly Cooper series. I've beaten all but Thieves in Time. The only thing about the first game that I dislike is the one-hit deaths. What makes it even worse is that if you get killed before you get to a checkpoint, it sends you all the way back to the beginning of the level.
wasn't this for the ps2 too?
Is this game ( the Collection for
ps3 ) worth buying?
Please give me
other reasons than trophies... Because I won't buy a game just
for that...
Damn I only played the first one, but I LOVED it. And I don't usually get sucked into a game to the point where I seriously don't want to stop playing.
Not a big deal or anything, but 100%-ing this game is one of the most satisfying things I've ever done in a video game. One of the absolute best from the PS2.
sly is back baby
"Its like Metal Gear Solid if Snake was a real snake"
you have to love this !
Got this and Jak 3 for $5 each brand new from Five Below
And you know it's actually kinda funny, I went to get the Sly Collection day 1, but I didn't get it. dude i loved that shifty little bastard sly xD these games are gold
i never got into the sly series but when i say that the game was coming onto vita i know seem interested
@spiderking97 This game has sold over 1 million copies so you don't need to worry about people not knowing this game exists.
Very nostalgic for me.

@uut0 Yes it was for ps2
I have played Sly 2 and 3 DYING to play 4 and while im waiting for the 27th of march im going to play the first one

The only game in the series I don't dislike :D
4:18 - "Huh? Just a barrel...."
@paincakes911 Who doesn't want that? I'd be itching with excitement to hear that that would happen.
@AssasinsCreedBlog I mean the white from the eyes goes through the fucking eye lids... thats even more seturbing dont you think?
This game is my Ocarina of Time, my Final Fantasy VII, and my Metroid.
Hmmmm that avatar.... you dedent happen to now Voodoo vince?
sly series is way to underrated
@Bigsmoke930
I agree in some perspectives. Yet, i haven't tried any of the ps2 ratchet and clanks. Only played A crack in time on the ps3 and a little bit of Tools of destruction and it was awesome.
sly cooper is my favorite series of all time, yep I said it
@Noblechief12345 *Facepalm* They had footage from at least 8 levels within the game
Just butsed out sly. mmm

Now if we could get a Jak and Daxter Collection I would scream so everything vibrates. Hmm, no since I allready have a very dark voice I would tip things over. Ah anyways we are still waiting for that.
The PS3 port the definitive version? That's debatable, the Mz. Ruby boss fight is sort of ruined in the port.
i just got this game from the playstation store and am about to play this one and the other ones for the first time ever. but really? better than crash freaking bandicoot? wow i guess i should be excited then for when it finally finishes downloading
The Sly Cooper games were definitely some of my favorite games on the PS2. I liked the first game, Sly 2 was fantastic, but Sly 3 was sort of missing something and it put a rotten taste in my mouth.
Please Sony, release a Ratchet & Clank Mega pack with all the games from Ps2 as well and you are golden!
Does anyone ever want the Ty series for the ps3? The 4 best diffrent game series ever!
got this as a suprise christmas gift.i had never heard of this game and i immediatley thought this would be a crappy because most games i dont ask for christmas end up being garbage( terminator salvation for example) but i played it aliitle i thought it was one of the best platform games ever lol cant wait when sly 4 is released.
and now we have a Jak collection... Now I just need a Ratchet collection god danged
Imagine a Ps5 remake
this was my first ps2 game =P
