Hey Brett, I’m surprised you didn’t get the SG tourist pass at the Airport, it allows you to travel complete bus & train (MRT) network for $10SGD for one day, $16SGD for two days & $20SGD for 3 days. Singapore is so easy to get around on the MRT, you get trains every 8 mins or so . The only reason I could see catching a grab ride share taxi is if you are staying out beyond 11:30pm when trains will be on their final trip of the night or if you are going to some far out corner of the island. I caught the train back to the Airport & you get a small amount back when you return the tourist pass.

I dont like how foreigners always think Singapore is so expensive when truly it isn't. All of these business report of "worlds most expensive city" is really meant for wealthy expats. If u enter the city anticipating it to be expensive it will feel expensive
Cheap goods are everywhere u just need to look in the right places and stray away from the touristy areas.
My gorilla pod is from Sim Lim Square tech mall, 4$, been using it for 5 years, food is definately cheaper than most cities with hawker centres and taxis are far cheaper than other cities.

I would have to say if you compare the food to other countries it definitely is not as expensive. But they consider in the factor of our wages here, as well as rent, houses, cars, and of course the taxes and more. If you do consider our wages in terms of what we have to pay. It definitely is expensive.

Tbh I think we're being a bit too harsh on him: he did say at the end that the Grab rides and food options were quite cheap. Given the fact that he's staying in the city and may not probably travel to the heartlands, the food options he chose were rather ideal. And he did the hack to Sentosa: walk into the island, then take the train inside as travelling inside Sentosa is free!
Some tweaks I would have done:
    - Other hawker centres in town such as Tanjong Pagar Plaza Market and Chinatown Complex would have been great options
    - Sim Lim Square is a great place for cheap camera accessories
    - Instead of taking a Grab, Gardens by the Bay is accessible via foot from Bayfront MRT (and it's probably a more scenic way to travel in too)
    - Probably not go to a club lol but if it's your only time in Singapore, going to Marquee sounds about right

I think this “expensive city” title is for residents who have to pay the taxes and fees, i.e. SGD 10,000 just for the privilege of owning a car. But for a visitor, it’s not expensive at all. Yes! You can definitely get a filling meal for $5.

taxes are extremely low... first $20k = $0 income tax and an average salaried man making $30-50k a year pays $100-300 (for the whole year). GST is 7% and common folks get annual GST vouchers of several hundreds to offset this. The people who will feel it to be expensive are people who want luxury items... ordinary living is extremely low cost, almost ridiculously cheap.

I'm an expatriate in Singapore from 🇮🇹🇮🇹. It's a really expensive country but it's so worth it. We are so advanced and changi airport has been crowned most luxurious airport several years in a row. In terms of the gum rule that is a rumor. It is completely legal to chew gum but illegal to sell it or spit it on the street. In terms of bubble tea, a place I would recommend is LiHO. It's very affordable and I would recommend it. Places to stay without a budget would be air bnbs. Once you come with no budget (I know you want to come back), you should try Din Tai fung. I'm pretty sure they have one in nyc but in my opinion here in sg it's better.

Live here since 18 years. Rooms can be pricy, but most of the other things you can do on a budget. Transport is good and cheap:taxis, bus, mrt. Better then in the US or Europe. Food the same, lots of the sightseeing is free, some museums are free. There is a lot of things you can do for 100 bucks. Just maybe 2 things: 1) coffee is dirt cheap here. Nobody drinks those fancy designer coffees if you on a budget. You can get coffee, good coffee...for a dollar at stalls and places such as Toast Box. As you would in most large asian cities btw. 2) I’m a photographer and you definitely can get much cheaper accessories for your camera. But of course not in the shiny shops in the middle of the city or tourist areas. Yes, Singapore can be expensive too, but the cool thing is thete are often essential options foe various price levels. That goes for food, transport and housing. As a traveller on a budget though, you propably can enjoy more things in other parts of south east asia.

I'll take it. City Backpacker Biber for 30 CHF a night. For breakfast, probably something from Ässbar or something light for like 8 CHF. First day I'll just explore the city -- lake Zürich, free museums, Grössmünster and Fraumünster. The library. For a quick lunch since I'll be walking around I'll just get something to go from Migros. Maybe the set meal as it's more filling. That's about 12 CHF. For dinner I'll go to Louis Takeaway because I absolutely love the burger there. 20 CHF or less for a great burger, fries and a drink. Even cheaper if I have a student pass. For the nightlife, I'll get some alcohol and drink by the lake or just roam the streets. I'll maybe buy a drink at a bar if I feel like it. The next day I'll buy the 9 o clock pass or day ticket for ~15 CHF. Grab something light from Migros. Emi Latte and Knusperbröt and a bar of Swiss chocolate. Probably < 10 CHF. Picnic at the top of Ütliberg. For lunch I'll take the ship ride in my Tageskarte to Rapperswil and have lunch there. Maybe a pizza from Dieci while I admire the river view. Probably 20 CHF for a whole pizza funghi. I'll explore awhile and head back to Zürich for dinner. Takeaway from Burgermeister. Or if I'm not planning to spend on nightlife, probably I can splurge and go to Swiss Chüchi or Zughauskeller for a traditional Swiss dinner. The veal meat in mushroom sauce, Zürich art. All in all less than 100 CHF a day. :p Experienced Asian (skimping tendencies) whom lived in Switzerland for 6 months heh heh.

Singapore was put as the most expensive country in thr world because the study included the cost of a car as a necessity, shooting us right to the top. In SG, most people actually take public transport. Cost of living is actually on par with many other major cities in the world or even cheaper.

No it’s the most expensive city. Try Tokyo, HK, London, NY, Seoul, LA.....now those cities are EXPENSIVE!

I love Singapore, it's my closest world city. Also it's not so expensive as people think if you know where to go and shop for groceries where the locals shop. For the traveler Food in Singapore (best on Earth) is cheap by Australian standards and accommodation is on par with Australia's state capitals. Transport is also pretty similar to Brisbane though less expensive than Sydney or Melbourne.
There are many hidden costs built into the social fabric such as government housing that removes a significant slice of your income but is a way of imposing forced financial security upon retirement. Private housing on landed property or in private developments is only for the top tier of the population. And forget about owning a private car unless you have spare money to burn or throw away or a really massive ego. Public transport covers most places, is frequent, efficient, clean & safe.
Personally my pic for worlds most expensive city would be San Francisco by far. I love SFO but housing is ridiculously expensive for what you get and mind where you walk in some public areas because human excrement and drug paraphernalia can be stepped on or in.

@@jasontempest4233 Thanks for your reply. I wish to explain more about Singapore but it's best whoever that comes to Singapore, they will know it's not the MOST EXPENSIVE COUNTRY in the world. Takes too long to explain about it. So I will just leave it as it is.

You should have just take the MRT to Outram park station and go to Gurudwara in Outram line parks . They give free breakfast , lunch and snacks and dinner everyday. and its close to almost entire Singapore.

SG can actually be a pretty affordable place to visit if you limit your food to the hawker centers and use the public transport. Though, as a Singaporean myself, I'm pretty sure what puts us on the the top of the list is our living expenses. Average sized apartments are currently trading on the resale market for a million bucks and an average japanese car will cost you about 200 grand our groceries are also about double the price of european countries. So yeah, so long you're not LIVING here, it's pretty ok.

Good choice to head to Maxwell Food Centre and ordered Yangchow Friend Rice. It will be filling. You can chew gum but you cannot find them on sale. Locals shop online. The prices are more attractive. You can drink from the water fountain. They are clean.
