I've been playing this now for 18 months. It's not technically difficult, but it's so so hard to get that gentle touch without making it sound monotonous
I couldn't agree more! It frustrates me that some performers attempt to avoid monotony by rushing the piece, whereas bringing this kind of fragility to a performance draws out the piece's true emotion. Bravo Khatia
Agreed. Just got done playing it and then I watched her and I realized that if I could learn to do it with my eyes closed maybe, just maybe I could be in the same ballpark as she is. I can get a little into it then I have to peel and it kills the emotion!
Music is just some mystery. Valentina Lisitsa played Für Elise as an encore(you find it here on YT). The audience started to laugh then they stopped. I'd never heard it so beautifully played before though it's a very easy piece for those great pianists. Then I realized how hard even the most simple pieces can be!
People who are saying it's not "technically" difficult have a wrong and limited comprehension of what technical skill means and encompasses. The ability to play gently and with precise dynamics IS a form of technical skill. Stop claiming that this piece is not "technically" difficult to perform correctly. This piece requires tremendous technical skill.
@@user-je5io4jo7e I had to use google translate. I agree. I thought this performance was exquisite. I play this, but I sound like I'm using a chainsaw.
Miss Buniatishvili demonstrates that the left hand part is not so simple as it seems - the rush of obsessive, uneasy, dark emotion which threatens to erupt uncontrollably is what drives the piece.
I have a different interpretation. Her interpretation is not to my liking - for me, there is no rush of uneasy or dark emotion that drives it forward. I like to play it slower, with very different dynamics and accents, letting each chord in my left hand have its own identity. To move forward decisively, yet be at peace.
@@ashirogimuuto6257 I think lots of interpretations r equally valid. and enjoyable.. i as a complete beginner am learning this. it seems a difficult one to interpret. I hope that when I have learned it...which is months away I will discover my way ....
I would advise yo auto get the Henle Vertag version of the score (Urtext). I have just bought it and the fingering is at first a bit odd, but I think they have worked it out to make the left hand more adaptable to it than at first it seems - the numbering appears odd until you move on between chords.
This song starts and takes shape like a tear that starts to come out of the eye. It is one of the most honest compositions ever written and that I had the opportunity to hear. No matter how much time passes, this song will carry its lament for eternity. There are no words that can complement it.
I think the repeated chord patterns mark the inexorable march of time to the end, and the right hand sounds like sighs to me. I think this was played at Chopin's funeral, and (since I'm getting up in age), I've specified that it be played at mine too.
_“There are no words that can complement it.”_ Which, ironically, didn’t prevent you from speaking. Next time you’re thinking about making a TH-cam comment, remember this moment, and say nothing. Good lord. Who even talks like that? And who are you performing for?!?
And most concerts the loudness will drown out the coughing In any large group of people there's always a few people coughing it's just that this piece is so soft you could hear it
My favorite pianist ever... her interpretations keep always being the best interpretations worldwide... she made that piece look so simple, and yet it isn’t...
Beautiful. Short, because any stretch of time you spent with a lost loved one is short in retrospect. Repetitive to that final Em chord, because you want to reminisce constantly, you want to linger on those memories. Then you finally let go. This is a very expressive short story in music.
The syncopation she introduced in this performance between the melody and accompaniment makes all the difference in the world! Two eternal lovers that can meet for just a brief moment chase each other and intertwine like butterflies. Amazing!
I think you mean synchronization. Syncopation means playing an accented note in an unaccented beat, as in ragtime. This piece is not syncopated at all. The long notes in the melody all land on the first beat of each measure. She does, however, play with a lovely balance between the melody on top and the chords below. It sings above but does not overpower them. Even though there is only one long note on top playing against three on the bottom - being repeated three times no less - you can still feel that one long note. The effect is melancholy but not maudlin; the sound seems to just appear out of nowhere. It’s as if She’s not really playing it so much as just allowing it to happen.
Beautifully played by Khatia. It is reported in history that this was played at Chopin's funeral. I just saw it used as backing piano music tonight in the Olympic Ice Dancing competition of a couple. Chopin's Prelude added so much to the emotion of the ice dancing. I had to look online in TH-cam to find a live rendition of it to add to my post that I took off of the television screen with my cell phone camera and posted it to my Facebook, because it was soon to be blocked either by Olympics copyrights or the music.
There is another recording where she plays the dramatic middle part quite a bit faster. I must admit, I like and love this a lot more. I'd love to learn the piano and I guess it's never too late.
Runda Björn not at all......no.6 is a lot easier. The middle part of no.4 is absolutely not easy for the left hand. And to play it in a month or two means you are a prodigy....hahaha
nonsense - this is a simple (and so quite demanding to play well) grade five piece. From scratch you'd need a couple of years at least, unless you are exceptional. The coughers should be identified and banned from concert halls for a year.
A few bits in the middle are are hard. But I learned in a couple of months, self taught. Just finished learning Chopin prelude in a minor as well. Bach prelude C major - c minor next.
Tears in my eyes listening to this interpretation. This is such a difficult piece to get right, from an emotional perspective. Out of his vast repertoire of incredible pieces, Chopin requested that this be played (along with Mozart's Requiem) at his funeral.
Exquisite! When I play it, it sounds boring. When Khatia plays it she is talking to me deep into my heart and soul. The Lord has given her a wonderful gift, and she has worked hard to perfect it!
I am no music critic but my heart, soul and ear tell me that this is exactly how Chopin intended this unforgettable prelude to be played. It is supposed to grasp you entirely, becoming unforgettable, sharing its sadness with you. And I think, it does, it really does.

@@jozsefnemedi8472the audience always highers the bar. If the performance is lower that the bar, they are mocking/angry
Reminds me of the song "Macaroni Time" by Chief Keef.
Chopin himself requested that this prelude be played at his funeral. I can see why; this one full of sorrow.
Such a sad moving piece beautifully played
he requested that requiem of mozart be played.
It was indeed played at his funeral, along with a couple of his other compositions. But Chopin himself only requested Mozart's Requiem.
Maybe because he suffered from tuberculosis and this piece is also called suffocation.
Knew he was dying and you can feel the sadness.

Just like life.

Most sad piano piece 😢. Chopin truly tortures the audience by not dissolving the chord until the total end. A masterpiece of beauty❤
How beautifully worded by yourself.
You described what we all feel with perfection x💚
By the way Chopin himself wanted this piece to be played at his funeral. Truly one of his saddest pieces
"dissolving" the chord ?"
She has obviously listened to Horowitz recordings of this piece.
