Economic deprivation is indeed a cause to claim asylum. It's even recognized by the UN; however, standards to determine economic deprivation are inconsistent. Check out the decision in In Re T-Z, Respondent (2007).

What do they expect the city to do. It’s not reasonable to expect any city to have free shelter for hundred of thousands of people. Does any city in the world have anywhere near that?
"Asylum seekers", by law, are to seek refuge in the first country they set foot in that is considered safe. Passing through, in many cases, dozens of eligible countries to come to NYC, by definition, male you an economic migrant, not an asylum seeker, and disqualify your claim. I 100% support legitimate refugees, of which, maybe 5% of these people actually are.

I think men, here for economic reasons, should be further vetted and deported, for starters.
In reality however, many of the countries asylum seekers ‘pass through’ are not safe, are not signatories to international human rights laws, etc and do not have the resources to deal with large influxes of desperate people.
The US is literally the wealthiest country in the world, but much of its society caters to the wealthy. Imagine all of the tax dollars that could be collected if corporations paid their fair share?
As of now they've determined less than half of a percent qualify. It's like 4 or 5 people per 1,000. It's BS.

One former hotel worker did come forward - he was interviewed. Plus, kids were left alone in some of the rooms - not sure if they even belonged to the adults.
This is a windfall for NYC's slumlords and motel owners. Every room is now booked, and the taxpayers are paying $200 per day to house the people that New Yorkers invited to show up for sanctuary.
This will impact greatly against all those who voted democrats. You get what you vote for.

The court needs to QUICKLY clarify that Right to Shelter Rule so that it states what it was intended to state that - ONLY CURRENT, LEGAL New Yorkers in need of shelter must be housed.

So, NYC has received around 150,000 “Asylum Seekers” in the last 6 months and is struggling to deal with those numbers and it appears as though they’re continuing to come at that same rate.
So, here’s a question that I’ve asked many times and never gotten an answer to.
What is the limit? What happens when another 150,000 show up and then another 300,000 and then another 500,000 after that? What happens then?
What people need to understand is that the number of people living in poverty throughout the world number in the BILLIONS. There is no way the US can absorb even a small percentage of those numbers.
The reality is that one of two things are going to happen, either the US closes the border, or they will stop coming when the conditions in the US become so bad that it’s worse in the US then where they're coming from.

The word is out. Get to southern border and say asylum. You will get cash, food benefits, housing, plane and bus tickets, and medical and school. That's quite an incentive.
Being from a Latin American country (Uruguay), what I don't quite understand is why people keep going to the United States. It's not a country that is economically well off, and it must be one of the most challenging for immigrants. But if you go to a foreign country without papers and without money, you can't expect things to be handed to you for free. Especially in the United States, which is an absolutely individualistic country. But it's also not fair for the people in New York, or for those who are homeless as Americans, not having a place to stay because immigrants have occupied all the shelters. It's impossible for a city to handle such a wave of migration, and I can't wrap my head around why they keep going.
Legal obligation. Most of the world doesn't care for their own homeless citizens, but taking care of immigrants looks good politically. If we're talking fairness, it's not fair that we have people making millions every year while anyone sleeps in the streets or goes hungry, that some people are born with a diamond-encrusted golden spoon while others are born in utter poverty in war-torn regions, yet here we are...

Wow, when getting released from intensive care there were no beds at the women's shelter. That was twenty years ago in Phoenix.
My uncle waited like 15 years for a visa. He had to show proof at the consulate back in his country of where he would be living when he got here, and how he planned to provide for himself. That means the family had to provide all this information on his behalf. Then there's an even bigger wait for a green card and an even more expensive one to become a naturalized citizen if it gets to that down the road. Coming to this country, let alone NYC, is not a right. It's a privilege. The politicians knew what they were doing when they encouraged all these guys to flood the cities with nowhere to put them.
My father came here illegally, but earned everything on his own. Not relying on handouts especially the government lol.

Think how hard it has been for small towns in the south for the past 10+ years. They have much fewer resources and it takes a lot fewer people to overwhelm the small towns. The situation is terrible. The border needs to be secured. Thank you for making people aware of this issue in NYC. Keep all this in mind when you vote.
It is absurd to me that having a border is considered this ultra right wing ideology. EVERY country on earth does this! Some countries even REVOKE your citizenship when you fall below a certain income threshold. Who exactly are they seeking asylum from, because these migrants are from all over the world.

Local municipalities should be able to sue the federal government for destroying their city. People should petition against paying taxes since the govt cannot provide basic protections for them

I refuse to pay taxes. Taxes are used for demonic things like abortion, horrifying human/animal experiments, installation of socialism funding ungrateful, wasteful illegals, etc-The first ammendment secures our freedom of religion. My religion forbids the mur-der of pre- born babies, therefore I won't be paying taxes. Since when does uncle sam usurp out constitution? I would be more in fear of judgement day when God finds out people before him were complicit in the killing of the innocent and all the other demon things taxes contributed to. There will be no option for justifications,explaining or excuses on judgement day. Sounds to me like hell needs a serious expansion to hold the masses going there. We have choices. Poor native New Yorkers are struggling as it is and are being overlooked. Many don't have adequate housing that is clean with heat in the winter. Programs are being slashed for them as well.

You're right. They feel it would be fair if the people in Utah and Oklahoma paid more taxes to subsidize NYC's generosity. Every solution they have is "someone else should pay for our bad decisions." They never even consider not making so many bad decisions.

Most of people passed through border are workers, they came to USA for work. I know that cuz was speaking with many migrants on border. But cuz of Laws - they can't officially work anywhere before Judge and it's takes ages...

Here we are 1 hour from Mexico border where many of the migrants come from. Here it is 61 to 71 degrees F (6c to 21c). I am sure they are missing home here in Southwest where it is warm all winter. New York City is 4F daytime (-15c) and at night is below zero degrees! *WHY DID THEY LEAVE SOUTHWEST FOR THE ULTRA COLD NORTHEAST?* A MYSTERY TO ME!

Thank you for reporting on this. Honestly the rest of us are working 2 jobs minimum to stay afloat. We do not have the funds or capacity to be taking care of others especially not ones who are non US citizens. I'm a retired Veteran who's lucky that I am not homeless.

Boy I sure wish when I was homeless in NYC as a 6 year Veteran someone gave me free hotels, scooter, booze and weed instead of sleeping in my car due to an already crowded shelter system.
