While the citizens can't own most firearms, they are now being attacked by people carrying knives, swords, pipes, bats, axes, bricks and rocks. @DoubleplusUngoodthinkful the goal is to demoralise anyone who actually cares about doing the job well, so they quit. The erosion on all fronts is blatantly deliberate. Guiliani proved zero tolerance works & turned NY around. De Blasio did the absolute reverse. Neither of those strategies were accidental. A clear plan was instituted to bring about a specific outcome. The incremental increase in destructive policies ever since confirms that. So these policies clearly aren't insanity. They're carefully cultivated. What is the outcome for good citizens? Fear of crime. Fear of not having enough money for rent & food, between street robberies & prices in stores rising to cover thefts. They've deliberately created the conditions to make citizens worried sick. It's a blatant Hegelian Dialectic: create the problem that lets you impose a solution the people will only accept due to being driven to desperation. Something very nasty is around the corner.

I think it's important to note that we've seen this part of the playbook in NYC in the 70s, 80s and early 90s too. Developers would work with criminal gangs to intimidate neighbourhoods and push down property values so the developers could buy up the land/buildings for a fraction of their real value, then once they owned everything they wanted the crime would magically stop, property value would go back up and the area could be rapidly gentrified.
The city turned a blind eye to it (and in some cases participated) back then. Don't be surprised if they're doing that again now.

I loved growing up in Brooklyn and living in a 5 story apartment house on Cortelyou Road. My friends and I grew up in a huge, safe playground called Brooklyn. We roamed all over Brooklyn in complete safety as little 10 year old kids. What a great time and place to be born and grow up. I was born in the 50's and grew up in Brooklyn, in the Bay Ridge section until I left to get married in 1980. It was a wonderful place to be a kid. A close community where everyone knew each other and it was safe and clean! Not anymore...so sad to see 😫

Poverty doesn't drive crime. If that were true, poor places all over the world would have higher crime, and that's not the case. And I am aware you are saying sometimes.

@@perrywinkle5000 its when you get the gap between rich and poor which you see a lot in neo liberal economies. Im not saying this is right, but the people at the bottom look at all the cool stuff the wealthier people have and feel, "I want that" they dont have the means or the capability to get that stuff legally so they make the rational (if morally bankrupt) decision to choose the path of crime.
And another thing that exacerbates things even further is hard drugs and drug addiction they get desperate to feed.
