We BUILT A Wheel POWDERCOATING Oven For $125

  • Everyone has some wheels that need powdercoated, and powdercoating companies charge way too much. Quotes seem to be around $250 a wheel these days when material costs less than $100 for all 4. Josh was ready to do the wheels on his Trailblazer SS so he bought a double oven for $110 on craigslist. Then we spent the next few days converting the double oven into a giant single oven that can hold a 21" wheel. All in the oven only cost $125 and a handful of sheet metal screws. We borrowed an awesome powdercoating gun from a friend that wasn't using it. The wheels came out perfect and we're ready to do the next set!

How terrific an idea of creating the oven to bake the powdercoating. Put the major's out of business and do-it-yourself! I've seen the process before and it's relatively simple, but the outcome is fantastic. With your oven, do as much as you want to do. You will save on costs. Rims turned out looking better than new!!!! I'm in!

I have a 2006 TBSS - in fact the same SilverStone metallic color as that one in the video. Even though I live in Florida, the clear coat on the wheels gave up a few years ago and I stripped them with aircraft stripper - that stuff is amazing - it wasn't tedious at all. I wonder why they media blasted them in this video? Regardless, the ones in the video came out gorgeous.

Instead of a hook at the roof of the oven to hold the wheels, can you build an angle iron rail there? so you can pull the wheels out that are hanging on a hook that has a nut on it? (so the nut rides on the rails..) that should also lessen the stress on your back putting the wheels in and pulling them out.
