I literally do not understand the comments from people saying they’re surprised that the dark plates even work. Just because the original PlayStation plates was designed around negative pressure does not take away the physics of having more airflow come through the system to cool it off. I’ve had my Darkplates for about a week now and there is a drastic difference in cooling. I’ll play disc games and when I take my disk out to put it away the disc is much much cooler than it was using the old plates. Plus the air that comes out of the PlayStation is much cooler. I’m a Sony fan boy but even I can recognize that there is a flaw in the original plates. Negative pressure aside, the physics of having more airflow will always have better results. It’s common sense and I’m surprised by the lack of it by people‘s blind following to Sony‘s design philosophy…
Good point. I actually did this before my Darkplates came in. I used an external fan. The Darkplates come with a standard dust filter on each ventilation hole that you would find on any PC set up and they are easy to remove and clean so dust shouldn’t be an issue with standard cleaning. I would rather my PS5 run much cooler with slightly more dust exposure over 5 years than much hotter with minimal dust exposure. Look up gamer nexus thermal test on PS5. The PS5s memory temperature runs right at the max temperature threshold of 90 Celsius, while having to plates dropped that temperature by 5 Celsius across the system, which over hours/days/years of having would have a large impact because of how close the system was running right on the edge of its thermal envelope. 90 Celsius to 85 Celsius is much different than 80 Celsius to 75 Celsius. Just my two cents.
I can honestly say my disk has never been hot when I have removed it but it should be obvious adding more holes doesn't improve cooling. There is a reason they designed the console the way they did and I'm gonna trust the engineers who spent years testing and perfecting cooling over a cheap plate maker 😂
Thank you for making the dbrand Darkplate 2.0 temperature test vid. I have similar set up with black Darkplate 2.0 & Seagate Firecuda 530 2TB M.2 SSD with factory heatsink on my PS5. I bought one of the Sabrent heatsinks that replaces that metal cover, I'm not sure if it works well but I haven't had any issues (also using it with a sabrent drive). I like how it looks, got it for $16.99 Canadian, normally they are $25. love this review. i ended up not getting the dbrand plates due to $$$$ for cooling value and just opted for black bubble vented plates that allow my ps5 rgb ring lights on the fans shine through. thank you for the review!!!
A bit late to the party. But i think an overlooked thing on the PS5 is those metal grills over each side of the fan. Which i assume are mainly there for protection, and perhaps catching large clumps of dust. But at the same time, i thiink it obscures a percentage of the fan itself, and is another obstacle for air to travel through. I removed mine completely and screwed the fan back in without them, along with the dbrand case with filters on. It's probably a minimal thing in reality, but I find it opens up the fan a bit more to airflow. As long as the console is in a safe spot and is cleaned regularly, it wouldn't hurt, right?
Bought the Darkplates, added a screen to the curved intake/center section and even added a micron mesh to the Darkplates to reduce dust intake. I also plan on removing the fan cover grates since they are simply useless unless you plan on travelling. The Darkplates actually DO assist in active airflow and reduce the internal temps by 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Gamers Nexus numbers with/without PS cover plates temps would be more accurate since they placed thermocouples on the actual memory and processors and you are taking a temperature of a piece of plastic that maintains the same constant temperature. I even ran a FLIR camera on my system after 2 hours of playing Horizon Forbidden West in resolution (4K) mode and the exhaust temperature was 50 degrees Fahrenheit lower than with my old PS5 plates. Plus you can see on your PS plates side that the graphics activity is much less drastic than the Darkplates video. you were really trying to get that processor to work on the Darkplate side.
Thanks for the super informative comparisons. I watched all 3 parts of this video. However, I do wish that you had a video showing temperature difference between the original Sony’s PS5 Plate vs Dbrand’s PS5 Darkplate 2.0 with Sabrent M.2 NVMe Heatsink installed with Rocket 4 Plus or any other SSD installed along with Sabrent Heatsink. So basically it would be interesting to see how much cooler temperatures can be achieved on Darkplate 2.0 with SSD + Sabrent Heatsink installed compared to the original PS5 plate.
I'm confused. At 13:30 your charts show that temperatures fell way down between games using the Darkplates, whereas it stayed almost the same with the regular PS5 plates. I have to say that I have just picked up these plates with the light strips (green) and central cover. Its more for aesthetics really as I'm not a fan of the 'collar' on the original plates, but hey it is down to each individual I suppose. Interesting. Here’s a slightly different take: The DBrand plate has increased air intake. With this being the case, how do these measure up over time whereas dust builds up internally creating a heat blanket. It seems to me that using the DBrand covers will result in the need to clean the internals more frequently. Also of note is that the opening on the DBrand covers didn’t appear to have any sort of mesh to help capture dust particles from entering internally.
the darkplate have an easily removable mesh grills. Cleaning will be much easier. all through if your taking nthe plates off you might as well take the fan out of the console and give that a clean too
@@DragoVids, thanks, I didn’t see them. Edit: I watched a video from Linus Tech Tips after your comment and this initial reply where he was installing the plates and in the video the mesh plate dislodged from the plates.
I'm curious what the temperature inside the console is like. You measure the SSD that isn't really affected by the plates and still saw a slight improvement, but it doesn't tell us anything about the temperatures of the CPU and GPU which is what the plates are supposed to effect to bigger effect.
I found a vented SSD cover for my corsair 2TB and will be using the original external plate covers till i either see a price drop or more significant temp drops before i spend 60-80 dollars on a vented external plate.
I personally am loving my Dbrand dark plates but I’m not loving the vents. And reason being I noticed there’s not as much heat coming out the back like normally it would. Which leads me to believe its not cooling the internals as it should normally. I’m thinking of taping up the inside where the vents are or putting back on the ps plates.
I think something that's not being mentioned (by dbrand) is that maybe the materials are different (the composition of the plastics used) from those used by SONY, and that this has something to do with heat dissipation. Maybe the dbrand plates insulate better for some small reason, and that's going to matter in the overall life of the console.
Thank you for this. Glad to see it's a $50-$60 waste of money that can go to a game, or an extra controller... unless, of course, one buys it simply for the aesthetics.
Not only that, due to the fan holes on the side it’s gonna be a major dust magnet and all you get is some slightly better cooling. With these plates on you will have to clean it a lot more regularly than with the original plates. What i think is that Sony thought of this and thus sacrificed a bit of cooling for a longer lifespan of the console
@@spillinout although you would think that having the sole intake on the top of the console would allow for more dust to get inside, as dust typically falls downward, rather than moving sideways. so the intake vents seem like they'd benefit more from being on the sides rather than the top. but maybe I'm missing something, idk.

I think that a multimillion dollar company that spent years of research, testing and designing the system with top engineers experts on the field particularly working on the ps5 should know better why it is the way it is.
I don’t understand these temperature tests, doesn’t higher temp mean the console is dissipating more heat? So the cpu will be cooler then the console dissipating less heat?
PlayStation 5 is an extremely Awesome Machine but I do have one little caveat which is how hot the back USB ports get as I’m not sure what Sony was thinking but I had my cable plugged in for just a few hours and the piece which plugs in is uncomfortably hot in My opinion !
Air only need to pass over the SSD/NVMe because it's not internal. Other than that, it doesn't need to go around the console. It's pointless. It only needs to go into the console to cool the internal components which the fans accomplish. The darkplates in theory will allow this to happen with less restriction while including a filter for dust.
I was wondering if or how much of the internal temperature difference would be without the fan guards. Air moving threw them will become turbulent and slow down. In theory.
Nice video! Love those plates but I barely pulled the trigger on my $120 Atom50 1tb ssd. Running it with just the stock heat spreader and no cover. Pretty happy with not having to bounce PS5 games between internal and external.
The PlayStation 5 actual plates are designed for optimum airflow in order to ensure the console remains cool at at anytime, adding vents would compromise that
@@bamban_garcia5562 actually there’s a video on TH-cam where they tested the original plates vs the the new aftermarket design with the fan vents and the new design kept the PS5 cooler.

This idea might not work But it could. Buying small fans Attach them to the heat sink of the PlayStation 5 blowing in the right direction Could that work. If wired correctly and not mess up air flow. Will it make the system cooler.
I saw another TH-camr saying exactly this "You should reconsider the Dbrand case. That can fan hole actually short circuits the cooling loop and creates hotspots on your system. " ANYONE CAN COMMENT ON THIS???
The only hot spots I can imagine would be between the PS5 plates and the black PS5 shell that encases all the internals....which is also where he has the probe reading ambient temperatures. The PS5 cooling fan will still operate as normal, cooling the internal components unaffected by whichever PS5 plates you run, with one exception he pointed out in a video.....dissipation of heat from the SSD without SSD cover will be drawn into the fan. SSD's don't really get that hot to begin with, so it doesn't really matter. What matters more is keeping your SSD cooler, and having ample airflow to the internal components to keep them cool as well, which both sets of plates allow. Airflow to the cooling fan will be less restricted with the darkplates though and in theory should allow for better airflow through the internal components. He's not measuring the internals though, just SSD controller and ambient. I ordered the darkplates, but decided to have my Sony plates laser cut. I'm also going with a vented SSD cover, plus a couple extra mods.

I so tempted to drill holes in that ssd cover plate, even with the built in heatsink on the nvme
GRAUGEAR Metal Heat Dissipation Cover. Looks good too
where'd you get the little PS sticker for the middle portion of the console?
Nas, can you use the original PS5 stand plate for those covers?
can you add a fan filter to that then add an usb fan to cool everything quickly
PlayStation 5 is an extremely Awesome Machine but I do have one little caveat which is how hot the back USB ports get as I’m not sure what Sony was thinking but I had my cable plugged in for just a few hours and the piece which plugs in is uncomfortably hot in My opinion !
The vents just stop air going around the console properly. Don't seem like a good idea
the video showed the problem was inefficient heat exhaustion with stock.
So the plastic holds more heat?
Because the exhaust does not change due to changing the plates .
Dremel tool and add your own vents?
Where did you get the ps logo
I was wondering if or how much of the internal temperature difference would be without the fan guards. Air moving threw them will become turbulent and slow down. In theory.
Got ya self a new sub bro
Thank you for making the video!
Nice video! Love those plates but I barely pulled the trigger on my $120 Atom50 1tb ssd. Running it with just the stock heat spreader and no cover. Pretty happy with not having to bounce PS5 games between internal and external.
Sony now sells plates on there PS website they should design a new set of plates with the vents for the fan and a better stand.
@@futurespast5150 Good to know hopefully I can.get one any year now though honestly wish the design could be chosen heck I'l pay some more for the dev kit style
Hmm just a quick question what if u left the original plate on the disk side and the other vented would it be cooler ? So mix n match
So basically it's such a miniscule difference you should really only make a purchase if you like the asthetic of the plates over the original
This idea might not work But it could. Buying small fans Attach them to the heat sink of the PlayStation 5 blowing in the right direction Could that work. If wired correctly and not mess up air flow. Will it make the system cooler.
Love these PS5 videos. Thank you for making them.
How/Where did you get the classic Playstation logo on the center strip near the power and eject buttons?
Flaming Toast!
@@jamess.3013 It looks like Flamingtoast just has stickers to put under the original face plates. I'm talking about the tiny Playstaion logo on the black center strip of the console
@@GabrielJosephAhYea it’s the “button mashers” that they have. The PS logo that he’s got there is actually meant to go on the PS button on the dualsense. Trust me, I have them myself haha
@@jamess.3013 Oh awesome! I'll check em out!
Venturi Effect. Sony knows it. DBrand didn't understand it
stupid question but did you make sure to NOT test with the ps5 standing vertically without the factory stand? i've been reading a ton of blogs saying that running the ps5 vertically-flat (like in your non-running commmentary) inhibited air intake flow from the bottom vents.... again i'm sure you ran it horizontal but just wondering. thank you!!!!
Nah, what would sony know. Lol
Why would you no place the heat sensor where it exhausts? Putting it under the fan really doesn't represent the actual temperature difference.
Very good test Brilliant!!!
How did you install the PS3 logo in your PS5??? I want to do this, but i don't know how do that.
Good to know that these plates don't negatively affect the functioning of the console.
It's a pity they don't have (more) color choices.
My nigga you're doing Gods work ty. Cant wait for my DP 2.0s I'm in February wave so by the end of this month I should have mine in. Anybody wanna buy the OG DP 1.0 plates hmu
Never felt more G than when I read your comment. Cheers
@@nascompares lol. Hope you're having a great weekend. Much love and light my brother
Since they’re intake fans, won’t they just build up dust much more quickly?
@@anthonymercado8126 Thanks for the info. That’s unfortunate though. They’re marketing a product that does the opposite of what they claim.
Great video, but you need to choose less-creepy testing music, next time.
is that ps logo on the ps5 just a small sticker? if so where can I also get one
I wanna know this too
@@TheTurboLag hopefully one day theyll see our message lol
Bro its just a sticker
Tbh everything about having airflow is good like for example if it has airflow then you get dust but also performance but no airflow means no dust but less performance
Where did you get your little PS logo on the black section ? Thanks in advance
Amazon. Just search for ps5 controller logo stickers
@@deLAchrys9 thank you
Don’t wanna try that but vertical vs horizontal console placing ?
Thanks for this!
So no custom heatsink cover fit over that firceuda version?
How you put the Playstation logo in the middle and where I can buy one ?
PS5 is difficult to hack cool. None of these things, the plates or the fans, do much. Great review.
What ab the dust filters there selling on amazon?
What will happen if you use a external ventilator? The one you use in a livingroom for example. Just target the ventilator on the PS5.
What’s the best/fastest ssd possible for the ps5
Seagate Firecuda 530 with heatsink
Samsung 980 Pro 2TB.. plenty of videos out there with actual live testing on PS5s. Including the firecuda, which on paper looks faster. It's not... with that being said we're talking, in most cases, a second or less.
You should test the newer model with the smaller heatsink
please I'm wondering where did you get the ps logo on the faceplate of the ps5 like that??
Cheers for watching. Just put together a guide on it. Fairly low cost and I am adding this to the end of a video coming soon - nascompares.com/custom-ps2-design-build-for-the-playstation-5/
What i am curiuos about is dust, the PS5 original covers channel dust to certain areas to be vacuumed out. will the dark plates put dust in bad places or have the system get dirtier faster
The dark plates have dust filters where the vents are. They are removable , you don’t need to keep them on, which will allow more airflow, but also more dust.
Are they making them for ps5 digital yet ?
Does it knock out all the dust off inside the system?
I want that little logo Ps5's decal.... *.*
@NASCompares I’ve not been able to locate the temp tests without SSD cover plate (and original PS5 covers). Will you send the link, mate? I’ve got the Firecuda with heat sink and am wondering if I should remove that pesky cover plate
It should be published in just under a week. No worries man
But, in short, I would remove the plate. Had an overwhelming number of tests over 6 months indicate as much
Can find video did he post it ?
@@neonghost8608 I haven’t noticed but his reply was sufficient for me lol 🤷♂️
GRAUGEAR Metal Heat Dissipation Cover looks like a promising concept
7nm vs 6nm ?
Have they included dust filters???
For the money better get an Elecgear heatsink.
There is removable dust filter on either side of the Darkplate 2.0 for cleaning need.
@GrumpyDad , spoiler alert for part 3 in this series, but yeah.. I'd definitely buy a better heatsink over these plates...
SABRENT M.2 NVMe Heatsink is a great heatsink
@@eaglesfan7636
But the Elecgear heatsink is greater. So what's your point.
@@OlderRockRocks does the elecgear one fit above the firecuda he used? Trying to find out before buying.
