Super helpful. As a novice I've come a long way when it comes to actually catching fish, but now I'm working on streamlining my process of changing lures/bait so I can spend less time tying knots on the water and more time actually fishing. Thanks for the insight!
If you're fishing for bass a snap swivel is just fine. They keep the line from twisting and you can switch out bait very quickly. The bass really don't care about the hardware up front they just seem to change day to day on what they want to hit. So the ability to change out lures quickly and find what they're hitting on is key.

I tie the jigs and swim baits directly. Using a clip instead of a full snap swivel on cranks, spoons, and rooster tails is a good idea, and using a split ring on some of the swim baits or top water spinners, but not for frogs. Nice video.
Great video my friend, love to watch your content. Its always nice to get a refresher when in comes to using what and how to tie on your lure. Have a great trip fishing on the next adventure.
When I was young I used a snap swivel, always. As I got more experience I dropped the snap swivel completely I catch way more fish without the snap swivel almost 10 times as many fish especially in more clear water.
One good scenario where I use a snap swivel is when I'm using lures for northern pike because the short metal piece on the snap swivel acts sort of like a short metal wire leader for the line. and so it reduces the amount of bite offs you get if you choose to go with 30 lb test or any other lighter lb test by northern pike standards. because the swivel part of the snap swivel will replace the part of the line that they would have bitten if the snap swivel wasn't there to begin with.
Thanks for the information. I just started fishing and have been learning by the trial and error method😅 But I’ve learned a lot in the past 3 times I’ve gone fishing. After watching this, I can point out a few things that might have been preventing me from getting any bites at all! Thanks!
What is your favorite know to tie braid to swivel, mono to swivel, and mono to hook? I searched your library and thought for sure there would be a video on knots. Maybe a suggestion for another video. I'd love to get your practical advice on the technique for tying said knots as well
A snell knot variation or palomar knot is usually what I use for line to hook, easy and better than a double uni or other common knots. Idk about line to swivel tho bc I havent really used them
Always used a snap on all my lures for past 60 years...even topwater action lures....Never had and problem or missed fish. I find it a bit easy changing lures. I guess I can say I do it in a snap!
I used to use snap swivels on everything but found that with crankbaits the swivel would occasionally get caught on the first treble when the lure hit the water after a cast. Also I fish ned rigs for bass a lot and they look way more natural when tied direct.
Avoid snap swivels all together by putting swivels on the split rings of your lures. Minimal hardware, and you can tie direct so there’s no fear of bending it out. I do this on all my salmon spoons and so far 24lb lake trout haven’t been able to break em. They’ll bend out the hooks before they break it if your using a good split ring and swivel
Was going to say this. Trout that will hit on spinners and spoons in clear water can be finicky near me, so I will often tie a barrel swivel at the end of a fluorocarbon leader and tie directly to the spoon without a ring. It seems to help.
Unfortunately where I live, 4, 6 and 12 inch coated steel leaders with swivel and snap clip are mandatory for the Pike and Walleye up here in Saskatchewan. They’ll nom-nom clean through your lines. Never had line twist issues either. I can’t imagine always cutting and re-tying my fishing line. 😳 I’m often switching lures too frequently for that nonsense...
Good stuff! Informative...1 quick question though ...when using a mono or floro leader, why not just tie line to line with a double uni or whatever knot? Thats less metal, and you can reel in farther. The metal on a swivel can't reel through the top eye of the rod. It could make it harder to fight a fish all the way
Yes, a lot of fishermen do it that way. My leader isn't very long, so when I reel up to the swivel it doesn't make casting difficult. I prefer this to having a longer leader with a knot. Even a small knot doesn't glide thru the guides perfectly. But if you feel a need for longer leaders the knot is the way to go, KPO.
@@Straight0uttaCrofton it doesn't. truth be told, you don't actually need a swivel, either. I run braid direct to a flouro leader on all my spinning rods and have not once used a swivel, even with inline spinners. It's good advice for the guys throwing mono or flouro, to be sure. Line twist is a huge problem with vinyl lines, but not hardly at all with braid.
Can you use the Palomar knot to tie a swivel to the line then use the Palomar knot again to tie a leader to the swivel ? Most videos mention using a uni knot (or other knots) to tie a leader on but I can only tie the palomar with confidence.
I used to use snap swivels but over time just had too many pike bite-offs. So now I use a small micro or fluorocarbon leader on my lightest casting rig.
I always use a leader line tied to my spoons and jigs. I put a loop at the end and use a barrel snap swivel tide to my main line. No line twists. Also i use spinning reels only.
Cool! I was actually born there but moved to Upper Michigan at a young age. Still visit once in a while and have an uncle that still has a summer house on the Wisconsin River/Boom lake area. Actually fished there a lot as a kid.

I have used a swivel/clip when fishing inshore my literal whole life. Every lure I have ever used is hooked up to a swivel with a clip on it. Have never had an issue or noticed. Fosh don't seem to care either. Ultra light up to 10 pounders. Have caught every single freshwater fish with a swivel clip. Makes changing lures super fast and easy.
Yes, it's an interesting subject. I've had tournament fisherman commented here how clips alter the sink/dive rate of lures, and they consider that a negative. Then I was just reading a recent issue of In-Fisherman and they were taking about using different size clips and even changing hook size to tweak the sink/dive rates of lures. Some comment here say you're missing on fish if you use a clip on crankbaits, but every time I see a video of Jon Thelen (of Lindy Fishing Tackle) using cranks he has a clip on his line. I pretty much do as I mentioned in the video. There certainly seems to be a lot of really good fisherman (fisherman that pay their mortgage by catching fish - tournaments, guides, seminar speakers, TH-cam teachers, pro-staffers) that do the same. But some really good fisherman do not. Thanks for the input.
Thank you! I'm 36 and never used these, always tied straight to the bait/lure. Now I'm rigging like I should have been and can't believe how I fished without them
How about your spinner or lure on one end of your leader and a duo-snap on other end of your leader which snaps onto a ball bearing swivel attached to the main line? Wouldn't that prevent leader and main line from twisting?
Now I need to learn when to tie a loop knot versus a slip knot. That chatterbait type lure at 4:45 you had tied that close slip knot. I wonder if you would want a loop knot for that type of lure or not. I have no idea.
I seldom use a loop knot. But I think the idea is if you want a lure to be able to move more freely without having the line impede the movement, then a loop knot is better. The lure can wiggle side to side or up and down within the loop. But other times guys like having the direct control over the movement of the lure and they tire directly with slip knot. KPO
When fishing for pike traditionally we've used metal wire leader to avoid them biting the line, however with the new braided line, that is completely unnecessary, all you need is a good snap swivel.
WOW i just got into fishing, been getting nice catches but when im changing lures i just keep cutting line and retying over and over, never knew about these
If you going fish with spoons or inline spinners all day just tie a snap swivel on that can handle the weight of the fish your targeting. I use small black snap swivels unless Im fishing for trout. If I fish for trout with inline spinners I run braid mainline to a bumper of flourocarbon to a small black barrel swivel and another 1 to 2' leader off that and tie my spinner.
I usually direct tie everything but I use braided line that doesnt seem to twist badly with no leader. I'll use a snap swivel between my braid and leader for bottom fishing. The swivel will act as a stop for a slip sinker.
Have lost some nice fish from snap swivel failures!! I tie a barrel swivel on to prevent line twist then 15 to 18 inches of leader to that then tie directly to my lure..Never had a problem and no line twist!! Gotta change lures just nip the knot and retie !!!

When you tie a swivel 12 inches up are you usjng another snap yo connect thr leader or a loop knot?
Main line, swivel, 12 inch fluoro leader and then a snap.
Thank you! I'm 36 and never used these, always tied straight to the bait/lure. Now I'm rigging like I should have been and can't believe how I fished without them
Great to hear it.
Hi great video I don't fish in fresh water but I do understand what you mean iam a saltwater fisherman for many years thanks
You bet!
How about your spinner or lure on one end of your leader and a duo-snap on other end of your leader which snaps onto a ball bearing swivel attached to the main line? Wouldn't that prevent leader and main line from twisting?
Well I suppose the more swivels the less twists.
Nice was hard to find a video like this start to the learning not vloging like the gurus
Glad it was helpful! Also check this out th-cam.com/play/PLksX0m4wrQHxT07vfN23yMYzyR4lXz9-v.html
KPO
Helpful to all, even just as a refresher. TFS
Glad it was helpful!
When fishing for pike traditionally we've used metal wire leader to avoid them biting the line, however with the new braided line, that is completely unnecessary, all you need is a good snap swivel.
yes
WOW i just got into fishing, been getting nice catches but when im changing lures i just keep cutting line and retying over and over, never knew about these
This is going to make your world much easier!
I have debated using a small swivel on my tubes since the way it falls seems to badly twist the line. I'll have to try it.
Yes, I like the swivel 12 inches up the line with fluoro leader, then tie fluoro direct with something like tubes.
I usually direct tie everything but I use braided line that doesnt seem to twist badly with no leader. I'll use a snap swivel between my braid and leader for bottom fishing. The swivel will act as a stop for a slip sinker.
Good stuff
Excellent instructional video. TY
Thank you so much!
Have lost some nice fish from snap swivel failures!! I tie a barrel swivel on to prevent line twist then 15 to 18 inches of leader to that then tie directly to my lure..Never had a problem and no line twist!! Gotta change lures just nip the knot and retie !!!
That will work no doubt. Snaps and clips can fail. I've found quality ones are often better.
thanks for the great video! really helped a lot
welcome
Good information. I run mine pretty much the same way you explain.
Thanks and cool!
