    For us northern folk, we call it "running a stinger" when jigging walleyes. Keep the main hook and run a size 8-10 treble on a pre tied piece of braid aka "stinger hook" and it'll change your life. When we Jigs we let the hook free swing but when we're casting we'll one hook it back into the body. Works well for threaded on live bait as well. 👊

    Great tip! If I may add too, rig your swim jig as normal. Tie a Palomar knot to the jig head leaving the existing hook on, tie your treble hook to the tag end of the Palomar knot and insert treble hook accordingly. 😊👍🏻

      I was wondering why you wouldn't leave the hook on the jig head? Seems like a person would have 4 hooks rather than 3. Plus you've added a short knot to lure and seems risky to gamble on this?

    We use this rig all the time when fishing for pikes. Due to the bigger swimbaits we leave the jig head intact and just add the stinger. Instead of clipping the hook of the Okashira jig head you could also use screw in heads (e.g. Gunki g'fish screw from 3/16 all the way up to 1oz)

    I usually use this rig when fishing for pike. You can also prep varying lengths in advance with loops at the end. Instead of attaching it directly to the jig-head, you can simply hang it in the snap with your jig-head. Also I leave the jig's hook intact. This way I can use shorter jigs to allow for more play in my baits while also reducing dead strikes due to the stinger which is changeable and the rig stays adjustable when I change my bait's size. When fishing for pike I use a wire leader. A good way to circumvent the use of jig-heads for shallow fishing is to use screws and 1-2 stingers depending on the size of the lure. Some screws come with adjustable weights but you can also use pear shaped weights to hang in the snap to adjust to the situation.

      Baits add up, and there's too many used plastic baits in our lakes as well. Most plastic baits sink now adays from all the impregnated salt. Here in our lakes, so many bass have bellys full of soft plastic baits. To the point the many can't feed properly.

  • @harveyschindler9554
    @harveyschindler9554 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    We’ve been doing something similar, found with speckled trout, we have to use larger test line. They are toothy and treble hooks tend to snag deeper into the throat of trout with the line going across their teeth. I tried using like a trailer hook around shank of jig hook with mixed results. It tends to stiffen the action of plastic.

    • @davidharris9077

      Same here for Speckled Trout. I used a trailer hook for a while, but found that I was catching a lot of small trout that couldn't reach the jig head hook , the reason for the short strike,, so I went back to only using the jig head without a trailer hook.

    Basically it's a stinger hook without the main hook. I'm from europe and i'm using stingers for years on decent sized rubbers, but i'm not removing the main hook, i see no reason to do that when fishing for pike or zander. And if i am fishing without a main single hook and use only trebles instead i'm always using either screw-in heads or shallow screws plus a cheburashka weight. A clipped jighead will very easily loose the swimbait so you need to put some superglue on to hold the bait.

    here in europe that rig is standard for preetator fishing like pike. the trebble hook is called a stinger and for pike we use a wire . we leave the hook on . just make a loop at the end and put it over the eye. no need to tie a knot. Its hold in place by a snap which is connected to the mainline or additional wire or whatever you use. so you can exchange both the bait or and the stinger really quick .

    Is this really uncommon in the US? We do this often in Europe, some brands have jigheads with an extra eye to attach your stinger. You can also make a free rig where the treble dislodges from the bait completely and the line can run freely so the fish can't throw the bait as easily, which works particularly well with large swimbaits.

    QUESTION: Randy, given the correct under-spin head with a line tie directly under the head, would you consider doing the same setup but only under the belly like a MagDraft? Do you believe having the hook on top is superior?

    • @phillipmonk2855
      @phillipmonk2855 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i think you get a better hook up ratio like this bc once the fish hit it then there’s two hooks in the roof of its mouth.

    • @americanagothic7851
      @americanagothic7851 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was putting the treble on the bottom and left the swim head hook. It’s not weedless when I like to fish this type of lure over weeds or right next to weed lines sometimes hitting the grass with the bottom of the lure generates strikes just like a lipless. Cutting the swim head hook and putting the treble on the top allows you to fish the grass and weeds. The treble on the bottom takes that advantage away.

    • @MikeYurbasovich
      @MikeYurbasovich 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@americanagothic7851 I also fish weeds and rocks, probably this baits' strongest advantage, and I've been looking to get these slacker fish that nip the tail.
      I think for me and the pike I fish, I'll keep that main hook and use wire to a smaller treble with the 3rd hook clipped off the bottom.

  • @ultralightfishingguy
    @ultralightfishingguy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've never seen this in bass fishing but it makes perfect sense. There are a lot of non-redundant fail points at the same time though worth mentioning. The knots would need to be 110% perfect 3 times on same rig, that's the only thing I'd be concerned about and once hooked you don't exactly have a direct line feel right to the fish if that makes sense.

    Hey Randy the best way I found use a rivet the hollow little metal Piece insert in swim bait then thread your line through tie treble straight to line works great try it you might like it

  • @jimb1283

    Coudn't you just tie the treble to the original hook and not destroy a jig head?

      ive been doing this same thing with spinnerbaits i find on the river where the hook is rusted past sharpening i just clip it straight polish the blades and tie on a baitholder wire and rig it up with a swim bait and treble

    • @LarryAnnen
      @LarryAnnen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      From Randy’s description; rigging it this way allows the hook to depart the bait which helps to prevent the fish from throwing the bait. Makes sense to me. I’ve got to try it this way.

    Yea but how many swim baits do you go thru using the jig head and just. Driving into the swim baits plus if it comes off there goes your swim bait on the 1st fish. And still in good use.

    Because of the slack in the treble tie, why couldn’t you leave the original hook on the jig head?

    • @ICYPROFITS
      @ICYPROFITS 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because its rigged out of the top. You would have to rig the jig head upside down to do what your talking about. And that would defeat the purpose because its to reduce the fishes leverage

    • @derickstufflebeam1624
      @derickstufflebeam1624 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@ICYPROFITS The benefit of this rig is for short strikes, correct? So doing this with the original jig head hook intact, would be the same as a trailer hook on a spinnerbait. So the basic question I was asking is, why cut the original hook off? What’s the benefit to having just the treble hook?

    • @ICYPROFITS
      @ICYPROFITS 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@derickstufflebeam1624 like he said in the video because it gives the fish more leverage to come off if you are just using the jig head. The same way pegging your weight does when flipping. With the free floating treble you increase your hook up because its not in a position to turn and blow out of the fishes mouth. Think of it almost as a snell knot and the hook movement versus a regular knot. That free hook movement is what you are after. The same reason treble hooks aren't soldered onto a crankbait. Also you dont want to effect the action of the bait or the look.

      I bet those jig heads come flying out the swim bait often... with the original hook and a quick strike treble to the back you have more surface area to hook up

  • @GillmanStudio
    @GillmanStudio ปีที่แล้ว

    Could you run your main line (or fine wire) straight through the eye of the jig head and hold the 'hook' length in place with line stops? this then becomes adjustable and also you have less knots as weak points.

  • @goga56
    @goga56 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Won’t you loose more swimbaits this way? What’s keeping the swimbait on if the hook separates from the body.

  • @rockhull4417
    @rockhull4417 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    So why not just us the jig with hook and then back it up with the treble stinger?? It just seems like your going to keep losing your swim bait body each fish you catch or time you cast..

    I'm here because I've missed like 3 big fish this week cause they either spit my hook out or they body slammed my swimbait to "stun" it and I didn't get a hook up when I was LITERALLY in contact with the sucker. I bought some deep diving crankbaits with two trebles, but this is a much more economical solution to my problem. Real pro tip here for sure.
