I’ve been fishing for 70 years, and this youngster hit all the bases and nailed it.This is what I do,all the way down to the knot’s.I wish I could get those exact baits here in the US tho.Great advice Nev.
Been watching different tutorials. Your tutorial is SO good. Thank you! It’s nice to find a comment section that’s positive too. I’m new to fishing and I’m realizing how judgmental the community can be. Thanks, lad!
I've been a lifelong live bait fisho. I've been trying and persisting with soft plastics for a few weeks now, I've caught one big tommy ruff for now but I'm still working on the technique. This video helps, thanks Nev!
Love thank you. I’ve been fishing for years. Never had much luck. 🍀. But nobody taught me. It took me 3 yrs too catch my first fish. I kinda don’t mind not catching, cos it’s just so peas-full. But I need too start having a wee bit more success. Maggots are hard too come buy, so I was watching another TH-camr, throwing plastic baits. I was interested.. so thank you and I’ll keep watching, for your tips and explanations. Thank You love. ❤️ 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🙏❤️
This makes me feel so much better about my first proper attempt today, a lot of ground covered over 3 and half hours and only 1 real nibble from something far to small to take my lil 2.5 curly tail. Changed up to a paddle tale on the way back down river but still no joy. I'll try the other bank next time, or maybe further up river
I’m late to the party, but this is such good content mate. I’m super keen on getting into Kayak fishing after watching your videos, would love a similar video on that!
Mate thanks, I haven’t fished in years and now I have a couple of kids I want to teach them some things I did as a kid and fishing is top of my list. Never used soft plastics and you made it easy to understand cheers
Thank you for the tips on joining the fc to the braid, guess I won’t know if it’s done right until I hook a fish but I can’t pull it apart so pretty confident, appreciate your knowledge mate, TIGHT LINES
Also - as a alternative to double uni. The Alberto or _'Crazy Alberto'_ is a great knot. I use this knot for 8-15lb braid to 8lb fluoro and providing you can synch it down super tight, It will *NEVER* slip. I use an old AA or AAA battery to pull the knot down tight. A few wraps of braid around the battery and give it a proper good pull. Once the knot is done and the tag ends clipped, its quite small as well and I have no problem getting it through the guides. This is with light braid and fluro mind you. The knot will obviously be a lot bigger with heavier lines due to the diameters but there is no reason why the knot shouldnt work for heavier setups. Just dont expect to crank the knot through the rod guides. Also. The Palomar or Double Palomar is a good knot for tying hooks and swivels. Super simple, Super strong and takes less than 5 seconds to tie
Where I fish, 4kg braid would get busted up real bad. I fish with soft plastics using the same set up as I use for squid. Slightly heavier outfit but a bit more versatile.
Was taught to think of the retrieval as the town crier. Work the jig like the bell to get the attention, then stop so the people (fish) will grab onto what you are saying.
The best tip i have is look up what your target eats and then learn everything you can about that food source. If it eats minnows learn everything about minnows. You can make your own lures that mimic whatever you need. Our ancestors invented fishing with wood and rope so its not as hard as we have made it.
Can you PLEASE do a beginner's guide to beach fishing! We LOVE your videos and am going beach fishing for the first time at Moreton @ the end of the year. HELP PLS
@@nevsguidetofishing it helps in understanding that it's not an immediate success. I caught my first Flatty (40cm) on Kangaroo Island. But it was a grind otherwise.
Cool vid again mate . I join lines with a little barrel swivel ( just lazy or out of habit I guess! Think it’s us older fellas that never had braid back in the day learned to just use swivels and blood knots interested what your opinion Why a line to line with a uni is a better option ?
Harder to see knot vs. swivel? I keep my leader short(1m), but some people like it longer (5-25m) and will throw the knot thru guides, which is impossible with a swivel
Using a 1 metre long leader, it has to be able to be wound through the guides. I'm an old fella and use wind on leaders on all my rods now, the only time I use a swivel is a 3 way one with a dropper for my bottom rigs. Tied onto the end of my wind on leader ;) I've recently switched from the double uni knot to the Albright knot, much neater knot. FG knot is better but I suck at tying it lol
i fish from a canoe, i put it just off the reeds on the edge of little islands in the lake and i am getting a bit frustrated with yhe behavior of the perch. Il be fishing my plastic like this and feel little tugs all the way. Then when i bring the lure to the surface il have massive perch follow it to the surface and break off pursuit. I tried pausing on my retrieval, they still break off pursuit. Why wont they take the bait but just tug the tail and follow it
Hey Nev, been loving your videos, this one is the best I could find on beginners soft plastics. A question for you (or anyone else who knows), do you back your braid with something like mono, or use a tag like electric tape to prevent slippage instead? I can't find info on whether backing it with mono is a detriment when using soft plastics and if you should just go straight braid?
Dunno about Nev but I've fished with braid for years and have always used mono backing, tied onto the braid with either a double uni knot or more lately an Albright knot. I used to buy braid by the spool and then have to trial and error how much backing was needed to fill the spool. These days I just get my local tackle shop to do it lol
Hi nev love your videos mate you might have made my fishing life easier can you please tell me something every body tells me I have to use a loop knot using soft plastics but I noticed you used a uni so is it ok to just use a uni knot ? Cheers jeff
Personally I use a quick snap as I chop and change lures a lot and I would say if you get a small size (I use size 1 mustard snap) it doesn’t really affect the action but I used the uni knot for many years with much success
ahhh so, all the small things add up and eventually, you will catch less fish... 15:37 haha, I knew it , thats why i never catch fish. Great vid man.. seriously 👍
Thanx for the vid mate, very informative to a newbie in soft plastics. May I ask a silly question.. Cud you attach a clip as you wud use on a sinker or hard lure to give quick change rather than tying knots again ?? My hands ain't nimble as they used too be lol. Many thanks..
Great video, one question, wouldn't tying the SP on with a uni knot restrict its natural movement? Would a loop knot be a better option? (Not arguing with Nev's logic here, he would out-fish me 100 to 1 lol)
Two questions if I may? Your rel is very under-spooled as I see it, which will hamper casting distance. 1/8 inch from lip is what I have always adhered to. The other thing, which is more concerning is that you recommend a leader BS as more than the main braid??? Surely, if you get snagged, the braid will go before the leader?
Finally a tutorial that actually is a tutorial and not just a video of a dude fishing

I was thinking the exact opposite. Whatever happened to people learning on their own?

Whats the rod and reel brands you're using here?

Is this only suitable for river and lake fishing? Are soft plastics good for jetty fishing too?
Really informative, thanks bro. Well made video 🎉
great vid, im now comfortable on what to buy and how to use it!. well explained. might take me a while to master the knots tho🤔

Obviously cost of swivel is gone and a potential damage to rod tip if not careful! Just curious on other reasons 👍

Hi kindly advise for exact rod and reel used as i cant check the balance of combo physically. Thanks
Just started fishing age 64 lol. My question is this. How do u switch the bait given its tied right to the line? Do u have to cut the line each time?
Yes, you cut everytime.
@@zacheritson9066 Thank you.
@@davidpiscopo3774you can use swivel if you dont want to cut it everytime you want to change bait
IDK if it's right to do it but my husband adds clips between bait line and line. So he just removes / changes clips with baits.
No idea neither but if he's catching fish then it's good
great video Nev. I am a newbie, do these set ups not need a swivel? cheers
Nah that don’t mate because when doing a line to line knot it does the swivels job with the added bonus that it can go through the guides
@@samuelwallace294 cheers thanks
Thanks! No swivel needed on this one.

Would a 6ft 2-4kg rod get the job done? Everyone I look people recommend 7ft
