Katheryn Janeway was the only captain that when she spoke, she had my attention. The actress’s commanding yet guiding voice really bring a lot from the character, especially when the chips are down and she shows her determination and - in extremes - fury.
Katherine Janeway is an exceptional scientist and probably one of the brightest minds in the Federation. As a command officer, however, she began as well-below average and it is only due to her father that she was given command of a starship. Don't get me wrong, she is an exceptionally capable and driven woman who would undoubted have ended up as the captain of a science vessel and, ultimately, as the Director of the Daystrom Institute. Her experiences in the Delta quadrant allowed her to grow as a command officer, eventually becoming an above-average captain... but not by much. It is only due to the quality of her crew that they survived to get home (and that includes two temporal mulligans--one by Harry and Chakotay, and the other by Janeway herself). I really like Star Trek Voyager, and I like the fact that Captain Janeway was not nearly such a polished leader as Kirk or Picard. It made the show a lot more interesting as we watched ALL of the characters grow and develop. The only thing I would have changed in Voyager is that Kes would have never existed. I absolutely DETEST the character of Kes (and for that matter, Jennifer Lien is a friggin fruitcake IRL). Kes contrasted sharply with Neelix' character and he really doesn't start to develop until she leaves in season 4. P.S. I like the "Redacted" entry on the Omega Directive... that was a nice touch!
ABQSentinel, I agree with everything, u said! I love all the Star Trek series, but Voyager is my favorite by far. And yeah, I really really didnt like Kes, she was so annoying.
Yeah, Kes is pretty much a Mary Sue. No personality other than the “cute, nice girl”. Yet she somehow has the most overpowered psychic abilities short of a Q.
With the character KES you at least know that the writers from Voyager are heavy into D&D she is the perfect sorcerer, but maybe misguided putting it in the Star Trek universe 😜
I love what you did, redacting the Omega Directive! Caught me off guard, made me do some serious thinking about the episode - and I remembered. Thank you for doing this. Too often we simply sit back and enjoy however when you challenge us to think, to become involved, Star Trek reemerges as the living document that it is.
Honestly, I thought for a second something was happening to my computer, LOL. I loved it too, but, just think of the possibilities if something like that were to happen today. It could stop all cars and gasp....computers!
Recently started rewatching voyager and while most of the characters are great, Janeway is a highlight, I always thought that the doctor had the best ark, going for basically a sentient tool to a living hologram with interest, free time and close friendships formed over time. Plus seeing the doctor in those new situation and watching him learn and grow from it was fantastic I suppose I could relate to that because I was a child when I first saw star trek 😊
You also forgot an important aspect of her: She's warrior and a fighter, methodical in preparation and powerful in combat. She is also diplomatic, but if you come her with a threatening attitude and locked and loaded weapons, prepare yourself to get your ass wooped and punched your nose bloody. She doesn't fear her enemies, but they should fear her and their endless will to protect the ones under her command. She does all there is to do to and also go the last mile: Step into a deadly force field with a crew member which seems to be death, fighting with a ship that got ripped apart and where you have a big whole just held together by a shield and still ramming the enemy ship, Buckle up with a handful of granades and a phaser rifle to clear the ship from a macro viruses.... she does whatever needs to be done in combat. Like said in one episode: "What can we do if the kept us hostage inside a dream?" and she responded: "We turn that dream, into a nightmare!" Like i wrote above, that is an important aspect of her and also should be mentioned. Edit: Oh okay, it's mentioned at 12:12 but it should be pointed out more in my opinion. Cause it's a very often recurring part of her personality, based on the aggressive beings she faced
I love the analysis of her personality in the last part of the video. You have actually helped me understand why I clicked so much with Janeway, and with that helped me understand myself better. Keep up the good work!
6:33 right as the Borg image popped up, my upstairs neighbor dropped something super heavy and I nearly had a heart attack at the noise. The Borg are attacking!! 😂
When it comes to Big assault weapons in Star Trek it's always Captain Janeway I picture carrying them. She's a very strong leader by example and she is very quick to lead the charge on the defense of her own ship from the inside.
Janeway was a average captain in my opinion but dear god no one get between this women and her crew. She will brake your face. I'd also classified her as a Marvrick.
Janeway did what needed to be done to survive. I dont think Picard would have. His morals would get enterprise destroyed in the delta quadrant. Archer could get through if in command of Voyager no problem.
To be fair; an _Average_ Federation Captain has pretty damn good qualities, each with their own individual species or personality traits that they use to adapt to each situation. *All* the Federation Captains are good captains, but her challenge was definitely one of the greatest, though. A more brazen or individual Captain would have died, imo, she was level headed and reserved and that's what saved her, in the end. Didn't pick sides (apart from with the Borg which was alliance or _become_ Borg or die and that's no choice at all) didn't trade tech as much as she possibly could, protected her crew first.
@@TurboNerdNews He spent years meditating on his hatred for humanity, which was what his parents had hoped would happen when they sent him to Starfleet in the first place but it kind of had the opposite effect. He overcame his emotions and returned to teach at Starfleet Academy for many years before returning to his duties as an officer.
Janeway is a great captain I would have been honored to be on the voyager with her. And always trying to be as responsible as much as possible and treating her crew as family that's the best way a captain should be.
One thing I love about Janeway, is that she makes the effort of knowing everyone on her ship. Picard may have known the officers, but he kept himself distant from even them.... With Janeway, she knows even the random crewmen that could easily have been lost in the shuffle, and knows them well enough to talk about what's going on in their lives (aside from... you know, "Still stuck in the Delta quadrant ma'am.") Granted, she's on a ship with less than 200, not over 1000, and circumstances did kindof force the crew into being more of an extended family unit, but she still made the effort.
Dude your analysis is amazing. Id humbly add that she is on the cusp of Taurus and Gemini, have traits of both signs. Outside of that, such a great and detailed analysis. Id dare say that anyone who would want to write a story of Janeway need not see voyager if you see this vid. Again, dude you nailed it. Total respect.
Best episode: year of hell. Nothing says innovative like working with a ship thats slowly getting beaten down. Then captain Janeway sacrifices her ship and self on a wim that her plan may work. Impressive.
I strongly recommend reading/listening to her autobiography, published 2020 and narrated by Kate Mulgrew in audiobook form. It is absolutely fantastic and I believe it is basically considered canon by the show's producers (judging from the copyright written on the cover). A few things the book states that differ to this video: - Tighe is never mentioned in the book, and the only person she remotely wanted to settle down with was Mark, who proposes to her on several occasions without their relationship despite her declining. She finally accepted over video call just before Voyager left. She mentions that she had flings throughout her various postings before Voyager, but she maintains that there was never any intentions of these going further. Early on, she did have a semi-serious relationship with a guy but she dumped him as he wanted to put his career ahead of hers and for her to essentially give everything up while he sought out a command role. - Janeway was nowhere near her father when he died. In fact, almost everything he did was classified. He was working on a new type of ship at the shipyards designed for combat with the Cardassians. The ship could traverse different environments, from space to a planet's atmosphere to under water. They successfully trialled it several times on an icey planet, and he asked to see it for himself. That time, it failed and he died. Janeway was informed by Captain Paris and had no idea it had happened before then and was completely shocked to learn where he was at the time. She was granted leave and essentially became depressed for a short period of time. - She didn't give up tennis for 19 years. She did lose a match as a teen, however, and took it extremely badly, but went on to win the following year. - She's not the Borg advisor, Seven is. - She didn't discover coffee at the academy, her paternal grandfather introduced it to her when she was intensely studying at his house for her Starfleet entry exams. Obviously this book was written after you made this video and you relied on the sources you had at the time.
Hello Rick I've been a long fan and this is my first comment love your Channel glad to see you're having more subscribers don't stop what you're doing also thank you
I also like the variety in Janeway his character. She could be a tough disciplinarian when she found it necessary, but she could also be extremely caring, tender, and supportive. I think she covers this range of personality traits better than any other Starfleet captain. The other one who has a good wide range of personality displays on the screen is Cisco, although sometimes when he gets angry and a passion about an issue it's a little bit too forced. Picard is a great great captain and a great man but you don't see his sensitive side as much as with the others and when you do he seems to perceive it as a weakness, like with that woman, I forget her name, that he was involved with and even played that flute thing for her which he never did with anyone else but then when she was nearly killed down on that planet, he was a wreck. As I said clearly he saw that as a weakness. for Janeway however, her sensitivity was not a weakness, but rather a strength that bolstered her personality.
Without being stranded in the Delta quadrant. I don't think Janeway would have become Admiral, twice. We had a marvelous discussion of this at a science fiction convention. Some people arguing from a US Navy perspective. and some people arguing from what they believed Starfleet to be about.
She’s maybe my second favorite Captain. Behind only perhaps Picard. The unique circumstances of the Voyager however give her an amazing opportunity to examine what Star Fleet stands for and why. I found her breathtaking and vulnerable and strong and complex. Amazing character. And one of the best “strong female characters” in the history of science fiction.
Voyager. My gateway drug into Star Trek, the first Captain I ever saw in the big chair, and so also the first one where I saw the entire show back to back during it's original run. Certainly one to forge new paths, and she managed very well indeed, given the lack of a support network Voyager was faced with.
My favorite captain, it’s not a very popular opinion but it is what it is, she was a tough, principled if not occasionally too principled, compassionate captain who when taken into account what happened to her ship and crew handled things admirably. I also founder quite relatable
Happy birthday today kate mulgrew. She's my favorite star fleet captain ever. She's given the name captain to all female's who love to wanna command there very own star class ship. She's an inspiration to me and the years of watching star trek Voyager. Intrepid class registry number 74656.😘😘😘
Also, Janeway was a scientist and proud of it, not relying on 'just cause' for the answer. But this could also work against her sometimes shutting out possibilities because they didn't fit her definition of what is and what is not.
Thanks for the video, a good summary of Janeway's life and what makes her tick. I always thought she was the most underrated of the Star Trek captains and certainly is a gutsy survivor has found strength from principals and her crew. The fact she is flawed and plays loose with the Prime Directive when push comes to shove makes her an interesting character. Mulgrew clearly rose to the challenge of doing this the role, she was always interesting to watch even doing mundane things like drink coffee.
Sir; Captain Janeway remains to me to be an extraordinary person in a unique situation. I can only imagine what it was like in a similar situation on HMS Botany Bay. Collecting data, samples, information for the first time. Not knowing whether its important or useless. Every decision one makes effects oneself and the people under your command. Life and death are the reality you deal with on a daily basis. There are days you would prefer to be alone in dark room where no one can see or hear you. That is her fait as a Captain of Voyager in Starfleet...
A nice profile Rick on my favorite Captain, Katherine Janeway. I would say the 2 part episode "Year of Hell" as well as "Scientific Method" are good examples of this Captain's range...
I wonder what will happen when the Federation encounters a civilization that has long since developed the Omega Molecule and uses them in almost everything and are a warp capable species.
@King Peppy Bringing back ghosts of people they've killed in the past over this, berating them constantly!! Ah man, I'd watch a whole movie about that lol cheapest billion dollars ever made in box office history!
I know Janeway gets a lot of crap for how she handled herself but I think she handled the situation much like anyone would have. She was in an unknown area of space and she had also lost key members of her crew. She wasn't about to lose anyone else even if it meant violating rules.
I like to imagine Janeway sent back to the early 21st century, where she's trapped as an inmate in a women's prison. To survive, she pulls on skills learned from Neelix to gain control of the commissary, while her knowledge of hostile alien cultures helps her navigate the dangerous prison social structure. Janeway's own motherly qualities even help some of the other inmates. You could make a whole series about Janeway in prison - seven seasons worth!
Sacred Ground is a good ep for Janeway's character but it is a bit of a tough watch for lack of action. I'd go with Series 5 opener 'Night' personally, the general premise of the episode is great, a void in space with no stars or stellar phenomena, but it's that lack of something for the crew to do besides travel on through leaves the Captain to allow her internalised guilt of stranding them in the Delta Quadrant to become external, shutting herself off from the rest of the crew, and that guilt would come to play into her decision later in the episode. Perhaps Voyager's strongest opening episode for a series?
DEFINITELY my favorite Star Trek Captain. Say what you want about her personality flaws. Captain Janeway played for keeps against space thugs that played for keeps...and beat them. That CANNOT be overlooked.
This is my favorite! Captain Janeway is a force, yet they got lost in the Delta quadrant. Still, she is my all time favorite but their ship is smaller than the Enterprise.
you know what I want to know? If the Equinox had been in the Delta quadrant prior to Voyager pulled in by the caretakers array and taking basically the same route home with obviously some differences especially in the areas of jumping hundreds or thousands of light years, why is it that none of the species they met along the way had heard of Starfleet or the Federation? I know that the Equinox did away with Federation values pretty much but with taking the same route they had to have encountered at least a few of the same species so it doesn't make sense that no one had ever heard of them.
I'm not much of a trekee, but I've recently been watching through the voyager series', and I gotta say, she's a little all over the place when it comes to the needs of the many outweighing the needs of the few, or just brashly putting her crew in serious danger just to shave a little bit of time off their trip home. There have been multiple cases where she's risked her crew for the sake of one or two individuals, and though this is a common trope in media, where she differs is in risking her crew for simple organisms that likely wouldn't appreciate it anyway.
Someone else has probably said so, but Picard did immeasurably more light years than anyone including Janeway when the Traveller blew the Enterprise beyond.. well, everything.
I love the Janeway character, or how it is supposed to be. But unfortunately, it was Voyager that had Janeway, and not one of the previous series. Not that I would like to replace Picard or Sisko, but Voyager is just... well, it's Voyager. Plot holes everywhere, characters that don't make sense etc. because the writing staff was literally fighting internally for the whole series. Now one has to pick where Janeway is depicted properly and where she is just acting silly because of writer's laziness. That's really frustrating, so this personnel file is really helpful in drawing a coherent picture of her character. Good job!
Nice touch with the Omega Directive there.

The Omega Particle is also the closest thing the Borg Collective comes to admiration of something.
Yeah it’s almost like a religion to them.
Janeway is by far my favourite Captain. Voyager was just fantastic. I wish it was able to go on a season longer.
Kes is my waifu.
To be fair, neelix's character contrasts sharply with *any* sane individual.
The *Omega Directive* segment of this was... _perfect._
Life story of a great captain
Like said in one episode: "What can we do if the kept us hostage inside a dream?" and she responded: "We turn that dream, into a nightmare!"
Like i wrote above, that is an important aspect of her and also should be mentioned.
"Janeway.. "
You know ur a beast when your name strikes fear in the Borg queen.
My favorite captain
6:33 right as the Borg image popped up, my upstairs neighbor dropped something super heavy and I nearly had a heart attack at the noise. The Borg are attacking!! 😂
When it comes to Big assault weapons in Star Trek it's always Captain Janeway I picture carrying them. She's a very strong leader by example and she is very quick to lead the charge on the defense of her own ship from the inside.
My favorite Captain :) Year of Hell i think tells you everything you need to know about her.
Janeway was a average captain in my opinion but dear god no one get between this women and her crew. She will brake your face. I'd also classified her as a Marvrick.
Kathryn Janeway was the finest Capt in the federation. Stranded forty light years away, she brings her ship and her crew home.
alaster boneman well coffee always comes first for her though lol
Jack Betz you mean 70,000 light years
Janeway did what needed to be done to survive.
I love how you covered [REDACTED].
Please do Tuvok. He was on the Excelsior under Sulu and was still an Ensign decades later under Janeway?
He served twice two seperate careers, dont know what he did in between tho
@@TurboNerdNews He was an instructor at starfleet for some of that time.
He was away from Starfleet for about 50 years, hence the lack of promotion.
Hes a Lt not a ensign
@@TurboNerdNews He spent years meditating on his hatred for humanity, which was what his parents had hoped would happen when they sent him to Starfleet in the first place but it kind of had the opposite effect. He overcame his emotions and returned to teach at Starfleet Academy for many years before returning to his duties as an officer.
Janeway is a great captain I would have been honored to be on the voyager with her. And always trying to be as responsible as much as possible and treating her crew as family that's the best way a captain should be.
Who doesn't love captain insaneway :3
I would love to see a personnel file for Dax the symbiot!
Somedude 17 Yes, absolutely
It'd be interesting to know The experiences of all of Dax's hosts
Karl Smith LOL that would take an hour
@@michaelesposito2629 I'm game if you are?!?
One thing I love about Janeway, is that she makes the effort of knowing everyone on her ship. Picard may have known the officers, but he kept himself distant from even them.... With Janeway, she knows even the random crewmen that could easily have been lost in the shuffle, and knows them well enough to talk about what's going on in their lives (aside from... you know, "Still stuck in the Delta quadrant ma'am.")
Granted, she's on a ship with less than 200, not over 1000, and circumstances did kindof force the crew into being more of an extended family unit, but she still made the effort.
A few things the book states that differ to this video:
- Tighe is never mentioned in the book, and the only person she remotely wanted to settle down with was Mark, who proposes to her on several occasions without their relationship despite her declining.
Hello Rick I've been a long fan and this is my first comment love your Channel glad to see you're having more subscribers don't stop what you're doing also thank you
Thanks!
The best captain ever. Extremely underrated.
As I said clearly he saw that as a weakness. for Janeway however, her sensitivity was not a weakness, but rather a strength that bolstered her personality.
sorry about the dictation typos.
7:06 Brilliant :)
Also, nice to see positive, well-researched Voyager content on YT. Thank you. Please continue.
Future subjects for the personal files, captain archer, Dax, Kirk, Tom Paris.
Darien Evans let's not forget Worf, Commander Riker, Dr Crusher, Geordi Laforge, Tasha Yar, Dr McCoy, Montgomery Scott, Chekov, Sulu, Spock, Uhura, Counselor Troi,
LOVE the omega directive bit. The detail did not go unoticed ;) gj
My absolute favourite Federation Captain. I love Admiral Janeway, I wish they would do a movie on Voyager
Voyager. My gateway drug into Star Trek, the first Captain I ever saw in the big chair, and so also the first one where I saw the entire show back to back during it's original run. Certainly one to forge new paths, and she managed very well indeed, given the lack of a support network Voyager was faced with.
Thanks Rick - another great profile.
Now for the ST Prodigy update!
The Omega.... *interference*
Love it, well done.
I adore Janeway. Thank you for this! :)
The doctor: you and lt paris turned into super evolved humans and had children
Janeway: lets ditch them on a planet and forget about it
Also, Janeway was a scientist and proud of it, not relying on 'just cause' for the answer. But this could also work against her sometimes shutting out possibilities because they didn't fit her definition of what is and what is not.
I see what you did there, protect the directives
Thanks for the video, a good summary of Janeway's life and what makes her tick. I always thought she was the most underrated of the Star Trek captains and certainly is a gutsy survivor has found strength from principals and her crew. The fact she is flawed and plays loose with the Prime Directive when push comes to shove makes her an interesting character. Mulgrew clearly rose to the challenge of doing this the role, she was always interesting to watch even doing mundane things like drink coffee.
i would love it if you update this now that the book (the autobiography of Kathryn Janeway) came out
Sir; Captain Janeway remains to me to be an extraordinary person in a unique situation.
Excellent information. Loved the video.
A nice profile Rick on my favorite Captain, Katherine Janeway. I would say the 2 part episode "Year of Hell" as well as "Scientific Method" are good examples of this Captain's range...
Janeway's father was played by Len Cariou aka Henry Reagan on Blue Bloods.
What a well presented video! It was a treat to watch. Thank you!
I wonder what will happen when the Federation encounters a civilization that has long since developed the Omega Molecule and uses them in almost everything and are a warp capable species.
...Depending on the civilization's behavior to other civilizations, i could see ALL sorts of things occuring.
@King Peppy Bringing back ghosts of people they've killed in the past over this, berating them constantly!!
Ah man, I'd watch a whole movie about that lol cheapest billion dollars ever made in box office history!
Janeway is awesome. I hope she pops up in Picard. And your video was so comprehensive & enjoyable, thanks 🙏🏻
I know Janeway gets a lot of crap for how she handled herself but I think she handled the situation much like anyone would have. She was in an unknown area of space and she had also lost key members of her crew. She wasn't about to lose anyone else even if it meant violating rules.
Equinox and Endgame are the best to understand her.
My favorite Federation Iron Lady.
One of Katherine Hepburn's best roles!
Fun Fact: Janeway's doctoral thesis was "Compact Halo Objects," though the book doesn't go into detail as to what that entails.
Very nice touch with that level 10 clearance item which won't be named.
DEFINITELY my favorite Star Trek Captain.
Say what you want about her personality flaws. Captain Janeway played for keeps against space thugs that played for keeps...and beat them. That CANNOT be overlooked.
SHE was a space thug
Joshua Perrine? Seriously?
This is my favorite! Captain Janeway is a force, yet they got lost in the Delta quadrant. Still, she is my all time favorite but their ship is smaller than the Enterprise.
Thank you for the briefing
That is not where the record ends officially. She was promoted to Admiral.
you know what I want to know?
Loved the omega redact!!!
Good job!
I would love it if she would just "show up" on Picard. Seven is coming, so we are due for an appearance of Janeway.
I think the show could have seen at least 3 more seasons
I believe we can all agree that Janeway is probably the Starfleet Captain that's been into the deepest captain in the Star Trek multiverse
YOU REDACTED THE OMEGA DIRECTIVE!!!! Subscribed!
Thank you
Good video! In my humble opinion, Kirk and Janeway were the best captains.
Captain Janeway is my favorite character on Voyager since 2000 to 2022.
Janeway is an awesome Captain, my fourth favorite. ^_^
Please do one of these for someone Like Dylan Hunt form Andromeda
Very informative and I didn't know most of this
awesome job as always :)
Did you forget about the tennis matches between her and 7 of 9
How about during a profile of Capt. Jonathan Archer?
