He ended up showing immense courage, though. Diplomat is a great name for him. I also like philosopher. Sisko, in one word: Soldier
@WhydoIsuddenlyhaveahandle I swear, "Starfleet is *_NOT_* a military organization." is drilled in me head like so much propaganda. It's ridiculous. You are literally organized like a military, a navy specifically. Chain of command, Ranks, not to mention weapons of mass destruction at the disposal of every captain in the fleet. They don't even gotta check with someone before destroying a planets ecosystem. It's a military and a super dangerous one at that. That being said, I'm glad humanity, at least for the most part, seems capable of handling it. Picard being the utmost example of such a person. But I think the Dominion war reminded us that we still have "That" instinct. And Sisko is the pinnacle of, "When the job needs getting done, send this guy." I truly think of him like that. Simply because idk if any of the other captains, except maybe Kirk, can reach down into the level of ruthlessness required to win an all out war. But that's why I love him.
Ben Sisko was a consummate jack of trades: master of diplomacy, able to unite warring factions, dispense justice, and overcome obstacles with non-conventional tactics. He knew when to be direct,(the Sisko bark) and when to use humor to diffuse tense circumstances, (the only Captain to be seen laughing, other than Kirk and Janeway), and when to GO THERE(punching Q and getting the Romulans into the war against the Dominion). He was a well-rounded and multi-dimensional character thanks to some great writing and a well defined character arc.
Benjamin Sisko was the most human of all the Star Trek captains we saw on-screen. A single father who was given the task of commanding a space station located near a mysterious and dangerous wormhole while making sure that the thousands of human and alien species aboard said space station didn't kill each other or start another war.
he is my favorite of the captains and funny the Defiant is my favorite federation ship (probaly because it looks the least like a fed ship) personally ied love for him to make a return to star trek as it really bugs me that they refuse to make a new show set in the most interesting time in the star trek setting. think of it the last time we saw federation space was at the end of DS9, we didnt see anything important in voyager apart from a new ship or two and one battle but a new show for star trek set after voyager would have the events after the dominion war and the fall of cardasia and all that new tech and knowledge that voyager returned home with, that's one hell of a setting to build on. on a side note i play STO and i love that his baseball is still on HIS desk at DS9.
Oh wow. That is hands down a fantastic video! Reciting the Memory Alpha content is one thing, drawing an exhaustive yet still concise character profile another altogether... I watched DS9 several times and Sisko is certainly one of my favorite characters from all of Trek (nope, not all series leads are), yet you made me realize things about his character that I never thought of before. Especially, I often viewed his witch hunt of Eddington as kinda a one-off episode, one that doesn't fit into his character. "He would never really have gone THAT far, would he?" I was thinking. Your synopsis puts that in a good context with the rest of his character. His actions were certainly extreme, but I kinda think I understand him better now... and understand that and why he went that far. Certainly gained a sub and I'm looking forward to more of those videos! You seem to be quite good in judging a character.
One last thing: Since Sisko went to the Fire Caves on personal business rather than a Starfleet mission, he's probably listed as AWOL rather than as MIA. Unless maybe Starfleet fudged his listing to avoid disgracing the legacy of a heroic officer, which is quite possible.
Stopping the Pah Wraiths was personal business? Sisco's assignment was to protect Bajor and usher them into the Federation. It's not like he could have accomplished either of those things with the Pah Wraiths in charge...
My favorite captain. More rugged than Picard, more flawed also. But also somehow more human and, Avery Brooks is at his best here, acting the SHIZZ out of the role.
"In The Pale Moonlight" is my favorite DS9 episode. Especially the ending when he was looking for the excuse to except for what he had done for the greater good while recording his captain's log. Then deleted it because of the guilt he was feeling. He barely showed any emotion in that scene, and he didn't have to. You could feel the weight on that decision, and it made you ask yourself, would've you done the same thing?
In the Pale Moonlight was one of my favorites because it showed that Sisko was a man that could be corrupted so to speak. I think Sisko was a great counterpart to Picard. Picard, for the most part, was a kind of "By the letter of" and Sisko was more "In the spirit of" kind of leader. By the end of the episode Sisko is shown to be capable of committing evil in the name of the greater good once he's fallen low enough like seeing names of people he knows killed in the war week after week. I think one of the many reasons Sisko became my favorite captain is because they show that despite him being an exceptional leader he is also a flawed human being and capable of being driven by negative emotions.
I love every captain (yes including Archer and Pine) for different reasons. Sisko was such a presence. He brought gravity to the captains chair. While Picard was a diplomat at heart, Sisko is a war hero
Glad you mentioned Archer. One thing I like about him is he is a great middle ground between us now and Kirk's time. He has some of our rash traits, but also comes off as wanting something more evolved. He comes off as almost cute, trying to be an explorer. But, when it came down to it, he was willing to grow a sentient life form to murder it for body parts, become a pirate to steal a war coil, and murder Xindi at an unarmed station to save Earth, similar to us. That was such a tough character balance to act out. Even though Enterprise got canceled, I thought Archer was an excellent addition to the story.
Also loved the episode "Visitor" one of the few Star Trek episodesthat bring me to tears everytime I watch it. Shows the awesome dynamic and love of a true father son relationship and bond. The bond that Sisko and Jake share not only breaks racial stereotypes but general ones as well. My 2nd favorite series in Trek but Capt. Benjamin Sisko is my favorite Commander.
Sisco is probably the man and Starfleet Captain I might refer to as myself. As a person, a Chef, a family man and as you said a builder. If he was a real character he would have my utmost respect. We all have our failures, we all have our triumphs. This Captain of Starfleet shows us the true embodiment of what it is to be human. Might I suggest a breakdown of the Great lives of Dax.
If that Picard series wants me to watch it, Sisko will have to have an episode. It'd be great to see those two on screen together again with such a wildly different situation.
I really wish there had been a couple of Picard cameos sprinkled throughout DS9. While everyone else is admiring and praising Picard, you would see Sisko in the background staring a hateful hole through Picard because he blames him for his wife's death. The one meeting between Sisko and Picard in DS9's pilot would have been a great introduction to their lopsided relationship.
Great video. One thing that stood out to me is the amount of loss and betrayal by former friends/colleagues that Sisko endured. No doubt it contributed to his arguably hypocritical nature. Excellent (and my favorite) character.
Loved it! I watch DS9 so much and didn't know all of this. One thing I would add is the importance of the episode Rapture. He REALLY embraced his role as Emissary in this episode. Essentially he defied his orders when he was assigned to DS9 (help Bajor get into the Federation). That is huge!
I would love to see a Seven of Nine personnel file as the more I think about it the more I think she is my favourite character in all of Star Trek. Also as you've already covered Picard and Sisko it may be interesting to do a episode on seven as she has a much different relationship to the Borg compared to the other two and you could sepculate on how each of them deals with their tarma. Picard I believe to be remorse, Sisko anger and seven...it's a little harder to say.. Recovery? Momentum.
I think when DS9 began Ben Sisko was the son raised by Joseph and Sarah Sisko but when Past Tense happened, he changed something inherent to Josephs character so the prophets restored the timeline as best they could because Joseph and Sarah were psychologically incompatible in the new timeline where Sarah died and Joseph survived to the present day. 'Ascension' was a hint from them.
I sometimes wonder if they say other notable characters were posted with others just because or where they planning crossovers of somekind that never happened.
I'd also recommend "Our Man Bashir" for absolute, maximum Brooks-quality ham. Due seriousness, Sisko is my favorite captain simply because of how complex his character is and how he embodies something I think would be needed for every Starfleet Captain: Strength of Will.
The most human captain of them all. The fact that he cooks csirke paprikás is just the cherry on the cake. (Hungarian here lol ) I just love him , all the way , he is my favourite
Sisko left reality as we know it to perform tasks with the prophets because he is one. When he told Cassidy that he was coming back and she said, when? He replied yesterday, today, or tomorrow. In my opinion, I think this is why all the other Star Treks after Voyager are on different timelines. Sisko is coming back!
So after almost 25 years it finally hit me that Jake is actually 1/4 prophet too. Lol. To anyone's knowledge has this fact ever been explored outside the television series? Seems like there would be some interesting stories to tell.
for all we know, maybe the fact that he's half profit and Jake is 1/4 could have something to do with why they were attached to each other almost like a rubber band during the Visitor. if they were just ordinary humans, I couldn't think of any reasonable explanation to justify that.
Captain Sisko had all the qualities of a great commander and yet was the most complex of the captains of Star Trek. Avery Brookes brought this character to life in a way few others could.
@Yuki BabaYaga The new Star Trek shows are absolutely horrible. Not only are they pushing the same very tired agenda currently going on in Hollywood right now, but for some reason they're stuffed with filthy language (like they're trying to be like that idiot Seth McFarlane's lame ass show), stupid characters, and ignore all previous established continuity. I don't want the great Captain Sisko anywhere near that garbage, unless it's to clean it all up and get rid of it.
two of my favorite episodes where he is concerned are DAX and Explorers. explores was a cool one for seeing him in a less formal role pursuing an interest and proving a questioned element of Bajoran history. DAX is a really good example of him pursuing the truth adamantly and the extraordinary lengths that he will go to to protect not only the innocent but a close friend, but also shows how much he agonizes over considering the possibility that his close friend may actually be guilty.
Benjamin Sisko was the personification of "My boot, Your ass!" The Defiant embodied "I'm gonna kick your punk ass and your gonna thank me for it"! I miss these two bad ass!
You should do a show on what happens to Sisko after he returns from the celestial temple I’m pretty sure it’s covered in some Star Trek books and or on memory Alpha
During the Dominion War I would like to have seen a moment where the Enterprise comes to help and fight and Sisko and Picard have a conversation where Sisko forgives Picard for the Borg attack
I've seen an argument that a lot of Lily's role in _First Contact_ could have been filled by Sisko with minimal changes needed, but it was never gonna happen; Rick Berman despised DS9
I don't understand why Star Fleet would give such a post as DS9, which was tasked to aid the Bajorans in rebuilding after the war and preparing to join the federation, to someone with no diplomatic experience, no political experience, no large scale operations experience, and no civil engineering experience. It seems he was skilled in ship design and small vessel command and none of that is sufficient preparation for this post. And this post was so important. Not only did he have to do what was already stated, but he had to keep the peace in an area of space that could easily erupt right back into war. Surely there were better people to command the station.
and that is the point. at the time the federation was strong arrogant and full of themselves, thinking that they could ( except for the borg) handle anything. for them this was a throwaway mission using castoffs and oddities, if it failed so be it and they would of sent in those that could handle the job. little did they know that they did but not in the way they envisioned...
Love this video, but the one thing you have forgotten about is the books that come after the tv show. If I’m correct in one of the books Sisko does indeed come back months or a year later. The name of the book escapes me at the moment though.
I know this was put on 5 year ago but I can still comment on this like myself and many would love to see Avery brooks do a Patrick Stewart and see a star Trek sisko like the DS9 comic he came out of the worm hole love to see a older Avery brooks reprise the role
Holy hannah, do I HATE the ending of DS9. To me, it did such a great disservice to Ben Sisko, because I don't believe for a second that this was what he really wanted.
It absolutely wasn't what he wanted. But it's what the Prophets and the story demanded. He wanted to retire to Bajor. The Prophets stated he will find no rest there. He wanted to be there for his child`s birth and wife's side. The Prophets said no, I think because he defied then by marrying her. The ending with Dukat was rushed for sure but absolutely perfect for this man who fought against the faith and destiny for the entirety of the show to be ultimately bound to it.
Great presentation. I think Sisko is the most 'human' starfleet captain. Kirk is 'perfect', Picard never had any women (?) or family... Sisko was written to show a more well rounded man in that captain's chair. Love the episodes with his Pops, son and Kasidy Yates. The Dominion War was an awesome series... wish the Defiant was bigger...
My favorite is when he is recording his log after the death of the Romulan dude that he helped bring about with Garak. One of the best in the series IMHO.
He does kinda return in the Star Trek Online expansion Victory is life aka DS9 season 8. Though just for a short moment and it is unclear if this story will be continued. I recommend the game for this expansion alone anyway. Being back on DS9 and interacting with almost all of the characters felt great and the story was dramatic and hillarious at the same time. DS9 at its best.

think of it the last time we saw federation space was at the end of DS9, we didnt see anything important in voyager apart from a new ship or two and one battle but a new show for star trek set after voyager would have the events after the dominion war and the fall of cardasia and all that new tech and knowledge that voyager returned home with, that's one hell of a setting to build on.
on a side note i play STO and i love that his baseball is still on HIS desk at DS9.
Puncher of Qs. Best description of Benjamin Sisko ever.
I recently discovered this channel and I’m already a huge fan.
Unless maybe Starfleet fudged his listing to avoid disgracing the legacy of a heroic officer, which is quite possible.
aperson22222 what does AWOL mean
@@thedank0r162 Away WithOut Leave. AWOL
Stopping the Pah Wraiths was personal business? Sisco's assignment was to protect Bajor and usher them into the Federation. It's not like he could have accomplished either of those things with the Pah Wraiths in charge...
@@theonlymatthew.l it's not like the federation sent him down to investigate the fire caves, oh wait they didn't he just up and left....
A W O L = Absent With Out Leave
My favorite captain. More rugged than Picard, more flawed also. But also somehow more human and, Avery Brooks is at his best here, acting the SHIZZ out of the role.
I would like to see a personnel file on Nog , the first Ferengi in Starfleet.
There is one by now, check it out
"In The Pale Moonlight" is my favorite DS9 episode.
This was a really interesting video. Thank you.
In the Pale Moonlight is possibly the greatest episode of Star Trek ever made, up there with All Good Things.
Do Elim Garak Video Next.
Garak YES!!
Why he's just a "plain simple tailor."
William Costigan "It's best not to dwell on such minutiae."
-- Elim Garak, In the Pale Moonlight
FFcecil1991 I've been left with the distinct impression that if I attempt to downvote this comment... It might explode.
William Costigan I hope that's just an impression. xD
This was impressive recount. You pulled out ideas that I overlooked or not counted into Sisko history.
My favorite captain and imo In The Pale Moonlight is DS9's best episode.
Sisko is my favorite character, next to Spock. Thanks for review.
Nice summary and insightful analysis and commentary.Thank you.
Most badass man to wear the uniform since Kirk.
Really hope they bring him back at somepoint in Picard. The way it ends with Sisko is too "quantum leap."
Hell no. Just no.
Hell Yes. Just Yes!!! Fuck it they brought back Picard!!!
Have you seen the doc the captain's he was barely coherent.
In the Pale Moonlight is probably the best episode of any Star Trek ever written. I’d love to see a profile of Odo 😉 Thanks!
Recovery? Momentum.
I'd love to see a personnel file on Worf!
I really like these, it makes it easier to understand them when you see the bigger picture, .
Looking forward to the next one!
In the pale Moonlight and The Visitor were two of my favorites.
The haircut. You forgot it. It is when he became the baddest man ever.
7 Vorta and 1 Changling voted this video down.
and 23 jem hadar
And eight Pah-Wraith.
and 10 breen
not to mention kai winn
This is really fantastic. Great analysis or his personality and motives
I sometimes wonder if they say other notable characters were posted with others just because or where they planning crossovers of somekind that never happened.
Really well done! Sisko is my favorite captain!
In the Pale Moonlight is my favourite episode of Star Trek.
@@amandamills4133 That really makes a lot of sense.

Do Dax not Jadiza or Ezri but the symbiot Dax
Justin Dorsey the Lives of Dax is an excellent collection of short stories...

@@geemonster9179 Yes, but what the OP (and now me) is asking for is a profile of the many "one and the same"'s that is Dax.

@@TheKickass85 yeah? Lol all of "Dax"
Captain Sisko had all the qualities of a great commander and yet was the most complex of the captains of Star Trek. Avery Brookes brought this character to life in a way few others could.
Loved this. Thank you
What if Avery Brooks somehow reprises his role as Sisko in the new Picard series?
@Yuki BabaYaga The new Star Trek shows are absolutely horrible. Not only are they pushing the same very tired agenda currently going on in Hollywood right now, but for some reason they're stuffed with filthy language (like they're trying to be like that idiot Seth McFarlane's lame ass show), stupid characters, and ignore all previous established continuity. I don't want the great Captain Sisko anywhere near that garbage, unless it's to clean it all up and get rid of it.
Q: You hit me; Picard never hit me.
Sisko: I’m not Picard!
I love Q's genuine surprise 😂
Very nicely done! Thank you!
I think Worf needs a Personel File. He is an interesting character to analyze, imo.
two of my favorite episodes where he is concerned are DAX and Explorers. explores was a cool one for seeing him in a less formal role pursuing an interest and proving a questioned element of Bajoran history. DAX is a really good example of him pursuing the truth adamantly and the extraordinary lengths that he will go to to protect not only the innocent but a close friend, but also shows how much he agonizes over considering the possibility that his close friend may actually be guilty.
He's a complicated man and no one understands him but the prophets.
Benjamin Sisko
'In The Pale Moonlight' is one of the best Star Trek episodes, hands down.
Kirk: the man of action
Picard: the philosopher
Janeway: the scientist
Sisko: the man you absolutely do not want to fuck with.
Benjamin Sisko was the personification of "My boot, Your ass!" The Defiant embodied "I'm gonna kick your punk ass and your gonna thank me for it"! I miss these two bad ass!
Editing note at 6:46, Stauts instead of Status.
Capt Kirk, Lt. Jadzia Dax, Ambassador Dax, Dax, Ambassador Worf, Lt. Paris, Lt. Tuvok, Lt. Solar.
Ds9 best trek i still watch it ever year
You should do a show on what happens to Sisko after he returns from the celestial temple I’m pretty sure it’s covered in some Star Trek books and or on memory Alpha
Star fleet red shirted sisko and he refused to die in ds9.
Love this video, but the one thing you have forgotten about is the books that come after the tv show. If I’m correct in one of the books Sisko does indeed come back months or a year later. The name of the book escapes me at the moment though.
You forgot his great ancestor in the 80's was Hawk from spenser for hire
I know this was put on 5 year ago but I can still comment on this like myself and many would love to see Avery brooks do a Patrick Stewart and see a star Trek sisko like the DS9 comic he came out of the worm hole love to see a older Avery brooks reprise the role
Agreed
@@SHBazTBone The Prophets are annoying pains in the ass!
Oh don't worry we shall see the Emissary return soon enough for Victory is Life. 😉
Great work!
"The Sisko; first name:
Don't fuck with."
My favorite is when he is recording his log after the death of the Romulan dude that he helped bring about with Garak. One of the best in the series IMHO.
Hope you do an Archer and Kirk (prime) one
My two favorite captains, Sisko and Kirk. They are incredible leaders, but Sisko was inspiring as a leader.
The the 24th century, Picard is the Diplomat, Janeway is the Explorer, Ben Sisco is the Warrior.
Have you done a personnel file on Garak?
The Sisko!
Suggestion: Garak. One of DS9's most interesting and complex characters.
the most interesting tailor in the galaxy
He does kinda return in the Star Trek Online expansion Victory is life aka DS9 season 8. Though just for a short moment and it is unclear if this story will be continued. I recommend the game for this expansion alone anyway. Being back on DS9 and interacting with almost all of the characters felt great and the story was dramatic and hillarious at the same time. DS9 at its best.
Sean Bean:
"One does not simply call him Benjamin..."
Only his father, the 3 Dax hosts (Curzon, Jadzia, and Ezri), and both his wives (Jennifer, and Kassidy) call him Benjamin.
Wonder if his character will be ever revisited to tell us when he comes back from the prophets
