You didn't talk about the time he was forced to live an entire lifespan as a member of a dead race, in the space of a few hours.
He lived as a family man until his death in this alternate life, and became a musician.
On his death in the alternate life, he woke in his real one, and cannot forget any of it. He is the last living repository of a dead spacefaring species' culture, and some of his hobbies, views, and reservations change as a result.

My father didn't usually watch Star Trek with me, but one Saturday he sat down and watched an episode of TNG with me. Dad retired as a full colonel at the end of 28.5 years of service. At the end of the episode he stated that Picard was one of the few fictional officers he'd seen that he would trust and serve with. He wasn't just talking sci-fi, either.

My theory of Picard's detachment from his crew is that he was so distraught by the loss of Jack Crusher, his 1st officer and best friend, that he consciously chose to maintain professional detachment from his crew moving forward. Which is why the only people he seems very close too on the Enterprise are Dr Crusher who is an old friend, and Guinan who saw past his cold exterior and went out of her way to become close to him. But 7 years into the mission he discovers that he does indeed consider the Enterprise crew to be his close friends and family and having seen a future where many of the crew aren't even on speaking terms he decides to change his ways. By symbolically joining the Officers poker game he is deciding to embrace the relationships instead of always maintaining his distance, and they happily welcome him to join the game.

It really parallels Patrick Stewart himself. He was a classically trained actor who spent his entire career on the stage and took his work extremely seriously. Most of the cast were Hollywood actors who were much more fun-loving and jokey than what Stewart was used to. The disconnect resulted in Stewart being detached and sometimes a pain to work with in the early years. There was an infamous incident where he yelled at fellow members "THIS IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE 'FUN'".
But he eventually came around and embraced his new job. He became "one of the boys" on even made a career for himself in Hollywood. Something even he thought he'd never do.

Picard deserves more of an action hero rep. The man trains for and leads a black ops mission behind enemy lines in middle aged, during which he’s captured, tortured for more than a week, breaks before being returned to the Federation, and goes back to commanding the Enterprise like nothing happened. James T Kirk eat your heart out.

I would recommend the dramatically underrated (though for understandable reasons) episode "The Perfect Mate" as an episode with insight into Picard. The way Kamala (I think that's her name) adapts to Picard makes it a great character study, if one can overlook the chauvinist undertones in the episode.

Jean Luc Picard, the very first BOLD man I have fell in love with. The best captain in Starfleet, we share the French touch and I got to meet the icon in a convention in 1991. Consequently, I had to marry a bold man that I had to convert into a Star Trek fan.

  • @mr.j7288

He is the best of all captains .... in all the Star Trek series .... but the man Patrick Stewart one of the greatest men to walk the face of the earth .... my tv dad growing up I learned so much watching him and if I’m so lucky in life to model the character he played which I strive for to be more like him ...the human race is so busy fighting amongst one another.... we would all be so lucky to have a leader like Jean luc picard perhaps we would have a more peaceful world to live in .... the idealism of Star Trek you can only hope one day the human race unites one day to work together.... instead of money and greed which seems to be the new moral standard for society .... one day I hope we can evolve to work together in a united effort
To better the human race.... instead of fighting amongst one another ...

How the hell can you put all that together? Well done, love your work.
You know the most interesting characters in any story are those with flaws and inabilities in their character. So how does Mr perfect Picard, become such a well loved possibly THE most loved character along with Spok and Kirk, in the franchise.
I think he needs a few flaws. He should be lonely as hell.

I wonder what Patrick Stewart (as a man, not an actor) would feel about this dissertation. How would he respond, what would his emotional and intellectual responses be? I think you [Certifiably] did a great job digging into the complete methos and cannon of our Capt. Good show.

So the character of Picard was 59 yrs old when he assumed command of the enterprise? I never knew a - at that time - 47 yr old Stewart played such an old dude. I always assumed, the characters and the actors age was the identical. Silly me.

3:40 Picard takes the Stargazer almost 100 years into the past to have an encounter with the Ferengi, losing the ship in the process. It's not clear how the crew got back to the present.
